thank you so much for ur comment!!!! yeah i try not to clickbait or fearmonger i just think it is so dishonest... definitely makes making the videos a longer process though so I REALLY APPRECIATE U NOTICING!!! Sometimes when the bad videos get so many views I am like "darn why am I even trying" lol so I appreciate that you appreciate my quality :)
omg!! of course. Please let me know if there is anything specific you want. My next video will be going over the notes I got on my own admissions file with some actionable items for applying to college this year. But after that I am still brainstorming. Let me know if you want anything in particular!
is it just me, or does this look like a college admissions conspiracy theory map? with all of these notes, I feel like I need some red string to connect the dots and crack the Da Vinci Code! great video!!
You explain this so well. I agree with everything. Love the way the colors and scribbles ended up in such a masterpiece at the end 😜 (this was helpful, thank you for making this video)
ofc!!! thank u for ur comment love ur pro pic :) I just really hate watching videos that aren't heplful so I try to make mine to the point as well ha ha
My daughter is at Stanford. Advice: prepare your essays yourself, without outside help. No one saw my daughter's essays except herself. I'm sure that gave them a freshness and authenticity that was awarded in an admissions offer. Good luck!
No peer reviews? No looking at tips, no asking your teachers what they think of your essay?? That seems like a bad idea. Yes, be authentic. But also know what they're looking for. And also get others' opinions on your writing. It's good practice. Probably a good idea to write the draft yourself. But you should still get outside opinions.
Omg thank u so much…. Obviously i love comments regarding the content of my channel but given i think i am very funny i do appreciate that my personality has been given some attention here…….. thank uuuuuuu :) :) :)
Great video! I trust channels like this bc bigger channels just yap at a certain point just to retain viewership which in turn gets them money. a quick question I have is can you release a video on how to write the "why us" essays for like certain colleges and more specifically, how to research the schools you want to get into in depth, like what links do you use to research, how do you get urself into that rabbit hole of exploring that college, etc instead of just writing abt info from the college's front page/website which is a generic and boring way of answering "why us"
omg thank you!!! yeah i have noticed that issue... all the videos open with "THIS WILL CHANGE EVERYTHING" and then they are like "20 years ago when I was a finance major at Oxford I met a guy...." bla bla bla. My goal is to never be like that!! It is just dishonest to everyone, and also, as a tutor, a huge waste of my time. Don't get me wrong, I love to yap, but if it is not helpful information to my students/viewers I'd rather be taking a nap! Thank you SM for the video suggestion I am adding that to my queue of videos to film. I think that is one of the more difficult essays to write... i'll do my best to make a good video in it :) thanks again for the comment
for me, im planning to write the why us based on specific extracurriculars they offer related to things im passionate about. im also writing about their marching bands cause i do band in hs but thats just me 🤷♀️
Girl yes I love JYP he is literally so ICONIC! Like I honestly admire his determination and the fact that he doesn't let people's opinions bother him like I aspire to be this level of unbothered.
thank you!! honestly 1500 is really good especially on one test day; if you take again your superscore could be really high. 1500 is also high enough to be considered even with the 25 percentile issue. can also apply ED somewhere to help compensate. good luck!!
@@CollegeChingu thank you! this is rlly helpful to know! Yea, I actually originally got a 1080 on the psat so im proud of it, do u think theres a way to discuss that on the common app? or if its in any way helpful to colleges? i dont mind retaking, im studying right now! :)
bruh so that's why i got rejected (i applied last year)😭thank you so much for sharing this info because i was really disappointed in myself. i think that's actually insane the large state schools just cut people off after a certain date regardless of the strength of their app.
I really enjoy watching your videos and find your advice inspiring. I'm an upcoming senior in high school, and I could really use some guidance. I've been feeling discouraged and frustrated lately because I’ve moved schools a lot, which has made it tough to maintain consistent grades and build strong connections. , I’ve worked hard to keep a 3.6 GPA with mostly A's, but I did receive two C's in 9th grade and one in my junior year. I’ve been involved in many clubs, but because I was always the new student, I never had the chance to take on leadership roles. On top of that, I don’t have the strongest support system. I'm trying to stay positive and keep pushing forward, but it’s been difficult. I’d love to hear any advice you might have on how to stay motivated and make the most of my situation as I prepare for college. Thank you so much for your time and everything you do!
thank u for the kind words! mention in your "additional info" section that you moved around a lot and that prevented leadership rolls, etc. you still have time between now and app submission to work on your ECs tbh so don't stop working yet! 3.6 GPA may seem low for some schools but that is totally within range for a lot of good targets. apply early to a target/reach you really want.
@@BPrashantMehto watch my video "How to create a spike as an average student" that is definitely the most helpful for this specifically (on my channel!)
@@CollegeChingu hey I've a question. Pls reply. As a international student my high school doesn't provide APs and APs exam are so costly for us. So I didn't give any AP. I've average high school score but have 1600 SAT with great ec including international work, internship, successful startup and Club founders etc. What's your thoughts and tips?
Holy crap, you made me chuckle at the diversity shpeal with the trauma dump and how one should talk about their mental issues due to adversity from diversity through therapy, I think a bit more so coming from someone who is gay. 🤣 This is a very insightful perspective to the college admissions process that I wish I heard when I was applying, so I wouldn’t have overdone victim blaming from reality. It’s honest and enlightening that one should focus on growth from adversity. I’ll be sharing this to family who’ll be fortunate to hear your thoughts and advice about all this. 💙
