I've lived in the US, Los Angeles for 13 years. Growing up in the UK, I never understood how or why the translation is so misunderstood, until he told the passport control story and then repeated it to his players and expected a positive reaction. Now I completely understand the problem. How he'd expect that to be some kind of motivational speech in Leeds is bananas
It’s wonderfully refreshing to get some insight on the experience of my fellow countrymen and to also appreciate the clear and concise questions cultivated by this cerebral Englishman. Well, what I also extracted from this fascinating interview is that my calculations were terribly mistaken thinking I have been corresponding with Jesse Marsch via LinkedIn 🤣 As a North American who first fell in love with soccer/football during my early teens and knowing how it was difficult to watch a single EPL back in the ‘90’s,it really evokes those emotions for I can relate to Mr. Marsch. Anyhow,I was laughing listening to Simon Jordan’s analysis about North American/US football managers, and I was thinking if he only knew ie. Most of the select clubs/private soccer academies let alone universities let alone MLS teams seem to always prefer “foreign” coaches,so for Jesse Marsch it was nothing new I reckon . Hell, I love this sport I am fortunate to travel abroad and even try to volunteer my services,so I can be more knowledgeable of the sport and other leagues from across the globe, but no bones about there is a sense of pretentiousness for foreign coaches I reckon in England ie. I distinctly remember the vituperation of the English media towards Arsene Wenger for signing foreign players and back then the Seria A was the best league, but now look how the EPL has been transformed as now the best football league in world;why,my humble opinion because of Arsene Wenger and the likes of non English football managers. Simons statement about us being salesmen,it’s funny that’s what I think of most these English managers in the EPL and whom I also like;why, trophy-less and just good with the gab!🤣
I'm a life long Leeds fan. I must say, when Marsch speaks about himself it sounds like he is talking about someone else entirely. I have never see anyone speak themselves up as this guy, it makes my toes curl. He was at best, below mediocre at Leeds. He promissed to make something out of nothing, he actually made nothing out of something and yet-he struts around like he's king sh#t from turd mountain!
But Leeds were in free fall in ‘22 and he stabilized the club. People say it was Raphinha not him. But Raphinha was there before him. I don’t get it. Why can’t people give him credit for that season. ‘23 was a failure of course
I really like this series by Simon Jordan, the frankness from Simon and his guests, especially the football interviews. But this one with Marsch is among the very best in my opinion. Also, as a Man United fan, an indictment of the players and the ownership/ management of the club. And people keep pointing at managers.
They give this guy such a hard time for being an American. The media in this country. It's wrong. There's a word for this in the UK. And btw, I'm not an American
Really eye opening podcast that gets the real answers we want to know. Simon has been the standout on talksport for years now, in my opinion, and this podcast excels his reputation even further!
He's full of it, uses fancy words out of context. But he's ok I like some of his stuff but he's clearly a bit insecure because he's from a working class background but likes to think of himself of some big wig
As a Leeds fan I wanted Marsh to succeed but sadly anyone following Biesla was always going to have an uphill struggle. Bielsa galvanised a city & fans further afield such as myself who travels to Elland Road from Southampton. Sadly the goings on behind the scenes was always going to be our downfall & Jesse couldn't help that. Whilst Jesse speaks highly of Victor Orta I strongly feel that he (Victor) ultimately was largely to blame for our demise. You need to look back at a huge amount of players that he scouted & bought into Elland Road that just were not good enough for Premier League football with Adams being the only US football who cut the grade but sadly we didn't see enough of him in a Leeds shirt. Id like to wish Jesse all the very best. Another great podcast Simon, its so refreshing to hear a voice in the media that lives in the real world (albeit bashed with the rich stick but having read your book its clear that hardworking paid off) & prepared to call things for what they are!!
His uphill struggle was the fact he was fkn clueless! The man didn't realise that you could score headers at the far post and thinks it's only a premier league thing! Big Sam that fat bloated 20 pints of Stella shart of a man complained that the players were unfit.... BIG FKN SAM CALLING PLAYERS UNFIT! The proof was there considering every game under Marsch the team was knackered by the 60th minute Player "he Jesse we've been struggling at set pieces should we get some practice in?" Jesse: "no I've got a better idea.... let's watch a netflix documentary about winning" The netflix viewings, the "leadership group" aka the inmates running the asylum, the bizarre post match interviews where we get battered 5-0 and he says "I think there are positives to take and we controlled the game really well" utterly delusional
Jesse isn't up to the task. He can't cut it up at the top flight. His tactics are terrible. He plays with no width. He's not even fit for the championship He only got saved the first season from relegation because of raphina. He's is a discipline or Ralph hasslehoutn who got sacked the same season because his tactics don't cut it.
