From someone who spent time at Harvard in graduate school, this is really hard to watch. Harvard is really not the be-all end-all of your life, and we’re lying to kids and stressing them out when society implies otherwise. Most of the undergrads at Harvard aren’t really that much different than college students at other places. The difference is the money and privilege their parents tend to have.
I wish this would get pinned. At the end of the day, even those kids parents hope those kids meet someone important or will be important and move up in society though.

@@HAHa-co3vlIt means exactly what she said. Try taking the blinders off. The vast majority of immigrants who come to America have no clue about the struggles of Black Americans and their fight for Civil Rights, ending segregation, and leveling the playing field in the workplace. That hard work is taken for granted and overlooked by Asians who are recent immigrants. Let’s not forget black Americans are foundational and have been in the United States for over 400 years. Black Americans do not make up the majority of accepted applicants at these elite institutions yet Asian Americans were led to believe that black Americans who were accepted were not accepted based on merit or ability, which is false. The thought was that getting rid of affirmative action would open up supposed applications Asians felt were reserved for black students (comply false!) to Asians they felt were more deserving. Now that affirmative action has been stripped away, they’re noticing that their plan backfired. The tool they needed was taken away from them by themselves…literally because of their own ignorance of the history of this country and the needs to have protections against discrimination. Interestingly, the same fervor and vitriol Asians demonstrated to end affirmative action to hurt black students has been virtually nonexistent toward white legacy admissions students and their acceptance rates to elite schools. I wonder why?….🙄.
Too much focus and false belief that professional success depends on graduating from the Ivy Leagues. This needs to change. It is unhealthy for the high schoolers.
You say this but many top businesses will not even consider interviewing people that went to 'non-target' schools. There are so many applicants and so many college student now that businesses don't have to entertain applications outside of the top few. With how expensive life has become. you wont be able to afford to live if you don't get a good job after college these days - which is heavily dependent on the school you went to.
but it's true... Ivy League schools even if you graduated with a 2.5 GPA you would always be preferred. I got a GPA of 3.5 from a regular university in accounting. I applied to many jobs couldn't get in. One job hired a man from Harvard with a 2.5 gpa. So, there's truth to it. If you go to these ivy league schools you will get a job regardless. Even though my business school uses case studies created by Harvard business school professors. I had to actually pay Harvard to buy case studies for my finance class. I had to create an account at their business school store and buy them. We had to analyses them . The education I had is the same as of the business school of Harvard because it has the same accreditation and the books and case studies used were written by Harvard professors. Yet, having the name Harvard on your resume to someone means you're the smartest person in the world.
It is, generally. But even with stellar academics and merit colleges can only take so much. They don’t have infinite space. There are other factors to consider.
They didn't forget they intentionally didn't want to touch them. To many white folk current and future would be affected. Some need that help to get in, that advantage over others for their grades won't make the cut.
They also get in due to paying others to take the SATs/ACTs for them and/or forged achievements/activities/etc to get them in. Thats how Lori Laughlin, Felicity Huffman , and several CEOS wound up on trial.
Institutions know what to do, they will enroll more students of alumni and wealthy students. Those schools were designed for the rich and now it will go back to the rich.
this make a lot more sense than them being racist. Majority of people in universities are not American anyways. I find it cute how media can just sway masses without ever anyone stepping inside a university and see how fucking diverse the place is.
Still blaming black people because you or others didnt get into an institution that you think you are entitled too. Precious. You didn't get in because of legacy.
Imagine applying to an Ivy League school where everybody has a great GPA and participates in extracurricular activities. How can you truly separate yourself from the rest? Its almost like hitting the lottery
And that is where reality hits. These top achieving kids are at the top 1% of kids in their school, maybe even in their school district - but when they apply to the Ivy’s, it’s top achievers from all over the world so they go from being a big fish to a small one. They don’t know they are one of tens of thousands of star pupils.
That is not the point. It was the point defender of AA made, call race as a so called tie breaker. In reality though, they actually have big gap in terms of academic performance. Just sat alone can show the gap which is ridiculous since sat is a very low standard assessment.

