The Hosta and sedum will both grow here in the PNW. The sedum may need to be covered or protected for part of the winter (too wet). The Leech Botanic Gardens in Portland used to grow high mountain/dwarf conifers and desert specimens by putting them in a raised bed that had a removable roof to prevent the constant winter rains from getting them. The maroon color frilly leaves on the near side of the Arborvitae were heuchera?? Or were they Coleus?

Just found your channel, I love your tips and practical insight. This year I'm working on a xeriscape landscaping for around my pool. I live southwest of St. Louis so the weather and temperature fluctuates quite a bit. Moving from Pennsylvania I had to get used to the very hot, dry spells during the summer. I'm looking for plants to include that would survive our winters and our summers. Thanks for your channel.
Just found your channel and have been binge watching episodes for ideas and tips. We live in the country and this year I'm expanding our front yard to include a 1/2 acre of hay field. Hi, from Toronto, Canada! One thing I find tedious to maintain is dark mulch installed around bright green or yellow hedges. It is a pain to keep the beds clean because the leaves are such a contrast. A brown mulch instead of the popular black is so much easier to maintain. Also , black mulch tends to stain light stone or concrete.
@Lee-Ann. Hello Toronto!!!! That is such an interesting point. I honestly had never thought about that but it makes perfect sense. I may steal this one to share in future videos!!!! Thank you for watching and I greatly appreciate the comment! I hope to hear from you again soon!
@Kassandra. Thank you. I try to be fair and impartial when I tell how much it cost. There is a difference between someone dropping in a few plants and a landscaping/hardscaping professional. It's skilled labor and in order to get that quality look we all see on pinterest it comes with a price tag. Thank you for watching!!!!
I see you tend to lean towards a clean edge. I like that but I am currently using rocks and the weeds are incredibly hard. To keep under control. I may need to scrap the rocks. 🤔 What’s your thoughts on landscaping weed material? I’m getting ready to put down some smaller pebbles around our house (all our mulch blew away) so want to know how to do it right. Thanks and love your advice!
I think landscape fabric is good to hinder weed growth, and it makes it easy to pull the weeds out. I would say the rocks along the edge are eventually going to get grass and other things to creep in there and will become maintenance. I would go with a clean edge.
@@BobbyKDesigns oh they are full of weeds and I can weed eat but it doesn’t get in between them. 😫 so if I’m trying to change from mulch to pebbles maybe it’s time for the rocks to go. 🤔 thanks Bobby
Oh no, haha! My favorite landscape was the one with all the plants, to which you said "Take the plantings out, 'cuz there's a ton of plantings in here" 😆
It’s all good. Everyone has likes/dislikes. There’s no right or wrong. I happen to find a landscape that is less cluttered more favorable but many people love lots and lots of plants in a small space.
@@BobbyKDesigns Yes, I appreciate your videos! They really help to get an understanding of colors and arrangements. Are you disliking the fact that there's a large number of plants, or how they have them arranged? I'm focusing more on sustainable design than conventional. I'm trying to look at more plants instead of lawn grass or impermeable areas, but I still want to make it look pretty haha.
@@nekoharena I love plants. The more needs the better IMO. However, more beds can mean more maintenance so how you lay them out and how many plants you integrate in them will make a difference.
@llisowsky1. NO WAY!! That's so cool! I LOVE that photo and IMO YES it's a famous landscaping picture. You type in "natural privacy screen" in google and that picture is bound to pop up! Thank you so much for the comment and I hope to hear from you soon in future videos! Take care.
Hi Bobby K! New to your channel and love what I've seen. I'm in a suburb of Chicago so you know we don't have long to enjoy the outdoors, lol. I looking for front yard ideas to up the curb appeal that's easy to maintain but gorgeous. My husband works long hours during the week (FedEx) and doesn't want to spend all weekend doing yard work. Hello from Corralitos, California. I was wondering if you use photoshop in your designs and if it’s difficult to design for a state far from yourself? ( different climates, soils etc). Enjoy your video!
@Vicki Kennedy. Most of the designs you see are from other states so it is not at all difficult. I love to design and meet people from other states! :)