I don't know that tactics were the reason for Leeds demise. They were falling apart at the end of Bielsa's tenure who played with plenty of width. Javi Gracia tried a more pragmatic approach, sitting back and hoping for a 1-0 victory. Any way they played they got torn apart. When you lose with that many different kinds of tactics I think it points to personnel being the main issue, it all goes back to Orta like the commenter above said.@@babygravey
I hope Simon Jordan calls this guy out. Tactically clueless, threw Bielsa under the bus to cover himself, he turned a fit group of players into a lethargic squad, he made good players look average (raphinha, kalvin), his entire ideology in football isnt just poor, its incoherent. He took credit when leeds rarely won, even when everyone knows last minute winners are not a positive reflection on tactics. He blamed players for being scared or stressed when we lost. Red flags galore. Not even scratched the surface of why i grew to despise this man
Very interesting interview. I found Jesse engaging and wouldn't be disappointed if he were to pop up down here in Southampton at some point in the future.
Positives: 1) Great interview, credit to both. 2) Jesse is a genuine and great bloke who i think really did love Leeds and gave it his best. 3) I agree, that some of the games we lost were games we should have won, the guys let him down. - Negatives: 1) His ambition outweighed his talent. 2) Talks a lot but doesn't really say much...however i really hope he finds success somewhere down the line
As a Derby fan I thought Marsch was a great appointment. SJ talks more sense than almost all of the other talking heads across all the media formats, the guests to date have been amazing, keep up the good work.
As much as Simon talks about being a realist and saying it how it is, I think there there is no better way to see that than watching these interviews and seeing him on Talksport. There is no difference between the way he portrays himself on both. He continues to be firm ans honest in what he says which makes it such a good listen always.
Same with Marsch. I don't think Brits understand that when Marsch was talking even to the media he was being authentic. For whatever reason Brits seem to think it's fake or salesmanly. American football(gridiron) coaches can be very similar in that we view talking about our teams or to our players in such ways as to provide positive reinforcement to achieve improvement over cutting players down. The cutting players down approach (ie being tough on them) was used in American football pre-1990s then we changed. I use to be an american football coach. After a game, when I'd discuss with a player or the team about the game we had just played I would show them the good things they did before I would bring up the errors that were made, and when discussing the mistakes, you have to say "On this play we need this to happen, as you can see here you did this and so if you make this adjustment you will see a big improvement." Then you work on cutting those mistakes out during the week for the next game. I use to tell our players I expect them to make mistakes. Just don't make the same mistake twice. I think that is philosophically how we view coaching sport here.
Everyone could see the failings in Marsch's tactics, except Marsch. It was kick and rush, try to force an error from the opponents, frantically try not to concede a goal and then repeat. Aaronson epitomised Marsch's time at Leeds, full of energy but no clue what to do when in possession and ultimately out of his depth.
