I love fly fishing. Makes it twice as satisfying to catch a fish on a bait you tied yourself. The biggest advantage flies have is a gentle presentation, but casting gear is far more accurate. I have more fun fly fishing. That's what matters to me.
I catch most of my bass on fly rods. Have been fishing pressure lakes that see flukes, plastic worms, crankbaits, jerbaits, etc. They will nail a fly. I have had luck with something called a dumb bunny streamer. It is just dumbbell eyes and rabbit fur. Can make it in about a ton of different colors and weights. Caught a 9 1/2 pounder on it.
I'm with you. It's been about a year since I started doing about 90% fly fishing only on all species I target. Bass, carp, gill, rainbows, speckled trout, gar, and a few reds. I get them on everything from divers, clousners, mice, to dragonflies. I love it but it gets expensive quick. Tight loops!
Rudy Ruiz caught my first bass yesterday on Float and Fish method, with my 5 wt Redington Predator! With winter coming I’m hoping this method is the key to cold weather bassin. I start a 3 month Kayak Tourney December 1; only using my fly rod, going head to head with all the conventional guys!
@@jeffcollins1172 That tourney sounds terrific. I think you'll do fine numbers wise and I still like the odds of you getting a few big ones too. I prefer a 6 or 8 wt to help with the big flies and wind for bass. I'd honestly like to know how you do. Please let us know! I usually don't bass fish much in the winter (in Texas) but this year I will be fishing all 12 months. Good luck.
Excellent video dude! Its really exciting catching fish on the fly, would like to see more videos of fly fishing for bass, its pretty rare to see anyone fly fishing at the lake I fish at, and its super pressured so I'm hoping the fly can trick them a little better. been catching a lot of blue gill and crappie on the fly out here in so cal. Great content btw!
You've gotta fish that fly all the way to the boat! Gotta vary your retrieve as well. Fluke won because you've got more experience with it for sure. Fun video!
You're so right on the fly. Not to get Fly Fisherman poetic, but it really is just a different experience. Not better, not worse, just different, and my personal preference, but if that doesn't work, then onto normal gear.
strip set. use loop knot for streamer. vary retrieve. Also, your leader looked quite short. Not sure how clear the water was. Like the video concept. Hopefully you keep improving so it'll be a fair fight xD
I fly fish 90% of the time I used to be a huge bass fisherman and I switched over to the fly and I fly fish for trout just got in the flyfishing for bass and I love it and I love to see other people do it
Phenomenal fly caught fish! Wow! I dabbled with a fly rod but my best catch ever was like almost a pound bluegill. It was super fun I’ll tell you that! Back to your video! Lol
Awesome video man. I have become obsessed with fly fishing ever since I caught my first fish on a fly rod. I enjoy trout fishing the most but in the summer bass and ponds are a LOT close to home so im trying to get into bass fly fishing!
I fish baitcasters and fly rod for bass and I enjoy fishing the fly much more. The only things I like better about the bait caster is it doesn't take as much work and you can get alot more distance.
By no means am i an expert at Fly Fishing, especially for bass, but you shouldve let him take the line outside of the reel out, then get bring him in on the reel. Its still awesome watching you catch that tank, just a little tip from someone a bit more experienced.
Thanks for the advice! I still have plenty to learn about when it comes to fly fishing so any tips help. Glad you still enjoyed the video tho! Do you ever fly fish for bass?
Hey Fletcher, I know you’re from North Carolina, but if you ever make a trip into the Central Valley in California I’ve got some nice bass fly fishing spots I’d love to share with you.
Depends on the size of the popper or steamer. If you feel like you’re having a hard time getting the line to lay out straight then there’s a good chance that the line is to small for that fly b/c it can’t carry the energy all the way to the fly and you probably want to go up in size. Also in the opposite spectrum if you’re snapping off flies the line is to heavy and carrying to much energy to the fly causing it to snap off
@@joshuavanscoyk9404 a 10# 7.5' tapered or home made 3-step down hand tied leader would work fine....they also make a bass taper #5 line for panfish poppers and its called the "Warm Water" line by Orvis there are other brands that also make these types of line tapers look for "short aggressive tapers" on the description of the fly lines as well as species description/ what type of baits its designed to throw...you dont want a "trout" taper or a double taper...if you move up to an #8 rod/ and line you have better luck, you can even use saltwater lines like the Orvis "All-round SW line" for bass and pike, also Cortland makes great lines, their "Streamer" series are great.
Make sure u strip set on bass u lost 2 that u saw eat it right when u see em eat it strip set and if it yanks it out of its mouth chances are they’ll try to eat it again cause it feels like a bait fish trying to get away
Honestly man, what's hurting you most with the fly rod is the false cast. Slapping the water when gauging your distance and pulling up without taking most of the line off of the water makes a lot of noise and will spook fish, especially during the daylight hours in clear water.
@@Fletcher_The_Fisherman also, love the video man. In getting into bass fishing on fly rod. I fish the Missouri creeks here locally in Southwest Missouri. Cant wait to start hitting them with the wet flys this season.
Thanks man! People seem to be liking the bass fly fishing videos so I’ll probably do another one next week. That’s awesome that you’re getting into it tho! It’s a ton of fun and I wish you nothing but the best of luck👊🏼 let me know how you do!
@@Fletcher_The_Fisherman also when you were lamenting about the action of your streamer, you can jerk the tip of your rod to the left or the right before you make a strip to imitate lateral darting action.
Jackie Daugherty I would like to say that I never use an indicator for the streamers, but I use them on nymphs and wet flies, I would probably use a splitshot weight to get it deeper, I think the bass were deeper, as Tom Rosembauer would say "sometimes you gotta go deep for bass"

I love fly fishing for bass, especially from a kayak!
I haven't tried it from a yak yet but that's definitely something I need to try!

Dang that’s wild! I bet that was one wild fight on the fly! I’ll have to look into that streamer
Zeroed in with Zeke I use the dumb bunny also, great fly. Kind of a cross between a Bunny Leech and Clouser

I totally agree! A baitcaster is just a perfectly design tool to be as efficient as possible and fly fishing is more of an art form
Both are useful in certain situations
Big facts, there is a place for both in my arsenal
I dig both!!
Awesome video 👍
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it!
Gotta strip set on the fly rod if you want to hook a fish.
workin' on it lol
Nope

I have in the past. I've been meaning to re-stock up on different types for a while now.
No time like the present, you should give it a go this weekend!
But that’s not what you’re supposed too do with bass. Maybe trout but not bass. Coming from an experienced fly angler.
Hey, I was wondering what wt is that fly rod?
5 wt! But I probably should be using a 7 wt or a 8 wt for bigger bass flies
What kinda boat is that? Think looks great!
Twin Troller x10, I made a video on it if you want to check it out!
I use flies and streamers on my baitcaster with a small bullet weight. I've had alot of success for bass
Interesting.... I may have to try that for a vid

Those bass have been attacked. The second one was probably a turtle
Maybe but it would have been a long time ago. There weren’t any visible scars. I really think they just had a birth defect

Lived all my life in Montana we're fly fishing is a religion hahaha
That it is hahah I’ve been itching to get out west during the summer to fly fish, I’ve only ever been to ski lol

no but I used one when I went trout fishing recently

Much appreciated🙏🏻 he needs all the support he can get
Little late to the party but I just woke up and when the alarm went off I started to question my reality
I can literally hear how dirty your fly line is.
yikes hahaha yeah it was pretty nasty but it's all clean now lol
Your fly casting struggles because your left hand is too close to the rod. Learn to single haul then double haul.
