Five minutes of flawlessly executed, multi-transitional brilliance. Their record company pushed them for years to produce a radio friendly single. This was their response. Astounding.
Hence the line, BUT GLITTERING PRIZES AND ENDLESS COMPROMISES, CHALLENGE THE ILLUSION OF INTEGRITY. Talk about saying f you to the record companies, in a nice way. BRILLIANT.
The best part is that they had already rejected compromising their vision and integrity when they recorded 2112. That was their response to the demand of a “hit single.” Rush rules! 👊🏻
It still gets played on Canadian Radio
So good
Fly by night?
I can't tell you what a joy it is to see you "young-uns" rocking out to this amazing band. This trio was on a level not matched by many mortals, before or since. Believe me, we KNOW how lucky we were to be teens in the late '70s, early '80s. Man, we rocked out!
I am a 57 year old man, blubbering like a baby...... so many wonderful people (who are now passed on) filling so many great memories dancing around these tunes.....
Man, I'm 71 and feel just like you...❤
64 model too,I'm hearing you
What about Geddy Lee's Amazing vocals, bass and keyboards
Same age. Yup.
brother, I am about to have 10 years on you, but I feel the same!
Alex lifeson is the most underrated guitarist on the planet
yep...so creative...
The speed at which they are playing and filling the air with notes is astonishing... especially how clear and crisp it all remains without getting muddy. Because all three of them are absolutely killing it. The guitar riff is rapid and complex. The drumline has super fast triples going. The bass and keyboards as well. It's just insane. The adrenaline this one causes is amazing. Got to see it live once, and oh dear God was it electric.
#forthewin
Not only was Neil Peart a master drummer, his lyrics can be just as amazing. It took me 30 years of listening to this song before I caught the connection between his lyrics during the reggae parts to the classic song by Simon and Garfunkel "The Sound of Silence". Neil takes the lyrics to that famous song from the more innocent "peace and love" era of rock and spins them into how that innocence was lost via music's commercialization and the demands made of the artists by the music industry. "For the words of the PROFITS (was "prophets" in the original) were written on the studio (was "subway" in the original) walls- a concert hall ("and tenement halls" ). And echoes with the sound- of SALESMEN" ("the sound of silence" in S&G's version). Clever.
Thanks Cygnus. I was not aware of that connection. Very cool.
I was today years old when I learned this
@@scottstewart5784 "Today I Learned" Part B: Neil Peart makes another Simon and Garfunkel reference on side 2 of the same album on the track "Entre Nous": "We are islands to each other, building hopeful bridges on a troubled sea." This is a nod to the song "Bridge Over Troubled Water". You're welcome!
Thank you, CygnusKG. I came in to the comments to specifically point out the tie-in to The Sound of Silence. Your detailed breakdown of what Peart did with the lyrics is exactly the explanation needed.
@@IllumeEltanin Thank you. Glad I could save you some time and energy! :)
RUSH is the epitome of a beautiful Synergy !! Much love to a new generation willing to rediscovering some honesty
My 17 year old nephew can bust this out on bass. I just turned 50. It's kind of unbelievable when he comes over and hangs out. He makes me proud.
Love Rush! ❤️❤️❤️ You are so right all the changes in the tempo were to reflect different radio channels. Please react La Villa Strangiato. Alex Lifeson's guitar work will blow you away!!
I saw "the boys", perform this song in 1980 on their "Permanent Waves", tour. They had really long hair and were wearing kimonos.😮 In the words of "Ted", it was a most "excellent" concert! R.I.P. Neal peart, "The Professor". The best rock trio ever and they were all excellent musicians and masters of their respective instruments.
Great reaction....you listening to one of the best instrumental bands EVER! Neil "GOD" Peart on drums....shut the front door and go down this RUSH rabbit hole and you will be there for years!
I was a 16 year old boy in 1980 who waited months for the release of this album. Placed the disc on my stereo and flew away to uncharted lands. Ran around for months to all my friends, "Dude! You have to hear this!!" I still feel that thrill every time this song plays. Happy to see the younger generation "Getting it". Cheers.
My experience was exactly like yours back then as a teenager whose world was shaken by this epic song and album by one of the greatest bands ever!
"One likes to believe in the freedom of music, but glittering prizes and endless compromises, shatters the illusion of integrity" Poetry.
