This song seriously impacted my entire perspective on life, I'm only 20, but it reminds me that I need to be a good person and stay close to my loved ones.
exactly. never let anything go unsaid if you love someone, tell them. if you've wronged someone , apologize. because we never know when we might see them again, if ever and regret is hard to live with.
I wish this song could have been around in 1993 or earlier. 93 is the year I lost both of my parents to a car wreck. I wasn't the nicest son and I had an argument with my mother over the phone the night before they died. I just said "Well I will apologize to her when they get back home tomorrow". That apology never came to fruition and I regret what I did to this very day. That was almost 30 years ago.
Trent Reznor wrote this song as an angry young man, who didn't think there was a future to look forward to. Cash performed this song as an old man looking his own mortality in the eye, knowing the end was near. Reznor admits that this song is Johnny's now, but I think he may reclaim it as his own swan song, years if not decades from now.
To be honest, if I'd wrote a song like that I'd want to give it away too. Imagine having to sing it live hundreds of time, you'd either have to fake the emotion or live it out every time. One is bad for the audience, the other bad for the artist.
And this song is relative. Everybody is affected by it differently and applies it to their own experiences. That's why Johnny's version was so profound.

I'm 51 and I live alone. I actually prefer it that way. But, sometimes the emptiness does creep in. Then I'll see someone in a wheelchair or unable to feed themselves and I realize I'm not doing so bad.
I understand the feeling sir. I really do. This song is quite relative and it speaks to each person differently and I want to thank you for sharing your thoughts on it. I lived alone for many years after my parents died. I was in an argumentative mood one night over the phone with my mom. They were due back the following day. That night, I brought my mom to tears. I could hear her sobbing and weeping quietly over the phone. At the time I felt really bad but I knew that I would be able to see them the next day so I could hug her and apologize to her. The next day, they were on their way home from vacation when they were killed by a drunk driver. I've lived with the regret for almost 30 years. It's my biggest regret. Ever. Most of the time my wife is at work and I collect disability because I have some serious mental struggles that I deal with but they don't define me. So I know what you are saying. I spend most of my time talking to friends on facebook and what not but it really isn't the same as the social structures we had growing up. It's sad and I feel alone right along with you. I hope you are well.
I do the same but with black people reacting to 'You've lost that loving feeling'. I love seeing the look on their faces when Bobby Hatfield hits that high note.
Johnny Cash was a huge, huge star. Across multiple genre of music, movies, too many things to list here. To me, a man in my 60's, much closer to death than to birth, it is the repudiation of "He who dies with the most toys wins." Instead, he, so very near the end, realizes that he who dies with the most toys is...just dead. Of all that you gather on your journey though life, possessions are the least valuable of them all. Remember that. The lady on the stair is his wife, June. She passed away 3 months after this video was made, and 4 months after her departure, Johnny joined her in the endless sleep.
I've probably heard this song 200 times, still haven't found a way to not cry. Hemingway spoke of those that could not break and were killed by the world. For the broken, there is Hurt. It seeks out every crevasse of self-hatred, shame, and regret in your soul, solidifies in those areas, and becomes forever a part of you.
He lost his wife June just before releasing this. She was his light. She was his everything. You can hear the pain in his voice. And When he closes his piano at the end. That was like his goodbye to the world
Johnny Cash was a pioneer in Country Music and Rock as well. He is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Country Music Hall of Fame and Gospel Music Hall of Fame. This was his good bye. Great reaction.
I love this video because its definitely life changing. It reminds me of "Walk the Line" the biopic about his life when the station manager who is interviewing him says "You need to show me something, You have one chance, one song to sing to Saint Peter to convince him to open those pearly gates. Whats the song?" I think this is his.
Johnny Cash grew old and his fans abandoned him. Even his wife stands aloof in the video, watching him empathetically, helplessly, as he sits at a table without guests, all alone, surrounded by the meaningless products of wealth.
That was his wife June Carter Cash standing on the staircase, she die on May 15 2003, Johnny Cash die four months later on Sep 12, 2003, some say from heartbreak.
Also, the video was recorded Feb of 2003. When June sat the family down to watch, Roseanne said "Daddy, it sounds like you're saying goodbye" Johnny said "I am." That was end of Apr/early May (it was released shortly, a week before Mine passed).