Hi Bobby, I hope you're well? Watching from Bunclody, Ireland 🇮🇪 My problem is I see all these great ideas about how to design a landscape but what are the essential concepts that every yard should have? A reflection area, entertainment area, a green expanse for roaming? Thank you
@Colm Carton. I think this is a great question! My answer is...it depends on what's important TO YOU! Every yard is different for a reason...everyone likes different things and has different interest. What I would do is ask yourself, "What do you like?" and "What do you like to do?" With those 2 questions answered you will be able to answer the question of what should be in YOUR YARD. :). Take care and thank you for the comment! Keep watching my friend! :)
@Michelle Eberhart. Thank you Michelle. Hello Colorado!!! Sounds like your weekends are jam packed with fun! Stay tuned as I have some really great videos coming. Monday and Wednesday
Can you do a few videos on desertscaping? I've got a full acer that's 100% flat and dirt. Looking for how to add some vertical dimensions like small hills to break it up, mid height desert friendly trees/shrubs and a small water feature. Any ideas or tips?
Terrific! I have always wondered about landscaping - the cost to do like you described. It would be cool though if you then showed...what NOT to do and how money is wasted. (maybe you do on your channel) Question about the gravel path...very cost effective...but would the gravel get kicked off the path with general use?
I’ll definitely start doing some videos on what not to do. I do something similar called “Bad landscaping” and “things that drive me nuts”. Check those out. Got some good tips in there. The gravel is contained by metal edging along the sides. Can it move...yes... but it stays in the pathway. Thank you for the comment!👍🏼
I'm encouraged to know that you are in St Louis. I am in Holt Mo, just north of kc. Most of these landscape guys are in CA & what they plant has no relation to what grows well here. Im anxious to hear of plants & trees for our area.
MamaJP Petree How are you? I love your comment! I got your back! Lots of projects and landscape designing coming your way with many plantings. I just finished a pretty lush backyard in Kirkwood, MO with many native plants and some really cool trees. Stay tuned! Thank you for the comment! :)
Hi Bobby, I am watching from Central Eastern Ohio. I am trying to get some ideas for landscaping our front and side yards, eventually making our way into the backyard. But for this year, we are concentrating all our energy on the front and sides as they are visible from the street. Love your landscaping ideas and I am subscribing in hopes of getting some ideas from your videos. Much thanks and many Blessings ~SuzyJC-in-Pataskala-Ohio/USA_04.27.2022~
@Suzy Cowan. Thank you so much!! A little at a time goes a long way. Just stick with it and all of a sudden you step back and observe what you created and go "WOW!"
I’m with you! I love the lighting and think it makes all the difference! I know how to do it, but my stupid contractor threw out my lighting that I brought from my contractor. I did have the electrical put in, and I think I can get a wire under a walkway (I think!). I love to DIY, but I’m puny. I’m single, 4’9”, and run out of energy easily because I was sick. I wish you’d come and tell me what to do with two aggregate patios I have in my backyard. I have fence posts left where I pulled down a fence surrounding a hot tub I gave away. Shade sail? Staining the posts? Yuck! Professionally landscaped with stacked slate in the borders, but overgrown in my opinion. I want it perfect, but I don’t have time nor money nor a man to help me. Long story, but I’m helping my grown son and ex out because they have mold, so my beaus won’t come over! Isn’t this the weirdest thing?
@Kathryn Willette It sounds like you are a very kind and giving person! That's so great! I always say, "Don't under estimate us short people!" I was bare over 5' as a freshman in high school but still captain of the soccer team and got things done. If you're focused on what you want you can accomplish anything. Side yards can be difficult. I like to think of them as an extension of the front yard so try and incorporate your front yard landscaping into the side yard.🤛🏻
I have a desaster yard due clay in soil. In my previous home I had a beautiful garden. After five years I've gave up. What plants thrive in clay soil? I what appreciate a video on this. How can I contact you?
M M@. That's a difficult one. This is where I start recommending create elements in landscaping. Elevated beds, planters, hardscaping, different features, etc. You can find me in the description below. :)
I'm from just outside Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and our growing season is very short 3 - 4 months. I own 2 properties: a regular bungalow facing south, with a beautiful lawn. 2 - a lakefront cottage, also facing south. The second last photo in this video is especially interesting to me as I have round stones running beside the cottage; however, the path is under huge spruce trees that lift and twist the stones because of the roots. I'm thinking that I could replace them with a gravel-type path (lined of course with edging). I have a garden right in front of my home that, years ago, my husband built up with 2-tiered wood ties which are rotting and full of ants. I am hoping to use interlocking stones to replace them. Do these sound like difficult jobs,as my husband passed away, as did my son. Would these jobs be difficult to do with male help? Your videos give me so much inspiration....I just love watching! Thanks so much. Barb 😊👷♀️💪👍
@Barb kent. I'm very sorry to hear about your loses. Unfortunately, we all have to go through that but we just don't know when. I lost my dad when he was only 49 and it changed our lives. @mai9. Hello Barcelona! Thank you for watching! I think nowadays we are all "busy". I think it comes down to time allocation. Using our time for what is most important to us. If we do that, we will make time for gardening IF that is something you like. If not, hire someone to maintain the beds and enjoy your free time with other activities. My 2 cents. Thank you for watching!

