A great book I read on the gifts is "Beginner's Guide to Spiritual Gifts" by Sam Storms. It's a must read!

From a cessationist perspective, I think Tom Schreiner’s Spiritual Gifts is the most succinct and best in tone. He dedicates his book to his friends, John Piper and Wayne Grudem!

Another thing that some may find helpful is that in one Corinthians 12 verses 8:10, in the original Greek, there are four of these manifestations which are in the plural. These are gifts of healings, workings of miracles, discerning‘s of spirits, and kinds of tongues. It really causes verses 4:6 to make sense. There are different gifts, ministries, or operations/activities/results/effect, etc. so a person could have a particular manifestation of the spirit but it may work differently through one then through another.

I am convinced that every single believer has the manifestation of the spirit. One Corinthians 12:7 says that the manifestation of the spirit is given to every man to profit or to benefit the rest of the body. So even if someone is not aware of what way the spirit manifests himself through them, it is there and I believe the more aware we are of the spirits moving and sensitive to him, we will be more aware and he will increase us so that we can build up the body.

At this point, I’m more content to just listen, but I wanted to say, “Thank you for making mention of the ‘guardrails.’ This issue came up in my notes under the label of ‘barriers’ and I think the concept of ‘guardrails’ would be more helpful in some ways. Many blessings…

What's the test for spiritual gifts?

Actually, I’m happy this question came up because what documents I’ve seen so far are more like social profiling from the world’s marketplaces, including the one presented me by a pastor I still respect. So far, the closest Scriptural formulas I have found that come closest to this testing question [besides the Red Letters] are 1 Corinthians 13.
