    It is so wonderful to see Nate again. Shadiversity has not been the same without him. On the topic of a flaming sword, I don't think a sword just being on fire is going to make it more lethal. The blade would have to be hot enough to glow to get any real tangible benefits from the flame. But that alone would cause a whole host of problems.

    I am 68% sure that a Titanium-nickel-palladium alloy can be made into a sword that can cut through iron, the sword will be 90°c for a minimum of 10 years just because of the fluctuating crystal structure and it can self heal so its an added bonus
    Proposed Alloy Composition:
    Titanium (Ti): 45-55 wt%
    Nickel (Ni): 40-50 wt%
    Palladium (Pd): 5-10 wt%

    • @FuknKms
      @FuknKms Месяц назад

      How hard is this alloy compared to mild steel?

    • @Esperologist
      @Esperologist Месяц назад +10

      Well, the question is... what are the actual properties of the alloy?
      It needs to be either rigid enough to withstand more than steel (to avoid bending), or have enough spring to return to form.
      Self healing sounds good... but what are the details? Is it a spring property where even bends will eventually be corrected, or can it actually mend cracks or breaks by re-attaching the split bonds?
      As for cutting through iron, I presume that means it can hold a sharper edge, and better resists the impacts of combat... with the intent being 'cut through an opposing iron sword'... as 'cut through an iron bar or ingot' would be much harder.
      But then, does cutting through iron matter... when swords are steel? How would it fair against a steel sword?
      And yet another matter... what sort of scabbard would be needed if the sword is always 90°C? I mean, I would not be carrying that sort of sword on my person at all times. Keep it in a case, with venting so it doesn't build up heat... and transport that case carefully by cart, or special harness that puts distance between it and the creature carrying it.

    • @markfergerson2145
      @markfergerson2145 Месяц назад +7

      @@EsperologistI think the temperature thing is about the range of temperatures the alloy is in a particular crystal structure. Most alloys change their properties when their structure changes, and some have pretty sharp temperature limits for those structures.
      Tiny amounts of elements can have drastic effects on alloy properties. For instance rhenium makes steels enormously tougher at less than one percent by weight without affecting hardness. The proposed alloy might or might not benefit from rhenium, it’s just a thought. Also, rhenium is horrendously expensive. Rhenium steels are used in some military turbine blades where resistance to damage is a high priority.

  • @chipsdubbo6983

    I wonder if the reason it performed better with a bevel than a sharpened edge is because of the softness of the steel, the sharpened edge being perhaps so small and weak due to the heat that it would just lose any effective edge too quickly. While on the other hand the bevel although not sharp its shape can be easily maintained so that what 'edge' it has isn't lost. Just a guess though.

    For a flaming sword to be useful you would need 2 specific properties one the flame can not touch the blade or there is a constantly supply of fresh fuel. A old stage magic trick of setting your hand on fire for example uses plain old isopropyl of a high percentage. It is easy to put out and you know when to put it out as you will feel your hand getting warm. When you first light it your hand gets cooler as the hot air goes up and draws in cool air. So as long as there is always more fuel being added the blade will if any thing get a little cooler. And the second thing is the burning fuel needs to transfer from the blade to the target. You hit on those 2 things and even a slight glancing blow can become a very serious threat even if the blade does not bite in to flesh the clothing or gambeson could be lit on fire worse yet if it is under the armor and on fire by the time they get the armor off they are well and truly screwed and in mid evil times that would have meant death

    For comparison, I kinda want to see the fire sword used... but without fire.
    Could that sword profile do that same performance without the flame?
    It really does need that control comparison to better gauge if the flames actually did anything. Because, to me, it didn't look like the fire did anything except when the edge was rubbed against a surface or the swing was stopped in the material.
    Like the pool noodles... they started melting during extended contact, but the swings had brief contact.
    The pork on the other hand, swings would be stopped by it so the contact was extended and allowing the fire time to singe.

    9:08 Testing that out on water bottles was actually VERY unfair, since water has an absolutely absurd ability to absorb heat. You could have put that bottle directly into a rolling campfire and it wouldn't burn until enough of the water had boiled out. Heck, before the invention of cooking vessels people used to boil things in hide stretched over a fire. Again it wouldn't burn at all as long as there was enough water in it.

    That of course means that landing a strike is easier, or getting them to shit their pants as you approach is giving the fire user an advantage to cause more damage more easily.

    Hoping this doesn’t mean Nate’s departure was related to shad, but cool test! From a nerdy perspective, Game of thrones described the post-blade of a fire sword gimmick to be an absolute wreck, hence Gendry mentioning thy at the red priest bought many a blade and in bulk before Performing such a feat. That said, I imagine the “heat-metal” version of a flame sword to be the vastly superior of the two concepts. Outside of magical fire which frankly isn’t feasible.
    Any steel you “charged” red hot would likely warp on contact with a harder target but the damage for soft targets like the pool noodles or maybe even T-mats would be devastating.

    I'd say a fire sword can be very brilliant, if it is used correctly and specifically as a piercing weapon.

    I think off hand torch wielding is better. swing that blinding thing in your enemy's face and still see where your own weapon is.

    I think we can all agree that this is the exact reason why fire swords use magical fire. Cause normal fire swords is not the beast idea😂

    So fire swords actually cut better (sometimes). Interesting. I expected the fire to be totally useless since its not in contact with the target for too long, but yeah, could be considered that it adds crit chance to your weapon.

    well, a steel blade being put constantly in high temperature would make it maleable on repeating impacts. and sword fights would have a lot of clashings. it wont make it easier to cut the colder opponent sword since it will be harder and in a more resilient state than the burning one, but its instead vice versa, it would make the sword on fire get itself damaged beyond believe. i think its bad bad idea. unless if its all about buttering the breads. now thats a different situation.

    Gonna be honest...even in pop culture I've only really have seen 1 'fire sword' that was very lethal mostly due to the flames and that'd be the Blazing Sword Alphen uses in the video game Tale of Arise. Granted there's no way to really make that one work in real life as it's 100% magic based in the game...the other cool part though was showing you how dangerous such a sword would be for the user as well (and why you need a dedicated magic healer in the party at all times lol). Granted said 'blazing sword' looks more like a blazing blunt sword shaped stick/staff more so than an actual sword though when you actually see it.
    As for the blazing sword concept though it's less so that the fire aids in cutting in any way imo and more so produces a fear factor/secondary danger of igniting the opponent more than anything else.
    The only real cases of fire swords in pop culture/myths really having the fire help in cutting is whenever I see the blade outright turn red due to extreme heat more or less burning or more specifically melting things as they 'cut' into it (or the above example with Alphen and the Blazing Sword in Tales of Arise). Basically it's more superheated metal than fire swords most of the time (same concept of a fire poker I guess which if you leave in flames will heat it up to the point it could probably pierce through quite a few things its stabbed into).
    Personally I'd say if you involve fire into a weapon's kit it should just be via fire arrows, turning a live torch into a weapon (get it in someone's face and they're screwed as their vision will almost certainly get compromised or if the flames graze any part of their body they could catch fire, and other existing based fire weapons (melee or ranged)...real life fire swords have the flames get way too close to yourself to be a smart idea (torches while also melee are usually burning at the opposite end of what you're holding and I guess in theory you could make a spear like torch work too for additional range...granted in all cases of having a fire weapon you need to be careful/be ready to put the flames out with something in case something went wrong).
