I love composing on the pyramid using the midi fx, and this device definitely looks like a step up. I expect that the weird low limit on patterns will be fixed, it is probably because the pattern screen can’t scroll yet. But if 8 patterns is not enough , you could not only think about using 2 tracks for 1 instrument, but also about using 2 projects that are very similar and switching between them. Not only does that give you 16 patterns instead of 8, it also gives you 2 master control tracks and 2 project keys. So tons of new creative options!
Great idea. I can live with the cons. True the Hapax doesn't have a sampler/synth like the Deluge, but neither have velocity sensitive pads. So if you really want to use the Hapax for synths, Ableton, and mix and match what gear your sequencing, like I'm aiming to do, this seems like a winner.
same here and I have tons of synths and samplers already and need a central sequencer brain and Cirklon costs more and has a long 3 year wait. I bought a Hapax this week so will update firmware on it.
Thanks for the review. I have the Pyramid and I primarily use it for idea sketches. I really enjoy it, so I might pick up this a few firmware updates later. Too bad they cheaped out on velocity sensitive pads and aftertouch.
This looks great. Lately I've come to realize my dream hardware sequencer would be a sequencer/mixer combo, with at least 8 inputs, external sends, and the ability to sequence the instruments and then bring them back in for effects+mixing. Much like the circuit tracks, mc707, octatrack, etc can do with 2-4 tracks , but with 8 inputs. Anything like that out there? Ideally it wouldn't even be a groovebox; I'd really just love these standalone sequencers to start adding audio inputs.
I got mine recently (#8) and I agree with your assessment that it's very easy to get up and running with. A few notable omission in my opinion 1) lack of destructive rotate to step editing (Ala shift + arrow keys on an Elektron box) 2) inability to specify a gate length to a note in step, notably when you get sub-1 step lengths you're limited on divisors (1/2, 1/4) but I wouldn't mind a single step with a 75% gate length
Regarding the early bugs: My Hermod has not crashed, like, ever, so I have absolute confidence that Squarp will fix those in due time. They will have to, because I should be getting a Hapax from the second batch. 😊
I instantly ordered a Hapax after the RMR video, sequencers are finally moving in the right direction, just need a hexagonal grid for isomorphic keyboards bc it makes them infinitely better than grids or even piano layout. And that's coming from a jazz pianist of 20 years and owner of 3 Elektron boxes, the perfect sequencer doesn't exist yet, but this is getting close.
Thanks for the review, great work! This looks pretty much like the perfect sequencer for my needs, will get one for sure. Something I wish they would add is a way to preview notes in step mode, so you don’t actually have to play the sequence to hear the notes you enter.
great review! Thank you! Wish you spent a bit more time on MPE sequencing. But I definitely now feel like I know what I need to know to make a purchase decision. Great as always!
The key aspect to this as with a few others is the randomisation. This is such a creative aspect of the machine. The force is due an upgrade and I'm praying this feature can be added.
Great review as usual. Really appreciate the methodical approach and the indexing so I can go back and review specific sections. The hardware sequencer market place is getting crowded all of a sudden and I feel that the Hapax has a top tier seat. It is also the first with MPE and I am willing to bet this will inspire other manufacturers to follow because if they do not support MPE they are missing an opportunity to allow artists a whole other avenue for artistic expression. Plus MPE is the current stage of midi evolution. Anyway I digress, your reviews help us to make intelligent purchase choices and refresh our minds when we acquire the item in question, thanks and keep up the great work we appreciate you.
I agree, this definitely inspires the market, and I’m glad it doesn’t have too much overlap with the deluge, as this excels in the live morphing and controlling of outboard gear. The deluge also records mpe information, but the effects on the hapax are next level. If I didn’t already have samplers on hand, I wouldn’t know which to get. The deluge is more mature in various areas-even sequencing-but Squarp is a promising company with precedent.
@@aqueous5099 If I were just starting out the Deluge would be top of my list but I have too many synths as it is and my goal is morphing and controlling all that outboard gear using a user friendly work flow, this is especially important with complex setups. Perhaps the old axiom "Better is the enemy of good enough" applies in my specific case. Appreciate your insights though.
@@aqueous5099 Since MPE eats up midi channels, I think the limited number of midi outputs on the Deluge would frustrate me when using it with external MPE synths.
When I watch these sequencer vids, they just strengthen my resolve that the Novation Tracks is nearly perfect and I need not look further. It’s not perfect but there is yet to be a major update and so it can only get more awesome. It’s genius? Simplicity - just the good stuff that matters:Velocity sensitivity, 8 control knobs, quick pattern/project creation, probability adjustment and oh ya, it has a groovy little drum machine built in and ample modulation for those drums.
