Shout out to FTspeed! I have been doing a lot of research on upgrades for my FR-S/86 and it keeps bringing me back here. For good reason! Thank you!
Just finished installing my intake system, thank you for the amazing video. I didn't even need to look up the manual. You explained everything perfectly and allowed me to get this done in a little over an hour. Amazing video!!
Where was this video when I needed it
Man I wish you guys would do an install video about the HKS supercharger!
It's been a while, but hey, they're going to be installing an HKS GT V3 Supercharger very soon!
its up in case you haven't seen it. uploaded a few months ago
Had this intake for a few months now. The whining induction noise sounds great over stock exhaust.
Like the intake. Might consider buying it.
Please do a supercharger install! (if you have the time and resources, maybe one for the positive displacement, i.e. edelbrock, and the centrifugal like the Jackson racing)
Just copped a 2015 frs with 60k miles I cannot wait to start
I have this CAI for my 86, you can’t deny it although it’s not a lot you do feel some power gain from it, but the best thing about it is when you use the whole rev range after about 3500rpm it starts to whine like a supercharger.
Is that yours in your pfp??? Looks dope asf got an IG??
Bro I swear I installed a lil drop in filter and I also heard the supercharger whine 😂 I can’t imagine how good it will sound with a full on intake system
just put mine in this weekend, thanks for the vid!
What did you think about the intake
@@lrod3422 it made some nice sounds, Install was super easy, but no noticeable power difference.
Any pictures or videos of the output of those headlights? Since yall sell them on the site. Really need to see the cutoff and what not of the beams
Amazing vid
Holy shit, yea this is the cold air intake I’m going with
OLM TR style front bumper skirt next? Please lol
I keep seeing people on dozens of different forums say buying a CAI on this car is a waste of money and won't actually increase any power. Is there any truth to that?
Will the Perrin oil cooler fit with this intake box for 2017+ brz ??
Are you revving it to redline though. Ive been doing redline pulls through 60k of town in a 2017 86 manual, but with the factory air intake. My favorite sound is when it bounces off the rev limiter could you maybe release a video of that sound?
is anyone running an oft tune for this thing, please i want to run stage 2 with it
Yes I did, and it works fine.
What exhaust is in the car?
How can i install vtec?
Koosha Sepehri remove crappy flat boi and install hunda boi 👌
what about vvtl-i?
k swap
just a question, what if you have UEL headers installed and you go with the OFT stage 2 tune, does the 1 inch measurement stay the same or how would that change?
it wouldnt change, the stage 2 tune has nothing to do with the intake for some reason, just put it 1 inch and you should be good to go
Great videos ! Question : I have a gt86 from 2012. Is there any difference with 2013 ? Is it compatible with any mod noted 2013-2016. Because it is phase 1 right ?
Im pretty sure you will be fine. Heck I didn't know a 2012 GT 86 was a thing lol.
@@CobraKaiNoMercy the 2013 release model was first available in 2012. So 2013 includes 2012 models and early 2013 models.
@@jonjustdope Interesting. Thanks for the info.
👌
Can u show to next time how to install the k&n cold air intake please?
Was the video by k&n on their website not specific enough? Lol
@@dkuhn5043 oh I didn't saw that
I have a 2017 brz. I put a Perrin intake tube and k&n drop in. How does that compare to the setup in the video as far as performance?
Probably the same within a couple HP. The grimmspeed has that mesh which smooths out the air, which is supposed to be better. But honestly you will be fine with that intake tube and drop in filter.
Mr. Wiggles ya that’s what I was thinking as well. But just curious if anyone had some insight.
@@KillirBeard if you already got the inlet tube and the drop in, I'd stick with that. The Grimmspeed however, is an excellent CAI.
Is it compatible with a mocal oil cooler sandwich plate?
I have a Grimmspeed intake I'm yet to install because of a conflict with my oil cooler hoses. I can't rotate the hoses' position because of the oil filler cap. I suspect you may have a similar issue. I'm debating cutting the back of the intake's box housing and riveting in a recessed plate to give me clearance. Just haven't gotten around to doing it as yet.
The sound is not special. Looks ok but I’d like to see a before and after 3rd party Dyno to show the gains. Then I would get one. You guys need to buy a dyno. ;0
Most will say stock intake with a drop in filter is more than adequate for these cars
Chris Howell yea literally get a 50 dollar drop in, don’t waste money on this shit, I plan on getting drop in w uel headers.
@@kevinsosa6502 Bro seriously? Your BRZ is stock and you want lecture people on what's a "waste of money"? You don't know wtf you're talking about. The Grimmspeed CAI featured in this video gives the car 10 WHP and an additional 7 with a tune from a OFT (The only CAI OFP makes a tune for!), this is a proven fact, and you claim it's a "waste of money"? 🤦🏽♂️. Jesus Christ you are stupid. People like you are the reason why I'm glad I don't own a BRZ/86 anymore.