He was as good a manager Leeds could get. Leeds fans think they are entitled to being treated like a big club. But the truth is, they are a championship standard (at best) club and that’s where they will be in another 20 years! I heard 1 Leeds fan saying Leeds were a bigger club than Villa! 🤣😂🤣 absolutely deluded😂
@@clivet3252 😂🤣😂🤦🏻♂️ typical Leeds fan response! Basing the size of the club on a manager they had years ago🤣😂🤣 Truth be told Bielsa is a shit manager, hence why he has never managed a top club like, Liverpool, Man City, Arsenal, Villa etc! Have a word with yourself and give your head a wobble 😂🤣😂🤣
Doing what he did at Leeds, talked a good story that ended up a tall tale. I have visions of the end of the interview, simon has left the cameraman a production team then the janitor turns off the light and Jesse is still sat there talking
Why would he need "evidence" to describe his time at Leeds? Simon asked him the questions, he answered them. I get Leeds supporters may not liked the job he did but it's an interview. @@Hutchyy
The question I'd have with Marsch which I've not heard from Simon is whether the red bull model was the right model for Leeds. So there are two questions to me: one is whether it is just a low ceiling model ie even if successful Leeds weren't going to finish higher than they were in Bielsa's first season in charge- maybe that's part of the reason why Rangnick changed his football at Manchester United. I'd be really interested in whether Marsch thinks there is anything about the style that he got wrong at Leeds or whether it was just the factors he mentions above. Secondly I do wonder whether it was a natural way of evolving from Bielsa. Yes both were high energy- but Bielsa's style of attacking was to use width (hence we had all those wingers) and use possession- whereas Marsch's was all about central play and counter pressing. I always thought it was interesting that Marsch was asking people like Harrison and Raphinha almost as inside forwards when both were more used to playing as wingers. That's a key question I think that Marsch or Orta needed to be challenged on. Appointing him to Southampton after Hassenhutl might have made more sense as an evolution. I think this tactical issue both in terms of whether Red Bull tactics work in England and whether it would work with the Leeds squad is more important than whether Marsch was American or not. Interestingly I do think he did well in his first half season but to me I wondered whether that was because a job as a manager is multifaceted and Marsch does have skills: I can imagine he was good with getting the players as a group together potentially in that first three months but I'm not sure that he was the right tactical fit for Leeds and I wish Simon had got to that.
Any manager that doesn't stay true to themselves will fail. Marsch believes in what he does in the same way Pep believes in what he does. Every manager has tweaks they can do with their system but the foundation is going to be the same.
He will try all he can to get round any responsibility for the failure of last season. He was backed massively in the summer with players that fit his exact playing style. Over that time the on the ball quality and fitness of all existing players dropped off a cliff. They seemed to have no coaching what to actually do when they had the ball, other than kick long or give the other team the ball to win back!
Most of what you said I agree with, but he wasn't as well backed as it may seem. Almost all the money was spent on the midfield and on wingers, and they didn't buy a striker! It's puzzling, because the most important position in Marsch's preferred 4-4-2 was always the 2 strikers. None of this means he's a good manager, but the recruitment from Orta was also pretty poor. Including hiring Jesse in the first place which made no sense
Yeah no doubt orta’s recruitment was a disgrace as was the club neglect of basic positions like st lb and cm. That being said he had Rodrigo in the goalscoring form of his career up top and thought it to be a good idea to bring him on with 10mins to spare against accrington when we were 3-0 up where he immediately got injured in the process effectively losing all our goals from that point on for the season terrible management of the only previously fit striker we had.
@user-rh4qv4gd8t wrong pal! He was well backed, he didn't want a striker. Gnonto was a winger in his eyes. Also he played 4-2-2-2 inverted wingers. He was clueless he didn't use the tactics right players were lost. Its all come out . His transfers were very poor and it cost us. Experienced premier players we should if got in to help stabilise the club. Instead it turned into another laughing show
@@leesawyer323 If he wanted to play 4-4-2, or 4-2-2-2 as you call it...then why did Leeds play every single game of his tenure with 4-2-3-1 shape? It seems pretty obvious that they were short a striker if they couldn't play a single game with 2 up top. And why were they frantically trying to buy Cody Gakpo? Buying a bunch of wingers and midfield players means nothing if you can't convert the chances that they make. Bamford in particular cost Leeds many points in the table. Not that it's really his fault, Leeds came up short in the window and by the time they got Rutter it was too late.
As a Leeds fan it’s quite refreshing to see what he was like behind the scenes because I don’t think we saw enough of that Another fine interview Simon 👍
You ain't a Leeds fan if you have anything less than utter contempt for this man... We didn't see behind the scenes? Clearly you don't know about the skipping training to watch netflix documentaries, or the old useless players like Cooper, Ayling and Bamford being the "leadership group" and dictating team selection.... Of course there's his tactical genius like when we're winning 3-0 against league 2 opposition in the cup sending on your top scorer with 2 minutes left to play and oh no he's injured for the rest of the season....
Personally whilst I don't want to give the guy masses of praise, I also think the results we got at the time he was in charge were pretty unlucky. We generated so many chances but couldn't finish at all. Football whilst being purely judged on points in the end is about much more than that.