Hi omg i am so sorry i never replied but i read ur comment immediately and really appreciated it. Thank u sm for sharing me!! And yes i agree… luckily i didnt dump too much in my own applications but it can be a fine line to walk… on the one hand, it is hard to say we are grateful for discrimination/strife, but on the other, we cannot just complain…. Which is why advanced processing of our pasts can come in therapy but right now we can just focus on the positives LOL. TYSM again for ur comment :)
I never thought about JYP as the embodiment of entertainment… I mean I suppose it is true he really goes for it without shame😭 I wouldn’t say I love him though he gives icky vibes but maybe I am just being prejudiced loll
no he gives me that vibe as well I cant lie I just try to get over it and enjoy him anyway bc he is so crazy and i cant help but laugh whenever i see him do ANYTHING
pls read my other comments re diversity and also the content in the video... i have literally had students write about diversity from the perspective of liking fantasy novels make really compelling cases about their commitment to intellectual diversity. Diversity isn't just about race or sexuality; it is about mindset!
My daughter is at Stanford. Write your own essay!!! Don't let someone else either write it for you, or heavily influence you. They see right through that.
omg!!! thank u for watching it!! Also r u a yuzuru hanyu fan... from ur username........ i rly love him....... may or may not have a little statue of him on my desk rn!!!!
Wow this is really interesting. But also glad I didn't watch this BEFORE my son applied for college just because it would have made me more nervous. A few interesting things. He got into his top choice/fairly competitive university early decision. He is the whitest. straightest, conservative, catholic kid you could ever find. I worried about diversity. A few things that worked to his advantage. We are low income. He was homeschooled k-12...which meant he is definitely weird, but covid had absolutely no impact on him. He is very well adjusted and well rounded. He has had adversity due to some serious medical challenges. I would have said his essays were the weakest part of his application, but 1. he was honest about his Catholic faith and that was the bulk of his community involvement 2. His innocence and non jaded, not sophisticated tone I think worked to his advantage. The school was still test optional, but he submitted SAT scores because he was homeschooled and standardized tests were the most verifiable thing he had to offer. The biggest thing I can offer other kids. Show as much interest as possible in your top schools. Go to events, post to their social media, do their summer programs, contact your admissions counselor, etc etc.Just thought I would share our experience. Your info definitely jives with out experience.
I really wanted to get into an Ivy League school without submitting my SAT but now I know that I won’t get into any of them because my SAT score is really low and I can’t fix it in time(not like it would’ve gotten better anyways because I suck at taking test)😕
From College to Life and Its Lessons 1st Lesson - You have to learn to write in English! - It is impossible to enter a system without knowing its native language, so we will exercise all of this during this new year. - Golden Phrase: The weight of the pen will always be lighter than the weight of the hoe (in other words, your best opportunities will arise from writing). Main Objectives of an Essay - It will be the human part of the application where you can show who you really are with your story and identity. - A unique opportunity to reveal your personality. - And it is certainly a stage that comprises several other parts of the process, such as Tests. 2nd Lesson - Self-knowledge counts a lot here, because it is impossible to apply to a very cool university without showing or selling yourself. - Analyze how you think, why you think this way, understand your feelings, who you are; this is certainly the most important part. Going Deep into Each of the Common App Themes Note: Remember that the Common App Essay must be between 250 - 650 words. 1. Background - What to say? - Here you can tell your greatest experiences, a training that came into your life, talk about the education of your country, discuss ethnicities and races, or even talk about your extracurricular activities (just be careful not to turn this part into a resume). - Ideas for you! - Hobbies, winning a 100% scholarship or any percentage at your school, about passions, family, sports, places/foods that marked you. 2. Failure Note: Be careful! Try to focus on your process of overcoming, not on the failure itself, leaving your text very heavy. - What to say? - Report a problem that has arisen in your life or even a difficulty you went through. Remember to show how you overcame it. - What would Lucas do? - He would think about reporting the problem because it is easier to work on, and he would also pay attention to avoid clichés. 3. Belief Note: Only use this topic if you have excellent command of arguments. - What to say? - If you consider yourself a very "thoughtful" person, this theme is good, and if you have something you want to change in the world, this is your time. - What would Lucas do? - He would have talked about his experience with self-help books that really changed his life, and would never talk about religion or politics because it might sound bad to the person reading your Essay. 4. Challenge - What to say? - You can think of a problem that can range from "discovering the cure for cancer" to "a project to help improve your neighborhood," but it must have a profound impact on you and don't forget to question yourself about the WHY? - Some Ideas! - Building a soccer field for the people on your street, helping NGO people spread their work on social media, creating a recycling campaign for the people in your condo or school, etc. 5. Achievement (This is what Lucas chose!) - What to say? - Bring that "Aha" moment, that is, make your reader fully engage with different details that make them discover a new idea (this really needs to be in your text regardless of the theme), and you can still work on personal growth by telling about a transformation you had and showing it in your Essay. - What did Lucas write? - His Essay was based on the 30 minutes before the game started, and he used the art of storytelling through a book called Storynomics, which he mentioned in our class. 