👍
More true today
Holy $hit, I never made that connection that the middle dude made towards the beginning about Alex’s beginning riff sounding like flipping thru stations on the radio. Been listening to Rush for 36 years (I’m youngish), never made that connection….props dude
I've seen RUSH live at least 6...7 times! There is no better sound of that intro when RUSH takes the stage! After that album...they opened all their shows with it! ***I cry knowing I'll never see them again!***
Three of the top musicians at their craft. How could it be bad? In my opinion, they are the best band ever. RIP Neil.
Forever timeless.. infinity comes to mind.. no seriously!
I love this! 42 years ago I heard this tune and it was my introduction to Rush. Saw my first show in Dubuque, Iowa in Feb of 81. Moving Pictures Tour. I love seeing today's hip youth discover this music just like I did. It validated the feelings I had at the time. You cats make us old guys feel young again! Now do side one from 2112! It will BLOW your mind. Trust us old Rush stoners from the day!! LOL
Same here! Was my first concert also in Dubuque and 20 some concerts later they’ve been my band ever since!
🔥😎🦄💜
Here are some Rush songs that will blow your mind....Natural Science, Between the Wheels, Analog Kid, By-tor and the Snow Dog, La Villa Strangiato, Vital Signs, New World Man, 2112, Xanadu, Cygnus X-1 book 2, and.....Anthem (to name a few). Please revisit Rush and introduce them to musical genius.
Love that you pointed out how the guitar intro that Alex wrote, if you see the music chart for guitar, it looks like an FM sine wave.
love to hear you guys so appreciating Rush, one of our greatest here in Canada. Middle guy even got a stank face for a bit!
Great reaction guys! Glad to see you appreciating one of the best bands in the world. I'm 70 years old and have been loving this band since 1968 and seeing you young guys genuinely enjoying them make this old man smile!
Triumph's song Magic Power is another ode to radio and the impact music can have on us. Great track!
I heard that they prearranged every aspect of the music down to 1/20th of a second. That is how they all go off on a tangent exactly in sync.
“Glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity”……
That song just sounds like joy...
The Three Bobbing Heads. LOL
You guys are great.
I love watching your generation enjoying the music I grew up with 40-50 yrs ago. YIKES, I'm THAT old ??!!
My first concert was Rush in 1976 I was 13 years old. It was at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. Tickets were like $10 It was the All the World's a Stage tour. Setlist was the same as the live Album.
The various breaks in the song represent changing radio stations. Genius. Rush is the greatest.
Master musicianship 100% 👑👑👑
Forget that -Absolutely EPIC " "rush la villa strangiato " -their 2nd best song eh
The ultimate song from the ultimate band. Rush.....there is NO substitute.
Great song to start your day.
Never heard Ryan talking that much... It's Rush man cheers great reaction
I took a walk in the park this morning and slipped on a dog turd. I didn’t get upset. Shit happens.
Next time you react to a Rush song, might I suggest Subdivisions? It's very powerful...musically & lyrically. Thanks, guys!
Rush has to be the G.O.A.T. band.....I cant think of any band with this level of instrumental proficiency at all levels. Tool is a very, very,......very distant second.
Have you ever heard of YES??
@@dougreed2257 a poor man's Rush, at best.
CFNY's promotional catchphrase was "The Spirit of Radio" in the late 70s.
This rock classic was written by their late great drummer Neil Pearl. The Spirit of Radio is a banger that is a feel good song that sends possible vibes by all who hear it. Two of my favorite Rush songs are Tom Sawyer and The underrated Roll the Bones.
Kinda crazy....we were playing this cassette 42 years ago in the weight room...and it was ROCKIN!
Thanks for this reaction guys. In my opinion, Rush is the greatest band of all time. No one compares.
Check out Xanadu from Exit Stage Left. The live video
Neil, RIP, is THE premier Drummer. Geddy is an incredible bassist. Took far too long to get into the rock and roll hall of fame. Great reaction gents
Another great Canadian band of that era was Prism. They were more noted for the careers the band members had almost moreso than the band itself. Wiki: Prism is also noteworthy for launching the careers of several former group members, including international record producer Bruce Fairbairn, songwriter Jim Vallance, Powder Blues Band frontman Tom Lavin and Headpins and Chilliwack musician Ab Bryant. A pre-fame Bryan Adams also contributed as a songwriter to several early Prism releases. Judging by what you guys seem to like, their song Armageddon would probably go over well.