@@CobraKaiNoMercy people also don’t realize without the box your decreasing your power output because the filter doesn’t have an enclosed box to suck in the most air
@@dominicmedeiros2783 I unfortunately have found alot of people in the BRZ community don't understand how to make power gains in a car.
I have a stage 2 plus tune with the oft would this affect it
No it won't. I also have a stage 2 tune with this CAI. Your ECU will adjust.
@@CobraKaiNoMercy but i read the Q&A from OFT website, and it says that stage2+ only support stock box air intake tho. is it really running fine bro?
@@darkyjun Yes, everything will be fine before I did it, I emailed OFP and they said it would be fine. The Grimmspeed CAI doesn't alter the MAF enough to cause problems. You can request a special tune (won't cost you anything) if you're worried. Again this only applies to the Grimmspeed, the Injen, Takeda, etc will not work well.
Yall act like the AM crew when you explain your product. Lol. Good video though!
Can OTS stage 2+ runs on this cold air intake?
Yes
Is there any performance difference compare with Injen? Because it looks almost identical with Injen unit.
The gains are similar, the problem with the Injen is your engine will run lean by about 15%, the Grimmspeeds MAF is so close to stock it requires no change.
i had an injen intake and it made my engine light come on cause it was taking in too much air.? and was told if i switched it to stock it would turn it off i did that now they are telling me its wasting too much gas and the light is on again any ideas.? i need help.! mines a 2013
@@mvanessagarcia4333 Wait...
So the Injen CAI threw up a check engine light, you switched back to the stock airbox and it's running rich and threw up another CEL? Sounds like your MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor might be fucked up. I recommend trying another mechanic too.
Edit: Fixed mistakes
Is this carb legal? Or does anyone know a list of carb legal intakes?
Yes it is carb legal
I put my intake in my frs 2013 and now my rpms keeping dropping and my car turns off sometimes when I put it in neutral!!!! Help please!!!!
JFLO FUT probably need to flash the ECU bro
Were you able to find the problem?
TwilightMasterC I hope so, I think it’s the ECU I have a 2017, 86 so I’m confident in what I’m saying
IkaikaFrom Hawaii what! but I just bought one for my 2018 86 😭
TwilightMasterC I can assume it would be similar 🤦🏽♂️ shit I wish speed factory responded to there RUclips comments
You kinda sound like Sasuke from Naruto
Do you need the box?? or can you keep the air filter exposed?
Yes you need the box to keep the filter unexposed to dirt.
Yeah I was wondering that, you see a lot of CAFs now without the cover. I picked one off a wreck that the air box is totalled but everything else is good, wondering if I could use the intake tube and filter and no air box.@@LuisRodriguez-xg1sh
was up
Does this work for 2019 Toyota 86?
Yes, read description.
@@LuisRodriguez-xg1sh i cant read
That's called a nut driver.
Can you do a cold air intake & air filter for an automatic 86?
Derek Engelleiter yes you can 👍
Can you install this in combo with the rksport ram air hood and leave the lid off of the airbox to get extra airflow in?
Wouldn't make a difference if you were stock/NA. The airbox for the intake would be up at the front of the engine bay, while the scoop on the ram air hood would be farther up toward the middle. I mean you could do it for looks but it would be pointless if you were looking at it from a performance perspective. If you just like the look of the hood throw it on but leave the airbox cover
The Perrin CAI took a while to install but also another great option
Celvin Lopez which is better the Perrin cai or mishimoto? i ordered the mishimoto one but i really haven’t seen any videos
Jomar Mangohig to be honest I think the Perrin intake but that’s because I have it. Mishimoto seems like a solid option but I got the Perrin intake since it seemed the most functional to me
@@Mango_j98 Bear in the mind the Perrin requires you to remove the bumper. The Grimmspeed is the only CAI with verified dyno numbers. I would consider that one too.
Im stuck between grimmspeed and the injen intake...
So was I, the Grimmspeed is better.
injen is for honda
Is it legal in California?
nothing is legal in california.
I gonna buy Gt86 to tune ,but not this year and not next year ,maybe another year 😂😂😂
Aces Soon might as well wait for the 2nd gen lol
The second gen will be horrible. A v6 Camry engine over the fa20 no thank you, its also hideous.
whoop thatTrick got a source showing what it actually looks like? I’m sure it will look great.
@@gryphon123456 www.motor1.com/news/241414/2021-toyota-86-rendered/
@@gryphon123456 putting a low revving Camry v6 and added half a ton to the weigh to make it the new Camry. You mine as well just go get a Camry right now.
does it actually make power though?