6. Interest - What to say? - Describe something that is a great passion for you! - Three things Lucas loves to see in Essays - Perspective, Butterfly Effect, and Memories (it can be about family that involves you). Other - What to say? - This is a last resort, try to reflect on what didn't fit into any of the other categories and write about it. - Negative Point - This can sound bad because it seems like you lack creativity and are using this as a last resort, so only do this as a last resort. Step-by-Step Method that Lucas Passes to His Mentees - The first step is to revisit the mentee's history. - The second is to write down words or phrases that describe questions involving your childhood, relationships with your parents, who your parents are, when you appear in the story, and so on. - Finally, after writing all this, try to connect how this ties into your Essay and try to match yourself with your college. Your Best Friends Inspiration - The best way to write a successful Essay is by getting inspired by essays that have already worked, so read a lot (I will leave the link to some of them for you to read): - [Essays That Worked - Johns Hopkins University](apply.jhu.edu/apply/essays-that-worked/) - [Past Essays - Tufts University](admissions.tufts.edu/apply/advice/past-essays/) - [The Choice Blog - The New York Times](thechoice.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/12/06/today-essay/?_r=0) - [Four College Essays That Stand Out - The New York Times](www.nytimes.com/2013/05/18/your-money/four-college-essays-that-stand-out-from-the-crowd.html) - [These Personal Essays Will Get You Into Stanford - Gawker](gawker.com/these-personal-essays-will-get-you-into-stanford-479621420) Imagery - Imagery is nothing less than making your reader feel like they are in your place within your story, so tell specific details that make them enter your world. - Make your feelings their feelings. Marketing - The goal here is simply to turn seconds into minutes, which means making the beginning of your story the starting point to engage your reader throughout your entire text. - Your essay is like a client; people will only like it if they can identify with something they have experienced at some point in their life. 3-4 Most Important Sentences in Your Essay - 3rd - last sentence of the first paragraph. - 2nd - first sentence of the essay. - 1st - last sentence of the essay. Storytelling (put a star here) - It is impossible to create a story without conflict, that is, without an argument to convince someone that you have great value. - So work a lot on the loop, this refreshes the reader's memory about your story and also becomes very strong in your Essay because it shows that it has a beginning, middle, and end. Outlining (Model) Outlining - is a way to develop a line of thought (pre-draft) Metaphor: xxxx Introduction: - Idea 1 - Idea 2 - Conclusion Development: - Idea 1 - Idea 2 - Idea 3 Conclusion: - Idea 1 - Idea 2 Summarizing in 5 Steps - STEP 0 - INSPIRATION & BRAINSTORM - Review your entire life. - Images, documents, photos, talk to family... - STEP 1 - REPERTOIRE - Write 5 to 10 stories of your life (in Portuguese) without stopping on several sheets. - Have a repertoire and ideas by writing a lot (it can be in Portuguese) about the important themes for you. - Be it significant times in your history, transitions, failures, achievements, background, interests, passions... have about 3-5 giant essays to have a base. - STEP 2 - VALUES - Find your characteristics present in all the stories. - STEP 3 - INSPIRATION - Read many essays and study the writing process and structure in English. - You need to learn how to write in English. - READ DOZENS OF SUCCESSFUL ESSAYS. - STEP 4 - MATCH - Match the themes of the essays with some of your stories. - STEP 5 - OUTLINE I hope this helps!
I just came across your channel and it’s the first time I’ve heard someone say to just pick whichever test you’re better at, I’ve always been told having both is better. Will it be less advantageous to have one good score or to have one good score AND another decent score that’s not quite as good? (For reference, my SAT superscore is 1490 and ACT is 30, where the SAT is the good one and the ACT is the meh one)
That SAT score is significant better. IDK who is going around telling people to take both. Did another college RUclipsr tell you that? Honestly that is such insane advice. I would only submit the SAT score. They don’t:t want to see both.
@@CollegeChingu I think that advice was moreso given with the idea that my SAT and ACT would be more or less the same, so having both would be more “solid,” but then that just didn’t happen lol. And thank you! 😊
I’m kinda of between things I should write about in my essay. I want to write about being involved in your faith and real staying true to it is controversial at my school. And I mean it literally is. It may sound ironic but people would literally pester me about my faith. And instead of letting this discourage me I’ve decided to start a Youth for Christ club at my school! Any thoughts about this? Sorry if this is a little over the place
That sounds really cool! Just make sure to focus on what you DID rather than the pushback you faced. It should be an essay about YOUR TRIUMPH rather than focusing on their bullying of you!
Do I understand correctly that gpa and tests are the most significant parts in application? Even for art related fields? I imagine the order of priorities like: 1. GPA/sat (if required) 2. Letters of recommendation 3. Portfolio (for art majors) 4. Extracurriculars and awards Is it correct?
THIS IS SO SPECIFIC AND ACCURATE THANK YOU FOR GIVING VOICE TO HOW I FEEL ABOUT HIM LMFAO YOU ARE LITERALLY SO RIGHT... thinking about his sweet dreams are made of this performance.... you are so right...... oh my god... hauntingly accurate
so does everyone else. im going to make a video soon about how to keep your head above the water during this time. do your best to take advantage of weekends to do college work and just remember at the end of the day you can always transfer OR just be happy at a safety
hi! a junior here. we are currently looking for a college counselor and i loved your tips in this video. are you good to share any socials so me and my mom could email you about possibly setting up a meeting? thanks again!! there are not many affordable cc’s in my state unfortunately
Of course! Collegechinguadmissions@gmail.com. I offer discounts for repeat clients but you can get a general sense of my prices on my website (should be linked in the description). Hope to hear from you!
This is so helpful, I really do appreciate it. New sub! I will be sure to watch you over these next few months I really learn from your style 😊 I am just super scared because I want a fighting chance at top schools and I dont want the reason for me being filtered out being my SAT (1500 on my third attempt). I dont have any more available SAT’s or ACTs near my place in the near future so I really am stuck with this test score, which is obviously below the 25th percentile for the top schools I am applying to. I dont trust schools that are still “test-optional” either but thats a different story haha.
hey! 1500 is really good. If you don't get in somewhere, it isn't because you have a 1500. Apply with confidence. you can also check the common data set for your target schools and see how heavily they weight SAT versus GPA. I am glad you find my style/videos useful :) thank you for the support and good luck this year!