If your going to give me an array of pads they have to be velocity sensitive. So within 2 minutes of the video, it was game over my consideration to buy. I
I found the Deluge because I was looking for a grid-based sequencer. I wasn't necessarily looking for all of the other features. So I'm curious how this compares, not to the Deluge in it's entirety, but to just the Deluge's sequencer. Watching the workflow portion of this video twice, even with the screens, this doesn't necessarily seem easier where adjusting envelopes, and adding automation & effects are concerned. But I will say, being able to adjust velocity graphically on the drums is pretty awesome. That's exactly what I need to do for my current track, and I'm not looking forward to the tediousness of it
I’ve had two Deluges and sold my second one for the Hapax. I didn’t care for the sound engine of the Deluge and the Hapax provided much more feedback for what I wanted. I’d say imputing notes is definitely easier on the Hapax. You can set up the lengths and velocities before putting the notes in and just press away. Big thing too is the ratchets which you have to do per step on the Deluge but it saves that info until you change it, or you can do it per step if that’s how you prefer. Obviously doing things like adjusting envelopes or reverb amounts was super easy in the deluge with the built in engine but it was more difficult when sequencing external gear. Now you can add instrument definitions and have all of that information saved for each of your synths, not sure if they ever added that to deluge, pretty sure they didn’t. And being able to see the automation curves is much easier and precise for editing than twisting the gold knobs and hoping you got it right. Deluge is a jack of all trades, master of none. It does a lot of things but it doesn’t really do anything better than any device dedicated for that task. It used to be the king of sequencers, 5 years ago, but now there’s some stiff competition in dedicated sequencers and it’s fallen behind. That said, it did lay the ground work for things like the Oxi One and Hapax.
@@ChumpyDumps To be clear, are you saying the Hapax is the superior seqeuncer? I want a sequencer. Not a groovebox/sampler that has a sequencer built into it.
@@ErwinSchrodinger64 yes, I’ve used quite a few of the modern sequencers out there including the Deluge for 5 years and the Hapax since launch. The Hapax can do everything the Delugr can do and more. It’s got 4x the midi channels which means you can control up to 64 midi devices with it as opposed to 16 on the deluge, and it’s got cool things like the midi envelope and LFOs which effectively expand how much modulation your synth has. Only have one LFO on your Minifreak? Well, now you can have 8 with the Hapax. Plus instrument definitions which allow you to easily automate CC parameters without having to always have the synths manual on hand. Hapax is definitely better at being a control hub for your studio.
@@ChumpyDumps thank you for your reply. I've watched so many videos on the matter. I have a Toraiz Squid, which is an incredible sequencer, however, Pioneer never supported. Hence, it has a number of bugs that were never corrected. I've read countless reviews on the Hapax. The most negative is not being able to note preview in the sequencer mode. Which I hope is corrected in an update. I just don't seem to understand how most people say the Deluge is more powerful sequencer compared to the Hapax which is nothing but a sequencer. I'm going to order it today. Our of curiosity, are there any other sequencers you find to be very good?
@@ErwinSchrodinger64 I am an elektron guy so I do love all the Elektron sequencer but it’s definitely more challenging to work with when it comes to polyphonic sounds / chords than a grid sequencer like Deluge or Hapax. I have the Polyend Tracker which is great but definitely an acquired taste. Ive owned MPC Live and Maschine+, both are great for their internal engines but I had lots of jitter issues working with external gear. I have an Oxi One currently but im going to sell it, for me it’s just a bit too limited especially since I already own the Hapax but I was curious about the Oxi One. It only allows for 4 midi CC parameters to be automated where im not sure the Hapax has a limit, if it does I haven’t reached it. It is a cool device if you need battery powered though. I have an OP-Z which is a lot of fun as well but it does have a smaller form factor and it has similar issues as the elektron sequencer when working with chords/ polyphony. I used to own an M8, really cool but also a tracker so an acquired taste. Big problem for me with that one was there wasn’t a performance element to it, like you can’t finger drum in notes without more equipment so it becomes a bit of a chore to program on it. I like to at least input notes by playing them in and then edit within a tracker and it wasn’t really possible with the M8 out of the box. But yeah, I have too much shit lol. The Deluge is great as a stand-alone groove box but it definitely has tons of limitations compared to newer boxes coming out. The only thing that it really beats the Hapax at is the arranger mode but even that only works best in the context of the all-in-one groovebox. The automation lanes and editing and midi Fx alone beat out the Deluge. And yeah, it’s not all sunshine and roses. I do hope they get a note preview working soon but it’s not the worst thing in the world. There’s also some workflow oddities like setting the note length, I think the Deluge and Oxi One do a better job at that. But Hapax is just really a beast and the closest obtainable thing to a Cirklon (which I haven’t tried)
Hi thanks for the review. Interesting but at almost $1000.00 I would opt out and look into MPC which has more bang for the buck. MPC One has 128 midi tracks, with control voltage velocity and after touch,128 audio tracks using the computer, 8 in standalone mode, 128 pads velocity and pressure sensitive, touch screen. built in effects and instruments with automation and XY pad the options list goes on. Amazing device and it's less cost. Live runs on its own battery.
