except Quagmire barely owns up to the fact that he's awful... he shits on Brian for hitting on Lois when he's consistently done the same throughout the series, likely more times than Brian. Also, the dude is a sexual predator. You can't just casually spike women's drinks and hit on underage girls and then act like you're better than someone who is dishonest in relationships because hey, at least he owns up to it (which I actually haven't actually seen him do)

@@Mrpersonman0 They're not the same question. "Why don't you like me" would straightly ask the reason behind someone not liking you. It insinuates that the person asking just wants to know the specific reason why they're not liked by another person. "HOW could you not like me" also demands the specific reason for why a person isn't liked, however it addresses the manner of the person that's being asked, to question the other person's behavior and especially if their behavior is puzzling. Brian asked Quagmire how he could not like him, not just because he didn't understand his own flaws, but also because he genuinely didn't understand and did not like Quagmire personally disliking him. He addressed Quagmire as if his behavior was illogical or in the wrong because he did not like Brian. That's what we call a loaded question, and that was Brian's mistake in starting a serious talk.

It’s normally something people say tongue in cheek, or flirtatiously in a non serious way. If someone legitimately said “how can you not like me?” that to me is a huge mark of arrogance. 0:35 Sad thing about this scene looking back, Brian could've easily shown some empathy for Quagmire here. Layoffs and salary cuts are never fun for anyone, and in Quagmire's field of flying it could've been a good chance to open that conversation about flight disruption and maybe even create a small bond between them. Conversation, especially when trying to make friends should flow naturally and not rely on what YOU want to talk about.

Lauren Ahiable I think Quagmire’s point with the Louis thing is that Brian should be grateful to Peter, yet he continues to take from him and try to sleep with his wife. It’s more about the fact that he’s ungrateful and greedy rather than the sexual interest. Quagmire has shown interest in Louis and slept with Loretta, but he doesn’t really owe anything to Peter and Cleveland. Sure, that’s bad behavior, but he is aware of that and accepts it, plus Loretta did consent to sleeping with him so that’s on her too. He’s certainly a perverted character, but he knows that and isn’t trying to deceive himself. The rest of his points are pretty straightforward and valid. Quagmire is not a perfect character (obviously, it’s Family Guy lol), but he is far from the worst and I think this is a pretty impressive moment for him.

Who cares if it got old? Changing characters from a complete 180 only sets a precedence of laziness and inability. Who cares if people like Stewie or not? You're not going to like every character. The biggest problem with retconning characters, is when you're so used to it that some of the characters you DID like, you won't like any more because a hack of a writer can't keep consistency worth a damn and then throws in a Trump chicken fight for the lolz. Or their not so subtle approach to Republicans and/or Conservatism. I'm a liberal and I find their liberal agenda fascist. Liberalism means upholding "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" not the same quote minus those who don't fit your worldview. Quagmire is entirely right about the textbook liberal agenda and it fits Brian and Seth and Family Guy to a T. As he is entirely textbook generic about his liberal views. He's just not as self-aware anymore because he's a closeted conservative. Ever seen American Dad? That show is pro-conservative AF and its far more hilarious and entertaining.
Family Guy has had its moments over the years and once in a while, they'll make another one, but its becoming increasingly sporadic with Seth's poor writing habits. Seth himself has admitted his love and effort goes into American Dad.

This is both one of the best and worst scenes.
It is so cathartic to see Brian be knocked off of his high-horse, even for a little bit. It’s a fantastically beautiful rant about why Brian is so awful.
The bad is that this shows that Seth knows all the bad things about Brian, things that the people who watch his show criticize, but he hasn’t changed Brian’s character. It would have been so much better if this was something that kept getting brought up, or something similar to the way they handled Brian’s book, have it in the background but always have it present. They could have made Brian the likable character he was in the early seasons, but now he’s just a husk of his former self. Now, Brian is just an evil demon wearing the skin of someone who was once so nice.
Edit: I forgot about Seth not writing anymore, so just replace “Seth” with “The Writers”.

The "worst" part about Brian is what he says right before Quagmire erupts: "How can you not like me?" Not "why don't you", but "how can you not". Brian is so self-absorbed and so sure of his own likability that he cannot understand how someone could not like him. He has a thousand faults on top of the ones Quagmire listed, and if he gave a damn about anyone other than himself, he'd see "how" someone could view him as a rotten person. Instead, he's stuck in a fantasy world he's constructed in which he's such a great guy and so far above everyone else that for someone to not like him is simply inconceivable. "How can you not like me" is not a question anyone should ever ask.