@@CollegeChingu tysm for the reply and wishes. I appreciate the encouraging words 😄. Keep doin watchu doin, its awesome stuff.
And one more question My school never had weighted GPA. Is it gonna put me in disadvantage? My school also never had AP classes or honor classes z I'm an international student, although there are some advanced classes
Great Video! Quick Question: where do I show I am low income? I'm not first gen, and I see where you can select that, but does the fee waiver let them know?
Heyy I loved this video! I know you mentioned that its ok not to have huge leadership positions but how exactly would we get around that? Should we mention something else instead? Also did we have any winners from last weeks giveaway? I was wondering who your bias was! (JYP is actually hilarious, although I don't know if I could say I love him with a straight face)
Thank u so much for ur comment!! If you dont have leadership I would just talk about the responsibilities you had within the club… be specific about what you did, for how long, and how many people you worked with. For example, if you were a shooter in the archery club but not the president, perhaps you coordinated pickups for practices or matches as well as helped organize team events! And NO WINNER YET since i thought maybe id get more comments/traffic on that video after this one, so i will reveal the winner in the next video :) I forget if you entered on my last video? If not you can still enter just tell me here!! And if you did don’t worry I wrote down everyone’s guesses I just dont have them in front of me like right now haha. Thanks again for the comment :)
Wasn't the ban on affirmative action supposed to start in the 2026 admission cycle? Idk maybe I missed smth (I'm also not in the US so this isn't really spoken about in my environment), but when I open the commonapp, the questions that seem to be affirmative-action-related are definitely still there Otherwise, loved the video, thank you so much!!
what? That was just an example of something someone could write about. Everyone is diverse in their own way... I have seen the straightest whitest men writing incredibly compelling diversity essays on how and why they think differently.
For the diversity statement part, would that be something we would write somewhere on our application or would that be something we would have to incorporate into our essays?
Typically that is gonna be a prompt for the supplementals. If there isnt one and you really want to say something you can work it in to one of the supplementals that isnt exactly about that but is kind of about it, if that makes sense.
Just do your best on SAT/ACT and be careful to the schools you apply to with that score if it isn't great. I am grateful that SAT/ACT means more though know because so many bums with inflated gpas get in by being "test optional" when they get below a 1450 on the SAT which is just embarrassing. I don't understands how people have A's in honors math classes but then they cant even get a 750 on the math portion of the SAT which is just piss easy. At the end of the day its just fucking luck, especially for applicants who are middle class cuz ur not broke enough to get an advantage and not rich enough to nepo. And if ur asian its even worse cuz if you express anything asian about you then its way harder for you to get in, they still find loopholes to bring race into it. However, if you are asian I wouldn't recommend hiding that part of your identity just to try and get into college because how hard you work matters more than the college you go to. You might not get into the top colleges that you deserve because of DEI acceptances but in the end if you work hard you will go far no matter what.
this is a great video!! thank you for informing us of this issue 💕 now we just gotta pray to get into college at all chat 🙏 also, if someone could review my stats, please lmk if I have any chance of getting into a hard school 😭 - gpa: unweighted = 3.77, weighted = 4.2 - ap classes: ap lang. junior year (a+ and a 4 on the ap exam), ap psych. this upcoming year - grades: straight a's junior year, one b+ sophomore year, one b+ freshman year - honors classes: all subjects possible except for math (but doing calc. senior year) - activities: show choir (2 groups, one for 4 years, one for 3 years, spirit leader junior year for 4 year group, vp for this upcoming year for 4 year group, received spirit award sophomore year), music honor society (was treasurer junior year), orchestra assistant (sophomore year), multiple plays + musicals, formerly played violin (3rd - freshman year) - summer: camp counselor for many years, babysitting (recent) - awards: spirit award (show choir, mentioned earlier), excellence in theatre (sophomore year), excellence in psychology (junior year)
stop REALLY?! omg. IDK if I have ever gotten that many likes on a video!! You may be the highest liker on my channel ever!!! TYSM for the comment omg im gonna go party
Great video🎉🎉🎉 Iʼve question. I donʼt really understand first-gen. And If my parents have bachelor degree, does this reason lower probability of getting FUll-Ride scholarship ?
If your parents went to college you are not first gen. If they didn’t, then you are! It sounds like you aren’t. It isn’t a problem at all! It is a factor they consider that can affect your admissions chances BUT that is typically separate from scholarship. dont be concerned with that. Good luck!
Thank you for this! Also quick question : are colleges really looking for Ib/Ap credit? What if student decided to quit IB to attended a fully funded scholarship to study abroad for senior year? Would colleges view that negatively?
No especially not if you can weave that into your narrative- why you are studying there, why you got the award, etc. Of course if the rigor of the coursework is significantly lower that is something to consider. But overall that sounds like a great opportunity that could help you stand out if you play your cards right !
I'm from Bangladesh. I don't know much about top-class-university application deadline. Can somebody fill me in with the information?( mostly, about the U.S universities) And I've taken my first demo SAT test on the bluebook app today( just to know where i'm starting from.) I got 1430 on that test. So, based on this how much time do i need to prepare myself fully for the SAT?