Yeah, Hapax looks pretty nice but... I got my Akai Force brand new for less, and it's basically a whole Ableton-style DAW in hardware form. It's awfully hard to compete against Akai's current product line.
I agree with all the above but MPC range does not have midi effects. For example, in terms of randomisation, MPCs are extremely limited in comparison to the Hapax. It's depends what you are looking for. Since 2.10, drum programs have some degree of randomisation but it's still rather limited.
@@MrRozzwell Yes, if you want to program loops with randomization and trig conditions and other generative techniques, don't use an Akai device. That's not what they're built for. If you want to compose and play songs more traditionally, like play instruments and arrange clips into a song quickly or even real-time, that's where a Force or a DAW really shines. I tried for years to make songs on gear designed for the generative method, but never got along with it well. It always felt to me like the randomization and trig conditions and stuff were workarounds for not having the features I actually needed. It seemed like a way to make the most of limited resources. That's cool, but I found that the limitations didn't breed creativity; they mostly just made music feel like a chore. So I switched to an Ableton-style workflow, and suddenly was making better songs in a fraction as much time. I'm not trying to say one is better than the other though. The point is that it's important for each person to figure out what kind of tools work best for them. ... and the Hapax is great at what it does, but it's in kind of a specialized niche. So if someone is unsure whether they need it, the answer is probably no. The people who need it already know they need it. And for everyone else, there are other tools available which are probably a better fit.
Not only yet another comprehensive, thorough and excellent review from Ziv but also a great demonstration of the JX-08. Im trying to control my G.A.S and this isn't helping! 😂
When I saw this machine I immediatly tought that this is the kind of design that if the *Deluge* had it from de start. Synthstrom would be... president of the presidents !
Hi Loopop! Great review. Again! The only major thing with Hapax, from my pov, is that I am looking at it as the center for my modular grid (pun intended), and only 4 CV/gate pairs, even disregarding other modulation cvs we might want to use, is a bit lacklustre, no? I mean, we might always add a mutant brain of sorts, to get some notes and CV out of the midi tracks, but I think that Hapax should have a lot more CV/gat/modcv outs. Especially for the price. Comparing even with arturias keystep , hosts a lot more CV options (not to mention all the independent drum gate outs...). I hope they release some sort of interface eurorack module that one can use via it's USB connection or even midi to expand Hapax for more tracks. I mean, 16 tracks but then, 4cv/gate pairs... Do you have any workaround ? Endorphines also has the shuttle Control (?) The one with 16 cvs from one midi, but that's an extra 400 EUR.. Hapax has a lot of power but bottlenecked on the CV interface. I am looking to get one anyway... But damn...
Just get an FH-2 and you will have up to 64 cv/gates in your modular. The upside is: Say you play live with Hapax and modular and you use an FH-2 or similar midi-to-cv. All you need to connect is one usb cable. If you had say 24 jack cables coming out of Hapax, that would be more stuff to manage. I think Squarp made a fine choice.
Adding a mutant brain for $175 makes for 16 gates and 8 CV - an inexpensive approach to expanding via midi. I just bought one in anticipation for the restock next month and can’t wait to get the Hapax sequencing my entire rack.
I wouldn't get this if you're only sequencing eurorack. It's very midicentric. I remember the cv implementation on the pyramid was quite lacklustre, it almost felt like an afterthought.
Please review the new Roland Fantom-0. I am looking for an honest review of the keybed quality, actual sound quality compared to Yamaha MODX and Korg Nautilus, and what has really been cut from the flagship Fantom. Your reviews are always amazing!
Great breakdown. I have been on the Cirklon 2 list for over a year now (18 month wait when signing up), this is tempting, very tempting. However, I think I will wait for Cirklon 2, as its layout/workflow is more in my comfort zone. Still, this made me have to consider reconsidering for a moment. Any hope for an in-depth dive into the Cirklon 2 anytime in the future?
Good review. I have a lot of outboard Music machines like the OT, virus ti, Micobrute 2S, Alpha Base, Blue Marvin and tried to integrate them into an Ableton Live Template. But the problem is the OT (no Midi over USB) and the Microbrute 2S which do not support Programm Changes. The Hapax Seq will not solve that problem too.
I recently got rid of Digitakt because of the lack of support for stereo samples, and no song mode and looper feature. I want to upgrade to OT because of this. Are you saying that because the OT doesn’t do MIDI over USB, you won’t be able to sequence it with the Hapax? Will it still clock to the Hapax though? Will you still be able to integrate it into your Ableton template in a different way? Thanks
Just got my new Squarp Hapax. So how do we setup a new project template to sequence multiple synthesizer tracks assigned to Hapax. Example Track 1 - Oberheim OB X8 preset A (MIDI A out from Hapax to OB X8 MIDI IN) Track 2 - Oberheim OB X8 preset B (MIDI A out from Hapax to OB X8 MIDI IN) Track 3- Virus TI2 bank a patch 1 (MIDI B out from Hapax to Virus MIDI IN) Track 4 - Virus TI2 bank b patch 1 (MIDI B out from Hapax to Virus MIDI IN) Track 5- Elektron Digitone (MIDI C out from Hapax to Digitone MIDI IN) Track 6- modular drums over cv/gates How would I do this on the Hapax? Also since the Virus and OB X8 are multi timbral poly synths, I want to sequence multiple parts from each synth.