When you're like me, 57 years-old, this song will impact you in ways you cannot imagine. The mid-fifties start working on your psyche in ways you never before expected. Random aches and pains become "What ifs" of cancer, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and whatever else is out there to kill you. You learn to not skip doctor's office visits, keep your lab appointments and avoid obvious ridiculous activities like cliff-diving and free-ascent ice-climbing. Those are for people that haven't figured out that your time on this planet is finite...
I was in high school this was released. I’ve listened to it countless times.. covered it too. It has NEVER lost its impact. As Trent said… it was a song he was born to write but Johnny was born to sing it.
Johnny was the Grand statesman of country music, but beyond that he was a champion for the common man. He and June Carter Cash is in Heaven now, with out Hurt. Still sorely missed by me.
Believe it - he wan't alone in the world when this was recorded, but the scens from is life shown thoughout this show how rich a career he was looking back on. I believe it was his daughter who on seeing this video for the first time, and how he closed the piano lid at the end, said "It looks as if you re saying goodbye" and he replied "I am". Then check his dates on wikipedia or wherever and the date this was released. If this video doesn't hit you hard in the feels, check your pulse. I'm a grown ass man and I've been through a far bit in my years, but this has me blubbing like a baby.
For Trent Reznor, lead singer of Nine Inch Nails, who originally wrote this in 1995, it was about his struggles with substance abuse and depression. For Johnny, this song resonated with him and was a reflection on his life, his regrets, was an apology and a goodbye. June, who was standing on the stairs in this video, died 3 months after it was filmed and Johnny passed 4 months after her. So, 7 months after the filming of this video both of them had passed. Because of Johnny's health, the director of this video flew to Tennessee to discuss with Johnny some ideas for the video. When the director saw the dilapidated condition the Cash Estate was in, he got the idea to film it all right there on the mansion/museum's properties. He believed it would aptly show the sentiment Johnny was trying to express with his version of the song. And boy, was he right!!! Johnny's version is powerful, but add the images in the video and it's almost overwhelming. I believe this song and video was a gift to us from Johnny.... The gift of wisdom that sadly, usually only comes with advanced age. Peace brother....
@@michaelgilbert197 So well said. The wisdom--and pain--of experience, of having lived and failed and succeeded in that failure, and the pain of knowing that all that wisdom cannot be easily passed on to the next generation...it has to live and experience and suffer, too, to gain it.
@@michaelgilbert197 yes. it was an apology to June for all his transgressions through the years. They both knew they were on short time. And this was John's goodbye letter.
Johnny Cash was a great singer. In this video you will see his wife. She is the lady with the long dark hair. Her name is June Carter Cash. She died before him. I really believe he wanted to die before June. It didn't work out that way. She died first. June was the love of his life. Johnny sings straight from the heart. Rest In Peace Johnny.
This song is a lesson. Stay away from the drugs it only brings pain. Love fully and love life. I don’t think a lot of people realize what the message of this song is.
Material possessions can't buy us one second of the most precious thing, time. Do not waste your time, you are called to be the best version of yourself. Beautiful reaction.
Triumphant. Tragic. Joyful. Crushed. Sinner. Saint. Your emotional reaction to Johnny speaks volumes. You properly internalized the message and the man. Welcome to the family, young lady. We're good people.
The picture was his mother. The lady near him was June, his wife. She died 3 months later. He died 3 months after her. MESSAGE; Life is so short, don't screw it up! Ultimately, the only thing we really have is each other!
I appreciated your reaction. Johnny Cash sang many songs during his life that had to do with Jesus and eternity. And though he didn’t write this song, he wove me in that belief. Even through a life where he struggled with many sins He knew that Christ had paid the ultimate price for the sins of those who repent and believe in Him. Both his wife June and him died trusting in this greatest truth of life.
I also believe that's why he says "my empire of dirt", I know NIN did this song first, but when Johnny sings it, I think he did it with the thought that all the things he'd accomplished in his life didn't matter in the end. He just missed the people he lost. He had a lot of earthly treasures, but in the end it is only an empire of dirt. I love Johnny, and I know he understood that at the end of the game, the king and the pawn go into the same box. I'm glad he's not feeling that hurt anymore, and he can be with June again.
Mr.Cash was a christian, he "changed his mind" {repented) about life around 52 years ago, This is a message to the world to repent,...and the way he chose to say goodbye to us all! He and his wife met up with each other again in the same year....so that's some good news right there!!