Personally i think if you are an immigrant or the child of an immigrant who came here after the immigration act of 1965, neither you nor your parents/grandparents did anything to obtain those rights. The fact that certain groups were the ones who actually put in the effort, did the work to obtain those rights, for a couple of centuries, should be allowed in first. Most Asians came here after the work was done. Immigrants who came here after 1970 should go to the back of the line for everything. Notice Asian immigrants went after the very people who did the work that they and their parents did not. It’s like being forced to literally build a business then not being allowed to do business there.
Absolutely ridiculous thing to say that mirrors the mentality of the KKK. What work did you do before 1964 that built this country? Did you build the banking system? Silicon Valley? Logistics networks? Global supply chains? Why should you benefit from the infrastructure that others built? The danger of rationalizing things is that you can rationalize just about anything. It’s only taking a step back and really looking at what youre saying or doing that shows reality. Stop advocating for Jim Crow era nonsense
Back of the line? So because your ancestors fought back against discrimination, noone else should be allowed to fight discrimination against their own race until you get yours? Your grandparentrs are the only people allowed to fight discrimination that hurts them and their children? Why are asians that are mostly one or two generations in this country doing better than whites? But hispanic people need affirmative action?
The truth is if you want to get into Ivy League schools, doesn’t matter what race or SAT score is, it’s all about how deep your pockets is to make super generous donation to the schools.
Harvard endowment is one of the largest slush funds in the world and no one can touch it because of its special privilege as an elite “educational” institution

Yes and now less black are accepted. It fair now. Only the qualified can be accepted. For example, if the SAT set a passing grade as 120 and both asian and black student gets it, the asian will be rejected and black will be accepted because Affirmative action. So it not fair, in reality, a passing grade for asian would be 180 and passing grade for black would be 100. Asian would have to score higher than the average passing grade meaning they have to be einstein level of smart to be accepted and not normal person smart. Point is, Affirmative action put a handicap on asian cause they're too smart, and does not for black cause blacks too dumb apparently by Affirmative Action. One get in easier and one has to do 5x harder. Affirmative action being gone makes it all better. This mean asians who scored average will likely be accepted at a 50/50 rather than just be straight out rejected, it applies to blacks too now so that equality based on merits, not skins color anymore that would benefit blacks.
Those who fought AA (affirmative action) thought the people who where *NOT THEM* did not deserve to be in a place *THEY WANTED.* So now it seems that those same people are condemned by their own prejudice. That is something to digest.
Per the harvard lawsuit, judge allison burroughs found _"harvards consideration of race favored black and hispanic applicants in a way it did not for asian americans or white americans"_ Burroughs also goes on to say, _"more than one third of the addmited hispanics and more than half of the addmitted african americans, would most likely not be admitted in the absence of harvards race-conscious admissions process"_

What you say sounds nice in a vacuum. But, the world isn't a place where everyone gets an equal shake in life. Where you are born in life (example zipcode/state/country) greatly dictate what opportunities and benefits you have. Yes but then 50% of student body would be white, 45% would be Asian and 5% would be black and brown students. This would create monster sized problems for the liberals
It has to do with the percentage of the population that a minority constitutes. So, when you have a racial group who has out-performed ALL other groups yet only makes up 4 percent of the population of the nation (or in the case of a state's population for that state's medical school positions), you only allow four percent of that group's applicants in. Despite having the highest GPA's and MEDCAT scores of ALL groups, competition between Asians for the few existing spots allocated is intense. So you're right mentioning competition but if you can see, it's only competition between Asian students.
Then how do you explain Harvard's "personality score" that consistently ranked Asians the lowest of all races? Are you implying that Asians have the poorest personalities? I agree about abolishing legacy admissions.