BTW the "Official video" for Armageddon is not the entire song (missing 2 minutes), this is probably better ruclips.net/video/NH7pdYa7sfQ/видео.html
Spaceship superstar, another song by Prism.
@@ronbeck201 Night to Remember was a big ballad hit for them. Young and Restless, Take Me To The Kaptin, Virginia, Don't Let Him Know and Turn On Your Radar were other hits for them.
Please do another song by this legendary band, la Villa Strangiato. Rush has been the greatest soundtrack to my childhood. When we say we’re RUSH fans is an understatement.
First☝️of all, Rip 🪦 to the best drummer 🥁 of all time Neil Peart, Rush has great 👍 music 🎶. U guys need to react to Genesis 1987 Abacab live video.
More than a drummer.. he was a true percussionist. Neil was The Professor. That wasn't a drum kit as much as it was a full percussion orchestra.
Then, at some point, you realize the singer is also playing bass and keyboards.
As a 53 year old guy who discovered them at Moving Pictures in 81’ They are the soundtrack of my life.. Nothing Compares 💯
Lol, at first I thought you meant you were 53 when you discovered them in 81. I started doing some quick math & figured it was unlikely you’d be watching reaction videos & leaving comments at 94, though I’m sure crazier things occur all the time🙂
you want for Canadian...? Try... FM - Phasors on Stun or even better, Hours, beauty instrumental there eh...
Loved this reaction! You guys are hilarious!👏
I put the reminder on and get distracted. With football, you know, woman things. LOL!
Time to move down the 401 (local highway) from Toronto to Kingston Ontario. The TRAGICALLY HIP @ THE 100TH MERIDIAN. Start the BBQ and open a few long necks!
ALL OF THIS MACHINERY MAKING MODERN MUSIC BY THREE ROCK MASTERS FROM TORONTO, CANADA.
The soundtrack of my life the year I graduated. If you want a radio song that's fire 🔥 try Elvis Costello's Radio Radio.
Just wait until you check out RUSH 2112 , you might think it's a little long , but it's well worth it !!!!!!!
Check out Natural Science from this album, it’s incredible.🔥
The best!
For those old enough to remember twist tuning a car radio, I've always loved how this song 'dials' to the rock bit, then to the reggae bit, then to the rock anthem bit, then back the reggae bit. I remember doing that: trying to decide between different stations, playing different favourite songs on at the same time. It even starts off with that 'hunting' sound of moving the dial past the station and then doubling back.
You need to listen to Freewill off this Album unbelievable guitar solo by Alex Lifeson!!!
How about "FM" by Steely Dan from the movie of the same name. Never on a Steely Dan album but on most of the greatest hits compilations.
I saw Rush in concert twice, back in the '80's, and there were times that it was hard to believe it was just three guys onstage. Besides an amazing light and laser show, their live music sounded so full and the production and mix were flawless. So glad I was able to see them when I did.
Saw them twice in the 80’s myself, I’m glad I’m able to say that I did. 😎
Im in Toronto, they are putting out a 40th Aniversy of Moving Pictures, what is cool there are a a lot perks, but a 1981 concert from Maple Leaf Gardens never released was yeah ok,i was there, they would play New Years Eve 2 years in a row, yeah i was there, im now close to 62,saw thier names on high school marques when riding my bike around in Scarborough, dam i am old.
It’s a hoot just watching your reaction to this great Canadian band , can’t wait for you guys to listen to “A Foot In Cold Water”..
The song is “How Much Can You Take” . Give it a listen I think you’ll enjoy it .😊😊
I saw Rush in the early 80’s, live in San Francisco!! The best concert ever!! I’m 62 and still listen to them almost daily!!
It’s still hard to believe Niel Peart is gone forever. RIP Niel ❤️
I only saw Rush once, in 1980, and it was their first concert of the Permanent Waves Tour. I recently found an audio bootleg recording of the San Francisco (Daly City) date for that tour on RUclips. This would have been almost 2 months after the concert I saw. It was great to hear the concert again after more than forty years. The set list, according to Set List FM was the same as the concert I saw.

Or, Eddie Money's "Give Me Some Water", Steve Miller Band's "Go On Take The Money And Run" , Thin Lizzy's "Jail Break". All killer, no filler.💖
Donna Summer - on the radio
"Working man" live in Cleveland.
They are so good, I mean really!
