And if you don't want to, you're looking in the wrong place and need to think about what you really want to do with your limited years. ..or look deeper, if the problem persists look inward and ask "Why don't I want to?" your inner child might reply with "..because I don't deserve it" (Deficient self-esteem) or "..I deserve not to work that hard and still succeed" (Excessive self-esteem) If this is the case therapy is the solution. Despite lacking in therapist feedback RUclips therapy works great for me!
The grind is the biggest problem in work life balance and also why people are quitting in record numbers. People are treated as numbers, not as individuals.
Pretty sure people are quitting en masse as a social movement in repudiation of economic and personal mistreatment by employers amplified by the pandemic, but whatever keeps the pro-corpo myth alive goes 🤷♂️
I constantly need to be reminded of this! The grindset-mindset always seems to come creeping back in for those with really high drive and passion. Thank you for this reminder!
Great video. Nice to have someone acknowledge this. It's all about balance. Grind and chill. It is most definitely a valuable discipline learn how to prioritise both in perfect harmony. Sadly, society does not promote balance, and as a result we all loose something of ourselves in this chaos.
I love this. Yall remember the sabbath? This is what that needs to look like. A community that actually notices our humanity and recognizes when we need the chill. Eso tolson, you my friend, deserve great credit for your greatness
Such a great topic!!!. Doing unpleasant and tiring work every single day, plus feeling guilty about chilling, that's the most terrible thing that a human being can experience through their life, but without experiencing that grind we will never understand the importance of relaxing and having time of ourselves and we will never know that grind is such a poison that kills our live bit by bit, this why people should do what they make them feeling happy, optimistic and more productive without getting bored.
Necessary talk!! Soooo many believe in grind culture not knowing truly how detrimental it is, unfortunately. Burnout is a horrible side effect of grinding however, stroke, Bell’s palsy, heart attack, & other deadly health complications can be a result of grind culture.
The older generations that seem to think working yourself into a grave with no true time for yourself or your happiness really make me sad. I plan on LIVING and enjoying my short time on this earth, not just slaving away for a corporation that doesn’t care about me. That doesn’t make me or anyone else like me lazy (Right now I’m a full time college student with 4 jobs, I KNOW I’m not lazy), we just want to live a life that’s worth living, not live a life serving someone else and building someone else’s wealth.
Remember the older generation's hard work is what ENABLES you to take it easy in the first place. I'm not from that gen but I recognise it was a different time and grinding was the only way to provide something meaningful your children. If you have the luxury and the privelege to not do that now then good on you, but that doesn't make you better than the older generation
this is why we don't listen to others, the information is constantly changing. Grind! Burn! Work Hard Play Hard, oh wait, we were wrong, now chill.... Do what is right for YOU!
Life is too short to be doing things you don't want to do. Everything has to have balance and if you tip the scale too far to one side eventually you'll fall off.
Awesome job! I really enjoyed this. Simply put don't work your life away. I have noticed a shift with the increase of mental health awareness. I look forward to seeing how we can incorporate resting and enjoying the fruits of our labor into the new narrative.
Yes. My 63 year old dad is now retired and considered himself lazy when he say around all day. He is on a crutch now, no job to go to, takes care of his family but still feels lazy when he isn't up moving ALL day long. It's awful when I tell him that he can rest after working since he was 13 years old. 50 years isn't enough i guess.
Consistency will always be the key, ofc you can succeed working a little every day, long term will always be the key, don't take burn out as a cool thing
It might look like it yes, though I think a lot of people cant chill guiltfree because societies pressure is hammering down. Procrastination is a big thing.
@Yummy Spaghetti Noodles yeah sure whatever but having a balance is where you should be at. Because working your fingers to the bone and causing mental illnesses and physical strain might just end your whole life.
Perfect topic and speaker for 1 January! I wish there was as much on the chill as on the grind. For instance, if we are not taught how to do it, how did the speaker make it (he does look like he made it, doesn't he)? And what about some studies and stats on chilling to get us on our way of successfully integrate chill into the grind?
Run your computer at max cpu/ram, and monitor performance. It experiences burnout, too. Reboot does wonders. Humans need reboots too. This is the chill.
@@kendallstark4302 There are apps for it but it is first of all a method of time management. The icons usually look like a tomato because the original pomodoro timer's where actually physical devices and as the name suggests, they were shaped like tomatoes.
Most people think.... Investing in*crypto is all about buying coins and holding, till it rises, 🙅 come on it takes much analysis to be a successful crypto trader.I've made $16,000 in two weeks of trade.
If I stop burning out imma fail pharmacy 😵, cuz all I do is procrastinateeee then I start the grind cramming things up n burning out when there’s no more time left
You should just fix your issue which is procrastinating. You clearly don't want to do that, but why? Address the root cause and the procrastination will go away along with the need to burnout at the last minute all the time. Is it because you wanted another major, did your parents force you to do it? When you graduate, will you enjoy working in that field or will you spend your whole life waiting for weekends and finally retirement? Opt out of a life you will hate, you only have one.
Not really just a comment on this talk but it seems most TED talks are 3/4 talking about an issue, 1/8 quickly “fixing” it, and by that time 1/8 just me wondering why the solution doesn’t seem to have much depth.
It feels like cellphones are the biggest reason we struggle to chill. How often do we just go outside without them and sit on some grass just being present. Instead, even now as I type this, we are doing something on the phone instead of chilling.
It all depends on how we use it, the phone can actually help us chill. Watching videos we enjoy, listening to good music etc are also ways to relax and chill I think.

Okay i see your point, but i think chillin has to be a routine thing. Military means no chill when it comes to corporate war. The grind is what kills apart of you... So you can kill the enemy.
OK Ted Talks have really gone downhill... At surface level this is a cool subject, but the talk itself doesn't add anything valuable to the conversation other than "hey this is a topic that resonates with the young generation". The argument against the grind is weak. The advice on HOW to chill is even more laughable, feels like something you get from a 15 second tiktok video. This is Ted talks for goodness sake! Get the evolutionary biologist to talk about how the grind results in stress levels not seen before in history, and how this impacts fertility, mental health, and human evolution. Talk about how to resolve it through a united effort from all parties. Because end of the day it's not just down to the individual. People have family to support overseas, or the need to bring their clan out of poverty... Good on this guy for trying but having an arts person to talk about such a deep neurological subject is tough
You do know the base level of “grind” and “chill” is not even close to how you think it is buddy? You and people that would go to a Ted talk have a different mindset than your typical person living in North America. Do your research properly before making exuberant claims about the actually extremely lazy workforce today.
@@highcaliber350 yet you can’t truly subject me to being the opposite? Why? Because we all know that chill is more important than grind and grind will lead you to complete sorrow.
@@highcaliber350 do you know why? Because with winning comes humbleness with humbleness comes an integral need to help others/ change the world. Obviously that leads back to grind but still it’s a self defeating prophecy.. we or most of us know the most important answers to the world we just don’t grind towards it properly (or even close to). Whoever in today’s society is actually “grinding” to work their way up the pyramid of different institutions doesn’t know the pillars of those institutions and will automatically work their way to burnout.
