- How do you know if you NEED a BIGGER TANK? The right sized tank for YOU and YOUR FISH will keep everyone happy. This video will show you various tank sizes, how to determine the right size aquarium for you AND the right size aquarium for your fish. This information is for community tropical fish, but I also discuss aquarium sizes for African cichlids and African cichlid tanks, and even a bit about American cichlids. Enjoy and leave a comment if you've enjoyed the video. Thanks!
Cichlid Charmer is dedicated to sharing the joy of keeping African cichlids and American cichlids and sharing information about them. Much of my content is not cichlid fish specific, however. It also pertains to all tropical fish aquariums. I will share what I have learned about cichlids and other fish, and everyone is welcomed to comment with their own experiences and information about fish and aquarium practices in general.

What size tank do you have? And what do you have in it? Is this large enough? Let us know what you think!
Why do delete my comment? Unsubscribed 👎
@@simonclayton2038 if I deleted a comment it was on accident unless it had something very offensive to my viewers or it was trolling. If that wasn’t your comment, then sorry, must have done so in error, and sad to see you go 😢
After my comment went missing I commented again & that went missing too. I only answered your question & talked about my tank size & fish I have. Seems a bit strange?
@@simonclayton2038 it IS strange. I really don’t know what happened to it. I’ve only ever deleted one comment on purpose. The comment was “I bet your house smells like sh*t.” Didn’t see any value at all there. I even keep the ones that say I’m an idiot or weird looking 😂
@@simonclayton2038 I also just checked my "held for review" comments in case youtube accidentally held it for some reason. Not there. Sorry man! I don't know why your comments aren't there.
Excellent video
Thank you, Julia!
Hey thanks Thais awansaers everything
You’re welcome. Thanks for the comment!
Got my eye on a small Betta setup for my office desk. Down ther rabit hole we go. Weeeeeeee!
Hahaha I almost bought a 5 gal setup for me with a betta. Actually bought the tank and supplies, but then I just gave it to my wife. I should have kept it though. She isn’t quite as crazy insane for fish like I am. Any particular kind of betta?
@@CichlidCharmernot decided yet. Will see what’s available. I like most of them, especially Veil tail and double tail. Crown tail also look amazing. Too many to choose from
@@dascudder I found it hard to decide because there were so many gorgeous ones.
I have a facination with the tiny but mighty Multi's! Can do a 20 long but they like ALOT of floor space so its always bigger is better. If i were to do a multi tank i would probably do a 75 gallon. I realize that's outside your rule but if you know Multi's.😊
I don’t know that much about multis, but a 75 seems really big for some multis. I think their sand-relocation practices would drive me 😜
@@CichlidCharmerI had multis in a 90 but I also had some julies and another group of shellies
75 gallon, electric blue acara, severum, and geophagus
This is great information thank you for sharing, my new tank is a 40gal high, 36x13x20 and with 6 Ram Cichlids and about 10 other total fish, with all the plants and hiding huts, rock and driftwood my tank is a bit crammed. But I looked at the space I wanted a tank (well had room for) and got this size. Now I wish I would have just gotten a bigger one or my problem is I can't stop putting things in this tank....my bad I know! Again thank you for your info this should really help all, oh by the way your house is very cool!
Sounds like a great tank for those rams though. I like the low tanks. When I saw that low 55 I was tempted. Too bad I always had the regular 55s all those years. Thank you, Polly!
I like higher tanks thinking there's more room for the fish to swim, not sure if I have seen a 55gal low one probably must have right, with this hobby it's really easy to get carried away well for me! Nah I think you did great with the higher tank!@@CichlidCharmer
@@pollylewis9611 I’m pretty happy. If they were any taller, it would be hard to reach the bottom. That’s one reason why I didn’t get a 30” tall tank.
No kidding even with my 20" high tank I'm pulling up my sleeves and I have long arms. @@CichlidCharmer I'd be swimming anything higher!
I’ve gone from 10 tanks ranging from 55-180g to having a 75 rift and a 5 gallon reef. But I replaced my other tanks with reptiles lol. I am planning to upgrade my rift tank to a 6ft tank, either 125 or 180g this year
Those sound challenging. I am excited for you to get your 6-footer tank 😎
@@CichlidCharmer Its the right amount of challenge lol
I have a 125 gallon peacock and hap tank, firemouth in a 40 gallon breeder with columbian tetra and Honduran red point cichlid, 40 gallon rainbow cichlid and a electric blue Texas cichlid in a grow out tank and 20 gallon long with 10 neon tetra and 2 rams.
