    There's a point in this presentation where one of the difficulties for breeding axolotls is demonstrated: It's easy to release a bucket of tropical fish into the water rather than feeding an axolotl, whereupon the axolotls usually kill the fish before you can get it back into the bucket. I have learned to hold a bucket of tropical fish in each hand when feeding axolotls; that keeps the axolotls' attention focused on the buckets of fish, so they aren't darting around. I've also noticed that if you accidentally take a fed axolotl into a bucket, the breeding process is interrupted such that you'll have to feed the axolotls again before they'll breed, so be careful with your buckets! Otherwise, thanks for the timely video, Pixlriffs; I just cleared an ocean monument near my base and need to build a squid farm. This design will do nicely.

    • @mintycheddar3854
      @mintycheddar3854 2 года назад

      Following up: I built the squid farm shortly after posting the previous comment. It covers six chunks and is divided into four rectangular sections, each containing sixteen axolotls. It works very well, producing all the ink sacs (and fish) that I will need in my solo survival world. If you build a squid ink farm, be sure to include lighting in the floor to prevent drowned spawning. I noticed a couple of things during construction. First, axolotls can cross between sections under the line of hoppers. A solid wall behind the hoppers prevents that. Second, attempting to empty a bucket of axolotl directly into the water often does not work. Aiming at the face of a solid block, such as a floor or wall in the water, works much better.

    While the guardian farm looks very nice, it doesn't seem very effective. Even with looting and a roof over the spawning tanks, the drops from the farm can apparently be handled by a standard 'single-speed' hopper item sorter 25:19. For comparison, the guardian farm I built (based on shulkercraft's video) was far faster to build (no draining of the monument), doesn't have a roof, and doesn't use looting, and yet requires at least 4 or 5 hopper lines to keep up with the drops.
    So, either that item sorter is killing efficiency, or the farm's rates are far too low to justify the build effort.

    If you build a small platform on top of an ocean monument above the water with a hide box around it and hang out for 5-6 min the guardians will kill all squid in the vicinity. Just swim around or boat around grab all the ink then go hide again so the guardians don't focus on you instead of the squid. You can get a few stacks in about 20 ish min. Slower than a farm yes, but effective early game.

    spawn-proofing against drowned is a bit of a chore, since unlike other hostile mobs they don't need a solid surface to spawn on. They just need a 2 high block of water (source or flowing) where the light level is 0 at the lower water block. In rivers, this can be all the way to the top of the river. Luckily, all you need to do is light up the tank.

    The problem is since the Nether update, overworld biomes are partially 3D. That is, the borders aren’t a solid vertical line. If you check different y-values, you get different biomes (you could even see it as you were bobbing up and down in the river).
    Since that update, even existing biomes have changed their exact outline twice. A good demonstration would be the minihud mod which can show biome (and structure) borders.

I love that they did stuff like change world height and add more varied caves, but it also feels like they didn't think a lot of things through. And certain things like biome borders staying "flat" as you go up or down shouldn't have been messed with at all. They could have superimposed the new 3D lush cave biomes on top of the old system IMHO.

    Drowned do spawn at light level 0. Assuming you were not AFKing at night, those were probably zombies that spawn nearby and walked towards water, either because you were close enough or might be a pathfinding bug. There was an issue with mobs on fire not searching for water so maybe the buffed that in a way that overrides the 32+ block rule. If you AFKed at night, drown could've spawned near the surface.

      If Cod are spawning, you're building in an ocean biome. Which is fine, but if there's a large ocean nearby, the squid are probably spawning there and not inside your farm.