My lesson learned with lighting is that they didn't bury the wires very well and some was just run along the house above ground. I have almost chopped it in two twice! And I know it's there!
@David Cattin. That's a good one. It definitely should be taken into consideration that the wires should be buried a few inches. Otherwise they are going to show over time in the mulch. When planting for the future, it's always nice to know where the wire is so you don't splice it. Thank you for the comment!

Modesto Ca.. showing my husband a landscaper is not just a kid cutting the grass. He is considering an offer to take over a local company and doesnt realize the potential .
Hi Modesto! Whether you’re maintaining lawns/beds or installing outdoor living spaces, business is business and if you’re good, it’s very lucrative. A friendly warning, be prepared to work your butt off.😊
I have been looking at kitchen cabinets. I am prejudiced for wood because I like the wood grain. What I am seeing is painted wood cabinets. White, black, grey. Ick. They call these modern. We need something easy to clean for the kitchen so what about metal? I have seen some nice white glass with ripples used for cabinets. But who is making something with copper, stainless, etc for modern looking cabinets? I love some of the glass tile backsplashes which apparently are not the thing anymore. Some of these include metal. I want something modern but is there anyone with original ideas out there? I can see why some kitchen designs are just saying hide the kitchen when it isn't in use.
Why would a landscaper mark the gravel path pic install setting up so much? How many skilled and laborer man-hours are you assigning this installation? And, $20K for the fire pit installation pic setting ?? Wow.

@Catthyme. I believe they were coleus. Could be coral bells?
They are heuchera/coral bells. :-) I want to say Purple Palace.

I didn't realize you're in STL. I figured you were West coast. Thanks for the information. Nevermind that the price ranges you're providing have shown me we're not likely to have the kind of money free needed for professional landscaping...still, I appreciate all the tips and information.

I ditched mulch and never regretted it. Too messy, a pain.
I love this! I got sticker shock on my project and more of these would be helpful! :)
@Kassandra.
What’s your thoughts on landscaping weed material?
The “famous” privacy fence picture is my brother’s house. The low hedge is boxwood 😃 I’m enjoying your channel!

Hello from Corralitos, California. I was wondering if you use photoshop in your designs and if it’s difficult to design for a state far from yourself? ( different climates, soils etc).

Is a terra cotta patio okay.
Absolutely! However, I would be selective with it. Goes great with a Spanish or Tuscan style home.
Thank you.
Can you do a few videos on desertscaping? I've got a full acer that's 100% flat and dirt. Looking for how to add some vertical dimensions like small hills to break it up, mid height desert friendly trees/shrubs and a small water feature. Any ideas or tips?
Funny you mention that because my next design video will be a desert/xeriscape example.👍🏼
Terrific! I have always wondered about landscaping - the cost to do like you described. It would be cool though if you then showed...what NOT to do and how money is wasted. (maybe you do on your channel)
Question about the gravel path...very cost effective...but would the gravel get kicked off the path with general use?
I’ll definitely start doing some videos on what not to do. I do something similar called “Bad landscaping” and “things that drive me nuts”. Check those out. Got some good tips in there. The gravel is contained by metal edging along the sides. Can it move...yes... but it stays in the pathway. Thank you for the comment!👍🏼

I always say, "Don't under estimate us short people!" Sir what's the name of your software...
I’m so stumped on the area between my house and the neighbors. It is my only sunny area for a garden.
Side yards can be difficult. I like to think of them as an extension of the front yard so try and incorporate your front yard landscaping into the side yard.🤛🏻
You could look up "side yards garden answer" you'll find lots of options!!
Barb 😊👷♀️💪👍

@mai9. Hello Barcelona! Thank you for watching! I think nowadays we are all "busy". I think it comes down to time allocation. Using our time for what is most important to us.

A friendly warning, be prepared to work your butt off.😊
Here in Central Florida people traditionally do ugly scaping because they don't like to pay even those low end prices.
Hello Florida! Thank you so much for watching and the comment.
