In this video, I share with you the deeper conversations during my filmed visit with her.
We talked about the role of women in the Hasidic community, the community's insularity, Pearl's story, the Satmar rebbe, remembering the holocaust, Williamsburg in the past, and much more.

Frida, my name is Diego Olszak (hebrew name Moishe Shmuel ben iosef/sara). I became a baal tshuve when I was 12 years old. I have studied in yeshives in Buenos Aires (I keep on living in Argentina). I am nusaj ashkenazi sefarad (that makes me kind of chassidish). I went twice to Jerusalem to study in a yeshive for baalei tshuva called Ohr Somach. I also studied at Mir (famous yeshive in Israel, many of the pioneers came from Uruguay and from Japan). By the time I became 20 years old, a rab here in Argentina tried to send me to a yeshive in Benei Brak and wanted me to sign a document so both of them could use my sejuiot (at that time the Israeli goverment gave "rights" to jewish people that decided to make allyah in the form of money so you could buy a house and get settle, discounts whenever you bought anything, etc). When I understood this, I became very angry. This came at a moment that I wanted to study medicine. So, I got slowly kick off my comunity (I was an apikores). I tried going to a Chabad comunity, but I did not feel it was my home. Actually I left everything, not because I became an MD, but because I felt expelled. I know that you did not want to seem or appear disrespectfull, but why didn't you ask her about the unorthodox movie/book? Satmar is a very radical sect in orthodox judaism, such as toldos aharon, Gur, etc. Being a zionist is not wrong. I can understand that being a secular zionist may not be as good also. The love for Israel is in the Toireh as well. If not, look what happened to Moshe Rabeinu? After showing a second of lack of faith and hitting a rock for water, he was denied the entrance to Israel as a punishment. Pearl said that everyone should live according to the Toireh. What is she doing to accomplish that? I do not want to intrude or guess about your life, but you left... Maybe the crazy costumes and rituals and the fact that they do not know anything about the outside world did the trick for you. We have Satmar here in Argentina. I do not want to have anything to do with them either. Some may seem special and outgoing, but do not be mistaken. They are all alike. Doesn't the world need lawyers, doctors, policemen, etc? If you are not allow to study further from elementary school...

Frieda, can you tell us which one is the book about the Holocaust that Pearl mentioned?
I’m an Iranian, non religious, Texan and I am just fascinated by Pearl. I am a corporate woman in a high earning role, I work so much, I’m in my mid 30s and I am just starting to try to have children. I envy Pearls life. Truly. This clear understanding of the roles of the sexes and the trusting of your husband to provide is not as bad as we have made it seem. Thank you for sharing Pearl with us.

Interesting that you seem to be favoring “understanding of the role of the sexes and trusting your husband to provide” as a high earning corporate mid thirties woman trying now to have a baby. Maybe it seems nice to you now in your current privileged position but “women knowing their role” and relying on men to provide for their lives doesn’t work out well for the demographic historically. There will be some women who have nice lives buts that’s true of any lifestyle. Doesn’t mean the grass is greener.
@@T_WC123No , it does not ! So many women are left with no skills , no understanding of finances and dumped .I received my tertiary education and had children in my twenties . Then once the kids were at school , I refreshed , worked part time , then full time . I retired to look after a grandchild . Women are better off having their children while younger and more fertile , then continuing with their careers or education . You have your grandchildren at an age to enjoy but still can enjoy your career . Too many couples live together without a future commitment.
You know Tina, you have the same in your own culture and religion. Doesn't matter if you are sunni or shiamuslim, so why are you envious of this woman? Go back to Islam, you will have what Pearl has, a relation to Allah, a sound familylife, peace of mind.
I wish more people would be tolerant of those who believe in the male and female roles. The world does not have to believe only be respectful of those who do.
I think most people do, like the overwhelming majority, but it can become an understandably sensitive issue for many people who were pressured or forced into those roles. I like living very much by what many would call traditional/biological gender roles, but I deeply dislike when others insist of how others should live. Whats import is what makes the individual and family happiest :)
It’s less that people aren’t tolerant of male and female roles, it’s more that in some instances it’s not allowed for people to exist outside of those roles while still keeping their community and family. That’s the problem.

