There are some really stunning cichlids in this list! Watch me as I take you online and do a mock shopping spree for these cichlids. Let me know what your favorite American cichlids are!
Cichlid Charmer is dedicated to sharing the joy of keeping African cichlids and American cichlids and sharing information about them. Much of my content is not cichlid fish specific, however. It also pertains to all tropical fish aquariums. I will share what I have learned about cichlids and other fish, and everyone is welcomed to comment with their own experiences and information about fish and aquarium practices in general.

How did I do with the list? Do you have any better suggestions for me? Let me know!
Guinacara and Gymnogeophagus species. That size cichlid has been over represented by electric blue acaras across the world. Both genus have a variety of cool species to choose from and can be background options for bigger South American Center Piece cichlids
@@voultronix761 jotting those down to research them. Sounds good 👍
@@CichlidCharmernext on my list when I upgrade my tank size is the vieja fenestrata
@@rustyfan89 vieja ♥️
@@CichlidCharmer I really like them , I’ve never had one though I’ve downsized my tanks and don’t have a tank big enough to house them , but soon, I’ve been trying the whole nano thing but small fish just aren’t the same!
I have a 150 gallon American cichlid tank, Philippine Angels, Red Spotted Severums, Geophagus Tapajos, Electric Blue Acaras and a mixed origin clean up crew in a planted tank. The Severum chew some plants more than others, it is a learning process but doable. Am waiting for my 3 Electric Blue Jack Dempseys, the idea being later keeping one strong male to pair up with a regular female. Have done that before with good results, they are amazing fish, my favorites so far. On my wish list is a Central American cichlid Cryptoheros Spilirum, sometimes named other Latin first names but always ending with either Spilirum or Spilirus. On the smaller size, but beautiful semi aggressive fish that do well in a community setup I am told. Am moving up to a 190 gallon tank in a few days, it gives much more options and I really should have done that size right away.
Vieja Argentea would be my choice for a central American.
That’s a good one, Gil - thanks!
I bought a electric blue jack Dempsey and it is the most beautiful freshwater fish I have seen it eats like a big and is aggressive love it
Ooo nice! I have one but he isn’t doing too well atm.
I think you should look into black belt, Cichlids and pearl cichlids. They’re cool looking fish.
Looked them up - the pearls aren’t doing it for me, but the black belt 🤘🤩
Wow, thank you for showing us your "wish list" any and all those would be so cool in a tank you can watch all day long, wishes and dreams can come true right, again thanks for all of your hard work putting these together for us all to enjoy!
You bet, Polly - thanks for coming back! It’s kinda in the works. Got the wheels rolling anyway.
I would love to see an Oscar and a jack dempsy so long as you have the shoelace it’s on of the best combos
Thanks for the comment! Shoelace?
@@CichlidCharmer space is what I meant to say
I think it would be cool for you to a in depth cleaning video, tank and canisters
Thanks for the idea, Dakota!
Uaru are great fish. Kinda reminds you of the Severum but I’ve had them for a while, and they have great fish
I think I want a panda Uaru. Those are aweaome 🤩
Wow love your wish list! Last year I finally had the chance to set up my dream tank. Severums, sevni’s, electric blue acara, and a parrot fish. They’re so fun to watch.
That’s so cool, djcom! Glad you were able to make it a reality.
Cichlid Charmer,
Great list you put on there. Jack Dempsey is a beautiful fish I have a female and she is striking and is about 7 to 8 in maybe. She is semi aggressive she is in my 100 gal CA Tank with a Green Terror he is a stunner and can be mixed with CA cichlids. I always wanted a rainbow Cichlid they change colors all the time. I would bypass the Black Nasty and instead add one of my favorites that I have which is a Chocolate Cichlid. Very personable and also has a dark purpleish / orange, a little green and changes color also. Ben Ochart has a couple and i don't know if Cichlid bros has one or maybe they use to. The Red Terror is very pretty fish but is really Aggressive worse than the green terror. I want a Salvini Cichlid but they are really aggressive and need lots of room in the bottom with caves and such. Altogether I have for CA Cichlids. Jack Dempsey (Female), Green Terror, Turquoise Severum, Golden Severum, Chocolate Cichlid, and Red Devil (Female). I want to add a firemouth to the tank as the last fish total of 7 in a 100 gal I have a lot of filtration 2 Tidal 110s and a Expertmatic that is made for 180 gal tank and one sponge filter lol. I have assorted tetras like buenos aires and black skirts as dither fish. I have a few catfish at the bottom that are great clean up crew since CA cichlids are messy eaters. Love watching them all swim around.
Thank you for the info! I looked up chocolate cichlids and they are a lot different than I remembered. Could be a nice addition! I’m excited for all the possibilities.
I have found jack Dempsey’s to vary in behavior and coloration pretty greatly.
That is good to know!
Gotta check out the Red Terror (Festae) and the Cuban cichlid
Very cool fish!
I’ve just started on my American cichlid. Setup a 125 for a grow out with:
1 sunshine Pleco
4 electric blue acaras
2 nicaragüense 1 just colored up, stunning!