Next month I will have south american 125 and shoal of firemouths in a 125.
@@dennispeleg7843 both sound awesome 😎
I agree alot with with your saying , there is even SOME fish that get big that seems to do a bit better in smaller tanks for example bichirs i had 2 small ones ( 2-3 inchers ) in my 100 gallon and they struggled alot to find food etc and when i moved them to my 20g temporarily they got alot more active , ate alot better and grew alot faster , ( ofc i wouldnt keep them there forever ) but there is actually even a thing where TO big of a tank isnt good for baby / smaller fish since they'll struggle to get food , my advice would be to google + watch youtube + ask the fish store ! and even just in general just talk talk talk to every fish enthusiast you come by there is always something new to learn and different way to look at things
This is exactly what I’m talking about. You have all this experience to share with everyone and it is so helpful. It’s hard to get everything into one video, but it’s great to get the conversations going. Thank you so much for your comment 🥰
@@CichlidCharmer thanks
@@barafisk9633I agree, I had a 180 poly tanks with a WC sen, ornate, delhezi, weeksii, 2 endi and some red tail cuda a gold wolf and an odoe. I had to move the polys to a 55 until they got some size because they couldn’t find the food before those greedy characins would eat it all. They were all around 2-4” when I got them and I was able to put the polys back in the 180 once they all hit 6-7” without issue
Awesome video Cichlid Charmer. I always laugh at the tank sizes that are listed for fish at big box stores. Like Oscar 55 gal. lol I have a 98 gal and it’s taller vs longer. I put fish in that are CA cichlids who want height instead of length. I sent you pictures actually. I want to get a 6 ft tank or 8 ft one day. Yeah I laugh at the 1 in per gallon rule. I prefer a 20 long over a 20 tall. The tetras and fish like the extra room vs height. Definitely do the research of the fish before you buy it great recommendations. ❤😂🎉
Thank you, Jeremy. I feel sorry for all those fish in too small tanks, and I know there are tons of them. Most people aren’t really into it like we are, and they have limited knowledge, not understanding how much research they need to be doing.
I actually filed a complaint with my local PetSmart. I overheard the employee say” well, an Oscar gets 10” and it’s 1” per gallon, so a 10 should be fine”
It took everything I had to walk away
@@NotSure876 I feel so badly knowing there are fish like that in little boxes. Breaks my heart. Like a dog chained up in the back yard his whole life.
@@CichlidCharmer ya it sucks, I think only hobbyist level stores should sell fish like that, the chains should stick to small community fish.
@@NotSure876 bingo.
At 6:52 there appeared to be an albino heckelii although it may have been a geophagus. If it was an albino heckelii you should add it to your 180. As far as tanks go, moving mine downstairs to a concrete floor opened up a lot of possibilities although I wish I could keep them in my living space like you do. For most people with smaller fish, the 40 breeder or the 75 are the most versatile options. There is quite a bit of surface area that will accommodate swimming and territorial needs as well as more room for aquascaping. Both are routinely 50% off at Petco. As you said, the cost doesn’t end there. A $50 40 breeder can still cost a few hundred dollars when set up depending on how you do it. Currently I have 3 75’s, two 40 breeders and a 180. Anything new will be 6’ by 2’ or more, but there are still millions of possibilities for great tank set ups if that is what fits the space and the budget.
Ah yes, that fellow is an electric blue acara. He is actually in the 180. We just moved almost two years ago, but that house had a basement and it was ready to receive LOTS of big tanks.
@@CichlidCharmerAh, that is your tank, isn’t it. That must have been one of your tapajos off to the right of your Electric Blue Acara
@@scotp6362 yeah. Just angels, tapajos, the acara and an oto in there
3:48 if you use that method, the same 15 guys may want to come again to see the tank once its ready. So you need to use 30 guys.
I have a dining table for 10 people in front of the tank and its suppported on the same joints as the tank.
😂 must be working out for you on those joists. That is very good. Very very good!
What do you think I have a 75 gallon long mbuna tank and that’s all I can get for my space. Do you think that’s OK?
I’m not a big mbuna guy. I really only know the basics. I think I’ve heard that a 75 works well for them since they stay smaller and have their hiding places, but I don’t know for sure. Sorry!
@@CichlidCharmer your fine👍. you should see the rock tunnels I have for them it’s crazy they love it! I did it about four days ago
@@Mcgee18 that sounds incredible!

How’s things going? Any updates?
It’s going okay, Scrat. So I have some guys that seem unaffected. I lost more than what I mentioned in the last video.
