  • Randy Newberg is joined by Beau Baty of Wilderness Ridge Trail Llamas, and Lucas Burt of Leupold Optics for opening weekend of Montana's elk season. This is a general over-the-counter unit that anyone can go and hunt.
    Using llamas to help pack up their gear, camp and water; they head deep into the public lands of Montana. After setting up camp, they are able to have a whole day to scout before the season opens. They are able to locate several different groups of elk, with high anticipation for the morning.
    They split up for opening morning. Beau hears a bugle right away in the morning. They get well within shooting range and have to wait patiently for legal shooting light. As soon as the clock strikes, Beau pulls the trigger and ends his hunt 10 seconds into the season.
    Lucas and Randy continue to hunt the rest of the week. The next day they are able to locate and bull and try to get an opportunity for Lucas. They've got 3 elk tags to fill and several days to do it.

    I remember this hunt as a series on YT before it finally was able to make it to Amazon and now back in Amazon complete form. I am pretty sure this was the first episode that I remember watching that I was introduced to Beau Betty and those WTLlamas. Happy for him to fulfill his dream in the first 30 secs of shooting light on the first day of rifle in MT. I feel for Lucas, but always good to see someone committed to making sure they gave everything to find an injured animal. He too has that code, where he is only hunting that animal until there is a conclusion. Thanks for sharing.

    That shot at 24:48 was completely unethical. There was a cow bedded right behind that Bull. In fact, she was probably fragmented by your first missed shot. I know you guys want to make a show and there's tons of pressure to make the most of every opportunity. However, as hunter we are responsible for putting ethics first. This should be reconsidered with the Newberg team.

    • @bendrixbailey1430
      @bendrixbailey1430 4 года назад

      Say what you will about the shot. Remember that you are looking through the camera lens, not the rifle scope. That is often two very different sight pictures and you can’t know what Lucas was seeing. If you paid attention, he was having trouble locating the bull when the rest of us could see him in the lens and Beau could see him plainly in the spotting scope. Both the camera and the spotter were probably 24 inches higher off the ground than was the rifle scope. I’m not opposed to judging people’s actions, but rushing to judgement without all the information is why civilized people insist on courts and evidence rather than lynch mobs. Speaking of judging people, what I did see was Lucas and the crew putting in some serious effort tracking that wounded animal to conclusion. That takes heart. I also saw them pass on shooting another bull because they could not see evidence of a hit they were not certain (at that time) had been made. That takes restraint. So Tylerp2600, I do think you’re rushing to judgement and disparaging Lucas, and the “Newberg team” without the evidence to do so, and dismissing evidence to the contrary.

    As we all get a little older we realise it is not about the shot and the kill or the trophy. It is who we share it with and the experience. That experience can be from the mountains of North East Scotland to the rolling gentle South Downs of England and across the pond to the wonderful open spaces of the USA from Florida to Alaska. My bucket list includes a trip to Montana elk hunting. When this lockdown is over and done with, it is time to get back into shape and get on the hill

    Not sure if anyone noticed but looked like when he missed that bull he shot a cow elk right behind the bull! Hopefully Lucas learned from this elk trip. We have all been in his shoes when we were his age. In 1972 dad bought me a Weatherby Vangard with a Bushnel scope. Several years later while chasing Elk I was try to take an early morning shot into the back of an Elk on a slope almost looking into the morning sun. The optics just was not good enough to filter out the glare or our hunt was a bust. The next day Zeus’s scopes went on both of our rifles and that was the last of our problems. One thing we did buy when laser bore sightseers came out is we could check our rifles aim in hunting camp to make sure the scope did not lose it sights. I think Lucas took a poor shot. But if he had this bore slighter he might not have missed. It’s hard to believe a Leopold scope lost its aim. A great scope. I hope Beau is feeling better as well. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

    I obviously know that we are viewing this through a camera lens and not the rifle scope, but Lucas was laying prone directly beneath that camera. The position he was in puts him directly in line with the elk that we were viewing, just a little bit lower. At 24:49 he shoots at the bull with a bedded cow behind him. Even if he is slightly to the right of the camera, that cow was way too close and I believe that the shot shouldn't have been taken. I have slowed the video down and followed the vapor trail of the bullet and it appears that his shot was low and a little in front of the bulls hind legs (low right.) I dont typically like to speculate without further research and info, but I'm fairly certain that he may have accidentally hit that cow. Mistakes can happen, I just hope that this was investigated by the team to ensure that in the event that the cow was shot, the right thing was done.

