In a perfect world, this would be a great track for the Indy Car series to run again. The series could run two races on the trip, one on the oval and one on the road course.
I'd love to see indycar rejoining the Lausitzring. I do believe that there are still plenty of petrolheads out here who adore motorsport the American way. I really hope that they will give it a second chance. It would become a win win situation for indycar hence F1 isn't televised live in free TV anymore here.
at the 43 minute Mark, Bryan Herta says hello to his family including Colton who is now driving Indy Car in 2020. At the 1 hr 5 minute mark Paul Page was talking about Alex running 4th and moving up and what a great guy he is too
One of the worst races in CART history. Thank God, Alessandro Zanardi survived that crash! But man, it was horrible to watch. It's also crazy to know that Kenny Brack who won the race was also going to be involved in a terrible crash. But thank God, he survived too.
Really sad that the accident overshadowed what could’ve a been a thrilling three-way showdown in the end. What a comeback from Zanardi though, one of the greatest sportsman ever!
What a tough weekend for everyone associated with CART that weekend. The trauma of what happened in the US while they were in Europe, then the brutal accident that nearly claimed the life of Alex Zanardi, I wonder how many race meetings have seen such turbulence emotionally
I remember watching this race. England and Germany were scheduled for back to back weekends. It was supposed to be a new addition to the season, taking us to a 22 race season. Oh well at least Alex survived. The medical team did its job and kept him alive in the chopper to the hospital. It did put the best last nail in CARTs coffin.
The day or Alex Zanardi became one sport and disabled person heroes. Just after the 11th september. I am personly disabled (Asperger syndrom and dyspraxic and cyclist like Zanardi and i am admirative of his life after this crash, few person will be his volontee for win of the life difficulties.
I'm pretty sure the combination of Driven coming out the weekend of the canceled Texas race, the cancelation of the Texas race itself, and this race that shouldn't have happened in the first place killed CART.
Plus the race in Rio was cancelled, CART pissed off the engine manufacturers, and the leadership’s incompetence drove Roger Penske to the IRL. Toyota too, eventually…not to mention putting CART on the stock market! Great for the quick cash grab but the stock went up or down depending on whether rumors of merging with the IRL were unfounded or not, so of course Tony George had a field day fucking around with that.
Was there when Zanardi lost both of his legs. It happend in front of us still hear the sound of the impact. It was a wonder that the race took place at all... Because 4 days before was 9/11 so they where thinking about canceling the event.. But because everything was already there, they dicide to go on! Also a shame that practice and qualify on the saterday was canceld due to rain...
@@arlindosilva2557And there was some debate as to whether or not to air Sports Center. They did decide to and as a result SpirtsCenter has aired every day ESPN has been on the air.

@@martenspitzner408 Honestly, a non-championship race at the Lausitzring with a multimillion euro payday might just work.
Since indycar now started to raced again in international (even its just in toronto) i hope in future they comeback to this speedway

Kenny was injured in Texas 2003.

Alex seems like a great guy, he has had a rough life between racing and the cycle accident. Shame bad things happen to good people.
I remember this race very well, I had not seen it since back in late 2001. Thank you for re-posting it
The worst season-ending injury in the history of sports. And to say it was only a season-ending injury is remarkable.
Season-ending? I think you mean career-ending.
@@theDesync He raced again!!

Great to meet someone with the same syndrome.
Kinda disrespectful implying that asburgers and Dyspraxia is on the same level as having your legs ripped off in an horrific racecar crash..

52:26 Oh the irony...
This is one of my worst memories of motorsport along with deaths of Ratzenberger and Senna. I'm glad Alex did came back though.

I can’t even imagine how traumatic it was for the fans sitting where Zanardi was hit. They essentially saw his legs get vaporized. Horrific.

Not as a live, same day broadcast, but it was recorded and aired the following monday (9/17/01) on tape delay.
In the first days after 09/11 ESPN aired News broadcast from ABC or extended editions of sportscenter.