Hello.. NIce video. I only wonder 2 things at that moment : 1) if there will ever be an arranger view, and 2) if ever they will add more tracks with some shift combo. I would pair it with my deluge and make it my primary if only those would be possible
Thanks Ziv. I really liked your suggestion of the "transpose track" being updated to a "chord track" similar to the Oxi One or the NDLR. Do you happen to know if this is something the developers are planning on implementing?
This makes me almost wanna give up (after 4 years) on waiting for Cirklon. I could pair this with my Deluge for a lot of sequencing power. Not as expansive as 64 channels of Cirklon but yea…amazing feature set
How well does it handle sequences outside of 4/4 time signature? I want to be able to create a song that goes from 4/4 to 15/8 and then to 3/4. Also you said it does not support slide, but does it handle pitch bend events okay?
When using Generatr on melodic tracks, I saw you added new notes on top of existing notes (~29:45). How did you do that? I've been trying to figure out how on my unit, but can't replicate it. Thanks!
That is odd! Perhaps we're both seeing it wrong because it for some reason it felt like it was adding notes, but now that I tried it with fewer notes it does indeed replace them, so, probably just my mistake...
You are the King man ! Can the CV tracks compose chords ? Can the transpose track ( 16 ) transpose CV tracks ? Can the grid automation control Cv tracks too ?
Thanks! (1) No, only 1 CV gate pair per track unless I missed something... (2) Transposing CV should work! I didn't try it... (3) yes, you can automate CV
Thanks a lot for your great review ❤️ I agree that one important missing feature is track delay, but a lot of Hardware sequencers, like deluge/akai/maschine didn’t have that too or I’m wrong ???
Thanks! You're not wrong, I'm actually not familiar with any sequencer that does this, but as I was sequencing a combination of hardware and software instruments in this video the latency really bothered me, and since this sequencer raises the bar for everyone, why not raise it higher ;)
@@loopop absolutely 👍🏻 and hopefully some developer make it possible and recognise, that track delay is unique in moment for their product. I wonder that no one of the big companies have that. Cause every external midi hardware have more or less a little latency. Maybe polyend with the next product make it better 🙏🏻
Hello sir, thanks for your content, it's very interesting. I do own an hapax and i normally use it with external instruments. But i was wondering how can you send cc to ableton? I mean, how you do you use, for example CC 15 to change the cutoff of the instrument in Live? I'd like to try that and would be nice to know how to.. Thanks
The thing that drove me crazy (and to sell) my pyramid was notes live recorded on step one getting quantised at the end of the pattern. Did they fix this?
you lost me at "the notes don't play while entering a pattern".. I can see this may be a feature when playing live and prepping a new pattern, this definitively is something that should be a button combination for "preview"....thx for great review
Hi is it possible to move all tracks simultaneously from one chord (or degree within a given scale) to another with a single touch of a button in real time like the OXi one can manage? So say in A Phrygian from ii-v-i for example
No, sorry there are too many such comparisons to be made but if you watch my Deluge 3 video you'll know everything I know. I might do an update now that there's an OLED version but can't say when
I'm looking for a good sequencer, that cost about 1k or less. I really like this, but they're on back order. I have limited patience. I'm stuck right now. I like the Pyramid, Torso, Engine, Octatrak, NDLR, and I'm probably missing some. I'm okay with used in excellent or mint condition. It seems that the chip shortage has caused a lot of smaller companies to end up having limited supply. I'm also in the market for a midi router, and the one I want seems to have a limited supply. I digress.. I think the Pyramid is going to be the one I get. I already own a Beatstep Pro, but I want something that goes deeper.. pause.. haha. I was looking at the Polyend Play, and plan on getting one, but from what I gathered, I don't think it can sequence in the same way that the others do. I may be wrong. The Polyend Seq is also interesting, but I'm not sure if it's comparable to the other sequencers. I want something that's easy, fun, intuitive, and fairly limitless within reason. I would greatly appreciate anyone's feedback. Just to be clear, I'm going to be running this with a midi/usb router into hardware and software.
You’ll need to record it because currently you can’t export midi files, but I wouldn’t be surprised if at some point that functionality is added because they used to have it in their previous product
In piano roll view can you scroll a step at a time? or less than a page at a time? One of the things that drives me crazy about the deluge is that it does not allow this, or at least I don't know how to do this. So if you are trying to write a melody that is longer than one page, you lose all context/bearing/orientation when you go to the next page. Zooming in and out to try to accomplish this is a mind warp and takes way too much cognitive load.
