The song was written by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. The song is about drug addiction, namely heroin addiction. Johnny Cash covered the song at the very end of his life and could probably relate to it because of his own experiences with addiction. His wife, June, is featured briefly in the video. She passed away just before Johnny.. She was his soul mate and the person who helped him kick his drug addiction permanently..
I never listened to Johnny Cash, or the original writers of the song Nine Inch Nails. I did stumble across this track though and it made a 37 year old man like myself weap until the last note.
"The Empire of dirt" - the feast table, the trophies, the mansion, the smashed gold record.... It all meant nothing in the end, when your loved ones are gone
I have seen this video hundreds of times, and still have the reaction you did.Its very powerful. After filming, his daughter said"it sounds like you're saying goodbye. He said I Am"
The song “ HURT “ is originally from the band call - NINE INCH NAILS - they wrote the song they was known for their 1990 Rock Punk band and their take of this song is much HARDER, filled with ANGER, VILANT PAIN... Now the iconic Mr. Johnny Cash did a slower emanational hunting Western rendition of the song which Mr. CASH could relate too the song for his life was coming to its full circle. You see Mr. Cash was is known for the hard man in Black and didn’t give a Fuck Westin performer with the DARK SONGS as well. When I first seen this video of Mr. Cash doing his rendition of the song “ HURT “ I knew this may be the last time we will see this great iconic Westin song writer singer and actor again. You see being an EMPATH I could sense Mr. Cash was Dyeing... He could relate so much to the lyrics of that song for he lived a rough life with no apologies behind his actions. In his own way Mr. Cash was fighting against the system that time which kept a good man down or that would keep a poor cold miners son longing to not follow in his fathers lead in an Honest Man’s dirty job and lifeless wages. I knew shortly after this video MR. JOHNY CASH would be dead... This was Mr. Cash respectively his last Swan song. They don’t make most musicians and songwriters like this anymore God bless him and love him, may the lord keep his soul closest to the HEAVENS....
Trent gave this song to Johnny he said i was born to write it.. Johnny was born to sing it. Its his now not mine. I was never a Trent fan but mad respect for him.
Your reaction was was so real, emotional and sincere 💔....and that's how almost everyone reacts to this masterpiece the amazing Johnny Cash gave us before his death (read other comments ref the background of song and the imminent death of both he and his wife June) He conveyed such emotion through his voice and the visuals combined, a rare and hauntingly beautiful talent. He is still 'The Man In Black' and always will be. R.I.P. Johnny Cash 💔
Johnny Cash is the True Country Legend, it is so cool to see someone as young and Beautiful react to his song! I been listening to him for 60 years!!! Vietnam Era Veteran!!!
Johnny Cash's soul was deeply burdened....it comes out in this song....he carried a lifetime of regret....and sadness....so very broken inside.....yet,so much talent...a voice for the ages❣️
When Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails heard Johnny Cash's cover of the song he wrote, he said, "Tears started welling up... I realized it wasn't really my song anymore." That says it all about Johnny Cash. He was just that big, that respected, that loved. He made that song God own and you could feel the pain and emotion through his voice. I cannot listen to this song or watch the video without weeping. I believe he was 71 years old when he recorded this. The man is a legend. I met him and his beautiful wife June when I was 15 years, after a concert they did in Colorado. My dad was and still is a huge Johnny Cash fan. We had backstage access and it was the most surreal moment of my life. I'll never forget it. He and June were so lovely, so down to Earth and so friendly. I still have the book he signed, tucked away in a safe place. There will never be another Johnny Cash. If you haven't listened to the rest of his music you really should. You'll love it. Merry Christmas. 🎄
You know he was a great artist when I watch these reaction videos from people all across the world and they all react the same way (like I did). Maybe there's hope for us after all. :-)
Sometimes it's tough having emotions. They can hit you hard. This is one of those videos that just brings them all up to the surface raw and spilling out. Thank you for having those emotions - and never be afraid to show them- It keeps us all sane.... Great reaction video!
Hi Onyinpearl. Hope you are well and hold on to goodness everyday. This song by Johnny Cash is beautiful but wow a difficult one to introduce you to him, his life, his wife, how they sang together. He was in prison for drugs. A very bad time. He got clean, had his wice, family, a tv show. AND he went back and did a concert at Folsom Prison. He wrote "Because Your Mine I Walk The Line". Lots of good stuff and a happy life.
If one does not cry when they first see this video, then they have no heart...... Music transcends all walks of life, and a true artist can tap into something very deep and emotional, and move us in ways we never imagined. You my friend, have just proved you have a huge heart!!!! Thank You and Be Well!!!!!
Your reaction is beautiful, and illustrates the importance of this last work of The Man In Black who took a very personal song about addiction by Trent Reznor and turned it into a song about his loves and loss in his life. THANK YOU for your honest reaction ma'am...very beautiful. True art should always make us feel, even what we don't want to feel...
As noted this song was written by Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails. Supposedly the size of the nails used to crucify Christ. On his last album Johnny also covers Soundgarden's Break This Rusty Cage. Part of the poignancy was the fact Johnny knew he was not long to live and died just several weeks after the song was released. Johnny Cash is a friend of mine.
The little house he visited in the video , is where he was raised , near the cotton farming town of Dyess , Arkansas . He suffered a lot of pain there , and through out his life . The town is out on the flat lands . I also live in Arkansas , but I live in the hills .
