Love Steely Dan, there are no bad Steely Dan tracks. Btw, I graduated High School in 1982 and as I drove out of the parking lot after graduation I blasted My Old School...and, Ive never been back, lol

Picking a top ten of Steely Dan is like reading a killer novel and picking out favorite chapters. To hear a random Steely Dan song on the radio is what radio and great music were built for. Timeless, transcendent and untouchable.

September, vacationing in the Florida keys, I was 13 years old. I came out of the cabin rental and I immediately hear the beginning of Black Cow blasting from the RV area about 50 yards away. I followed the song and it got louder and louder until I found my friend, Manolo “Moly” Hernandez with his stereo out and blasting!! My life changed that afternoon. Moly holds to this day this day that he catches more fish when he plays Aja on the boat...even the fish know. Even the fish know.

Took me a while to warm up to Steely Dan. I was a metal head in my youth. But once I did I discovered the guitar work on all of their records is absolute genius. So tasteful.

I was talking to a local DJ that had gone from spinning vinyl to having a talk show, and we both brought up ‘Countdown to Ecstasy’. He wanted to know if I liked the whole album or just a few cuts. I said I liked the whole album, ‘Razor Boy’ came to mind for me. Jeff Baxter is playing a slide guitar, and the whole song reminded me of some people who I knew back then who were living beyond their means. It made you feel like the repo man was just around the corner. Two or three years later we got to see Steely Dan with the late Walter Becker. Donald Fagen said they were going to play ‘Razor Boy’, but the beautiful backup singers were going to fill the slide guitar part. It always made me wonder if the boys had been listening to that syndicated talk show I was on. Didn’t matter, because I was just thrilled they played the majority of the album. They may not have toured much in their early years, but I was really reeling in the years when they started to play. Very professional musicians!! RIP Walter … a little piece of my school days were gone.

You both had Aja on your lists, but neither of you mentioned the name of drummer Steve Gadd, who absolutely killed it on that record. Speaking of drummers, there was no mention of Bernard Purdie and “the Purdie Shuffle”. The drummers were an integral part of the Steely Dan sound.

I'm amazed that no-one mentions 'Charlie Freak' from Pretzel Logic. A complete, heartfelt tragedy in 3 minutes with exquisite piano. 'Barrytown' (also from PL) becomes more relevant with each passing day. Neither have the fireworks of a 'Kid Charlemagne' or 'Do It Again' but they're absolute pearls of songwriting.

  • @BigWade57
    @BigWade57 5 лет назад +5

Wow, my list is VERY different. I'm just a few years younger than you guys, so I still have been listening to Steely Dan for 30+ years, and I'm tired of their most popular songs. So my list goes as follows:
    1. Dr. Wu
    2. Third World Man
    3. Here at the Western World
    4. Brooklyn
    5. Don't Take Me Alive
    6. Barrytown
    7. Turn That Heartbeat Over Again
    8. Black Cow
    9. The Royal Scam
    10. Gaucho
I love a lot of the lyrical aspects to most of these. In Dr. Wu, the famous sax solo actually is like a drug trip, which makes it even more special. Here at the Western World is an amusing story of a brothel. People always wonder about Brooklyn, but it describes when the guys lived in (or visited a friend at) an apartment. The downstairs neighbor would often be out on his balcony, loudly complaining to his wife about how the world had done him wrong, and owed him. They called the guy "the charmer," and made a song about his gripes. Barrytown is about the Moonies in Tarrytown, not far from where you live, Pete. Black Cow is a sad story of a guy whose love for the girl is unreqited, but he still looks out for her. I always thought it would be fun to write a novel that intertwined the lives of all the various characters in the Steely Dan songs. Glamour Profession just missed my list, but that drug dealer's life would make a good story all by itself!

I guess it's because of their attention to detail and settling for nothing short of perfection from their session players, but there's no such thing as a bad Steely Dan Top Ten list. Not every track was a commercial success, but it was guaranteed to be done well. I can't think of another band from any genre that I can say the same thing for. Personally I couldn't do a Top Ten without Dirty Work, but everything else was solid. Mike was great! Would love to see him again.

New sub. I'm in a Steely Dan...thing....lately. Im going through a deepening of my love for them. So many songs. So much to enjoy. So many reasons. So i in the mood to watch people talk about them and add my 2c.
You mention their jazz influences but man they had a toe in country as well. Swooping harmonies. Steel guitars. Lots of their players were very comfortable with country music. It fits so well too. That has always been something i really appreciate about steely dan is how seamlessly they braid together. It's not an easy mashup.
Show biz kids is one of my very fav songs by them! "Lost Wages" is wordplay for Las Vegas. I love the backing vox here and the phrasing of the melody. It shuffles along kind of like harlem shuffle?
I also really really love midnite cruiser. "Thelonius my old friend.
More later i will edit. Now im chasing "song for my father" edit: delicious! And a very accurate sample there.
I love so many of these songs you listed for the same reasons.
Drink scotch whiskey all night long...and die behind the the wheel! Whaaaaaaaaaaa!
I think I really like their funky stuff i guess. Hey nineteen. FM. Peg. Fez. Black Friday. Bad sneakers.
We might be the same age because the first song I remember from them is rikki alap and i didn't like it. I also didnt like sultans of swing or baker street. I was young. I got my shit together.
Love this video. Looking forward to more content and discussion.