More cons: - Only 16 tracks. Cmon, this device has 4 midi outputs. So it should have 64 tracks as minimum (16 channels * 4 buses). But of course it should support more tracks (maybe for USB midi hubs later). - Only 8 rows for the session view. Seriously? Why I can’t create a long list of rows and scroll them up and down (like in Push). - 32 bars per clip. So I can’t create a long background clip? Why these software restrictions? BTW, thanks Loopop for another great video 👍
Thanks! Just saying those facts are mentioned in the video and cons (except the 32 bars which is only in the main video) but of course you're welcome to emphasize them here too :)

@@_c_y_p_3 One Drum Machine, eg. Analog Rytm require 16 channels (1 channel per instrument). One multitembral synthesizer (eg Blofeld) can take up to 16 channels (1 channel per layer). Plus, you may want to handle VSTs from a DAW.
Can I sent run/stop and reset signal from the midi out of the Hapax, configured as Din Sync, to the clock input/reset of Pamela’s New Workout, using a Din Sync to CV adapter? Should work is my guess but I never tried this before.
Did they fix the pad response? I sold my pyramid because the pads would trigger adjacent pads or not trigger at all - deal breaker in live improv situations
@@loopop particularly I had issues with the 2 colored function pads farthest to the left (cant remember their names). You had to hold one down to do quick-track selection, but the pad wouldn't hold down, or would trigger the other one, then you'd press the step button and instead of picking a track, you'd mess up a pattern or play a wrong note live or something. Can't recall exactly as it was a while ago, but 100% bothered me as a more live-performance focused electronic musician. I may be misremembering the functions, but that was the experience generally.
Is there a software app that rivals the generative possibilities of this box? I like what it does, but the price is crazy. Can Ableton Live do something like this?
yes, Ableton Live has both scene and clip based sequencing capabilities as well as generative MIDI effects (I'm not sure it has all the ones this has, but it has plenty others, and if you get Live Suite (also expensive....) with maxforlive you can do pretty much anything. Of course it's not as hands on unless you get push
@@loopop Thank you so much. I'll take that any day of the week. I just saw there are extra goodies for this type of thing in the ableton 12 version, so this will give me the push I needed to upgrade. I'd love one of these devices, but I just purchased an jupiter XM so I need to take it easy. :) lol Thanks for the help and I love your videos. Keep rocking.
Yeah just too expensive compared to Force / Deluge for me, a couple of features I would like in there for sure, but no at over $1k. You did a great job of summarizing the pro's and con's !
I have the force, dont like it. What i do like is de usb on the force. I can connect my acces virus with usb midi, the force recognizes it and then I can use the 16 midi channels. Is that possible with the hapax?
i am wondering about the 4x cv outputs, which they advertised with 16bit depth. from what i see everything seems to run on midi; how can one take adavantage of the extra resolution on these? or is it just the dac that interpolates? also i would have hoped for a non dented encoders just; since they removed the trackpad as well there is no way to record non-dented.
Interesting question. I think midi can be higher res than 128 with some clever math chicanery... can't remember what it's called, midiplus or something. I think the pyramid supported this. Don't think it's 16 bit though. Honestly, I would get pams pro workout for euro modulation and use the hapax cv for melodies. I guess some extra cv modulation can't hurt but Hapax LFOs will never compete with pams.
For this to be an alternative to Cirklon with a eurorack set up you would need to convert the midi out to triggers (and more cv). Is there a simple hardware solution?
the most baffling thing about this is "each project contains 16 instrument tracks and EIGHT patterns per track" !! Eight patterns !! what were they thinking. It went from an instabuy to a massive head scratcher. what a weird limitation.
@@RonCavagnaro I have a deluge and looking at this. Are they a good pair? Any downsides? Also anything in the elektron range which compares as a pair for the deluge? I want to keep the deluge in my setup, it's great!
A bit hard to justify the price point when compared to the competition. I’ll revisit this once the product has matured. Too many common sense features are missing right now🤷🏾♂️
I was really looking forward fot this video! I'm about to pull the trigger between the Hapax and the Oxi One, and I was sold on the intro demo song already! (that's exactly the kind of music I'm trying to make) I've got a specific question about the transpose track, as I would know if it can listen to external midi (like the Pyramid does) ... And I'm with you Ziv that would be cool to have chord/traspose/follow mode like the Oxi One/NDLR, I asked you about that very thing on IG indeed, so thanks for mentioning it loud and clear in the "cons". Looking forward for the new Roland boutiques review! That JX seems to sound really fat!