He didn't lose his seat at Harvard due to some "unqualified black or Hispanic kid"; he lost his seat to another Asian student. Why don't people get that it's Asian applicants themselves who have made it tougher, in a sense bottlenecking for other Asians to get into Harvard? Asians make up about 7% of the US population, but at Harvard, they comprise 19% of the population. Compare that to Blacks at Harvard, just 6%, while the US percentage of Blacks is 14%. Almost triple the number of Asian applicants apply to Harvard compared to Black applicants. Thus, if you're Asian, the difficulty in getting in isn't showing that you're a better applicant than, say, Kesha from New York, but rather proving you're distinct/unique from the hundreds and hundreds of other Asian applicants who also happen to be of Chinese descent, etc. And it's not even a racial issue. If it were Black Americans who were really obsessed with Harvard, then over time this positive feedback (where more and more Blacks apply, thus the standard/threshold for Blacks keeps getting higher, again a bottleneck/filter for the absolute best of the bunch) strengthens. Then you'll see stories like this of how Blacks are discriminated against because of their race...again, they are not. It's just that other Blacks have made it tougher for the average great Black applicant to get in over, say, the average White or Asian applicant. I don't know why people don't get this. Even during the time of Affirmative Action, it literally wasn't racially motivated that it was tougher for Asians to get in; it was a product of their own intra-competition. Harvard, just like your workplace or local park, surely wants people of all races represented, right? Unfortunately, the appeal for Harvard, commensurate to the induced heightened intra-competition within certain races, gives the false impression of racial discrimination. If you still think it's racially motivated and for whatever reason Harvard seems to love "unqualified Blacks" over very well-qualified Asian applicants, right? Then explain why MIT, another top-notch elite university which is on par with Harvard for its ultra-competitiveness and has NEVER practiced Affirmative Action, and just recently its Class of 2027 is 15% Black, which is even greater than the US Black population which again stands at 14%. People need to start thinking critically about these things and stop defaulting to the most simplistic and comforting conclusions.

Employers would pick a white person with no experience and education over a minorities with education and no experience or a minorities with no education and experience every day of the week.
And I have even seen a few times where they picked a white person with no education and experience over a minority with both education and experience. white privilege exists. white privilege is racism. If someone has ever flexed their white privilege, they ARE racist.