Another great reaction. The outward beauty of the emotion in your eyes and face during your reaction just reflects the obvious inner beauty you obviously posses. Please keep it coming!
The original by Nine Inch Nails details his (Trent Reznor) struggles with drug addiction and is off the classic Downward Spiral album. The producer took the song to Cash who had experienced his own issues earlier in his life and was nearing the end of his life at this stage and the lyrics resonated with him. It could have been written for him as it expressed the regrets of an older man perfectly. Johnny's wife passed not that long after this video came out and he went not long afterward. It's almost a perfect storm of sorrow and yet it's strangely uplifting at the same time.
I never ear a song from Mr. Cash, you and I, have at the same time had the same reaction, thanks again to let me hear that song ! 🎸. And MY GOD you are beautiful! Manon from Montreal
The Cinnamon Hill Great House in Jamaica Was the home of the “The Man In Black " and his wife June Carter for 40 years +. they purchased as their retreat after they fell in love with the island.
You should listen to his earlier stuff in order to really appreciate how powerful his voice was in his prime. He was on his last legs here. Try listening to Ring Of Fire, Folsom Prison Blues, I Walk The Line, A Boy Named Sue, and Jackson. His live recordings Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison and Johnny Cash at San Quentin are considered classics.
Don’t ever be sorry for crying during a song. If it makes you cry, then it had the intended effect. Music gets into your soul. That’s why so many people watch reactions. It feels good to see someone who feels the music as we do. Here are a few other Johnny Cash songs. If you can take the emotion, I would suggest "Monsters" by James Blunt. It is less than 1 year old. Blunt found out that his father had stage 4 kidney failure, and no organ donor could be found. This is his message to his father (be sure to watch the official video, where his father actually shows up). The good news is that the video greatly expanded the number of folks who knew about the situation, and a donor was found. The operation seems to have been a success.
I was watching some of your video reactions to Keny Rogers "The Gambler" and "lady", and i was going to suggest you that you see this one... Very powerful stuff beautiful lady... don`t you agree? have a great day... you make beautiful videos...!
If this song and video doesn't bring tears to you, you assent human and have any emotion. I've seen this a number of times and it does it to me every time. The first picture was his mom who I hear ran his Museum. When she died I guess it ended up being shut down, and you are shown pictures what left inside. The others pictures are of his wife and daughter I guess. You see his wife there behind him on the stairs. The white house is where he grew up poor and where his younger brother died I guess. You see him go back here looking through the window and grabbing at the tree which I assume has some meaning to him. This was the last time he was in front of the camera. That piano when he closed it, was never opened and played again after that. This video came out in 2002, a few months later in 2003 his wife June died. I think it was because of a failed heart valve. Johnny Cash died a few months after that, also in 2003. I know he had diabetes. I don't know for sure if it was because of that. People do die because of that. My old boss has diabetes. I think he was in his 50's. Was has the hospital at the time doing exercising tests there. I don't remember what happened for sure, heart attack, I know that much. He died there and I never saw him again. That was a shocker. Life is short. Johnny is saying everyone he knows around him are all dead. His friend, parents, etc. He's reflecting on his past like issues with drugs. This was a simple song, sung with a lot of emotion. You can see it in his eyes and hear it in his voice. While this is a cover song from Nine Inch Nails. Really was about drug addiction. Johnny Cash went another way making the song his own about his life, regrets, etc. I was never really a country person. There are song country songs I really like. Some country signers in a fan of anyway. Johnny Cash is iconic. He always dresses in Black just like you see in this video. He had his ups and downs in life like the rest of us. Life is short. I think he missed a lot as he was always out touring. Something like 300 days out of the year. A concert I went and saw at the fair, couple years before his death that I'm so glad I got to see, James Brown!!!!. Wow, he could still kind of do his moves and his voice was still great. He also was a hard worker all his life. You see him in that Rocky movie, it was even better live. If you get a chance, go to their concert while they're still around, these iconic signers. I would love to see Willie Nelson if I get a chance as an example. Johnny Cash as others will be remembered. I hope for a very long time. Johnny's Goodbye Song. He didn't write it. It was originally recorded by Nine Inch Nails, but, he made that song his own. Rest In Peace, Johnny.
Don't be afraid to show a tear or emotion from a song that affects you . It means your human just like the rest of us .
Johnny Cash one of the greats. His version of this song grabs my heart and puts it in my throat.
When a song has the power to rock you to your core it’s truly a magical moment.
You know right 🥰
It certainly does
The way he closes the piano at the end says it all. 'My time is done'.
You know right 😊
He was closing his own casket, symbolically
Like he was saying goodbye to an old friend, one final time.

When he closes the piano...
Growing up listening to him and watching him say his goodbyes was so heart wrenching....
Let it Flow, his wifi and Johny deserve it
A mic drop that you can only earn by decades of hard life and serious hurt.

This song still makes me cry. I've loved Johnny's music since his old single "Ring Of Fire" way back.
He closed the piano like a coffin and that was the last time he played the piano.
Johnny Cash R.I.P
This song came out after my dad died and always reminds me of him and makes me cry
Pamela Ward same here. My dad passed shortly after this video. He looked a lot like Johnny Cash. Every time I watch this, it’s upsets me. ☹️