Fast forward 5 months and finally an Hapax landed on my desktop. I've played with it just a couple of hours and I can say that it's really really well thought out. I'm coming from a Pyramid so maybe the Squarp thinking is already in me, but the Hapax it's really straightforward to understand and use. They also did a good job with firmware so far, adding a bunch of new stuff, including the subject of my old comment: a chord transpose/follower mode for the master transpose track. Despite the Oxi One having had a ton of new features down the road, and probably a more mature firmware/workflow from the initial release, I'm really happy to have gotten the Squarp box. Nice to came here and have a re-watch. Your videos Ziv are so well made that will serve as tutorials too, once you got the thing in front. Thanks for you awesome work, really. Cheers
I have a Pyramid and I feel no desire for this, also this is new and will be full of bugs for at least a year, as you said in the "pro and cons". Pyramid is "done"
I dont like the concept of the whole thing to be honest. For me that is like a laptop but with a bit unusualy controls. things like the keystep pro make much more sense, because they are designed for live performances and jamming, but this this doesnt look like its very good in playing live. the review was still fun to watch though :P
It seems to me one of the most live jamming oriented sequencer on the market today. 2 projects structure with seamless transition, easy pattern launching structure, 8 assignable knobs per track... I can see playing with it without even touching the synths, and with a bunch of pre-assembled projects on the sd card you can flow music for hours
@@CiabaMusic hm idk maybe we have a different understanding what playing live is, but for me playing live mostly means to actually play the melodies live and not to take pre-made patterns and just twist some parameters at the synth. The 2 project feature has its charm, I'll admit that, but also that's what I meant with its basically just a computer. I don't even mean that in a downplaying way, I often jam just with my computer and a midi keyboard which works really well, I just don't really see how this sequencer can enhance that esperience.
@@donit. to each his own I guess, but the arranger and the dual projects screams livejamming all over to me. Given also the immediacy to put down melody lines and drum patterns, and to store them in the said arranger for building tracks on the go. Mayne I'm missing some more advanced machines out there for live playing, but the Hapax to me seems way more hands on in respect to my Octatrack/Pyramid actual setup, and that's one of the main reasons I ordered one. Peace 🙏😜
I bought the Pyramid based on your review. Looks like I'll be buying a Hapax now!
That's what I did too. We should find a way to filter loopop videos! 😂
Thanks for the review. I have the Pyramid and I primarily use it for idea sketches. I really enjoy it, so I might pick up this a few firmware updates later. Too bad they cheaped out on velocity sensitive pads and aftertouch.
Great video thanks again!!! You helped tons when I was struggling early on with this gear!
My pleasure!
I second this, a "perfect" sequencer that is also an audio interface would be the dream, an actual DAW in a box.
Akai Force with external USB audio interface might do for you.
Yea mpc or force with extra inputs
MPC one with a USB mixer to add more in/outs. Think that's as close as we have for now.
Roland mx-1
Very much look forward to your Polyend groovebox review and seeing how it compares
First Time I buy something before having watched loopop review. Great as usual btw!
I got mine recently (#8) and I agree with your assessment that it's very easy to get up and running with. A few notable omission in my opinion
1) lack of destructive rotate to step editing (Ala shift + arrow keys on an Elektron box)
2) inability to specify a gate length to a note in step, notably when you get sub-1 step lengths you're limited on divisors (1/2, 1/4) but I wouldn't mind a single step with a 75% gate length
It should be noted I really enjoy it, but just a few bits of spit + polish that would be nice to have
Re 1 - have you tried holding ALL and pressing the right and left arrows?
@@loopop OH! That's it, thanks!
Regarding the early bugs: My Hermod has not crashed, like, ever, so I have absolute confidence that Squarp will fix those in due time. They will have to, because I should be getting a Hapax from the second batch. 😊
Yes, as I mentioned in the video I've not experienced these issues with Squarp's Hermod or Pyramid
Thanks! Squarp said MPE sequencing is going to get revamped to that's the part that would have gotten old the quickest...
This looks like a really cool product, although I would have liked to see velocity sensitivity and aftertouch on the pads. Thanks loopop!
@M Castile Well velocity sensitive with an option to disable. If they were, I would own it and use it like a standalone Push.
The key aspect to this as with a few others is the randomisation. This is such a creative aspect of the machine.
The force is due an upgrade and I'm praying this feature can be added.
check out torso t1, its like this but you dont have to look
Just got the JX-08. I love it.
Roland's MC707 is also a very capable competitor. All channels can be used for either audio or MIDI, and the ease of use is unparalleled.
I love the sounds in the MC707 but love the isomorphic keyboard on the Hapax

@@zdravkodimitrov I was considering it
I found the Deluge because I was looking for a grid-based sequencer.
Ok. I'm sold. Just ordered one. It's perfect for my purposes.
What a master that little outro was simple but awesome :)
Almost Push ... at more money :) Thanks for the wrap-up in depth, LP!
Not only yet another comprehensive, thorough and excellent review from Ziv but also a great demonstration of the JX-08. Im trying to control my G.A.S and this isn't helping! 😂
Great review !
Is it just me, or is loopop also calling it 'Hotbox'? Great review, definitely buying a Squarp Hotbox this year, if I can get one.
Thanks! I wasn’t, but now that I re-watch the video it sure sounds like it :)
Fantastic job describing this interesting device.