Word of advice to minorities, mostly first, or second-generation folk. Going to a high-ranking school is a give-and-take. When you graduate, you enter the world as a representative of said school. These schools want people who have the potential to be leaders, and creators of new concepts, systems, ideas, etc. They want people who can deal with tough situations and make it through victoriously. They want to know if you can lead a group even if they don't look like you (btw, Trying to rip opportunities away from Black and Brown people for your benefit was a bad look and not what leaders would do), they don't want to be associated with scandals, or bad decision-making (like removing Affirmative Action). They want you to represent them when you are gone. A test score and extra AP classes can't determine how you would handle challenging situations. Stop focusing on scores, no one really cares especially if your parents paid for it. They would rather have someone who got a high GPA without being handed unlimited resources, versus someone who depended on mommy and daddy. Removing Affirmative Action made it a bit more difficult for Asian people because it was an untrustworthy move, and was selfish. Imagine working with someone like that who would have the potential to create a hostile working environment to get a promotion rather than fair or unfair competition. Blaming other people for your failures just doesn't look as good as you think.
I’m glad my parents didn’t place this dumb unneeded stress of trying to get in these so called “top” colleges. Plenty of schools provide a great education and if you’re actually passionate about your field and dedicated success will follow. I agree. Studying so hard and doing all kinds of extracurriculars just for the sake of getting into an Ivy league...it is just so shallow, you should do these things due to internal motivation and not to please your snob parents so they then can brag to their Chinese friends. This story of Asian parents pushing their children for social status without any thought about their child’s real aspirations is just so common that even my brother’s wife has been traumatized by this in her school years. @@手笨也得吃饭 News flash, affirmative action was declared unconstitutional JUST last year. And Duke is still a respectable university, so idk what you’re talking about
Affirmative action did not work for everyone clearly. It is a meritocracy system especially in ivy leagues. I’m in Stanford medical and there are huge disparities especially ethnically regardless of GPA or excellence. The majority of students at Stanford are 2nd or third gen Chinese and primarily white. I’m mixed and the population of others so to speak are less than 1 percent and my GPA speaks for itself.
Without affirmative action, the system is overrun with tiger moms that skew the student populations with one demographic. It's not even American to do that and not give a fair chance to white, brown, black and red students.
Mrs, Morris, congratulations , we need to be visible. no matter how mixed we are when african heritage is in the cooking, you know we are black . i came from ESwatini in Africa . as you can see my last name is Zulu . i knew before i set foot in the US that even though i have a caucasian parent , my full set of Zulu name obviously reveals that i have a domestic Home in the continetal african customs. But you haven't offered a complete reason as to why folk aren't being "up to scratch" so to speak because i am pretty sure it is a same across europe , brain power is only 1/10th of the things that factor into admission. On a separate note . Were you named after Octavia Butler or you just happened to be the 8th child in the family
It is my understanding that for years Ivy League school imposed an unofficial cap for applicants from NYC's top specialized schools. The reason given was that the sheer number of qualified/over qualified students who had graduated from those schools would flood the incoming freshman classes, thus robbing the schools of much needed diversity. For the record I went to the Bronx High School of Science which, alongside Stuyvesant, was one of the top 5 schools in the country
Admission should be merit based only. No legacy, no racial consideration. Affirmative action was in place long enough to ensure generations of children from those who benefitted from it should be made to compete on merit, not race or legacy. Dr. Amanda Calhoun was raised in an environment where she should complete on merit, which she likely did & not race or legacy. If an applicant's merits and "stats" as people call them cannot stand on their own without race or legacy, there are other schools. We now see many schools bringng back test scores for admission. They now have data showing that admitting someone based on anything other than academic rigor, only hurts the student if they cannot do the work. Congrats to David & Joely on getting into Duke & Brown! They will be superb!
Legacy admissions are a thing in the top 2 schools in the UK, France , Germany etc.. numerus clausus ain't the only thing that get you thru the doors. so don't go acting as if it didn't start in europe before being a normalized thing in the US.
Aka white students. Black people we have been saying that yet a lot of whites and some Asians ignored that and wanted to focus on AA even though it benefits white women the most.
@@gm6034 You realize there are people who want to get rid of both right? You act like it's either or. And you just conveniently ignore the black students who DEFEND legacy admissions like at 8:46 because it benefits themselves. Maybe just maybe stop putting people into boxes?
quantitatively, no race-based admissions is a far bigger factor. This is also a terrible point because the abolishment of affirmative action and legacy admissions are not mutually exclusive.
While I was at Harvard, there were more valedictorians rejected than there were openings for new students. This particular student had great testing, scores AND extracurriculars. But what I've found is that you have a better chance if your essay shows some kind of major obstacle you or your family have faced that you have overcome. Also, community service and a trajectory or narrative that shows how your academics, extracurriculars and community service all come together to tell a story about your life helps a huge amount.
Besides affirmative action, I think there is a problem with students and parents wanting to go to Ivy-league or top prestigious colleges. Seriously, there is nothing so much special about getting into those prestigious colleges that defines your self-worth or how proud you and your parents should be. Yes, you may have had a better support system than most people while you were growing up so that you could focus on college preparation. Yes, you might be more multifaceted and talented in a few other things than many others. Yes, you might have a better GPA or SAT/ACT scores, or better "stats" than others. However, we as a society need everyone, not just talented a few. Someone needs to do jobs that other might not like, or vice versa. We wouldn't be able to cherish all that we have today without having so-called "average" or "not-so-special" typical college graduates that are not from those prestigious colleges. I personally believe that flagship universities in the states in the U.S. provide great educational opportunities and are affordable, especially with in-state tuitions. I think it is now a time to acknowledge that prestigious colleges do not define who you are, but it is us who we define the colleges that we go to as future alumni. Yes, it will be a hard battle for most of us if we picked the college to attend solely based on our practical needs for education and having opportunities for societal advancement, but we should always remember that no matter where we attend the college, they should be lucky to have us! I do understand the pain of not going to school that one does not want to go and there can be many reasons for that. However, as I mentioned, while not going to Harvard may not make you and your support system proud of themselves, there is nothing wrong with going elsewhere for college. I think the society needs to deflate the overvalued prestigious colleges and focus on brining true opportunities for societal advancement to all colleges, not just a few!
This is the end-all, be-all for people who have moved to America, but have no knowledge of its actual history. They don't want you there. If they did, the need for affirmative action would become void. Sending your children to collegiate mental abuse makes you irresponsible as a parent.
The fact that Harvard no longer publishes the racial make up of their freshman class should tell you a lot. Basically, what the lawsuit revealed was that Harvard gives huge preferences to an extremely select group which enjoys the benefit of a kind of super affirmative action. This supergroup (80% of which is white and wealthy) takes 1/3 of available seats and usually apply for Early Action. This super group which takes up 1/3 of the seats constitutes only 5% of the applicant pool. Less than 2% of Asian applicants fall into this supergroup. So the number of Asians who are admitted constitute less than 2% of the supergroup, whereas 43% of White applicants who are admitted are from this supergroup. The plaintiff's attorney argued that Harvard needed affirmative action for underrepresented minorities to balance out the super preference given to this group of mostly rich whites who are either Athletes, Children and relations of Donors, Legacies, and Children of Staff and Faculty. This led some black leaders (usually male) to decry the use of affirmative action, likening the presence of black and brown students to zoo animals whose purpose is to 1) give a diverse experience to this super group, and 2) to give the impression that Harvard actually cares about diversity when in reality, it's priority is cultivating wealth and privilege. While at Harvard, the groups don't really mix socially leading some to describe it as a kind of "aesthetic diversity." The argument was put forth that if Harvard truly cared about diversity, they would commit to outreach programs with community colleges. Instead, the black and brown students who are admitted are often rich, including the children of African diplomats, African royal families, etc...