This video, this experience, this wisdom handed down, teaches you one very important thing. Sure, you need to live as good a life as you can, for others, so you wont go to jail, and so on, but more important you need to live as good as you can now for that future you, you in your 70s or 80s either weeping in regret or full of the sad relief that you can look back without regrets that tear your guts out and smash all the good memories.
She almost got it completely right........she played the video to the very end...........but she looked away when the visuals of him closing the fallboard then moving his hands across it and coming to a rest on it. That is how the song, and the story, is fully completed.
Hard to get more powerful than that. He condenses life into an instant perspective within this song (Written by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails). POWERFUL! Great reaction. If u r familiar with Johnny Cash's life the video makes more sense.
Something about a genuine, honest reaction is just food for the soul. I loved your interpretation of this song. I cry every time i hear it. Im glad to see I'm not alone judging by the comment section. 😆 You earned my subscription. 💘 thanks for sharing your reaction.
There is an old saying: "life is wasted on the young". I'm 75 and totally understand, being able to see the end of my runway from here. I'm very well aware of my mortality, just like Johnny. He passed away in 2003 not too long after this recording and video was made. As you might have guessed towards the end of it, he knew where his home would be...and so do I. God Bless...
I feel what he is tring to say is this. The more you are loved the more pain your pass on when you are gone, Knowing your death is going to cause hurt in others makes your final hours all the more painful. He dose not want to hurt anyboday but the loss of his loved ones hurt him and so the cycle is set in stone. He knows when he dies people will be in pain.
You're simply not human if it doesn't make you cry. At the very least, have never formed relationships or loved anyone. I think this song, as done by Cash, invokes a retrospective look on life and what really matters.
This was powerful, but the Johnny Cash song that still brings tears is his cover of “If You Could Read My Mind.” After his wife passed away, he dove head first into recording. But that song was the one where you can hear him breaking up.
A masterpiece.. one we can all relate to.. You should listen to Folsom Prison Blues. Totally different but lyrical genius.. As always.. Joachin Phoenix plays him in the bio.. Great movie. The sing will make more sense to you after you see it.. Apologies if I've repeated other comments. I haven't read them. Just saying what I think.
Trent Reznar wrote this song from Nine Inch Nails. Johnny Cash asked if he could cover this song and when Cash finished the song, he sent a copy of the song to Trent. Trent didn’t listen to it until a few months later and that’s when he said this song was Johnny’s song. There is so much emotion in this song. A little back story about Johnny and the images you see too. The video was produced in the House of Cash, it is the home of Johnny and people would go to get a tour of his life. Kinda like Dollywood for Dolly Parton. The House of Cash closed its doors for good though. In Johnny’s younger days he went to prison, and he also struggled with drugs and alcohol. So when I listen to him sing about the needle tearing a hole in his arm, it makes me think of his past. The picture of the old lady on the wall is his mother who passed away and it killed Johnny to lose her. In the second verse, the lady standing over Johnny was his wife, June. She passed away only a few months after this song and Johnny died less then a year later. Many of his close friends said that he died from broken heart, and you can almost hear in this song that Johnny knew his time was coming and his last song needed to be this. An entire song about looking back on his life as an old man and having many regrets and troubles, but also being ok with it. Just a little more about the song and Johnny.
He lived 100 lifetimes it seems, 1,000 demons to deal with as he was not only his own worst enemy but in the end, his own savior, that's his wife June on the stairs who wasn't supposed to be in the video but came down the stairs just to check on him and her reaction is real so they kept it in, she died right after this and a few months later he joined her, I guess he just didn't want to be alone, legend does not do justice to all he was.
I loved the reaction. Did you know it was originally written and preformed by NIN Trent Reznor? You have beautiful hair. It must have taken hours to do all of the little curls.
I find it amazing that none of the dozens of reactions I read mentioned the fact Johnny Cash was a heron addict for many years. At his worst years of us even his friends abandoned him. The fact in the beginning he talks of piercing the skin is a direct reference to his drug us.
It's why he identified with the song so well. He and Trent Reznor both went through drug addiction. Both versions tell individual tales of addiction and recovery. Both are vital, intense, and powerful. Trent was kind enough to say that the song is Johnny's now...but they were brothers of a kind, in pain and loss.
Robert, Johnny Cash did not write this song. This is a Nine Inch Nails song written by Trent Reznor. This cover that Johnny did of this song is absolutely beautiful.