According to a dyno done by Grimmspeed bolting it on will give you 10 HP.
@@CobraKaiNoMercy Basically negligible on a dyno.
more power...questionable; lighter wallet...definitely. With all the work people say Toyota/Subaru engineers put into the stock air box, and that it is a well designed airbo, why does it need to be changed? I could understand if you want show points or a cleaner looking engine bay, but in the end, power 'increases' are 5% at most under optimal, laboratory conditions
@@K03sport No not questionable. Yes cold air intakes without question are in most cases unnecessary and can cause issues. What I don't understand are people who flat out deny the gains from a cold air intake even though there are dyno sheets that show gains from 5 - 10 HP. I mean lets be real, Subaru engineers are smart people no doubt, but they are also trying to give you functionality without costing Subaru too much money either.
@@cq5085 10 HP is negligible on a dyno?
I would had went with engine mounts first . Engine moving to much
too bad the red doesn't match the 17+ manifold
it matches your moms panties though
can you measure your fuel mileage with the new intake? In theory, more air, more fuel...right? There is no such thing as "free" horsepower, so a higher flow filter will need more fuel to account for more air; but, since the car is NA, the car can only suck in so much air. Obviously FI is a different story. Interesting to hear your results in a FOLLOW-UP video, say in 3-4 months...
3 years later they didn't make a follow up video for you. this aint burger king. you cant have it your way.
feels real bad to have the base automatic model. I drive it in manual 99% of the time, thankfully it has a semi stick shift and not only paddle shifters.
Dealer tried to sell my the 2019 GT 86 manual and wanted 37,000. I presume because it says 'TRD' but it has no extra HP or anything and i'd walk away owing at least $32,000 and payments increasing up to $500 and insurance increase. Feels real bad :(
trd lol
I have the automatic version too so dont worry, they wanted me to buy the same car I was like hell no
@@bongorex3759 good man. they tried to upsell you
I told him I wouldn't buy it unless I walked it owing under 30k and he got mad and said no. I legit said "how do you figure this car is worth 32k and mine is worth 14k when the only difference is the brakes and wheels? I know cars depreciate but there's not even additional power. Anyways if I buy a new car it'll be a Supra" and then left :)
@@grammargrill hahahaha he got emotional
I would just spend the money to have someone install it. I'm a dumdum
Whirling Music this video makes it a lot easier, enjoyable, and rewarding to install, I recommend doing to yourself 👍
was the CEL turned on when it was installed?
I installed mine and got no CEL
no one is going to mention how he keeps saying pcv but that's the crankcase breather?
no one cares
They really need to make a fix/aftermarket option for the HPFP to stop crickets in these cars. I mean i get E85 conversion kits are available and theres alot you can do to stop it, but without spending a shit ton of money for an issue that shouldnt even be present in a brand new car its kind of stupid. Just thought id voice my opinion even though this is a COMPLETELY different subject lol
kDrainn replace your fuel pump they came out with a new design or something for it.. I did and crickets were gone
Make videos and parts on the new corolla hatchback 2019
ewwww no
Hey I was just wondering if you needed to tune your car once you installed the intake? Thanks
Nvm Thomas just explained what to do
The OEM intake is perfect why would you ever want this.. waste of money unless you are after the noise. Just do a perrin sound tube delete and save yourself money.
Look man the airbox is far from perfect, with a drop in filter and an inlet tube you can get 5 HP, this will cost you maybe $100-$120 all together, maybe a little more. If you don't want to spend $300 for the CAI to get the 10-17 HP then don't. CAI's are proven to increase horsepower with the Injen, and Grimmspeed showing the most gains, these are not purchased with sound in mind.
I don't know why some BRZ owners are so hostile to cold air intakes or modding the car in general.
Found same one for $70. $300 for MAYBE 1hp gain. Crazy
No...
Do you need a tune for this intake?
You do not. It's MAF is similar to stock. But you can use the OFT and get some extra HP, just hit up Shiv from Open Flash Performance.
Maybe watch it first before asking a question clearly stated within the video.
@@fjaajf you can watch these nuts smack your forehead buddyboi
Sounds stock kinda a waste of money

I sent mine to trash 2013
Why? I could gave you some cash for it
@@Carlos.Rivera He's lying. Grimmspeed didn't release this intake until 2014.
All this ricermod does is give you check engine lights.
...so, you bought one of the Grimmspeed units, or did you buy another similar box by a different company. was you light related to the new intake or something else?
Not even remotely true. I have this intake installed on my BRZ. Did not get a CEL.
You obviously have no idea what your talking about. In another comment you claimed the 10 HP gain from this intake was "negligible" from the dyno.
All that big metal box is gonna do is collect heat essentially producing a hot air intake, no thanks. There’s better products available.
