The one silver lining with the definition edition is that it made us appreciate how great the originals were, even in aspects we overlooked before. Rip Rockstar
Rockstar didn't make definitive edition. RIP Rockstar? The last game they made (6 years ago admittedly) is the greatest video game ever made, I don't doubt that GTA 6 will be as good.
@ rockstar put their stamp of approval on this and they also charged people $60 for this garbage. Rockstar is dead, the creators of their previous works left and started their own companies
@@vicecityrocks1 You just now figuring out that Rockstar is money hungry? They've been charging people 100 dollars a pop for 8 million dollars in a fucking video game for 11 years now, they still make amazing games though.
@@vicecityrocks1 I'm not disagreeing, I'm just saying the "rip Rockstar" thing is an extreme overreaction. Every game that THEY MADE is a candidate for greatest game ever, until Rockstar themselves fails I'll have faith in GTA 6 and other future releases.
Currently playing the PS2 version of GTA III to 100% gor the first time ever. I played through all of the GTA games in canon order almost a decade ago, and I remember not really thinking much of GTA III at the time. Now I'm playing the games in release order instead, and I'm absolutely immersed in the world of GTA III in a way I didn't think was possible 23 years later.
The glitch at the end is called a megajump. It's used in speedrunning, though usually, you have to save a replay, jump twice, replay the review and cancel it immediately. That propels you forward and if done right, you only lose a little health.
Considering the darkest of the 3D Universe titles has a brighter sky compared to OG GTA 3, maybe the GTA 3 DE classic lighting combines the OG with elements of LCS.
i platinumed the PS2 port of GTA 3 around this time last year and was so enamoured with the atmosphere that i totally forgot the game's shortcomings, it's actually crazy that they still can't capture that 20 years later
The PS2.... port? The GTA 3 was developed for the PS2. It was later ported to PC, Xbox/IOS/Android and was emulated on consoles. It was never ported to the PS2... because that's not how porting works.
@@ColasTeam yup, and now they're gone :') idk if they're the same as definitive, I only know that Vice City required you to get 1.000.000 points in some stats menu, which was reduced to 100.000 in Definitive Edition.
Well some issues of the classic lighting can be explained: As the definitive edition is based on the 10th anniversary mobile version, the absence of clouds and fog is already present in the mobile version, which is understandable as phones from 10 years ago aren’t powerful enough for that. However, this is definitely not the case in definitive edition, as pc and consoles should be able to run these things easily and rockstar seems unaware of that this whole time, purely lazy work
Some of these examples reminded me of Sonic Adventure DX. The original was poorly ported to different hardware (from Dreamcast to GameCube) and every subsequent port has been based on the broken GameCube port. Also, GTA shouldn't look like Sonic Adventure 😂
It just needs that dark blue and green atmosphere lighting. I like how it still has that GTA4 look to it but it still needs the other colors from GTA3.
They all need more work. Classic lighting for all games isn’t faithful at all and the flat ugly roblox textures make a bunch of stuff look like plastic toys. And don’t get me started on the character models
@JohnYourube that's if you're picky. I personally don't mind the other 2 games. It's gta 3 I have a problem with, not enough blue filter. A lot of the buildings look like normal buildings and they don't have the dark blue color to them.
For me, the GTA 3 fog is iconic. Speeding through the volumetric clouds that are being lit by the streetlights and traffic lights is a core childhood memory.
Also, original PS2 games were developed with CRT displays in mind. They distorted the colors in a specific manner, that might not be fully replicated as CRT effect needs to be observed/felt in person
Software emulation should be accurate though, that's the whole thing its got going for it. It's the reference mode that hardware emulation will try to match, but with a massive speed advantage.
The fact that this game came out 23 years ago and it does some crazy weather stuff, like volumetric fog, several layers of clouds, naturalistic rain with randomly moving rain drops. Almost like this game wasn't supposed to be about a guy shooting people and stealing cars 😅 Ever since then Rockstar was one of the best, if not THE best studio with attention to details in their open worlds. Such a stain of shame that "Definitive Edition" is, spits on all that beautiful legacy of those talented and passionate people. Well, i'm glad they're at least trying to fix it now.
Between the lack of fog, pollution, trash in the streeets, we can safely say that the original III atmosphere is still butchered even with classic lighting.
Foggy weather in DE: lacks fog, further draw distance, but lights still on But San Andreas still have better fog so far Cloudy in DE pre-patch: clouds not fully fill the skies unlike real life and mods
There was no evolution to look at before this update, and the new classic lighting is supposed to mimic the old games. How does nostalgia play into this comparison?
Hey, you put a lot of hard work into your videos, thank you for being so detailed! Is it worth buying though? Do you think we will still get more updates coming up?
Well for me at least the trilogy still doesn’t cut it, and there are still lots of bugs and other issues that need to be fixed. For the full price of the Definitive Editions you could probably buy an old PS2 and the games, so I still think that’s a better route. They may get more updates but who knows? Rockstar wants to make GTA+ look attractive so they’re sprucing the games up and putting them on there as an incentive. The problem is that we’ll never get the version of the games that we really want or at least I really want.
@@CaptainGlack I already bought it! I ended up paying $24 for it since it was on discount. Like you mentioned, the games still need a lot of refinement. I reached out to Rockstar Games through a petition, suggesting they continue enhancing the trilogy and consider releasing a DLC patch to address the remaining issues. They haven’t replied yet, and my case is still open. I also own a PlayStation 2 and the original trilogy for the PS2, but I’d love to experience these games in full resolution. Hopefully, Rockstar Games considers hiring passionate fans of the series to help fix the remaining problems and truly make this the definitive edition.

PCSX2 for PS2, they're also available on PC but to get the same feel you get on PS2 you need to use mods since they have taken a different approach on the lighting

VC and 3 DE didn't benefit at all from classic lighting VC night sky becomes too dark instead of pink and blue like the original, and the morning sky becomes TOO bright
A stopped clock is still right twice a day, but what you say is right. There are a couple of scenes where it can look very similar, but I was very disappointed in VC and III. San Andreas clearly had the lions share of work done on it.

It's obvious that in terms of the classic lighting they put all the effort into San Andreas and VC and 3 were just an afterthought.