This is so ridiculous. Quagmire is most of these things but worse. He not only hits on his best friend's wives but also their daughters. He continuously rapes and drugs random women he finds at the bar, but still thinks it's better to admit that he does and feel proud of it rather than to deny or feel guilty that he does like Brian. On top of that the few women that he did hit it off with have his children that he neglects to see so he can't even call Brian a terrible father when he abandons hundreds of his own children. And in recent episodes, he acts like a sad, pathetic, and boring old cat lady, so there's no right for him to call anyone else a bore. Plus his career as a pilot is kind of questionable. He does a lot of weird things during his shifts and often puts his passengers lives in dangwr because of his own antics.

To be fair at least 2-3 of his points were so much worse if they were turned around on him.
Brian may be a bad Father, but at least he's a Father at all. Although he never sees his son, at least he and the entire show recognizes the boy exists. For Quagmire, at least 80% of his children, for as far as he or any of Family Guy's viewers know, don't exist.
Although Quagmire is open about his sexual tendencies and disrespect toward women, that doesn't excuse the fact he's quite literally a sexual offender.
Quagmire has also hit on Lois several times (as well as other women obviously). Just cause he doesn't anymore doesn't excuse it.
Brian is a lousy writer unfortunately, he got him there. Brian doesn't exactly have a definitive job that he can be considered good at, and therefore no money to pay people back. Stewie literally had to torture Brian just for him to pay the kid back.
Brian isn't exactly a bore neccesarily, but he's definitely less charismatic and comedic than Quagmire. But that's because Brian's usually more mature and sophisticated than Quagmire. Unfortunately most of his sophisticated talk is bs.

Quagmire really does have a point. Besides Lois and Peter, Brian has probably had the worst character development during the duration of the show. In seasons 1-3, he was a good character, he was the one there to talk sense into others but he still a hint of humor and sarcasm. Seasons 4-8, he was starting to grow into a douchebag, but still a bit tolerable. But season 9 is where it all started to go downhill with the characters. I feel like when Seth MacFarlane started to get less and less involved in the writing of the show, the other writers just started to take ahold of the show themselves and didn't put as much care into the episodes as before. Perfect comparison is Spongebob. Seasons 1-3 were pristine. Perfect writing and hilarious episodes. After the first movie, Stephen Hillenburg started to get less involved in the writing but once Hillenburg stopped getting involved in the writing process and then eventually died, the other writers *cough* Paul Tibbet *cough cough* turned the entire show into a shit show. It looks like something they would show in a nursery while the mom is recovering after delivering the baby. See what I mean? Once the creators get less and less involved in the show's production, it will eventually turn into a nonsensical steaming pile of shit that no one will watch and enjoy anymore.

It’s not so much about character development. Rather it’s Flanderization. The characters are exaggerated to the point where they’re not even real people anymore.
The reason why this works so much is that Quagmire’s rant is Seth apologizing for turning Brian into his soapbox for political views.

I legit agree. There is nothing to like about Holden. Not only is Holden a “spoiled brat”, he’s also a self-righteous ass. Throughout the entire book, especially in the beginning, he talks badly about people, but he’s the only good person in his school. He doesn’t say it directly, but Holden definitely implies that. Let’s operate under the assumption that Brian is a real life person. He also tries to be the voice of reason, or the “smart one”, in the obviously dysfunctional family. That’s the sort of thing Brian would bring up in a formal conversation, shift attention towards himself. Do you know how short ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ would have been, if Holden humbled himself, shortly after the conversation with his former teacher.

Rule of thumb is, if someone makes it clear that they’re not interested in being friends with you, it’s best to just leave them be. Forcing yourself upon them will only irritate them more. But I can understand where Brian is coming from though, Quagmire used to be cool with Brian in the earlier seasons and then just started being rude asf to him out of nowhere. If I were him that would leave me pretty confused too.

Brian started to be the bad he is today after the early seasons (4-7 season) and then get worse in the rest of seasons. Quagmire is a sex offender but atleast he is inteligent, there could be at least one thing that made Quagmire say "This guy is not so good" and started to be worst around him more and more as the time passed and Brian get even worse and worse.
