How Florida's "War on Woke" Could Provide a Glimpse Into America's Future | Foreign Correspondent

  • The US state of Florida has become the epicentre of a nation-wide culture war and a model for the country’s right wing conservative movement. Led by Governor Ron DeSantis, the only serious Republican rival to Donald Trumps’s presidential bid, the state has become the place where “woke goes to die”.
This week on Foreign Correspondent the ABC’s Washington bureau chief Jade Macmillan travels to the sunshine state to see how this war is playing out.
The battlegrounds are schools and universities where new laws on the teaching of issues like race and gender are bitterly dividing communities. While other US States are watching closely, and some even following suit, all eyes are now on Ron DeSantis who is expected to announce a run for the Republican presidential nomination.
The question is will the Governor’s “anti-woke” blueprint take him all the way to the White House?

20 years ago when I first went to the US I called it exciting and fun. 20 years later I call it violent and angry. Interesting to see how the US will deal with all this rage in the future. I fear we are watching its downfall and what a darn shame. I met so many good people that ended up raving political bobble heads. Politics is the new hollywood in America.

Just as Australia had a recent report that said how the top 10% had done brilliantly over the past 25+ years while the rest of us struggle the Americans had a similar report last September EXCEPT its EVEN WORSE.
The American report was done by the Congressional Budget Office, which means its beyond question. If you want I explain the data but in nutshell the Top 10% of America have not only recovered from the GFC, but are now over $30 Trillion better off than they were in 2007. The Middle 40% are finally better off but it took a while and they aren't that far ahead of their 2007 position. The Bottom 50% who lost almost 1/2 their wealth in the GFC, not only haven't recovered but are still a long way behind their 2007 position.
That's 165 Million Americans are still behind where they were 15 years ago and another 132 million are barely above water while about 33 million who got bailed out after the GFC they created are booming.

Basically to be aware of tools of oppression and control even after slavery. Also to be more aware of what happened in history (not just slavery but native Americans and immigrants) that was changed or non-included in school . It really had nothing to do with LGBT but now woke us used synonymously with equal rights for everyone. It’s now a political propaganda term, twisting its meaning into something unrecognizable of the original meaning.

@@gl2996 thanks for making my point about misattributing blame.. nobody is arguing that sea levels don't change in a cyclical manner over 10s of thousands of years. but changes due to cycles are just one of the many causes for rising tides.
This biggest problem for coastal residents is the tropical storms which amplify damaging king tides that will only increase in size and frequency as ocean evaporation increases due to a warming ocean cause by excess C02 and Methane in the atmosphere. These super storms are rapid and unpredictable which means you can't just build levies and sea walls to protect against them.

Maybe if the parents weren't so strict and homophobic or transphobic the kids would feel safe in confiding to them!

Yeah it's a little bit sad that these kids trust her and feel safer telling her their feelings and secrets than they do their own parents.

Also: "lock up parents who take their kids to drag story hour or allow them to start transitioning.

Yes parents who let their kids transition are disgusting people. When I was 6 I wanted to be a woman. Now at 33 I never in a million years would ever want to be a woman. If my mother decided to follow my wishes at 6 and transitioned me into a girl, I would probably hate her so much right now. People who support underage kids right to transition are disgusting people.

It's very easy to just slightly change the wordings of what people said, and then make it sound like the person is crazy.
Like no one said parents should have "all control" over their children.
I don't think you should allow any children to chop off healthy parts of their bodies just because he/she said "I want to be an opposite gender".

This report seemed very even in its coverage of this topic, and I really appreciate that, so I just wanted to say so. What we need is not more Us vs Them, but equal and as objective as possible reporting.
The news media on every side of everything is more responsible for the divide and the downfall of America than anyone seems to be noticing. But, it's not necessarily because they're evil or run by some big bad billionaire, more than likely, it's because people crave the drama, so drama is what sells units for the media. Hollywood has been so mired down in crap over the past decades that it rarely ever makes anything other than a remake of something already done in the past that it no longer holds the entertainment value it used to capture people's attention with, so now the news media has gone the route of reality television... some sort of combination of Big Brother, Jerry Springer and one of the many shows where people are eliminated every week from the competition. :P