Up until late into my freshman year of High school, I was first gen. My dad got a degree that year online after loosing his job (2021) and my mom doesn’t have a degree. Is there a part of the application that I can share this, or does it not really matter since I’m not considered first gen anymore?
I looked it up and the 25th percentile score at Harvard is 1470. I currently have a 1370 superscore and I think I can get to 1450 by committing a large fraction of what free time I have by December. Is that enough for Harvard or should I try for something more ?
Rising Soph here, Would i be considered first gen if my parents both went to college In Korea? FYI, mother went to an arts school while father law school.
@@CollegeChingu sorry, i misunderstood, anyways thanks for the amazing video, the sat part really helped, btw do you have any advice for international students ? i’m from france and i heard it’s even more competitive for international students
For the point about emotional/social intelligence, I imagine that you shouldn't explicitly discuss the pandemic right (and instead you should indirectly show these attributes)? I feel like this topic would have gotten pretty repetitive/boring for AOs over the past 3 years.
probably very important.... they'll definitely be used to help shrink the amount of files/essays the officers have to sift through after last years issues!!!
unfortunately no, but you should mention that in your "additional info" section (if one parent doesnt have a degree but the other does, but from outside the US, it means you don't have an established connection with the US secondary education system. so they would want to know that) or describe in an essay somewhere
@@KaleabZeru you can find cheaper essay reviews on fiverr! I can't speak to their quality but I would start there :) I do have a list of students I hope to review their essays for free I can add you to it but no i cannot guarantee you will be selected
Hi! Thank you for this video it was super informative but I have a question about submitting test scores. My top school is UMich and I’m considering applying ED, but my test scores are a few under their 25th percentile. If I don’t submit scores at all is it really going to hurt my application?
Hey. Thanks for the amazing video. Do you think it will be a disadvantage to apply test optional to Harvard (I did the IB and I cant really afford to take a standardized test)?
unless your GPA is really high and your school has a good relationship w harvard then yes it would be a disadvantage. look into applying for a fee waiver!
@@CollegeChingu Hey. thanks for answering! My GPA is def high enough but I am an international (thus, no fee waivers unfortunately). And my school has only sent one person to Harvard every few years or so. Does that count as a good relationship?
@@ceydasun that is a tricky one honestly... it will be hard to get in without an SAT score, but of course if you have something really strong going for you, given your situation, there would be flexibility in considering you.
Do you know if test scores will also be mandatory for the college transfer process this year? I’m thinking about transferring for fall 2025 but I’m unsure if I should consider taking the SAT again.
most likely will be mandatory :/ depends on the school OFC but lots of top schools are moving towards requiring it..... check the freshman entry requirements for schools youre interested in to try to guess
mm that is probably not a convincing one: think more experiential (what do you bring to the table that no one else does?) doesnt need to be about race or gender: a lot of students choose to right about experiences they had as a child, unique personality traits, etc
@@CollegeChingu thanks a lot for replying, do i have any chance if i have good ECs but like a 8 maybe 9 out of 10 for grades' average (we dont have gpa here its out of 10)
With regard to the pandemic impact section (part 3) where you emphasize the importance of highlighting either leadership or community to these competitive colleges, should we make either of those (or both) an integral part of the common app personal statement as well as the UC PIQs? Also, is there a specific location for where this information was acquired? Thank you so much for your videos, the advice is very helpful as a current rising senior going through college apps, I also love your personality that shines through your videos :))
Leadership and community should almost always be highlighted in any application portfolio! You can choose to do so through your personal statement or supplementals. Typically I would recommend supplementals so you can focus your personal statement more on your own narrative (but if leadership is a part of that then that is good!) A lot of these are my predictions; the specific part about the pandemic impact was acquired through speaking with a few professors I know at various schools who have cited that they are concerned with the ability of students to engage in a community setting post-covid... the final admission committee is composed of both admit officers and professors, so their perspective is weighted there! You can also check all of this by googling "Common Data Set + School Name" for any specific school to see what they value-- most list leadership and ECs as high. But not all! And OMG Thank you for ur comments re my channel and my personality... sometimes I worry I am getting too off topic or too like flamboyant so i am happy you appreciate it :) :) also i like ur propic i love that series!
@@CollegeChingu Thank you so much for the helpful advice!! That's very interesting that professors also have a say in decisions, and that AOs are taking into account the post-covid era. I really appreciate your reply. I love your pfp as well 😮
@@yuyuefloyd Yeah the admissions structure is fascinating honestly.. it varies from year to year and school to school, but faculty often compose a significant portion of the final committee! i am glad my advice was helpful :)

