    I had to to take moment to rant about improper care of animals for sale. The sale of turtles under 4 inches is a federal offense. improper care of hatchling turtles can lead to serious illness and possibly death. Always take your pet to your local veterinarian. Soft shell syndrome and Metabolic bone disease is just one of many serious illnesses that turtles can get.
    *UPDATE*
    Unfortunately the turtle in this video passed away just one day after recording.

    My aunt brought a baby RES from the side of a road. We had no idea it was illegal.
    Foolish me kept the thing in its carrying case with no basking and UV. Poor thing was forgotten some days. It has soft shell, shell rot, you name it.
    2 years of suffering. How did it survive? I have no idea.
    Fast forward to year 3. I did research and felt terrible. Brought him a 20 gal with the proper things (including a UV) he struggled to swim. Took him days to learn how to swim again.
    Year 4. Turtle is doing great. Shell may have a few scars from us being naive, but I'm glad he has a better life. I just need to update his tank.
    His name is "Trooper". He earns that name.
    Sorry, Trooper. I'm glad you're doing better!

    Can you make a video for people that have purchased baby turtles from the flea market or the side of the road. Explaining how we should care for them or should we take them to a local pond. I’m just saying this in general for everyone. It’s not like I bought a baby turtle from the side of the road.... I’m just asking for everyone....

    I rescued a baby turtle from a neighbours child who bought it on his way home from school from a market. The poor think has respiratory infection and can't swim properly and is gasping for air. We have no reptile vests in my city (they only treat dogs and cats). I live in a hot climate so temp for it is OK. I am keeping it in natural light with very clean water in an area it can bask in the sun, or cool off in the shallow water which is shaded. I have fallen in love with the little guy and don't know if he will make it. I hope with the warm temperatures, high quality food and dry docking him over the nights will help him recover. He still seems quite strong, his shell is hard and he is always willing to eat, so I hope that is a good sign.

    I own two baby RES,
    I bought one with my cousin about roughly 2-3 years ago, on the side of the road, I had no Idea it was illegal.
    everything was going amazing with my little RES, she ( she, i thought atleast ) had a great little set up and I got some help from my other cousin that works at pet-co on veggies to feed " her" until I went to the store.
    eventually I moved her into about a 20 roughly gallon tank..my care for " her" was amazing but I was very inconsistant back then, and her tank would get dirty and I'd leave it for days without a clean.
    eventually then, I brought " her" care right back up, she was doing AMAZING and was growing alot!
    around a year later, I re-homed a turtle I got from one of my friends ( they had a lot of animals and could no longer provide a great home for it )
    so I was doing a great job with both of the babies, and moved them into a 40gallon breeder tank!
    so now to the present, turns out today I just found out the first turtleI got was a male, and the second one I got is a female, they're names are Sheldon and Nina :)
    so now I take GREAT care of them and they get they're tank cleaned every week or every other week, they eat lettuce, crickets , meal worms and more!
    They've both increased in size and are doing amazing now.

    I have a few questions. What food would you recommend that’s high in calcium? Should your uvb light cover the turtles basking area or the entire tank? Should you turn your uvb light off at night? Thank you

    • @jordanmilitello4975
      @jordanmilitello4975 4 года назад

      Another thing, should you have a uvb light along with a heating light? Or does the uvb provide enough heat.

    • @TheRedlandReptiles
      @TheRedlandReptiles  4 года назад +2

      Their normal pellets you buy at pet stores are fine for basic care (if they are not already sick). If the tank is indoors with air conditioning, then ideally it should have both heat bulb and UVB light. It can be both over the basking area so they can go to it when they want to. The UVB light does not need to be on at night. I recommend a timer set to be on 12 hours and off 12 hours so that they have even day and night cycles. Again all of this is based on an already healthy pet that you want to keep healthy as it grows. If your pet is already having problems it should see a vet for it's individual needs.