      @@arttrumbo9496 If distance was measured, not guessed, and unless Lucas's rest slipped as he fired, the two most likely explanations are: Sight was off or he had no idea where bullet would impact at that distance. If either of those two, a second shot was not a good idea.

      @@EricRush my guess is the angle might have come into play as well. It looks like he is shooting well above him. I'm not sure exactly how that would affect his trajectory though. But if his spotter saw the impact of that first round (and it seemed like he did) it's reasonable to measure the impact from the desired target and call a quick correction. It looks more like he ballparked it though and gave the shooter a short correction which is really common.

    • @bendrixbailey1430
      @bendrixbailey1430 4 года назад +1

      It would have been interesting and worthwhile to include information about the reason for the low shots. I don’t think it was unethical to take the second shot. We’ve all pulled one in the heat of the moment. A breath, steady mind and a deliberate squeeze will often make the second shot right. I don’t think I’d let a spotter tell me where to hold. I’d range it again (its easy to mis a range, pick up an obstruction) and then hold steady on the target at the correct range. If the second shot was at the feet, I’d hang it up till the rifle was sighted in again. I’m not sure if that crew did take a check shot on their firearms once they got to camp and before going out, but they should, and Randy would be making yet another of many very good points by showing that. I think those guys did an admirable job of restraining themselves from shooting a third time, and of tracking that injured bull to conclusion.

    I think the first missed shot ( time stamp around 24:49) was low but perhaps hit the other elk in the HEAD! Jesus guys don’t shoot when there are elk BEHIND your target!!!!!

    Great hunt. We enjoyed watching it and dreaming of making a trip like that sometime in the future. How wonderful that you produce these movies for us to watch, dream and plan with. Thanks! I do have one question for Randy or Lucas. Did you go to the range afterward and discover the reason the shots were low? We all pull one sometimes, and I thought that’s what the first shot was, but the second shot was exactly where it should have been if the first shot was on point and steady. So, was the scope nocked? Was the rangefinder picking up a stray reflection? I think it would be worth adding that information to the end of the video. I’ve gone and added comments to all the disparaging comments below because I think Lucas does not deserve the judgements some folks laid out. Here’s what I saw, and I say hats off to those fellows and to Lucas for having the courage to share that disappointment with us so that we could understand hunting is not all about fist pumping, and how to deal with the tough blows like a man.
    Yes, there were cows. Elk are herd animals. There are always other elk. Nobody holds off because other elk are near. People do hold off when it clear there are other elk, or just blue sky, behind the target elk.

    Love your videos. Want to comment that that first miss on the bull was a shot with several elk right behind it and around it. It was very low and could have easily wounded another elk. I think you will agree it was not an ethical or good shot, and I feel this should have been addressed in the video. Thanks.

    Nobody notice the shot taken with the cow and calf directly behind the bull? Fortunately it was low but it's something everyone needs to be mindful of when shooting.

    Is it ok to shoot at an animal standing in front of a bedded animal? Couldn't you wound the animal behind or sitting under the animal... @ 25 mins?

    On the second hunt, did you guys go over to the other hunter to at least see where his shot hit? It looked like a perfect heart shot in the video, i dont understand unless it missed just low into brisket?

    • @thomasdenney6898
      @thomasdenney6898 4 года назад

      Yea, this, "we saw it was a leg hit," does not match the shot in the video. I watched it countless times, and it looks boiler room. The first shot might have tagged his lower leg, but the 2nd shot looks in the crease behind the shoulder. I guess the angle could affect things, but based on POI, that bull was not hit in the leg. Maybe the off leg. but on side... no not the leg. Big what if, but what if your bull was dead on the mountain and you couldn't find it, but the other hunter killed bull was the 2nd bull you spoke of. That seems more legitimate. The footage we see just does not match the story, and in 7 seasons, that is the first time that has happened.

    Was that guys rifle on? Last year in camp 2 guys dropped their rifles out of scabbards and missed shots at less then 200 yds. The mone guy also missed a shot at 400 yds. That's why I double check my zero every time I can.

      I'm not aware of a particular app that tracks shooting time. Where I hunt legal light starts 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset. I check these times each day when I go out.
