  • Masters 65+ 800m World Record Holder - Paul Forbes hits his first hard workout post 800m World Record at Emirates Arena, Glasgow and allows us to share it with the world.
    Paul is a 1:45 800m runner who ran at 3 Commonwealth Games in the 70-80s.
    The workout: 8x300m with 90secs walk/jog recovery.
    In this episode Paul shares insights into how he's been able to stay in such shape at 65yrs of age. Joining the workout is Colin Thomas - lead UK Sport Scientist.

    Think there is a HUGE interest in more elite masters sessions....... There's a big target audience out there that would be super interested and very relatable....

    Back when he was running 1:45, I was running 24 seconds behind that. Now, 40 years later, I'm still 24 sec behind (and hanging on for dear life). Great workout and interview. Mad jealous of the facility and awesome training partners!

    M55 here. I don't think I could clear 2:40 for the 800 right now. Yikes! I echo the sentiments of some of the commenters below in that we'd love to see more masters coverage. I get that it wouldn't be a large proportion of your videos, but a few sprinkled throughout the year would be greatly appreciated. This was a fun watch. Thanks!

    Great to see this. Always a challenge to know if what senior elites do is transferable to masters and other good standard runners. Interesting to note how close his 1:45.66 PB age 26 is on age graded (95.66%) to the 2:15.30 aged 65 (96.99%). So the recent run only just a little "better" on that scale.

    As an addition, Paul yesterday also broke the world indoor record for the M65 1 Mile in 5.04.02. Brilliant.

    Watching his 300M sprints makes me think his 1 mile time is probably around 4:55 To run that at 65 years old is incredible.

    I saw Paul Forbes running the 800 at the UK championships at Meadowbank back in 1978. He finished third behind Sebastian Coe, who won it.

    Great stuff! We have a couple of guys like this (not the same standard though) at my club and they're inspirational. As Matt says, I'd love to be doing this sort of thing when I'm in my mid 60s.

    Curious why most of session have temperature around 10-15C. Do most athletes not train at +20C?

      Matt is currently in the UK where its typically 6-14°c during December.

    That was a truly impressive track session. I know from experience that those early intervals, under pace can cost you late in the workout. Great job throughout the session and thanks for bringing us this content.

    Great to see these heroes grafting. Nice video too. Masters athletes from sprints, combined events through Middle D upto ultras are pushing the envelope and provide some seriously interesting and inspirational data athletically and biologically.

    C'est tellement rare de voir ce genre de vidéos, ce devrait être plus souvent, et avec des femmes ? C'est très motivant pour continuer à courir. J'ai 58 ans et je fais toujours avec plaisir mes 90 km par semaine, cela m'est indispensable

    A bit disappointing. I viewed the video to see Paul running. He’s the world recorder holder for his age group, after all. But the video seemed to devote most attention to the much less interesting recovery & some uninteresting interviewing with the guy in a trac suit.
