If you listen closely, you can hear Roy Keane from outside the studio, saying “Gary! Best captain? That was my job! You don’t thank me for doing my job! Dear oh dear”
The first time I saw Roy Keane play, I was completely blown away by the force of nature I was witnessing. What an absolute magical player, everything you could wish for in a footballer.
Roy is definitely all about standards. He got sent home from the World Cup because he wouldn't stop arguing that the standards and facilities for the team were unacceptable.
Although it's true he was unhappy with the facilities, the reason he got sent home was for kicking off with Mccarthy after he basically accused him of faking an injury to miss a qualifying game.
The way Keane stands up to viera when he's having a go at Gary in the tunnel sums up Keane brilliantly, knowing Gary's not a tough guy Keane backs him up have a go at me then cause Keane loved a fight
After reading Roy's book(s), it seems the early retirement of Cantona making him captain plus the cruciate injury in '97 were key to him becoming the incredible midfielder he was. He was good pre '97 but probably lacking in professionalism and standards. Post 97 he knuckled down and just became a lunatic.
@@AdityaJyothilal I'd say he's referring to the 2002 Biography, the one ghosted by Eamon Dunphy. "Roy Keane: The Autobiography". It's infamous for the Haaland comments in particular.
He was a bit more nuanced. It wasn't fear it was discipline! When you see your captain going into war mode, taking things extremely seriously and performing well week in week out you just have to pull your socks up and get up to speed. Roy gave it 100% every week. By contrast, if Maguire is actually giving it 100% he just isn't 50% of the player, so the standards he sets are probably half as high, if that.
