Hey, Gary, I have a suggestion for insect repellant that I use and love now. I buy my Sawyer permethrin insect repellant in the same aisle as the regular Off and Deet and others. I buy mine from the sporting goods aisle at Wal Mart. But the Sawyer, in a big yellow can or pump spray bottle doesn’t go on your skin. You spray it on your clothing, and let it dry before you put the clothing. Once it dries, it doesn’t smell. And it lasts on your clothes for up to six weeks! Once you are wearing your clothes and your body heat has warmed it up, you notice that the bugs don’t bug you so much.
Because it lasts for six weeks, even through washings, it doesn’t rinse off if you get wet. It is based on the natural insect repellant qualities of the chrysanthemum flower. They have either synthesized that or made a close match. So it has never bothered or irritated my skin.
My hubby and I own Stetson Creek Ranch in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California. We have an Apple orchard that we open to the public for You-Pick in the Autumn. I am in the orchard all day while we are open, and I have set up my base of operation by the pond, and of course, that means mosquitos. The Sawyer permethrin works at least as well as the stuff you spray on your skin, but in my opinion, it is better. I wear a baseball cap or cowboy hat, and I spray the hats, that protects my face and head. I wear a denim cover shirt most days, and I spray that, and I spray around the hem of my jeans, because ticks can sneak up your legs.
    I hope this helps!

Ticks come out after a rain storm. They can be there any time, but when it's dry for a while and then you have a good rain, it seems like the ground and low hanging branches and shrubs are crawling with them.

I'm really glad you did go back with the high-banker. I saw the contest videos too late to enter. I had picked #3 and even guessed it would yield around a gram, lol, oh well. Anyway I just took it to mean that I was learning some things here. That one big picker had me really curious what else was there and I was thinking "Damn he really needs Shane's vac-pac down there". That way you could suck out all the fine stuff in the bottom.
Since the #1 and #2 spots had been mined out already, who knows what had been there? Maybe there was even more than at #3. Part of why I picked #3 was because I thought it was likely to still hold more, even if someone had creviced there before.
I hope you do another one of these. I don't even care about winning gold I just want to play along and learn from it.

Regarding ticks I use Permethrin, treat your clothes with it (not your skin). Kills ticks on contact. I spray my boots, pants, shirt, hat. Let dry 24 hours. It lasts for several washings. Skin I use deep woods off.

    Nice one Gary
You have to love those flat pieces mate , you get a buzz when you first see em. And they are the peices the jewelers like too, big but not too heavy. Yeah i think when the the ticks first come out they need their first feed the most then they breed or something in a short cycle. I Hate the bloody things too. In the desert here you dont go in the caves where the roos sleep. Or the roo ticks will have ya and they are a prick of a thing.
Oh well mate my rivers are cooling down pretty quick round here. I dont know how you blokes handle the cold like yous do, saw Pauly panning in the snow, he can keep that. Might have to use this detector abit more.
    As allways love the movies
    Keep em comming
    Cheers Bruce.

Even Before you mentioned Jeff I was wondering if you were still ahead and if he is still at the school? I just bought 2 cans of Ben's we get ticks real bad in the spring here in NH. I can even pick them up in the garden I am not always lucky enough to catch them before they bite. I just pull them off if they are not deep, if they are then I turn them counter clock wise to unscrew them they go clock wise to go in learned that from a nurse. Great gold as always love your videos.

Plus I never see anyone with a magnet checking for the minerals or black sand

When I'm out for the day, I don't want to haul in the stuff needed to move rocks. Back when we could dredge we would take in all kinds of rock moving equipment. Most everyone I prospect or detect with carries a magnet, I have one in my pack all the time.
