I'm 21 and I can't help but feel Martin is a little disconnected. The hits from that album (which is most of it) still get played all the time and most people my age know and like those songs. The most common band T-shirt to see at my university is Led Zeppelin, easily. I don't really have a source for this but I'm pretty confident that music from the 70s is way more popular today than music from the 20s was in the 70s. Nobody my age finds rock music unfamiliar, despite the popularity of other stuff.

@@dremoralorde5215 I think it’s unfair to expect Martin to be connected with people our age. There’s probably too few that he interacts with.
You are right about music in the 70s being more popular today than music from the 20s was in the 70s, but that’s because of accessibility and exposure due to technology. You can’t buy your groceries without hearing Zeppelin. People in the 70s weren’t listening to the Duke while they shopped for groceries.
None of my friends find radio-“Dad Rock” or “Arena Rock” unfamiliar, but when I rip out some Rush, Savatage, Steve Vai or even anything off Thunder and Lightening people are shocked.

  • @GandalfGreyhame

While it's true you'll gain a special appreciation for music because you were there when it came out, I think younger people can find appreciation for it in their own way. I'm a 20-year-old guy that listens to a lot of rock, especially from the late 60s and early 70s. I wasn't there when it was released. I've never heard it being played on the radio or had friends recommend it to me. What makes it unique to me is that I discovered it by myself. I remember distinctly how I watched a live performance of Led Zeppelin on youtube when I was 14, and it absolutely blew me away. I remember questioning myself, "where has this type of music been all my life?". Since then, I've used the internet to find the music I enjoy, using everything from music-streaming services to forums and youtube channels. And that's what brought me to this channel! I would just like to thank you for the content you make. It has given me so much music to explore and made me see it from a perspective I never would've otherwise. Cheers!

I was just playing Rime of the Ancient Mariner (1984) and I think that was the Swan Song for Heavy Metal itself. That was September 1984 and while cutting edge at the time was obsolete by January 1985 when Ride the Lightning took the world by storm and Thrash Metal took over.

Yeah man! That's a thoughtful list...I think that the only band that we would share on our top 10 bands list would be The Doors: The Doors. I wore the cassette tape out of my first copy of it. That was a brilliant album. The Who: Who's Next is fantastic too....as is Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Other than their hits, the band you've listed that I'm least familiar with would be Boston. I really don't know a lot by that band.

If you love sticky fingers then you need to listen to teenage head by the flamin groovies. Mick was on record stating that teenage head is better than sticky. Came out in 1971 and to me, I like head slightly better due to the punk edge it has over sticky. Anyway, check it out now. You will be thankful

I've got friends and family who would look at me like I'm crazy for listening to two guys I don't know talk about what their favorite albums are. Or whatever the subjective topic that's being covered.
But I learn a lot about bands I'm either unaware of, or ones I might've brushed off back in the day and never dug deeper into.
It helps that Pete and Martin are not just a wealth of information, but, in my opinion, humble and good natured about what they share.

@@beetlebum7760 Honestly I feel like "Pet Sounds" should be in any music lover's top 10. Brian imo stands in the tradition of the great arrangers at Capitol of the 50s like Gordon Jenkins or Nelson Riddle, but he took it in a totally new direction, when he married the orchestral and big band palette of the 50s with the sound and instrumentarium of the surf bands of the early 60s, then added a bit of Spectoresque production and topped it all off with those Barbershop inspired vocal harmonies, that highlighted the once in a lifetime gorgeous vocal blend of his bros and company. That's just such a super cool eclectic combination of styles, just as cool and eclectic as the combination of instruments he used liked bowed double bass and electric bass, or organ and accordion, or harpsichord and ukulele, etc...
And I haven't even mentioned yet his gifts as a song composer and writer of melody. No wonder Macca calls "Pet Sounds" his favourite album ever.

Albums that he almost assuredly would not give 10/10s to today. I have a ton of lesser known albums from reading that book that he gave 9s and 10s to that really blew my mind. All metal albums btw. I have a feeling if he wrote that book today and I was a relatively fledgling metalhead, those albums would pass me by. And that’s a shame.

@@steelerfreak1977 He has always said that our tastes evolve, which I think we're all aware of. I don't know if I've ever heard him say that he would downgrade an album, but I think I've heard him say that he'd probably give "The Number of the Beast" and "Appetite for Destruction" 8s instead of their original 7s.
He still loves all of those old bands, especially More (which I find rather bland, honestly), as I've heard him mention them several times. Now Overdrive...that album smokes. Especially side two. Think I'll use that one tomorrow. Thanks for the reminder.

Dave, I've got a great idea for a show topic for you guys! How about one on the GREATEST albums that "never were." I'm thinking "Smile" by the Beach Boys, or the failed Yes "Paris Sessions," or the Kansas album that fell apart after Steve Walsh left, etc... Many of these are extant in rare demo tracks, some have seen bits and pieces find the light of day, but it would be cool to cover some of these as many represent "Holy Grails" to collectors. I believe ELO intended both "Time" and "Secret Messages" to be double albums, but they were truncated into single albums. There were quite a few other albums that fell apart in the studio as band members fought and broke up, resulting in abandoned projects.

I am like Pete (& The Clash) with that group. I don’t like most of what I have heard. Earlier this year I was in Los Angeles for a few weeks and listened to a radio station that played a lot of new wave & synth era stuff. Most I heard i liked, but I found that every time a song came on that I didn’t like, it was almost always DM. It became became even kind of funny to me as sometimes I would see the artist name right away on the car radio digital display but often it happened that I would be driving and think to myself “I don’t care much for this song before looking at the radio display only to then look and see that it was DM).
I know there are plenty of people who think they are wonderful and that’s great. I’m just not one of them. I don’t intend any ill will with this comment. We all like what we like.

About a year ago I did something similar to this, where I made up a list and series of reviews called "38 Albums That Changed My Life." So here is the list - AC/DC - Highway To Hell, Al Stewart - Past, Present & Future, Alan Parsons Project - Tales Of Mystery & Imagination, Alice Cooper - Love It To Death, Ambrosia - Ambrosia, Beatles - Rubber Soul, Black Sabbath - Paranoid, Blind Faith - Blind Faith, Blue Oyster Cult - Blue Oyster Cult, Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run, Cat Stevens - Tea For The Tillerman, Cream - Disraeli Gears, David Bowie - Aladdin Sane, Deep Purple - Deep Purple, Edward Bear - Bearings, Elton John - Tumbleweed Connection, Fairport Convention - Liege & Lief, Fleetwood Mac - Bare Trees, Gordon Lightfoot - Did She Mention My Name, Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow, Killing Joke - Killing Joke, Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin 2, Marty Robbins - Gunfighter Ballads & Trail Songs, Max Webster - Max Webster, Moody Blues - On The Threshold Of A Dream, Nick Drake - Bryter Layter, Pink Floyd - Meddle, Queen - Queen 1, Quicksilver Messenger Service - Happy Trails, The Ramones - Ramones, Roxy Music - Country Life, Strawbs - Hero & Heroine, The Doors - The Doors, The Runaways - The Runaways, The Ventures - Play Telstar, Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything, Wishbone Ash - Argus, Yes - Fragile.
