YOO! confirmed this worked great thanks. as someone in the comments said. 1/16th over the recommended 1/4 of an inch was perfect. missed the bulb sheild. I also was able to get my iron under the backside of the plate without removing those 2 screws and needle but I solder alot. great vid. -1986 honda shadow vt700c
Your repair worked well. The only thing I didn’t do was take the tach needle off and solder underneath. But the tach worked after I hooked it back up and I only burned my hand once. Lol.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I went through this process not really believing it would work so you can imagine my surprise when I fired up and voila, success. Part of the reason for my even attempting this repair is because of your thoughtful, methodical, clear, well-paced, well filmed instructions. Que Bueno. Muchisimas gracias.
Just a note for anybody doing this in the future: If you make a mark exactly 1/4 inch below the chrome, you will line up right on top of the temp gauge. You can afford another 1/16 of an inch of depth and miss it, or loosen the last screw on the back to make the gauge hang out of the way.
charles kelly I'm glad this video is helping so many people, including you. Thanks so much! I'm currently without a bike, but currently trying to change that for the summer. I have a Go-Pro I've been dying to test out. :P
No problem man! I hope it helped/helps you out. If you run into any other issues with your bike and it's similar to mine ('83 VT750C) shoot me a PM, I've had mine almost the entire way apart so at this point I'm pretty familiar with it.
Also since you have it apart lubricate the needle shaft. I did this but it kept sticking until I took it apart and lubed the shaft the needle is connected to.
Thanks for the guide. Little bit late to the party. I have the same bike and similar issue. My just got stuck at 3000rpm and did not work. I do have one question, is there a spring in there that pulls the needle towards 0 or no? I didn't put the tach on because i still want to check that part before i do. For some reason my needle was also stuck and it didn't move and there were visible broken solder points.
***** thanks, I'm glad the video helped! If you run into any other troubles with your bike and it's similar to my brother and I's feel free to shoot me a message anytime.
+Merril Creech yeah it should! I just sold a Magna that had the same issue, didn't get a chance to fix it before I sold it but sent the guy who purchased it this video so he could if he wanted to. They're all pretty much the same/similar in that year range.
What should I do about the temp gauge? I didn't notice it before I did this RPM repair ( and maybe it did or didn't I don't know), but as soon as I start it, the temp pegs max out to hot. Before bike is running even a minute. Since I already got it cut out and just have to remove some tape, should I soder the temp gauge?
If it were mine, I'd guess that I compromised the contacts on the temp gauge while messing with everything else and hit the contacts with some new solder. It can't hurt. Your situation kind of reminds me of my van, I didn't notice that my temp gauge didn't work until after I had repaired my fuel gauge. xD
Well, the temp gauge stayed in the shell. I'm thinking I should go back in at least see and make sure I didn't knock something loose. I'll let you know how it goes. I wasn't bitching, I was very impressed with this. But I plug one hole in the dam and another one starts leaking, lol.
Bwaha, trust me brother. I know. I rebuilt the engine on this bike twice to no avail (steel hardware threaded into aluminum=no bueno) and am currently looking for another bike after selling this one for parts. Money was tight and I was tired of aggravating with it. A word of advice, excellent torque wrenches and excellent head gaskets are king. Let me know if you get your gauge working, I'm curious to see what you find!
Will do. Hell, I might sell you mine when I'm done. Doesn't need much. I have the passenger seat sent off now to a local reupholster. Temp gauge now. And I'm waiting on a vac pump so I can bleed clutch. After that should run like a top. '84 shadow VT700, 26K miles.
***** I removed the thermostat and filled it with new coolant. That didn't help. I took the gauge completely apart. Inspected it. Nothing appeared damaged or wrong. Put it back together and the RPM AND the temp gauge works beautifully. Go figure.
Umm, I'm going to give this a shot...maybe? What my VT750 84 Shadows Tach is doing is it's working...then a minute later maybe works...then it falls to near zero and if I throttle it the needle springs back to life? Wonky as hell! Also I have NO temp guage...hmmmm guess this is sounding like either 2 evils...try yours or try a new unit?
@@weatherweary68 Yea you pretty much self guided the steps I should be blindfolded lol! Yea I'll tweak that out shortly...will let ya know! Thanks eh for this and the chat!
@@weatherweary68 Okay this successfully brought back my RPM's so yay to that! What it didn't do was bring back the temperature gauge albeit I didn't solder those last 2 connections underneath dammit!

@Lockie Owens thank you for the kind words! I'm glad it helped you!

I watched your video twice and went out to the shed and did it, and now my RPM gauge works beautifully! Thank you, sir.

THIS TOTALLY FIXED MY TACH! Thank you so much!
(FYI)I have a 1984 honda shadow vt700
Thank you for posting this, I'm about to pick up some solder and try this on my Shadow. Hopefully I get the same results!
Great fix man! Thanks for posting!

Thnx for the video! great job. Because of this vid I fixed mine :) (shadow 700 1984)
+woosh shaaa awesome :D Glad it helped and that you got it fixed.

Great vid. This is what I needed.
Nice job . Congratulations and thanks for the help

How is the tape holding out after all this time?
Is there an aftermarket replacement?
nice work thanks for the info..
No problem, hope it helped!
Would you recommend doing this as mine completely stopped working.
if the tach doesn't work im assuming that the temp guage is also not working?
***** thanks, I'm glad the video helped! If you run into any other troubles with your bike and it's similar to my brother and I's feel free to shoot me a message anytime.
would this also work on a 1984 honda shadow vt500??

I watched this to fix on on a honda super four, I ended up just wiping the CB with isopropyl and it fixed it, luckily. Might be of use to someone...
Oke, gotta do this in the weekend somehow with my honda shadow VT500c
cool video.
Thanks man!

Sounds like what mine was doing. It’s so easy to do that it’s worth a shot. If it doesn’t work buy a new one! Good luck.
