How to fix HARD CLOSING DOORS on a Chevy GMC Squarebody by replacing STRIKER BOLTS [Wrench At Home]

  • Today I'm working on my 1980 #GMC #Squarebody #Stepside truck again, and I have a short and sweet episode for you. A common problem with these older trucks is that the doors won't shut properly, unless you Hulk smash them closed. Most of the time the reason this happens has something to do with the door striker bolts. They have (or had) plastic bushings on them, but they are often worn out or even missing completely.
    There is a quite simple and cheap fix for this. What a lot of people do is they mimic the stock bushing by using electrical tape and or 1/2 inch Pex tubing or plastic PVC pipe. Tthat is exactly what I tried as well, and this solution was working fine untill I replaced the weather seals in my doors. Because of the new, stiffer rubber, shutting the doors has become quite the pain again, so I decided to just replace the striker bolts with brand new ones.
    I feel like I don't need to say this, but before you try this yourself, make sure your door is aligned properly and is not sagging because of worn out or misaligned hinges.
    I got my replacement striker bolts from LMC Truck, and they come with fresh, factory style bushings already installed.
    The striker bolts are screwed into a backing plate that's behind the sheet metal of your door frame using a torx or hex driver - this can differ based on the manufacturer of your bolts. The new bolts don't come with new plates, so you'll need to reuse those. The old bolt often leaves its mark on your paint, which makes it easier to get the new bolts in the correct position.
    Before I put the new bolts in, I applied a small dab of copper grease so I can easily remove the bolts in the future if I need to.

    $9.95 per side isn’t a bad price to pay for smooth closing doors. Subscribed

    Thanks for this video even though I'm 2 years late to the party. I was going nuts trying to figure out the issue with my 1979 GMC Sierra 15 Heavy Half. Again Thanks!!!!

    TO ANYBODY WATCHING: Would you kindly tell me which of your tools DOES fit into the Torx ("Star") fitting on your door striker correctly? (T50 won't go in, T47 much too loose, no such thing as a size 47 Torx Plus.) I have the original striker, GM brand.)

    A lot of times the problem with closing these doors after replacing weather seals is that the air can not escape because the cab does not have a vent to relieve pressure. Open a window and see if you get the same result.

    Has you lowered your truck ? How was it lowered and how much ? Are your wheels 15's ? Thank you Steve

      @WrenchAtHome  2 года назад

      The truck has indeed been lowered by a previous owner. I don’t know how they did it and I don’t know how high it used to be before they lowered it, but it’s low enough with all the speed bumps we have over here. The wheels are 15 inch Prime 22 wheels from Prime Wheel Corporation!

      I don't know where you are from, but I've seen a lot of peope using PEX tube as a replacement for the plastic bushing, you could get that at Home Depot. The sizing would be a 3/4" long piece of 1/2" diameter. Thanks for watching!

      Nice! Alright, so that must be metric system, 1/2" is 12,7 millimeters diameter. I think PVC tube will work as well. Good luck!