It's truly incredibile how YAMAHA RS7000 still today the most complete and advanced instrument in this category....no-one speaks about it...👍
When I saw this machine I immediatly tought that this is the kind of design that if the *Deluge* had it from de start.
But damn...
Thanks! No magic workaround I can think of unfortunately other than a MIDI to CV interface
Hermod+ ?
Another informative video, thanks! Where did you talk about MPE? Did I miss it?That’s something that really interests me!
Thanks! In the setup section. I didn't demo it at length because that functionality is going to be expanded according to the manual
Please review the new Roland Fantom-0. I am looking for an honest review of the keybed quality, actual sound quality compared to Yamaha MODX and Korg Nautilus, and what has really been cut from the flagship Fantom. Your reviews are always amazing!
wow, such an amazing machine
Very tempted, but I’m so used lately with my Polyend Seq with which I can arrange whole songs despite the limitations
Well i've been on the waiting list for 3 years and counting ffs

Thanks
@@Introspeckle The OT sends or receive midi clock and prog changes, but only via midi in/ out. The USB port is only for sample import and updates
Just got my new Squarp Hapax. So how do we setup a new project template to sequence multiple synthesizer tracks assigned to Hapax.
Example
Track 1 - Oberheim OB X8 preset A (MIDI A out from Hapax to OB X8 MIDI IN)
Track 2 - Oberheim OB X8 preset B (MIDI A out from Hapax to OB X8 MIDI IN)
Track 3- Virus TI2 bank a patch 1 (MIDI B out from Hapax to Virus MIDI IN)
Track 4 - Virus TI2 bank b patch 1 (MIDI B out from Hapax to Virus MIDI IN)
Track 5- Elektron Digitone (MIDI C out from Hapax to Digitone MIDI IN)
Track 6- modular drums over cv/gates
How would I do this on the Hapax? Also since the Virus and OB X8 are multi timbral poly synths, I want to sequence multiple parts from each synth.
Hello.. NIce video.
I only wonder 2 things at that moment : 1) if there will ever be an arranger view, and 2) if ever they will add more tracks with some shift combo. I would pair it with my deluge and make it my primary if only those would be possible
Thanks! I really don’t know about their future plans, please ask the company and if you get an answer let us know!
On the way to get one 😂.
Side question, do all your gears go thru a mixer and then to computer or something in order to record everything ?
Thanks Ziv. I really liked your suggestion of the "transpose track" being updated to a "chord track" similar to the Oxi One or the NDLR. Do you happen to know if this is something the developers are planning on implementing?
Thanks! I'm not sure but I think they just did in a recent firmware update, I didn't have time to check it yet...
@@loopop Just had a look at the v1.10 update from 10 days ago. Looks like it has been added as the "match chords" feature 👍
This makes me almost wanna give up (after 4 years) on waiting for Cirklon. I could pair this with my Deluge for a lot of sequencing power. Not as expansive as 64 channels of Cirklon but yea…amazing feature set
Would you recommend the Oxi over the Hapax? I can not decide what to choose for my little rack :)
Not particularly, each have their pros and cons, it's not an easy decision
I wish you could adjust the length of the notes like the Deluge does
Beautiful play out.
How well does it handle sequences outside of 4/4 time signature? I want to be able to create a song that goes from 4/4 to 15/8 and then to 3/4. Also you said it does not support slide, but does it handle pitch bend events okay?
Can the hapax load standard .mid files for patterns? Would be an easy way to move midi data from the computer to the sequencer.
It can now.
This projecttransition thing is great. But how can u do this with for example one volca sample?
Thanks a lot for your great review ❤️
I agree that one important missing feature is track delay, but a lot of Hardware sequencers, like deluge/akai/maschine didn’t have that too or I’m wrong ???
@M Castile for sure!
I'm guessing most people who use a hardware sequencer's aren't trying to sequence VST's and hardware synths at the same time.
Cirklon does this.

I've never used the Cirklon

Which other sequencers have the ability to interpolate automation ?
Is Simon Kallweit working for them now? 😁
The thing that drove me crazy (and to sell) my pyramid was notes live recorded on step one getting quantised at the end of the pattern.
Did they fix this?
Hapax or oxi one or polyend play?
Everything you criticized is just a point away from a update.
8 months later, have they done this? Just curious because I'm in the market for a hardware sequencer
ohhh so you need external sounds for it to work ok got it. This could be good to use to perform live.
you lost me at "the notes don't play while entering a pattern".. I can see this may be a feature when playing live and prepping a new pattern, this definitively is something that should be a button combination for "preview"....thx for great review
2.0 has addressed this. It’s an amazing device.
Hi is it possible to move all tracks simultaneously from one chord (or degree within a given scale) to another with a single touch of a button in real time like the OXi one can manage?
So say in A Phrygian from ii-v-i for example
I would also like to know!
@@Bavinckovic It is i have one now

Is it easy to get MIDI from Hapax into your DAW via record or drag and drop?