    I was given 4 baby RES from my job. I was planning to just keep them until they are big enough to let go at a local park. I made them a temporary habitat, but keep it outside on my screened in patio. It' gets lots of light. I tried to make the set up as close to the home they have at my job (the live in a courtyard full of plants and a small pond). It this a good idea? The first three were given to me at the same time. At first they didn't move around much, but now they are always swimming. The 4th is the smallest and I'm still working on him interacting with the other and eating more.

So I’m going to feed it a variety of food and only feed it 3 times a day to stop it from being overweight and then imma find a place in the sun for it to bask properly so that it can heal and fight off this disease and shell rot. Your slider turtle is probably at a phase that you can still help it. Going to your closest exotic veterinarian is always the best thing to do. In general, it would squish in like rubber with very little force applied. Regardless of how bad though, It is always worth trying and providing the best you can with diet and lighting. I hope this helps.

    I have two red eared sliders from a market like this, I have taken them both to my local vet once I noticed one had swollen eyes and wouldn’t eat, granted I had inadequate conditions for the first few months. My vet gave me an antibiotic and didn’t provide much insight or much help on how to heal the turtle. Fast forward a week, I set up a proper enclosure and one of the turtles had opened his eyes and started to eat. As he\she started to get better, my other turtle has fallen ill with the same symptoms, no mucus, no weak bones, swims/floats okay. Yet it spends too much time basking in a lazy position with its eyes swollen. Do you have any advice or tips for me? Or a reference I can get digital help from, I have tried home remedies and veterinarian medicine, successfully for one turtle but not so much for the other. Thank you:)

    • @TheRedlandReptiles
      @TheRedlandReptiles  4 года назад

      Sorry about the delayed response. Some veterinarians have more resources for exotic pets than others. Also, some individual animals have better immune systems than others even if they are from the same family. Unfortunately, without physically examining your pet for more clues I can't say I know what else you can try. It sounds like you've done a lot. My apologies for not being more helpful.

    Is the carrot soak effective for baby turtles to treat them or get them to eat ? My turtle has a swollen eyes and i bought some drops for her but she still like tired,bask alot and never go to swim.. what should i do?? I don't know any pet doctor !

    • @TheRedlandReptiles
      @TheRedlandReptiles  4 года назад +1

      Honestly, I've never heard of a carrot soak. If the eyes are already swollen then they should see a doctor for antibiotics and antiinflammatories. Basking is good but heat only will not be enough. They NEED UV spectrum light. And you should get baby turtle pellets. If you need to, soak the pellets and try to force feed the mush.
      Get on google, type in your address and the word veterinarian and you should get a list of veterinarians closest to your location. Also, in the pellets or the mush you make, you should add a powder calcium and vitamin D3 supplement. The food, UV lightbulbs, and supplements they sell all online, even on amazon.

      Very limited amount of flexibility along the edges is normal, but their plastron (bottom half) especially, shouldn't be mushy. If you are worried though, it's always better to ask your Veterinarian because they can physically asses it themselves.

      I got mine when they were hatchlings almost two months ago. And in the beginning they would t eat, one of them would bite some pellets here and there but the other would not eat at all. I tried vegetables different pellets, nothing worked. BUT THEN I got them meal worms from pet co and they ate it with out hesitation then after that they started eating pellets.

      Moral of the story try worms 😂. If not very tiny feeder fish which should be hard since they can’t swim fast yet. So worms are definitely the go to.

    My turtle has a shell which is a little soft but I heard that baby turtles have soft shell
    He is a very healthy turtle his shell is not as soft as the one in the video
    I bought it from a pet shop which had only a basking platform and no other essentials like uvb, heater,filter,heating lamp
    Though I give him
    Powdered egg shells powder sprinkled on his food twice a week for calcium
    And natural sunlight every morning 2 hours
    He his healthy except his shell is just a little soft

    Hello I know this vid is old but my baby turtle I’ve had since March just started getting a soft shell at the end today and Ik it’s not supposed to do that my grandmother has ordered calcium dust and she has a uv light I don’t want her dying so I wanna know if u have tips because she’s still very young and I want her to live so if u have any tips I hope u could recommend to point out i am a kid but i have been doing research about turtles since I’ve got her and Ik that’s not normal which is why I am trying to get tips!