The beautiful woman in the video is his wife June. She died before he did. He didn't survive her by long. Only a few months. If I'm not mistaken this is from the last album he ever recorded.
Heartbreaking that he's at the end of his life, seen so many of those he loved gone, and realizing that all the awards/fame don't mean anything. Being at the end of life with so many regrets. I cry every time, but when he closes the piano and gives it a final caress...that kills me.

This song is litterly Jonny Cash's swan song. It is the song which marked the end of his musical career, and his life.

I love Johnny, and I know he understood that at the end of the game, the king and the pawn go into the same box. I'm glad he's not feeling that hurt anymore, and he can be with June again.
@@autumntaco8722 "At the end of the game, the king and the pawn go in the same box." Very nice!
In an interview he said this was his goodbye song to his wife and daughter! Sad!!
Much like this song and life the only regret that it isn't longer
VERY RELEVENT IN ALL ASPECTS OF LIFE
Mr.Cash was a christian, he "changed his mind" {repented) about life around 52 years ago,
This is a message to the world to repent,...and the way he chose to say goodbye to us all!
He and his wife met up with each other again in the same year....so that's some good news right there!!
MY SWEETEST FREIND, always gets me!!! 🇬🇧
He was saying goodbye...that was good enough.
Wow this is so emotional the lyrics are so powerful, great reaction sist
Great reaction to a great song, RIP Johnny Cash
I like when he says you can have it all. My empire of dirt.
You earned my subscription. 💘 thanks for sharing your reaction.
Wow, thank you!
Trent was meant to write this, Johnny was meant to sing it.... and the guy who made the video was amazing!
I loved the reaction, subbed!
amazing reaction. my goodness you are gorgeous. that hair be on point :)
The sweet spirits are easy to spot aren't they?😆
This is just an amazing, touching song. It will get you in the feels everytime
You're so pretty it is hard to look at your face and cry to!💖
This one...is a masterpiece.
Your first reaction...my 10.000 reaction to Hurt. or something like that 🙂 One of the best covers ever made.
Glad you liked it!!
Real reaction. Beautiful person 👍
He never reopened that piano. Once he shut it, it stayed shut. All the way to the day he died.
Many Thanks for your sweet high sensibility, Loveth! ... Yes, our live is often "Full of broken thoughts ...we cannot repair"!
I have listened to this song 100 times and have cried 100 times, I just cant listen to it and not tear up
You're simply not human if it doesn't make you cry.
GRAZIE!!!!!!!!!!
Couldn't stop crying....NO tears! Come on.
He lived 100 lifetimes it seems, 1,000 demons to deal with as he was not only his own worst enemy but in the end, his own savior, that's his wife June on the stairs who wasn't supposed to be in the video but came down the stairs just to check on him and her reaction is real so they kept it in, she died right after this and a few months later he joined her, I guess he just didn't want to be alone, legend does not do justice to all he was.
wow gotta say i love your hair..awsom..love f norway
God you are a beautiful woman
Beautiful reaction
Wow relaxing first one to watch
I loved the reaction. Did you know it was originally written and preformed by NIN Trent Reznor? You have beautiful hair. It must have taken hours to do all of the little curls.
You're name is really Loveth? That is so cool! I think I'm in Loveth with you 😄
I find it amazing that none of the dozens of reactions I read mentioned the fact Johnny Cash was a heron addict for many years.
Maybe they were being polite.
beautifully done dear. ♥
I hate to realize I’ve hurt more people than I’ve helped, especially the Good Lord.....God please forgive me. 🙏🙏
Originally by Nine Inch Nails. Reworked and covered by Johnny Cash. A beautiful version of the song.
Wow
He was so broken hearted💔 he missed June carter so much😥
She was still with him, she is in the video? She did die a few months after.
i am surprise the amount of people who have not heard of this song from him.
Trending Now in Indonesia! please react Amazing Singers from INDONESIA...BARSENA, KARINA, SIMHALA "SHAPE OF MY HEART" BACKSTREET BOYS Cover......Its Really Goosebump and Best Ever Cover ...im sure you will love it... You must watch Sis
Cash had kids alive but the song represents all the missed time & moments during his long term drug addiction. RIP
I'm sure that's how he personalized the lyrics, however, Johnny did not write this song. This is a Nine Inch Nails song written by Trent Reznor that Johnny did this beautiful cover of.
@@aquamarine0023 oh sorry I thought I added 9 inch nails credit. My bad
He was saying goodbye.