Very late here. Love Steely Dan.
This is hard. I can't rank these at all, but these are my rough top 10 (in no particular order):
    Deacon Blues
    Peg
Any Major Dude Will Tell You
    The Fez
    The Boston Rag
    Gaucho
    The Caves of Altamira
    Parker's Band
    Dirty Work
    Third World Man
Many people here have said Steely Dan didn't really make a bad tune. I fully concur. Didn't make a bad album, either. Everything they did was brilliant, and this top 10 list doesn't begin to scratch the surface; it just feels so incomplete. I could have stuffed a dozen more on here with ease.

      1. My Old School
      2. Kid Charlemagne
      3. Dirty Work
      4. Decan Blues
      5. Do It Again
      6. The Fez
      7. Reeling in the Years
      8. Aja
      9. Peg
      10. Black Friday
Honorable mention is Pete's #1 Rikki Don't Lose That Number. I think it is their least musically and lyrically complex song. But it is just so damn catchy and I love hearing it even if it is played over and over again on the radio. Steely Dan can't write a bad song or make a bad album. They are very unique in that regard, no stinkers.

So great to hear Mike reference how young Jeff Porcaro was at the time. My wife and I first marveled at a 17 year-old Porcaro drumming for Sonny & Cher at a March 19, 1972 concert in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Then 2 years later we're attending our first Steely Dan concert on April 21, 1974 at the U. of Toledo when we recognize Jeff tandem drumming alongside Jim Hodder. He had just turned 20 on April 1st. It was so great to see his face on 1975's "Katy Lied" album cover, assuming the role of drummer Jim Gordon on their "Pretzel Logic" LP.

    • @theivory1

I don't think they have a bad song. Although when I listen to full albums I skip, Chain Lightning, Show Biz Kids, Everything You Did, I Got The News, Janie Runaway, and I almost never listen to the album Everything Must Go. Overall, that's pretty good, only a handful of songs.

    • @NowhereMan7
      @NowhereMan7 4 года назад

@@theivory1 Chain Lightning is one I skip as well. I understand skipping Show Biz Kids - its very "one chord". One day it just clicked with me how awesome it is though. The whole song is basically building up to the one line "show business kids making movies for themselves you know they dont give a fuck about anybody else", then just resumes as it was before.

  • @xaspirate8060

THis turned out to be like a homework assignment! I must love this band alot because I just spent over an hour shuffling songs around and actually feeling guilty about leaving songs of the list (esp. those that were my fav song for a period of time) and weighing a few up against the Live version. Plus my REAL favorite is not technically a SD song ... but lets face it, it really is a Steely Dan song --- So here goes:
    1. Change of the Guard - this was the one that let me know that I was going to like this band alot
2.Chain Lightning - I saw them live once and this was the song that killed that night IMHO
    3. The Fez - used to be my favorite song to dance to when no one else was around
    4. Sign In Stranger - the SD song that gets in my head and I have to listen to it or it won't go away
5.Everything You Did - Ssoooo where did the Bastard run?
    6. Brooklyn - 'Owes the charmer under me' -- don't understand but don't care at this point
    7. ShowBiz Kids - "They got the shape-a-lee bodies -they got the SteelyDan Tshirts - and for the 'Cooper de Gra-ah
    8. King of the World It took me years to get into this one. Don't ask me why. Glad I did finally.
    9. Caves of Altamira I could have easily just listed 'The ROyal Scam' in order and saved alot of time!
    10. Glamour Profession - had to get this on list, I used to HATE this song and always skipped. Had a bad hangover one day and somehow heard this song and have loved it since. Again, don't ask why --- I don't know.
    HONORABLE MENTIONS here...
First off my Real favorite is off the sub par Night Fly = New Frontier. But it's a Donald F solo job so... My favorite song of all time for a long while. Just superb in every way.
Some of the other songs that could just as easily go up here (already lopped a bunch of them off) are as follows:
    The Royal Scam
    Rose Darling
    Don't Take Me Alive
    Fire in the Hole
    Any Major Dude
    Hey Nineteen
    Here at the Western World
Third World Man (my favorite sad song from SD)
LAST THING -- when listening to radio over past many decades, preferably driving, nothing thrills me more than when I am listening to a song I like and then it ends... and a half a second later I am hearing the opening chords of 'Reeling In the Years' == A little bit of heaven on Earth baby!!

    Here's a top-9, in more of a chronological order:
    1) Do It Again
    2) Kings
    3) The Boston Rag
    4) Turn That Heartbeat Over Again
    5) Night by Night
    6) Kid Charlemagne
    7) The Royal Scam
    8) Deacon Blues
    9) FM
I'd say that "Do It Again" and "Kings" would battle it out for my top 2, and then it's hard to pick an order in the next seven songs, and then there's maybe 10 other songs which would be fighting it out for position #10 on my favorites. The order would change from week-to-week. I also think it's a little surprising how *few* bands attempted to follow in the musical/lyrical footsteps of Steely Dan.