Let me know if you want anything in particular!

My daughter is at Stanford. Advice: prepare your essays yourself, without outside help. No one saw my daughter's essays except herself. I'm sure that gave them a freshness and authenticity that was awarded in an admissions offer. Good luck!
That is valuable advice thankyou. What was her test SAT score
@@DiamondDepthYT What you're saying is conventional wisdom. I'm telling you what worked for my daughter who got in.

This is the MOST HELPFUL COLLEGE VID IVE EVER SEEN OMG thank you so much and you’re so funny
I think that is one of the more difficult essays to write... i'll do my best to make a good video in it :) thanks again for the comment
for me, im planning to write the why us based on specific extracurriculars they offer related to things im passionate about. im also writing about their marching bands cause i do band in hs but thats just me 🤷♀️
This is a golden video, please make more, you are so good man

love this honest advice! I got a 1500 in december 2023 but i still have to bring it up bc my school is so competitive
thank you!! honestly 1500 is really good especially on one test day; if you take again your superscore could be really high.

This is the first college admissions vid I've seen to mention UW and the only place I've heard it referred to as UWisc. 😅 Great vid, thx.
I am crying I did not even notice I did that… let’s make it a trend. Thanks for the comment :)
3.6 GPA may seem low for some schools but that is totally within range for a lot of good targets. apply early to a target/reach you really want.
so simply put, once again- do whatever you are doing and make yourselves unique
that's it
then there is no problem ig
Yes!!!

TYSM again for ur comment :)
i saw the desc and i agree. i like the colour scheme also!
Thank u! And omg hahahahha I’m so glad
thank you this helped a lot, feel like all this applies to be but test scores are a struggle for me, I'm an inexperienced test taker
Watching this as a middle-class straight white male with two college-educated parents...
pls read my other comments re diversity and also the content in the video... i have literally had students write about diversity from the perspective of liking fantasy novels make really compelling cases about their commitment to intellectual diversity. Diversity isn't just about race or sexuality; it is about mindset!

Can you do a video on what to do if you have a lackluster GPA but a very high test score? Like 3.4 UW but a 1560 SAT.
Smart. Yes!
Your info definitely jives with out experience.
thank you so much. seriously

Many schools are still test-optional.