That the same Bielsa who was getting pumped 5 -0 every week? Marsch to be fair maybe didn't play the same football but what he said is true. They never really got hammered and did deserve to win quite a few games they ended up losing
Radz said he saw similarities, too. The fans didn't. I wonder if he changed his approach because we were struggling and Bielsa was sacked. That was the most important thing about Bielsa - he stuck to his principles.
Loving the conversations with such a variety of people from all sports. Even conversations with people I didn’t realise I’d want to listen to are a great watch.
As a Yorkshireman living in America. I can admire Jesse’s drive, a typical American trait which we could learn a lot from in England. HOWEVER, his credentials did not equal a premier league club or a big championship side. He should have proved his worth at lower league level, earning the right to move up the ladder. Hope your wife is healthy Jesse.
@@MarkNorbury His ideas on Leeds was deluded. Americans in general have the glass half full mentality rather than us half empty. That’s why their comedy films are dreadful 🤣
As it says Simon is no nonsense and that's why we love him!! He waits for the right moment and BANG goes in with a question we want (unlike others who interview) I'm a Pompey fan looking in i always thought Jesse didn't stand a chance at Leeds as the fans still hurting from Bielsa going so its a impossible task like following Sir Alex and Wenger but all his talk around data and percentages 🥱 very American!! a spade is a spade mate and i wish you did take the Southampton Job would of taken them down quicker 🤣
Good interview! I think Jesse believes in what he says. I'm not sure we , as brits, get that blind optimism he seems to have. I didn't mind him at Leeds and would have let him finish that final season. I would have liked to have seen if he could have kept us up and he's right there were several games where we should have won. That said I love Farke so all the best Jesse!
The main failure was when the board decided to make the change in manager, the timing made no sense after the January window - before the world cup break would've given us a chance. I agree that they may as well have given him till the end of the season after waiting till February to sack him, but a better option would've been making the change earlier after seeing that it obviously wasn't working.
Great interview love your views Simon. As a Leeds fan no animosity to Jesse the guy was honest and tried hard but ultimately failed. Following Marcelo was always going to be hard. Good luck to him I like his positivity.
Great interview with Jesse March. Definitely good to see football and management from a US perspective. Simon really touched on great topics with Marsch.
Talk is cheap why doesn't Jordon go manage a team then he can talk about it it's easy being a armchair critic. why hasn't he got the golden generation Gerald, Lampard, Rooney, on and criticize them.
Marsch is right. It’s very tight. With just a bit more luck it would have been 2 more wins and a completely different outcome. You don’t always get what you deserve. That ‘s part of what makes football what it is. There’s luck involved unless you are very much better than your opponent. Unlike before at the end of Bielsa’s regime and afterwards all our losses then were by a single goal. Wober and Koch were beginning to look solid. Bamford scored a magnificent goal last week that gets better every time I watch it. If he had just scored that penalty against Arsenal…
He had plenty of lucks, we stayed in PL because in the last match Brentford went down to ten men by a silly red card, or his first win against Wolves, they went down to ten men leading 2-0, there are more lucky wins, in his first year. He should have been sacked before WC.
Never forget that when Radz wanted to sack Marsch and bring in Unai Emery before the world cup Victor Orta threatened to quit..... Now look where Villa are and look where the hell we are...
Marsche's first games were winnable games, expected teams in position as Leeds, Bielsa played his last 6 games against teams in the upper half of the table, Marsch was given a easier run. Not a great coach/manager.
He had plenty of luck go his way already - Brentford at the end of the season, Wolves getting an undeserved red card, the jammy way they snuck past Liverpool. What he was lacking was any kind of game sense
"I talked about the similarities with Marcelo and myself..." "Which were what?" NOTHING! We cried when Marcelo left, we danced when Jesse did! Deluded.
Marsch was backed largely in the transfer market and it didn’t work out immediately. I personally felt his gameplans were very heavy on pressing, but always looked out of ideas when in possession. Missed the ‘killer instinct’ that you need in making the most of chances in the premier league and ultimately paid the price for it.
I do not think he would have been backed in the market if we didn’t get the money from raphinha and Phillips. The eye test showed we were trending in the right direction and if we had a clear goal scorer there is no doubt we would’ve stayed up
Americans understand English culture just as much as a German Coach, a Spanish coach, an Argentinian coach, an Italian coach. To say an American can't be a good coach in the EPL because he's American is stupid.