The fact that certain groups were the ones who actually put in the effort, did the work to obtain those rights, for a couple of centuries, should be allowed in first. Most Asians came here after the work was done. Immigrants who came here after 1970 should go to the back of the line for everything.
Per the harvard lawsuit, judge allison burroughs found _"harvards consideration of race favored black and hispanic applicants in a way it did not for asian americans or white americans"_

Asian applicants being rejected has more to do with competition then anything else. Get rid of legacy admissions if you really care about fairness.

Brother, even with affirmative action Asians were mostly rejected in Harvard.
White people who went to schools in the suburbs are not required to take the basic standards test to pass high school. Yet, so many racists run their mouth about the system. They want to protect their white privilege. I use to think why there isn't a "white" scholarship, etc. if there's one for minorities. Well, life experiences have shown me that they don't need one because the color of their skin provides them with white privilege in life.

@@手笨也得吃饭 News flash, affirmative action was declared unconstitutional JUST last year. And Duke is still a respectable university, so idk what you’re talking about
Yep. This is exactly what entitlement looks like.

I graduated from an Ivy League University for my master's degree. I can't find a good paying job and no one cares about where I went to school.

I do hope that ABC follows up on this story after 6-8 years to see how this changes Harvard and other Ivy Leagues student body.
Why are ya'll so obsessed with going somewhere that doesn't want to claim you. Go to a state school.
In a perfect world merit should carry you but in that perfect world their also wouldn't be racist keeping you out no matter what your merits say.
Lmao! Now you get to see just how equal you really are!!! Now you can't get in cause you got rid of the one thing that was forcing them to accept you if you was luxky!😂😂😂😂
