- I’ve never been entirely happy with the results I’ve had casting LM25 aluminium, and I think that’s because I still haven’t got the process quite right. I get a few too many defects, and it doesn’t seem particularly strong when I machine it. This video is a quick experiment to compare the results with ZL12 zinc-aluminium, and after a recommendation from MyFordBoy.

Nice part, good job!
Yaaaaaay for drum hardware!!!
Nice job, thanks for sharing!
Could you cast a snare drum shell?
Looks like you've got decent equipment there; any reason why you chose ZL12 rather than straight forward Aluminium? I was expecting you to bore the inside of the casting, but presumably it was a good enough fit as was. Good stuff.

p.s. a drummer
After trying a few different aluminium alloys, the ZL12 was just for the sake of it and as comparison to the usual aluminium LM25. It’s seems a fair bit heavier than aluminium, but there was no sign of blow holes, it was far nicer to machine, and seemed a lot stronger.
I would love to fabricate my own clamps
Didn't know that you were a bit of a Ringo Starr...
Aren’t you supposed to be cooking for Fred, and not watching your weird relatives RUclips channel ?
David Cambridge I am that unusual man who can and does multi task.
Are you going to treat us to a solo on the skins at Christmas?
