- Took an afternoon to just fish with my son and document some bass fishing. We just love getting on the lake together and casting flies for bass, crappie, bluegill, and anything else that pops up. It builds great casting prowess working the reeds.

He loves Bass fishing, he's a good fly fisherman but really good with a baitcaster. He trades off every other trip haha.

Blue is my go-to color when dragon flies are out. Poppers and slider both. I don’t know why, but I fly fish for Bass a LOT and blue is by far the most consistent producer for surface flies. And along reed lines, absolutely recommend using large poppers…. I’ve let them sit thirty seconds or longer before twitching the fly with great results.
A variation of a Zoo Cougar though is my go-to pattern. A little more deer hair for the head, add some rubber legs, and you are good to go for surface/diving for Bass.
Excellent advice, especially about the long pause before the twitch. I'll have to start doing that if I can have the patience! LOL!

Great video and tips! The section with the reeds looks a whole lot like out Fla. lakes. I’ve always used hair bugs and poppers, mice pattern’s, etc., but never thought about dragonflies! I need to buy or tie a few and try them out. Great idea, thanks!

That's a good question, RIO flies Patrick Kilby ties this pattern. It's weighted to make it float and balance like a frog. Super cool pattern.
@6:28, that’s a badass cast right there, that skip cast. I wish I knew how to do that. I’ve seen your other video on that particular cast but I haven’t succeeded in performing it correctly.
Thank you for the props, that cast is a bit of an enigma for many folks. It requires that you keep the tip high and move it in a concaved stroke so the tip actually ends and stops higher than it is in the middle. This probably makes no sense but just try casting straight overhand and dipping your rod tip slightly in the middle of the stroke.