Struggling to write my personal statement right now. Any tips?
From College to Life and Its Lessons
1st Lesson
- You have to learn to write in English! - It is impossible to enter a system without knowing its native language, so we will exercise all of this during this new year.
- Golden Phrase: The weight of the pen will always be lighter than the weight of the hoe (in other words, your best opportunities will arise from writing).
Main Objectives of an Essay
- It will be the human part of the application where you can show who you really are with your story and identity.
- A unique opportunity to reveal your personality.
- And it is certainly a stage that comprises several other parts of the process, such as Tests.
2nd Lesson
- Self-knowledge counts a lot here, because it is impossible to apply to a very cool university without showing or selling yourself.
- Analyze how you think, why you think this way, understand your feelings, who you are; this is certainly the most important part.
Going Deep into Each of the Common App Themes
Note: Remember that the Common App Essay must be between 250 - 650 words.
1. Background
- What to say? - Here you can tell your greatest experiences, a training that came into your life, talk about the education of your country, discuss ethnicities and races, or even talk about your extracurricular activities (just be careful not to turn this part into a resume).
- Ideas for you! - Hobbies, winning a 100% scholarship or any percentage at your school, about passions, family, sports, places/foods that marked you.
2. Failure
Note: Be careful!
3. Belief
Note: Only use this topic if you have excellent command of arguments.
4. Challenge
- What to say? - You can think of a problem that can range from "discovering the cure for cancer" to "a project to help improve your neighborhood," but it must have a profound impact on you and don't forget to question yourself about the WHY?
- Some Ideas! - Building a soccer field for the people on your street, helping NGO people spread their work on social media, creating a recycling campaign for the people in your condo or school, etc.
5. Achievement (This is what Lucas chose!)
- What to say? - Bring that "Aha" moment, that is, make your reader fully engage with different details that make them discover a new idea (this really needs to be in your text regardless of the theme), and you can still work on personal growth by telling about a transformation you had and showing it in your Essay.
- What did Lucas write? - His Essay was based on the 30 minutes before the game started, and he used the art of storytelling through a book called Storynomics, which he mentioned in our class.
6. Interest
- What to say? - Describe something that is a great passion for you!
- Three things Lucas loves to see in Essays - Perspective, Butterfly Effect, and Memories (it can be about family that involves you).
Other
- What to say? - This is a last resort, try to reflect on what didn't fit into any of the other categories and write about it.
- Negative Point - This can sound bad because it seems like you lack creativity and are using this as a last resort, so only do this as a last resort.
Step-by-Step Method that Lucas Passes to His Mentees
- The first step is to revisit the mentee's history.
- The second is to write down words or phrases that describe questions involving your childhood, relationships with your parents, who your parents are, when you appear in the story, and so on.
- Finally, after writing all this, try to connect how this ties into your Essay and try to match yourself with your college.
Your Best Friends
Inspiration
- The best way to write a successful Essay is by getting inspired by essays that have already worked, so read a lot (I will leave the link to some of them for you to read):
- [Essays That Worked - Johns Hopkins University](apply.jhu.edu/apply/essays-that-worked/)
- [Past Essays - Tufts University](admissions.tufts.edu/apply/advice/past-essays/)
- [The Choice Blog - The New York Times](thechoice.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/12/06/today-essay/?_r=0)

- [These Personal Essays Will Get You Into Stanford - Gawker](gawker.com/these-personal-essays-will-get-you-into-stanford-479621420)
Imagery
- Imagery is nothing less than making your reader feel like they are in your place within your story, so tell specific details that make them enter your world.
- Make your feelings their feelings.
Marketing
- The goal here is simply to turn seconds into minutes, which means making the beginning of your story the starting point to engage your reader throughout your entire text.
- Your essay is like a client; people will only like it if they can identify with something they have experienced at some point in their life.
3-4 Most Important Sentences in Your Essay
- 3rd - last sentence of the first paragraph.
- 2nd - first sentence of the essay.
- 1st - last sentence of the essay.
Storytelling (put a star here)
- It is impossible to create a story without conflict, that is, without an argument to convince someone that you have great value.
- So work a lot on the loop, this refreshes the reader's memory about your story and also becomes very strong in your Essay because it shows that it has a beginning, middle, and end.
Outlining (Model)
Outlining - is a way to develop a line of thought (pre-draft)
Metaphor: xxxx
Introduction:
- Idea 1
- Idea 2
- Conclusion
Development:
- Idea 1
- Idea 2
- Idea 3
Conclusion:
- Idea 1
- Idea 2
Summarizing in 5 Steps
- STEP 0 - INSPIRATION & BRAINSTORM
- Review your entire life.
- Images, documents, photos, talk to family...
- STEP 1 - REPERTOIRE
- Write 5 to 10 stories of your life (in Portuguese) without stopping on several sheets.
- Have a repertoire and ideas by writing a lot (it can be in Portuguese) about the important themes for you.
- Be it significant times in your history, transitions, failures, achievements, background, interests, passions... have about 3-5 giant essays to have a base.
- STEP 2 - VALUES
- Find your characteristics present in all the stories.
- STEP 3 - INSPIRATION
- Read many essays and study the writing process and structure in English.
- You need to learn how to write in English.
- READ DOZENS OF SUCCESSFUL ESSAYS.
- STEP 4 - MATCH
- Match the themes of the essays with some of your stories.
- STEP 5 - OUTLINE
I hope this helps!
Dang you should be making videos not me!! Seriously good advice
@@Claravlelra Thank you! I need this !!
Congrats on the high SAT score :)
What if only one parent has a degree while the other has a HS degree only?
Do I understand correctly that gpa and tests are the most significant parts in application? Even for art related fields?
I imagine the order of priorities like:
1. GPA/sat (if required)
2. Letters of recommendation
3. Portfolio (for art majors)
4. Extracurriculars and awards
Is it correct?
GPA and SAT are just used to qualify candidates. after that, it is different between schools.

I am just super scared because I want a fighting chance at top schools and I dont want the reason for me being filtered out being my SAT (1500 on my third attempt).

So being gay add any chances to enter university , i mean do they have Ddversity, equity, and inclusion ratings for blackrock , vanguard...?