    The squid farm dilemma on servers should have been resolved with the 1.18 per-player mob cap change. That change affects all mob caps, not just the one for hostile mobs.
    As far as drowned spawning is concerned, they do indeed require zero block light, but also keep in mind that skylight only prevents them from spawning in shallow water during the day with clear weather. Rain will reduce the thickness of the spawn-proof area, and night or thunderstorm will completely disable spawn-proofing through sky light.
    One fun piece of info I figured out during a bit of research on mobcaps: I originally thought only hostile mobs can spawn every tick and everything else has a 20 second spawn cycle, but that's actually only the case for the "creature" mob category, i.e. land animals and striders.
    If you are interested in some mobcap-related debug information, the F3 screen lists the caps in the line starting with "SC:" in the order "Monster", "Creature", "Ambient", "Axolotls", "Underground water creature", "Water creature", "Water ambient", and "Misc" (mobs that don't count to any other mobcap, such as villagers), each denoted by their first letter and the number of mobs counting towards the cap in that category.

    • @Pixlriffs
      @Pixlriffs  2 года назад

      Assuming the server is running on the default settings, but I know most servers will probably want to run a more configurable server jar and they might have a different approach to the global mob cap. It’s worth knowing the options, either way.
      I actually put the glowstone in there on stream, when two drowned spawned at the bottom of the tank during (I think) the middle of the day. It could’ve been raining, now that I think of it. Still expected the glowstone to deal with spawns during the night, but I guess block light might not reach the diagonals.

    • @TheRealWormbo
      @TheRealWormbo 2 года назад

      @@Pixlriffs I guess the point about modded servers like Spigot or Paper is valid, but then again, those are configurable enough that many parts of the Survival Guide may not apply exactly. There's options that affect iron golem spawning, zombies tracking towards turtle eggs, nether portal generation/linking mechanics, and many other things you might take for granted. Notably those server implementations are the origin of the "redstone may break under lag" myth.

    Why are there villagers for the swamp and jungle but no villages. Is it because of lack of spawnable space for a village.

    • @Pixlriffs

      I think it's a combination of the terrain not being very friendly for villager pathfinding, and the fun of there being two 'secret' types of villagers for players to discover on their own.

    If you put 1 block holes in the central dividing wall the axolotl's will be able to freely move from side to side and the squids won't making it they go to which ever side needs their attention the most.

      Minecraft has some weird AI behavior. It's just as likely they'd all wind up in one side of the farm because they have a slight tendency to move in a certain direction. Like bees - when they get lost from their hives they'll gradually migrate towards the northwest (negative X and Z) over time even though they buzz around in circles doing it.

      No. Guardians will kill squid in the open ocean, but once you’ve converted it into a farm, squid don’t spawn in the bounding box of an ocean monument so you’ll never see them in the guardian farm

    For the ink getting stuck under the hoppers, you could use waterlogged trapdoors along the edges of the hoppers to block those little spaces from being accessible

    • @jekentmenietje
      @jekentmenietje 2 года назад +1

      But then items would get stuck under the edge of the trap doors. you would have to do trap doors all the way to the bottom to prevent that, and that would cost a lot of spawning spaces (and it would be pretty expensive)

    • @Pixlriffs
      @Pixlriffs  2 года назад +9

      Hey Tiger Gamer!
      Just want to tell you that the squid farm from the first season had to be split over two episodes because it took a really long time to build, a lot more resources, involved drying much more of the river, and is made obsolete by simple mechanics in this update. It is perfectly adequate for my needs and not a massive grind to create.
      If this farm is too slow you just need to add more axolotls, and - let's be real here - as long as it is functional, the only thing you need to do is AFK at it for longer.

      I believe he has Item Filters separating the Mob Drops, and the Cooked Cod is separated out over the Cactus and destroyed, and the Raw Cod is stored to be Traded to Fishermen for Emeralds later on.

    • @VulpisFoxfire
      @VulpisFoxfire 2 года назад

      @@_Abjuranax_ More accurately, he has the two shards and the raw cod filtered into their storage spots, and anything else (which in this case is just the cooked cod) gets dumped into a 4th spot, which is the dispenser into cactus.

    • @VulpisFoxfire
      @VulpisFoxfire 2 года назад +1

      Basically, it's just a sorting system where anything not sorted out into storage (or even just plain overflow, presumably), gets dropped onto the cactus.
