  • These kids all traveled solo and had unforgettable experiences. In 2015, a 4-year-old boarded a bus in the middle of the night trying to go on a slushy run. In 2016, JetBlue accidentally flew one mother’s 5-year-old boy to Boston, Massachusetts, instead of New York City. In August, 17-year-old pilot Mack Rutherford completed a solo trip around the world. Inside Edition Digital’s Andrea Swindall has more.

I can speak from experience that it is not uncommon for children in Japan to be independent. Not only because Japan is one of the safest countries in the world: we were taught from an early about “stranger danger “ and boy did they drill it into our heads with those videos and how to avoid being kidnapped. Also we were given small devices where if you pull the string out of it, it would cause a sharp, loud ringing noise that no one can ignore (scaring would be kidnappers and alerting other around you of whats going on)

As a kid, I used to fly alone to NY, Puerto Rico and San Francisco from Denver all the time. Never had an issue. I was instructed what to do and what not to do. I learned how to read my ticket stubs, how to find my gates, how to not leave my bags unaccompanied when going to the bathrooom or getting something to eat, where to go if I got lost or ask questions etc. My parents prepared me for all sorts of situations in case something happened. People need to teach their kids to think independently instead of just relying on the diligence of others.

I was in 1st grade ( so 5 or 6 years old ) when I started "watching myself". When school would end at 3pm, I would walk the 3 blocks to our house, let myself in and wait at home by myself until my father got home around 5pm from work.
In 5th grade when one of my friends Dashon almost got kidnapped while walking home from the same grade school as me, my parents had me get picked up from school by a baby sitter, which i stayed with at her house until my father picked me up after work.
Ironically, the baby sitter's house is where I got hurt. Some skin head kid who was also being watched by the baby sitter. Blocked the driveway and wouldn't let me back into the house. And I tried to sprint passed him, he threw a fist sized rock right at my head. I felt it hit my head, but i think because of the adrenaline, it didn't hurt. But I started bleeding instantly and had a lump for a couple of days.
He got "kicked out" from that baby sitter's house.

I'm learning how to travel solo by train. Last year in the summer holiday, a bit after i turned 13, i was about to go on a 7 and a half hour train journey by myself. Now, the reason this was a challenge, is because of the deutsche bahn just not knowing what the hell they're doing.
I had 50 minutes as a connection time, but because of a fire near the rail, our train had to go a giant detour, landing me at frankfurt 70 minutes late, meaning I missed my train.
Thankfully I could stay in touch with my mom by calling her and together finding alternatives.
After not too long, we found a different train I could go on heading the same direction.
On the way back the first train, which was a 4 hour ride from end to end on a regional express, was on time, and lucky for me, there was a delayed train I could take to save up to an hour, and i could just catch it, which I did.
But then the irony hit as due to a problem with the train we had to wait in the same spot for 55 minutes, meaning i had saved less than two minutes.
    Thankfully, I didn't get lost.
Don't know about flying alone though...

My daughter has always been a very smart person. When she was just 2 years old, she woke up at around 2 am. She gathered 5 of her favorite toys, used a chair to reach the chain lock on the front door.
She walked 5 miles to a playground, started to get tired after playing for a while. She forgot to get the toys she had brought with her. She walked around, trying to find her way home, couldn't find it.
At 4 am, a woman was knocking on my front door. She told me that my daughter was knocking on her door, thinking she had found her way home.
    It scared me so much!
She was a fast learner. I taught her to sing our phone number & address. That's how the woman who brought her back, knew where her home was.
As soon as stores were opened, I went out & bought a hook and eye with spring tension. My daughter could have figured out how to unhook it. Her fingers were not strong enough to pull the spring tension back.

It's not always the airlines. It's the airport. My sister and I have autism and we flew to Newark airport and had on our ticket that we needed assistance they left us and didn't come and get us I went up to a lady working at the desk her patients was out bc she was helping another family then said I'm done after this family and knowing that my sister and I needed help and my sister with her anxiety and her not helping I had to be like look here ( keep in mind my twin sister and I were 20 years old) then did work called my mom on face time and she guided us through the airport. Our mom told us to ask this guy and he was not very helpful he was an airport staff member then we walked up to a pilot and he got his boss over and the boss and the pilot helped us to where we were supposed to be. We had to get on a bus to get on the runway to go to the plane. We got my mom on face time to talk to some stuff that watched over us for the 2 hours that we had to wait. A guy came up to us and he could tell that we were very frustrated and upset and he made it his mission to personally walk us both down to the bus after he helped all of the other people going on the plane with us he walked us all the way down to the bus and told the bus driver and another attendant lady that was riding the bus to make sure we got into the
plane safely and they made us call our mom to tell her that we made it into the plane safely. On the way back at the check in counter with our aunt we told the story and she gave us wheelchair assistance. And she said to tell them that we don't need the wheel chair just help to get to the next gate then to get into the plane they were hesitant at first but I was very firm with my voice and they helped us and we made it back home safely. I think that airport staff need more training for problems like my sister and I's issue.

They were kept togheter, guess the company did this way so kids would tell on each other If someone got lost or something.

I used to travel at lot on my own as kid, short and long distances. Both because my parents were separated and because they saw me as independent enough to go where I wanted to on my own. I only ever had one bad trip on my own, I was about 14 and it was a flight from Dublin to London. It was my return flight and I was served a lot of alcohol (surprise surprise, I wasn’t ID or checked by airport staff or flight attendants despite them already seeing my passport) and I had a meltdown on the plane which included screaming, crying and trying to open doors. It’s a miracle I wasn’t ban from the airline or arrested. I was scared by the turbulence and lights going out also I thought we had landed long before we actually did so I thought we were being held hostage at some point.
It was a short flight so they couldn’t do emergency stops. But my parents didn’t let me fly again on my own till I was 17. I got a real rant from my Dad when he picked me up from the airport reeking of alcohol.
*EDIT:* My sister’s story is better. She was 5 years old when she walked 10 minutes from our Mum’s home to the shop for a teddy bear, apparently the shop keeper just let her take it. She made it home before my Mum realised she was gone.