1 green terror(gold saum) hoping it’s a male, love the nuchal hump!
1 Jack Dempsey
2 fire mouths
5 red head Tapajós, 4 albino’s red head
I’m upgrading tank to something around a 300g in the next 6 months
Also love the male veija argéntea, and carpintis
I’m jealous! Do you think the acaras will be too timid with those aggressive ones?
Great selection,,, but should look at the PANDA UARU👀👀 that's a good looking fish
Panda Uaru - noted! Thank you 🤗
Just checked it out - gorgeous and cute. Where do you buy them?
Their is also a panda uaru. I think it's much elegant then the regular. Also check out the cuban cichlid. Also the firemouth cichlid.
I just checked out the panda auru. Beautiful! Where do you buy them?
@@CichlidCharmer they are a bit rare to find on line but if I come across any on line I can notify you, their is one pet store in my area that has them full grown but unfortunately im in California.
@@chillwill7s60 I would appreciate that!
I like the electric blue acara a lot. Not too mean and swims around a lot. I keep mine with some Haplochromis obliquidens cichlids and a Haplochromis nyererei. The electric blue acara is a good tank boss and prevents the Victorian cichlids from fighting too much. My Frontosa and brichardi cichlids never get bullied either. The electric blue acara is beautiful too with tons of personality too. He is usually a the top of the tank waiting to be fed.
Yes, he's a good one! I had one, but I believe was sick when I bought him, and he eventually died. You have an eclectic mix of fish in there!
@@CichlidCharmer my strategy is to get very different types of fish so there won’t be too much aggression. I always find that fish that are the same species or similar in appearance, the dominant fish will brutalize the smaller ones. But those that are different looking seem to be left alone. Victorian cichlids seem to fight a lot no matter how different they look. Luckily Victorian cichlids are not very tough like mbunas are.

Love your list! Def got a giggle on the black nasty dad joke.
I have an Oscar, Green Terror, Carpintis, and Pumpkinseed right now in one tank. The other has a black acara, 2 electric blue acara, 2 Geo Sveni, and 2 red spotted Severum. I want to get an Uaru next. Don’t sleep on the Carpintis. They are beautiful and feisty. Good luck in your search!
Thank you! Someone recommended the panda Uaru, and I found one on Predatory Fins. You gotta check that guy out!
Brother the black nasty is my favorite cichlid. I keep srd flowerhorn and Red Devils as well. They are totally worth the investment in a single fish type setup. They are so personable you would love it!!!!
Crap I wish you hadn’t a said that. Now you got me thinking… 🤔 they are so cool
Green Terras are great fush also
Oh yes
The JD was my very first cichlid I ever kept back in 1983, he was better behaved than I had been led to believe but maybe he was just a having a good day everyday haha!
Yes, maybe you made life so wonderful for him that he had no choice but to just be happy!
I relate to the comment about convincing your wife about getting another tank. I'd like to get a new 75-90 gallon to have an African cichlid tank but not sure the wife would allow it right now. I do have a South American tank that includes two severums: a gold and turquoise. What makes the turquoise one interesting is his body color tends to change depending on the time of day. They're great fish but my favorite in that tank though is probably the electric blue acara. the color and activity are both great.
I figure a lot of us are in that same boat with our wives 😂 I like your fish choices - severums are just great all around fish. I didn’t know that about the turquoise 🤩
I have a red gold spot severum, a gold severum, 4 red head tapajos, 3 electric blue acara, and 2 koi angel fish! Also the normal plecos keep my driftwood clean! Loveeeeee South Americans
You’re getting me even more pumped up about Americans now 🤩🤩
@@CichlidCharmer I say do it! You only live once
@@WatsonsAquatics I’m making plans!
You're quickly becoming my favorite aquarium channel.
For your dream tank some anecdotal advice : the 2.5 ft height isnt necessary for central americans . I've noticed that Africans and South americans use the height, whereas centrals control floor space for territory.
Cool list , I'm bias and think alcatraz should be downschaled for this new world cichlid tank. Alternatively you can always get a 75 gallon stackup and keep some of the smaller ones on the list. Not sure how common racked tanks are in the US past 40 gallons.
P.s since I started the hobby 4 years ago I always have a jack dempsey in one of my tanks because theres just something innately special about them !
Well THANKS for the compliment, and thank you for the advice! So when I mentioned the depth, I meant from to back. So far I am still thinking 24” high, but still - possibly 30”. I know that makes it more difficult by far to reach into the tank all the way though. I could only downsize Alcatraz if I rehomed some big boys, but I think I can make this work while keeping the 8 foot tank. I can’t even get over how cool that would be to have two huge tanks. Thanks again!!
You are able to keep the green terror with your african cichlids if you wanted or you could possibly put it in with your angelfish would still be care full because they have long fins
Thank you, but a little too risky for me. My guys are counting on me to keep them safe, and you never know….
@CichlidCharmer I understand your concern I was to when I tried it but it worked out for me with my african cichlids and angelfish.
Jack Dempsey are great
Want one!