Guys, gotta listen to Limelight!! Alex and the boys are amazing in that one as well. Have a great day
I grew up listening to Rush. It's great to have their music played for those who have yet to experience it.
Always keep in mind that only three people were in Rush and always keep in mind that they could pull off live what they recorded in the studio.
They were nothing short of phenomenal.
rush was a big part of my life as a child of the 70's here in canada they played my high school dance when there first album was released they had john rusty on drums got to meet and talk to Geddy and Alex very nice guys i was just getting into guitar back then 1973 or 74 i was 14
So I heard another reactor say that Getty Lee's voice reminded them of Fraggle Rock. The Rush Family wouldn't have any other vocalist for this band! I'll give you a couple to consider. "Freewill" with perhaps the best breakdown in rock history, and one you may not get a request for, "Passage to Bangkok." Love that you guys feel the music...great reaction!
Personally I heard that reaction I think he's on crack lol! Geddy's got pipes and they just got better as he got older
Yes gentlemen I just saw that reaction this week and yeah he’s on crack and I’m probably not going to be looking at their reactions anymore.
When I heard them making fun of Geddy’s voice, I thought to myself, you just lost a TON of fans you may never get back.
@@ginamarandino6451 I ❤️you, Gina.
"All this machinery making modern music - Can still be open-hearted - Not so coldly charted, it's really just a question of your honesty, yeah, your honesty - One likes to believe in the freedom of music - But glittering prizes and endless compromises - Shatter the illusion of integrity, yeah" - Such a great truth bomb hiding in a song about the radio. How relevant is that still today? Neil you were something! RIP
Some of the best and worst music came out of the 70s and 80s. Rush is at the top of the best
One of the most talented bands in the modern era - watch these dudes live.
I've always compared this masterpiece to being on a wonderful roller-coaster, the transitions are insane, GREAT REACTION, more Rush please 🔥😎
Late to the party.
Phenomenal reaction.
Watching from the 270, previously of the 859 and 606(without moving) and 6 years in the 502,(!) mid nineties.
Always, always enjoy your reactions.
Now imagine listening to that song, live!! I had the privilege, on March 4, 1986 to be at Rush's show in Montreal, with "The Spirit of Radio" as the opening song... 😛
Marillion had been the opening act, playing the whole "Misplaced Childhood" album. And Rush took over, setting the stage for the whole evening with this song... awestruck!
The transitions in this song is the sound effect of turning the radio dial to a different station. THAT'S why there are so many different sounds. Back in the day, we had to manually turn the dial to get to the next station. Hence, the different sounds. You should react to Red Barchetta. They actually make the sound of a car in the middle of the song and remember, there are only 3 members in this great group.
It’s not just “Rush”….. it’s the best of rush. Touching all who listen.
This is the song that let's you know, if you don't already, that Alex Lifeson is, OMG. I hate the word underrated but shit it applies here. You HAVE to react to Xanadu. You will be so so so sad if you don't do this song. Love you my bobble heads.
Speaking of record company executives and their expectations: after Rush's third album, the execs at their record label threatened to drop them if they didn't come up with more "radio friendly" songs; 2112 was their way of telling them to "stick it where the sun don't shine," with a 7 part 20 minute title track that would be come to be regarded as their greatest masterpiece ever, giving them the freedom to chart their own musical course. If you liked the transitions and the instrumentals here, just listen to the title track, and prepare yourself for a real treat!
🎤 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥
Don’t forget about the playful brilliance of side 2
And the best part is they were 3 likable down to earth Canadian dudes who didn't overtly say F you to the record company they just did it with the music! Classy guys!!!!
More than simply band mates...they were best friends who stood by each other through everything life and the music industry threw at them!
I be seen Rush 40 since 1979…..BUT can you do Tribe Called Quest “Award Tour” ??
Back in the early-80s on the weekends, alternative music focused 102.1 CFNY used to send their DJs out into the Toronto clubs to broadcast their full shifts live from the dance floors. It was a cool concept that made the radio listener really want to join in. It also gave CFNY world wide recognition before the advent of the internet.
Many a weekend we would hop in a buddies car and drive an hour or more to Niagara Falls NY to hit the clubs down there listening to DJs Martin Street and Chris Shepard all the way. Good memories
Impossible to listen to this song without a smile. So much positive vibes! Brilliant!