Can you make a video on whether or not you should apply as Asian as a half Asian half white student? Low gpa 3.6W and 1460
They dont ask for race data anymore
thank you for making me laugh today
Thanks sm i rly appreciate it heeheehee

If your parents went to college you are not first gen. If they didn’t, then you are! It sounds like you aren’t. It isn’t a problem at all! It is a factor they consider that can affect your admissions chances BUT that is typically separate from scholarship. dont be concerned with that. Good luck!

What should our strategy be if we don’t have great scores? (SAT is in the 1300 range). Focus on essays and ECs?
Yes
Thank you for this! Also quick question : are colleges really looking for Ib/Ap credit? What if student decided to quit IB to attended a fully funded scholarship to study abroad for senior year? Would colleges view that negatively?
No especially not if you can weave that into your narrative- why you are studying there, why you got the award, etc. Of course if the rigor of the coursework is significantly lower that is something to consider. But overall that sounds like a great opportunity that could help you stand out if you play your cards right !

And I've taken my first demo SAT test on the bluebook app today( just to know where i'm starting from.) I got 1430 on that test. So, based on this how much time do i need to prepare myself fully for the SAT?
Up until late into my freshman year of High school, I was first gen. My dad got a degree that year online after loosing his job (2021) and my mom doesn’t have a degree. Is there a part of the application that I can share this, or does it not really matter since I’m not considered first gen anymore?
replied on other video :)
If I need a good amount of financial aid as an international student, will a score below the 75th percentile affect my chances?( My score is 1540)
I looked it up and the 25th percentile score at Harvard is 1470. I currently have a 1370 superscore and I think I can get to 1450 by committing a large fraction of what free time I have by December. Is that enough for Harvard or should I try for something more ?
go for it but try not to let your grades drop! study as much as you can without sacrificing other things.
@@CollegeChingu so 1450 is enough ? or should I devote more time and aim for 1500 ?
Will I be greatly disadvantaged if I apply test optional? I have a 4.5 weighted but a bad SAT, I am also applying to schools in the 20%-30% range
depends on the school check their common data set to see how heavily they weight SAT scores !
Rising Soph here,
Would i be considered first gen if my parents both went to college In Korea? FYI, mother went to an arts school while father law school.
unfortunately no but you can talk about being first gen american (that is not FGLI though)
I want to go into CS should I connect my personal statement into that? Right now it feels very cliche since it’s about my culture.
if you can do it smoothly then yes
i dont understand FGLI, are you asking us to say our parents are first gen even if they arent
No ofc not
@@CollegeChingu sorry, i misunderstood, anyways thanks for the amazing video, the sat part really helped, btw do you have any advice for international students ? i’m from france and i heard it’s even more competitive for international students
Are those SAT or ACT test needed for transfers?
For the point about emotional/social intelligence, I imagine that you shouldn't explicitly discuss the pandemic right (and instead you should indirectly show these attributes)? I feel like this topic would have gotten pretty repetitive/boring for AOs over the past 3 years.
yes!!!! exactly. sharp.
How important are test scores this year for admissions? I hope a lot!!!!
probably very important.... they'll definitely be used to help shrink the amount of files/essays the officers have to sift through after last years issues!!!
I have a question! If my mother went to school and earned a bachelors in another country, does that make me first-gen?
unfortunately no, but you should mention that in your "additional info" section (if one parent doesnt have a degree but the other does, but from outside the US, it means you don't have an established connection with the US secondary education system. so they would want to know that) or describe in an essay somewhere
@@CollegeChingu does this apply to internationals as well?
So, may I ask if you review essays😅?
yes i do! theleap.co/creator/collegechingu/
@@CollegeChingu
Don't you have free reviews? I can't afford it since 1usd=117 in our country.
@@KaleabZeru you can find cheaper essay reviews on fiverr! I can't speak to their quality but I would start there :) I do have a list of students I hope to review their essays for free I can add you to it but no i cannot guarantee you will be selected
@@CollegeChingu hope you will😅
What about age for diversity? Does a 16yo applicant contribute to diversity, even as a white male?
mm that is probably not a convincing one: think more experiential (what do you bring to the table that no one else does?) doesnt need to be about race or gender: a lot of students choose to right about experiences they had as a child, unique personality traits, etc
Okay thanks
@@wnJhntn i gotchu bro
Thanks for watching!! To work with me book here. theleap.co/creator/collegechingu/
So for the SAT the 75% is over 1550?
Diff for each school
That's for Harvard. The best of the best.
does the whole diversity thing apply to international students?
yes
@@CollegeChingu thanks a lot for replying, do i have any chance if i have good ECs but like a 8 maybe 9 out of 10 for grades' average (we dont have gpa here its out of 10)
All the scribbles 😂
😂😂😂😂 I’m a bit crazed and disorganized as you can probably tell…..

I appreciate you
Great video
thank you so much!!!
Hello! I’ve been loving your videos so far, the content is great! One thing I was noticing, however, is that your thumbnails could use a bit of work. If you would like, on your next video I could help you build a better one to reach more people. I can send you one of my designs if you put your business email on your channel!
Thank you! I’d love to see what you have done in the past. Collegechinguadmissions@gmail.com