@CichlidCharmer first 3 choices are very good looking fish, but remember you need to get them as a couple for them to display their best colours (especially with the texas and jacks)
in my 10 feet tank i was able to keep (Don't be supprised) 1 couple of Amphilopus Trimaculatum and 1 couple of Managuensis cichlid....
They did not allow me adding a third couple.
Oh wow probably worth it though.
Omg all those fish were beautiful You should invest a.
Mbuna tank You didn’t review it, but I thought that chocolate Cichlid was pretty cool there was just a little picture of it.
Yes and I could keep mbuna in a bit of a smaller tank, too. I’ll have to look back at the chocolate cichlid. I have seen them before and they didn’t strike my fancy, if memory serves. Memory doesn’t usually serve though haha. Thanks, Scrat!
@@CichlidCharmer np I would love to see a mbuna tank on this channel for a person who takes care of them like me
They are very very entertaining the way they swim in and out of the rocks aggression is very low. In my tank I think I have a 55 gallon
Maskaheros Regani and Veija Zonata. I have both in my 180 and they are show stoppers.
Nice, Bill!
Where do you purchase your Americans?

Great video. I went with a 8 foot long, 3 feet wide and 2 feet high acrylic tank. I got it from Fish Tanks Direct. I have a bunch of those fish on your list. I do have a 12 inch true parrot. It's really cool how it changes color depending on it's mood
Thank you! You think that’s a pretty good sized tank for those guys then?
@@CichlidCharmer Yes. Plenty of room. I wanted the 3 feet wide for a 3D background and large fish. Unfortunately my stingrays started eating my aquadecor 3D background. I didn't see that coming. Aquadecor sent me a replacement they can't eat. Just getting time to rip the old one out. Check out predatory fins. You may like the bumblebee Oscar.
@@nateavis5686 I can’t believe they ate that!! 🤪 that was nice of Aquadecor.
@@nateavis5686 predatory fins is just the type of store I was looking for. Thanks!
Question, for canister filters does the flow speed affect the intake?
Since it’s all a loop, it does. Water can only come in as fast as it’s going out.
i have several of those.....i would add chocolate cichlid......red breasted chanchito....i enjoy your videos!!
I like the chocolate cichlid, and I will have to look up the other one - thank you for the suggestions and the encouragement!
they have them at imperials@@CichlidCharmer
I got the same wanting a tank I can't afford lmao. I'd love to at least move African cichlids to a 180 or 210. I have a whole garage to setup
Hi Dennis! It really is an addiction. I feel like I would be satisfied and never really need another tank after an American tank is added to the bunch, but experience tells me otherwise 😂 I hope you get your upgrades soon!
@@CichlidCharmer trust me I'm far from done lol. I thought I was done with the 125 peacock and haps but noooooo. Picking up 2 75s next week for my solo electric blue Texas and the other 75 will be for my Honduran red point cichlids and Nicaraguan cichlid tank. Then I have get another tank setup for my small group of rainbow cichlid and move the rams and neon tetra to the 40 gallon breeder. I don't end because I'm also getting ready to do a 125 gallon firemouth shoal tank and 125 south american tank.

where is the Viejas!!!! they're are also very stunning some of them are insanly cool , i cant quite remember the tank size that you mentioned but a very very cool tank idea is also a predetor tank ! with for example : Jaguar cichlid + bichirs + datnoid + lima shark i think its called with white / brown ish sand and logs its STUNNING oh right and even gars IF possible cuban / florida gars , ruclips.net/video/Ujv-I7olw-E/видео.html here is a tank idea , sry for completely changing subject but thats also a idea :P
Yes - viejas and jaguars! Like I said, I’m in the beginning stages of this plan that will hopefully happen. But the list is only 10. You think those guys are better that you mentioned? (Seriously asking, not sarcastic)
@@CichlidCharmer well im a really big fan of bichirs , they're quite chill but honestly just prehistoric as heck look at this video at 1:16 into the video 1 minute 16 seconds its the most stunning fish tank i've ever seen with 2 dinosaur fish ( gars + bichirs ) and the algae looks like mammoth hair. its hard to say what are best i think datnoids / bichirs / gars etc is a bit more slow and chill i do know from experience i had 3 oscars like 8-10 inches in my 190g 2 years ago and i felt i had to move them cuz they would go absolutely insane during feeding smacking the top glass and almost trying to jump out :/
In my opinion, it would be completely sufficient to hear your comment without seeing you - my opinion 🙄
You don’t sound very happy to see me 😂
Uaru is pronounced WA Ru.
Thank you! I eventually figured that out. What a rookie I am 🤪
Please do not abandon your fish. Don't you love them? I get so upset with you guys who seem never be happy with these beautiful fish and always want something else. The christmas moss is not greener on the other side of the tank. These animals rely on you and they are settled into a home they understand and have relationships with their tankmates. Think about your committment to them first.
I first said I’m keeping the Africans. And if I did rehome them, it would be to a good home.
I assume he’s joking about selling off dogs in order to buy fish.
Oh I don’t know… there are a couple of our dogs I might consider selling. Make me an offer if you’re interested 😉