Jesse Marsch has many good qualities and you can see his desire and will to win, is up there with the best but his pride sometimes gets in the way. Spot on about negative British Culture and the British Media tho.
Simons straight to the point and really cuts the crap this interview optimises this, no messing around right into the meat of what people want to know about Marcsh
Not sure why Leeds fans have such hate. He comes across as a very authentic; passionate and decent man. Many clubs would employ him Im sure. Another fantastic interview. Thanks Simon.
On paper Jesse had the right ideas to follow on from Marcelo Bielsa but, honestly, whoever came in after him would have found it tough! Bielsa was god in our eyes and the best thing to happen to our club on a level since Don Revie.
The right ideas like playing really really narrow so every premier league winger gets a free run at the box? Those tactics? Or was it the fact that the team was so unfit they were dying by the 60th minute of every game? Even Big Sam complained the players weren't fit
I have been listening to the series on Spotify on the longer journeys I do. I have really enjoyed ot through. This episode was a great listen. Keep up the great work.
Class. Simon honestly takes no prisoners especially when someone tries to sugar coat failure. Jesse looks like he could be a good manager just not in England.
Truly, as an American, I'll never forgive Leeds "supporters" for their fair weather approach and what have you done for me lately attitude. Disgusting scenes online that soured my opinion. Early days they seemed great fans, now I'll be rooting to see them relegated over and over. Even Chelsea fans have more class.
I’m one of the few fans that actually liked Jesse, at the end of the day he gave us an extra season in the Prem when we were down and out. He didn’t capitalise on that the following season but a lot of it had to do with other factors. He deserved to get sacked but didn’t do terribly given the circumstances. Lost our 2 best players and had to build around that. Not an easy task.
I look forward to Simon cutting through the nonsense during this episode, but for Marsch to absolve himself regarding his part on Leeds relegation screams lack of accountability.
The fact is he was nowhere near good enough. Whoever thought replacing bielsa with Marsch would work. As Simon Jordan once said he hasn’t got the chops to manage Leeds and he was right. Great talker nice guy but ultimately not good enough
Taking into account how Bielsa was performing & the hammerings we were taking. I reckon my old dear would've done a better job than the good old mercenary Marcelo. At least Jesse saved Bielsa's bacon in keeping us up that season.
@@bigfellamot2605 how was he a mercenary though? He made a mistake trusting certain players and not improving squad depth but calling him a mercenary come on😂 let’s hope we get back up this season👍🏻
As somebody who lived in UK for 25 years, and launched a celebrity magazine in the US, Jesse’s point about “celebrity obsessed” versus “tabloid obsessed” is absolutely bang on. A nuance you’d only understand if you’ve lived in both countries. The press in the UK is a disgrace. The way Schofield, Edwards et Al were treated a good example. A miss from Simon there

I'm a life long Leeds fan. I must say, when Marsch speaks about himself it sounds like he is talking about someone else entirely. I have never see anyone speak themselves up as this guy, it makes my toes curl. He was at best, below mediocre at Leeds.
A breath of fresh air from Simon Jordan. Unfiltered, articulate and intelligent. Wonderful listen to these podcasts
Really eye opening podcast that gets the real answers we want to know. Simon has been the standout on talksport for years now, in my opinion, and this podcast excels his reputation even further!
I love this show Simon. Love listening to you. Keep up the amazing work and looking forward to seeing more.
Brilliant as ever - Simon always ensures the guest and himself are upfront!
Jesse should have said to Jordon how did you get on as crystal palace chairman.

Great interview as ever! Love how Simon always says exactly what needs saying in such a well delivered manner!
Another excellent Up Front - Really enjoyed learning about Jesse's journey through the american sports systems to the premier league.
I genuinely wanted him to succeed but the results simply weren't good enough. Will be interesting to see how he does at his next club.
The proof was there considering every game under Marsch the team was knackered by the 60th minute
Player "he Jesse we've been struggling at set pieces should we get some practice in?"
Jesse: "no I've got a better idea.... let's watch a netflix documentary about winning"
The netflix viewings, the "leadership group" aka the inmates running the asylum, the bizarre post match interviews where we get battered 5-0 and he says "I think there are positives to take and we controlled the game really well" utterly delusional
couldnt agree more
Jesse isn't up to the task.