    • @TheRedlandReptiles
      @TheRedlandReptiles  2 года назад +1

      Calcium and a UVB light are the most important things. As long as it is still eating you still have a pretty good chance of saving them. Once they stop eating, it gets VERY difficult to get them to start again. If they stop eating. Your only hope is taking it to a vet but at this point it sounds like you are making the right adjustments to it's care. 12 hour day and night cycles are always recommended.

      @Avitski2837 2 года назад

      @@TheRedlandReptiles so I’m very stressed about it but I’m trying so hard to wait for the calcium dust also I’m very positive it’s her diet that made that happen we’ve been giving her pellets that’s supposed to have calcium and other stuff and dried shrimp is what we’ve been giving her because we can’t afford lettuce or strawberries rn to keep her diet balanced so if I get calcium dust and it’s on her food and it’s in the water is that’s bad or is she still getting calcium because it’s in the water and it’s on her.also I have a uv light that goes to her basking area and she goes on it also but she also sleeps a lot so i don’t think that’s good either plus we can’t even go to a vet cause just for a check that’s a lot 50-65 dollars and we don’t have the money rn.

    • @TheRedlandReptiles
      @TheRedlandReptiles  4 года назад +1

      You're right, a lot of times people aren't told many things when they purchase an animal. That is why research is key. Before purchasing or adopting any animal, one should always do research as to what that animal will need. Unfortunately, not all pet stores or flea markets have the right information. That's why we make these videos. To try to help folks learn about the animals and the proper care required. 👍

    So what you do not buy it and then leave it to suffer and not buy it help it like the owner of that turtle?

    • @TheRedlandReptiles
      @TheRedlandReptiles  2 года назад

      These places sell them illegally. You need a license to sell animals and since many years ago it is actually illegal to sell this species in South Florida (where we are). If the money isn't coming in, they won't sell them. So unfortunately, regardless of the state of the creature, it is better to not give these people money. If you see a creature suffering, you can report it to the proper authorities for selling without a license and animal abuse through negligence.

    • @TheRedlandReptiles
      @TheRedlandReptiles  4 года назад

      That would be considered HYPERcalcemia rather than HYPOcalcemia. It's a little different of a situation and is treated differently as well.

    • @TheRedlandReptiles
      @TheRedlandReptiles  4 года назад +1

      Hypercalcemia = too much calcium circulating through the body.
      Hypocalcemia = too little calcium circulating. Long periods of hypocalcemia will throw off the balance of calcium and phosphorus which then turns into what we know as Metabolic Bone Disease. It is characterized by malformation of the skeleton and shell. When this happens it affects the organs and can cause pain which tends to be a big reason any animal stops eating.
      And I'm sorry but I don't know anything that can be done with certainty or dosages without doing a physical evaluation of the patient in person. Even then only an actual doctor can prescribe any medications and give a true diagnosis.
      I can only really advise that you need to provide proper UV lighting, thermoregulation, and proper diet.

      Not just out, they should have a tank and a dry half of the tank under the UV light bulb and the water, cooler side of the tank. That way they can regulate their temperature as they need. If you just leave them out they can overheat and will have nowhere to cool off. Some shrimp is okay but the turtle pellets are better and should be the majority because they have all of the nutrients they need in each meal.

      I honestly can't be positive from the photo.
      If it is shell rot you can spot clean once a day with a cotton ball or "Qtips" or "cotton tipped applicators" and some dilute Chlorhexidine solution (often labeled for animal wounds). It has antibacterial and antifungal properties.
      If it gets worse or if your turtle stops eating entirely, it might need antibiotics and should go to a veterinarian.
