      Exactly. How stupid

    • @flipnap2112
      @flipnap2112 2 года назад +34

      @@imiy I mean, it is weird but sometimes theres a good use, for matching etc. But when I see people putting fishing line on their lenses to get that "anamorphic lens flare look" I just.. I dunno its like missing the point. I wish people would investigate the reasons they want their stuff to look a certain way. Even 24FPS. I mean there were a LOT of DP's that wouldve killed for a 60FPS shot of a large scenery pan back in the day. So many of us are so busy chasing "the look" that we sometimes forget what were "looking at", so to speak.

    • @ColoristFoundry
      @ColoristFoundry  2 года назад +36

      Agreed. Chasing a look/effect is an empty pursuit, unless you know what you are after.

    • @JimRobinson-colors
      @JimRobinson-colors 2 года назад +4

      Yes, a lot of the older pros considered Halation as something that was a weak part of the film process - i.e. a mistake. Wouldn't be the first time that people copied mistakes and they become part of the overall look.
      I think that if you notice the halation, you overdid it. A lot of people are confusing and using strong halation when they should be reaching for the Glow OFX

      @@imiy It's not stupid, imperfection adds character. In music, the imperfect sound of analog recording devices humanizes the sound. The limitations of recording devices in the 60s were crucial to the melancholy sound of the Beach Boys for example. Though I don't hate the sound of modern pop across the board, a lot of pop production makes the music sound like a mouth full of toothpaste or super sterile. Imperfection can be implemented across any art form and it can add a lot of character if done correctly

    What I noticed from your shots is that they are way more sharp than what film could get you, especially when shooting 16mm. A slight blur + a bit of film grain go a long way. One tip I have about sharpness and grain is that your image detail can never be sharper than the diameter of one grain particle. Grain actually behaves like a mosaic, meaning that each grain particle is a tile that composes the final image. The larger the grain, the less detail you get. So if you add large grain on digital footage, remember to blur the footage a bit.

    • @ColoristFoundry
      @ColoristFoundry  2 года назад +18

      Fully agreed. However would like to point out, we disable our blur node for youtube exports, even disable grain for certain shots. We try to showcase only the colors of our PFE. In the PDF we provide along with the product, blur node is marked as one of the recommended settings :)

    • @eladbari
      @eladbari 2 года назад +3

      Biggest problem is- that no matter how high quality you render out your footage - uploading a video with a grain layer on it- comes out mushy, blotchy, as the compression of youtube / vimeo / whaterver- just can't handle all of that tiny ever-changing info of the grain running around. Not sure there's a real solution to it...

    • @bluerabbit1236
      @bluerabbit1236 Год назад +1

      @@eladbari You cannot do that with a free grain overlay. You need authentic film scan. Then it looks sick no matter where you upload it.

    • @eladbari
      @eladbari Год назад +2

      @@bluerabbit1236 No problem getting access to real film grain scans. Not the free stuff. But, that's not the issue. The issue is that there's so much changing detail in this grain that compression of uploading to web can't handle all this info as they cram everything into a smaller file for streaming.
      1. Guess maybe only 4K videos are allowed for more bandwidth [at least on youtube]- so maybe blowing up 1080 footage to 4K and uploading that may help
      2. Wonder how those artificial FilmConvert plugins work on footage. Anyways, the problem is that grain's character changes when it's on shadows vs. highlights on your image. And blending modes of grain footage don't fully mimic that feature, so grain looks flat sometimes..

    • @DaCarnival
      @DaCarnival Год назад +4

      Saying that "your image detail can never be sharper than the diameter of one grain particle" is not entirely correct. First of all the grain is not uniform in size, and secondly for 1 second of film you have 24 frames, and therefor 24 different grain patterns. This mean the resolution over time is actually higher than the resolution of any single frame, as the detail we see is the combined detail of the frames that persist in our perception.