Just came across yalls channel and seen 502 and The Ville. Love Rush and killer reaction. BTW- Hello from Owensboro 🤘🤘
You guys are awesome! Love your reactions. Especially to Canadian bands. Check out the Headstones. From Canada. Great band. Smile and wave.
Ryan, I just love re-living all my favorite music of the last 45 years through your eyes & ears. Seeing you experience these classics for the first time is such a joy.
Another kind of similar song lyrically, please React to Triumph's "Magic Power." Also about the power of radio to lift one's life and spirit.
10:08 - Nick: "I'm dead" 💀
I KNEW you guys would LOVE this song!! I think you loved it even more than you did "Tom Sawyer!!" Another amazing Rush classic.
You should definitely do "Closer To The Heart," "Subdivisions," "What You're Doing," "2012" (the multi-part mega-epic that covers all of Side 1 of the _2112_ album), and "What You're Doing," "In The Mood," "Finding My Way," "In The Mood" and "Xanadu!!" 🤘🏻🐻🤘🏻 Rock-Out!!
*P.S.:* For other GREAT songs about the radio, check-out "Radio Ga-Ga" by Queen (and, yes, this was actually where Lady Gaga got her name from) and "Radio Radio" by Elvis Costello & The Attractions!!
I've loved Rush and this song in particular for decades and I thoroughly enjoyed watching you guys dig it so hard!
Only RUSH!!!! Neil and Tommy Lee pull off stick throwing.... Tommy Lee has a video where he is in a roller coaster upside down playing drums 🥁.
You boys crack me up. If I'm ever in town steaks and beer on me.
Hard to believe that there’s only 3 dudes in RUSH
You really only hear this kind of tight playing, snap sync and zero instrument lag in a band who know each other this well, trust each other this much and love their instruments to this degree.
Once in 50yr kind of band.
I know you've heard YYZ before, but check out the YYZ Live in Rio vid. Then...Subdivisions, Working Man (studio and also the Live in Cleveland Time Machine Tour version), Xanadu (Live Exit Stage Left 1981), Freewill, Red Barchetta, CYgnus X-1, Hemispheres, 2112, Neil Peart's Drum Solo (Live in Frankfurt, but really any of his drum solos, like O Baterista, Show Don't Tell, Exit Stage Left...), The Analog Kid, Countdown, Losing It, Bravado, The Pass, The Weapon...yeah. 41+ years of the most amazing rock you'll ever hear.
Hello dude🤘🇲🇨 recomended for you!!!
Come react talent 3girls hijab Rock heavy metal Indonesia band VoB:god, allow me (please) to play music 'OMV' amazing skill & baddas 🤘, VoB go to Wacken open air (WOA)2022 in german.

GREAT tune. Love your analysis but, if you want to know what's going on with the time signatures, check out "The Charismatic Voice" reaction. She picks apart the numerous time changes and is BLOWN away by how well they're done. Musically, it's insane but they made it work. Loved your reaction. Check out hers (she needed 23 minutes).
First Rest In Peace Neil Peart🙏
I've Loved Rush for almost 42 years now ?
I really didn't Love any particular musical group at the age of 12 1/2 but when i started hanging with a dude named Perry Lopez who Loved Rush, (now I don't know how he introduced me to their music, must have been a cassette tape or album he brought with him to my house) I couldn't believe how complicated their tunes were! All the other music on the radio, wbcn, or 94HJY, or wcoz, was good and all but Rush tunes made me work a little bit harder to figure out each song they had, it wasn't the boring verse, chorus, verse, chorus simple to understand and copy tune, Rush's music was hard to figure out and I freakin loved that, plus even back then they were master musicians, no three chord progression, or simple drum beats, or singing about partying and hot chicks, this stuff was DEEP and Very complex !!
Their music also changed with the times, 80's 90's 2000's 2010's...Their music helped me through alot of TOUGH TOUGH times.
It was an honor to have been alive during their Reign. God Bless them, all of you, Stay Positive & Keep Moving Forward ♥️🙏
Love your reactions!!! If you like the crowd part you MUST try the 'Live' concert video version- its a thumper
“It echos with the sound of salesman!” I worked in radio in the day and was one of those “salesmen” (Account Reps) Getty referred to. There was NO job I loved more and working in Radio was so freaking fun!
You guys unfortunately grew up in the wrong generation musically. You’d be the dudes we used to sneak into concerts with in the 70’s and 80’s to see Rush, AC/DC, yes, triumph, police, etc.