You’ll need to record it because currently you can’t export midi files, but I wouldn’t be surprised if at some point that functionality is added because they used to have it in their previous product
In piano roll view can you scroll a step at a time? or less than a page at a time? One of the things that drives me crazy about the deluge is that it does not allow this, or at least I don't know how to do this. So if you are trying to write a melody that is longer than one page, you lose all context/bearing/orientation when you go to the next page. Zooming in and out to try to accomplish this is a mind warp and takes way too much cognitive load.
Any word on tempo automation? That’s my only (but serious) dealbreaker here
no support for it to my knowledge
Can i ask you please: what are things the Five12 can do, that tha Hapax can't? Can the Five12 maybe easier do different settings per step? thank you!

How does this compare to the Pyramid? Is it an evolution of that device, or a completely different thing?
It's an evolution I think - there are still some things Pyramid can do that this can't (watch my overview) but this is much more user friendly IMHO
More cons:
- Only 16 tracks.
Sometimes limitations are a good thing. Squarp will no doubt offer firmware updates which should resolve some of this.

Adding one velocity sensitive pad would’ve solved the velocity problem just like they did on tr8s
this looks super interesting but the lack of arranger kills me. It totally looks capable of it
For the chord modifiers (e.g. adding sus2 or 6/9), are you still constrained to 3 or 4 notes per chord?
Did they fix the pad response? I sold my pyramid because the pads would trigger adjacent pads or not trigger at all - deal breaker in live improv situations
I didn't experience that on pyramid or on hapax - maybe it's how I use it

You had to hold one down to do quick-track selection, but the pad wouldn't hold down, or would trigger the other one, then you'd press the step button and instead of picking a track, you'd mess up a pattern or play a wrong note live or something. Can't recall exactly as it was a while ago, but 100% bothered me as a more live-performance focused electronic musician.
I may be misremembering the functions, but that was the experience generally.
This machine is awesome.

Can you change the degree of all outputs within a scale on the fly like NDLR?
I guess some extra cv modulation can't hurt but Hapax LFOs will never compete with pams.
when use this one over the Pyramid?
umm, you said you would link videos to generators and midi effect chains - am i missing smt?:))
No just took me time to add it! Done :) it's my generative series which I hope you've seen!
@@loopop yeah i did, great work. You had few great entries with Pigments, but also Digitakt and endless loops with small delay:)
For this to be an alternative to Cirklon with a eurorack set up you would need to convert the midi out to triggers (and more cv). Is there a simple hardware solution?
There are many inexpensive Eurorack modules which can convert midi to CV and gate.
Expert Sleepers fh2 is the one
Pro: It's a pretty good sequencer.
Con: It's only a sequencer.
No price available on P.C. Site.
I guess I'll carry on hunting the QY700 on ebay :D Maybe even 3 of them
hey, look for the cheapest way to get a vocoder any ideas?
deluge killer finally! :-)
Wow 😮
the most baffling thing about this is "each project contains 16 instrument tracks and EIGHT patterns per track" !! Eight patterns !! what were they thinking. It went from an instabuy to a massive head scratcher. what a weird limitation.
Each pattern can be 32 bars. Personally I'm using my hapax to record into deluge :)
Like Loopop says: you can send two instrument-tracks to the same device and thus have 16 patterns, or 24, 32...
@@RonCavagnaro
I have a deluge and looking at this. Are they a good pair? Any downsides? Also anything in the elektron range which compares as a pair for the deluge? I want to keep the deluge in my setup, it's great!
I'm fine with 8 patterns. Not looking to create finished tracks with this alone. Finish em in a DAW
Why no velocity sensitivity?
A bit hard to justify the price point when compared to the competition. I’ll revisit this once the product has matured. Too many common sense features are missing right now🤷🏾♂️
What do you mean, you don't have to use cowbell? ;)
Only if you have more than one drum machine connected of course
hello. does it loads midi files\loops ?
not currently
I was really looking forward fot this video!
I'm about to pull the trigger between the Hapax and the Oxi One, and I was sold on the intro demo song already! (that's exactly the kind of music I'm trying to make)
I've got a specific question about the transpose track, as I would know if it can listen to external midi (like the Pyramid does)
To answer my own question, yes it's possible to control the transpose track via external midi controllers
Thanks for answering :) and yes that JX sounds great! No review planned for now - it's really quite simple and sounds great
@@loopop thanks Ziv, I'm leaning more toward the JD indeed... But the JX seems really cool as well.
Oh, and cool demo song in the video 😎
Thanks! I’ll get to the jx as well at some point soon too (not a review but do want to play with it)
Fast forward 5 months and finally an Hapax landed on my desktop.
Quality sound great tune
Peace 🙏😜
@@CiabaMusic hope you have fun with it then :) I think I'm just not in the target group.
@@donit. thanks mate, I hope so! Just out of curiosity, which kind of sequencer/setup are you using?