Thats how 95% of managers are unfortunately, they'll last on average for 1 or 2 seasons before getting booted.
Not even scratched the surface of why i grew to despise this man
Last minute winners not a reflection on tactics. Tell that to SAF
Very interesting interview. I found Jesse engaging and wouldn't be disappointed if he were to pop up down here in Southampton at some point in the future.
Southampton have collaborated and bought red bull players before
Positives: 1) Great interview, credit to both.
He's a fkn used car salesman... Utter fraud in every sense of the word
As a Derby fan I thought Marsch was a great appointment. SJ talks more sense than almost all of the other talking heads across all the media formats, the guests to date have been amazing, keep up the good work.
Great show. Would love to see interviews with more modern and active managers.

Best interviewer style podcast I watch, see a bunch of behind the scenes stuff from people you will never normally see, absolutely love it!
As much as Simon talks about being a realist and saying it how it is, I think there there is no better way to see that than watching these interviews and seeing him on Talksport. There is no difference between the way he portrays himself on both. He continues to be firm ans honest in what he says which makes it such a good listen always.
It's just a shame he has his favourites and is selective

@@txbill2512 yeah but he can't back up what he says with evidence
Love the fact he doesn’t hide behind issues. Always willing to say his opinion whether you agree with them or not.
Honest insight and enjoyable listen…. Good luck Jesse with whatever comes next for you.
Instead it turned into another laughing show
He should of brought in 3/4 ready made a premier players not foreign crap championship standard
Another great episode. I have a new found respect for Jesse, it cannot be easy for an American to cut it in England
As a Leeds fan it’s quite refreshing to see what he was like behind the scenes because I don’t think we saw enough of that
Another fine interview Simon 👍
You ain't a Leeds fan if you have anything less than utter contempt for this man... We didn't see behind the scenes? Clearly you don't know about the skipping training to watch netflix documentaries, or the old useless players like Cooper, Ayling and Bamford being the "leadership group" and dictating team selection....
Of course there's his tactical genius like when we're winning 3-0 against league 2 opposition in the cup sending on your top scorer with 2 minutes left to play and oh no he's injured for the rest of the season....
2 wins in 17 games lol are you kidding?
Top interview! Always authentic!
I’ve loved this podcast series. Simon really gets his point across really well but also enables the other person to reply!
Personally whilst I don't want to give the guy masses of praise, I also think the results we got at the time he was in charge were pretty unlucky. We generated so many chances but couldn't finish at all. Football whilst being purely judged on points in the end is about much more than that.
Plus leeds had on one in goal. Jesse down fall was not getting rid of the useless Meslier.
Bamford, Ayling and Cooper didn't do us any favours when actually fit enough to play either.
Bamford lack of quality in front of goal was abysmal
"You're here to save us?" If only they knew. "I talked about the similarities between Marcelo Bielsa and myself". Couldn't have taken long.
That the same Bielsa who was getting pumped 5 -0 every week?
Marsch to be fair maybe didn't play the same football but what he said is true. They never really got hammered and did deserve to win quite a few games they ended up losing
@@kevinmcnicoll8649maybe if he'd taken more risks and not been scared of getting done 5-0 he'd have won more games.
Radz said he saw similarities, too. The fans didn't. I wonder if he changed his approach because we were struggling and Bielsa was sacked. That was the most important thing about Bielsa - he stuck to his principles.

As a Yorkshireman living in America. I can admire Jesse’s drive, a typical American trait which we could learn a lot from in England.

NOTHING! We cried when Marcelo left, we danced when Jesse did! Deluded.
We didn't want you to have the leeds job. We also wanted bielsa. But with more backing from above.
The eye test showed we were trending in the right direction and if we had a clear goal scorer there is no doubt we would’ve stayed up
I still think Leeds would of stayed up if they kept him

The right ideas like playing really really narrow so every premier league winger gets a free run at the box? Those tactics? Or was it the fact that the team was so unfit they were dying by the 60th minute of every game? Even Big Sam complained the players weren't fit

I’m one of the few fans that actually liked Jesse, at the end of the day he gave us an extra season in the Prem when we were down and out.