@@codename495 first of all our upbringing is that we all are raised this way and 99.9 percent want this. To raise a family and get married is the course of life. In the secular world it doesn’t work this way. It’s hard to understand if you aren’t in it. Then if someone isn’t ready to get married then nobody is forcing them. Many girls get married at 20-22 instead of 18-19 because they want to work a job and have some years between school and family. The parents are supportive of that. But at the age of 23-24 you will not find a girl who isn’t looking to get married. The boys wait for the girls to be ready. It’s harder for them to stay in yeshiva and wait for a match. If they become 20-21 they sometimes leave and take a job. If a person doesn’t want to have children they will have to find a person who they can marry who agrees with them and the cases of such people are zero because we value family and children. The culture of children are a burden is the exact opposite of the outside world. Or the culture of children are expensive and will cramp my lifestyle is also the same. The culture of relations before marriage doesn’t exist. The culture of living together before marriage is non existent. The culture of I don’t know if I’m ready while your young years go by is not a thought in our minds. Some couples waits a year or so before having kids. Some couples want kids right away. It’s thier decision. Just like someone who doesn’t want kids in the world needs to find a match who shares the same views. And just like a secular person who wants to stay a virgin won’t live with a man before marriage. It’s the same thing. And if somebody wants a radically different life they leave. They aren’t kicked out. They leave because what they are looking for doesn’t exist in our culture

Pearl has been so lucky in her life. And as a result has an idealistic view of her community's way of life. It's wonderful to hear her perspective and her wisdom but it is certainly restricted. I am a Jewish grandmother and I thank you for this excellent interview. 😊💜

Pearl is an absolutely amazing storyteller! I can listen to her all day long and learn something. She makes me want to become more religious.
I'm 65 and was born and raised in Washington Heights (northernmost part of the New York City borough of Manhattan) which also encompassed a significant survivor community... Primarily from Germany.
My family came years before the Holocaust, ב׳׳ה. The persecution, discrimination, pogroms and killings of Jews had always been a part of European culture... but the reign of Hitler, יִמַּח שְׁמוֹ, was on a scale, evil and savagery up till then, nearly unprecedented. As children, we knew and didn't know about the Holocaust. As kids, tattooed numbers on someone's arm was an all too familiar sight, but we were sensitive to know not to inquire, lest we cause the person unnecessary intrusion and pain .
As an adult, I learned much, much more in-depth about this history in college, Eli Wiesel,ע״ה, was among my instructors.
I can see how living a life that if pre-ordained and laid out from birth to death and adhering to a sharply defined role can be very secure and reassuring to many.
I appreciate Pearl’s fervor and passion with regards to her life, her role, her community and her religion. But l wonder how those who don’t fit in and want more than this regimented lifestyle deal with this. Maybe they have to leave just to remain sane.
I personally couldn’t even fathom living this way myself but l respect Pearl a lot and it’s nice to see someone so happy, content and self assured.
Pearl is a brilliant woman and treasure to the Jewish people. May Hashem grant her and her family all the blessings.

Pearl is soooo charming! I’m the son of an OTD father and a gentile mother. My father NEVER talked about his Jewish upbringing and I was raised as a Christian. Pearl is so lovely and convincing, she makes me want to convert to Judaism! LOL I really wish I had more contact with my Jewish family and culture. These videos help a lot to fill that gap I feel. We always hear about people wanting to leave the Hasidic sect, but it’s so interesting to hear someone who is happy and loves their life express their point of view. Thank you Pearl for opening your house and life to us, and you, Freida, for doing this! G-d bless you both!
I've encountered the same problems in life, I have the same heritage as you. Jewish people are smart they keep to themselves. I was thinking if I'm not in they're community, I'd understand my heritage and religion easier but if not, it's hard to find them.
Frieda, I love all the conversations you shared with Pearl. I'm a Christian clergywoman, and my work is centered on supporting people in consciously living their beliefs. A client and I looked at what it meant to live the Torah life in ancient Israel, so hearing Pearl talk about how she and her family live this life now, with joy and gratitude, spoke to me. Thank you. both.
To hear Miss Pearl say, "A whole generation, wiped out" made me draw a breath. I am in my 50s. I learned about the holocaust in World History in school. I am not Jewish. I am Christian. I thought I understood the gravity of the event. No! Miss Pearl gave me that insight.
I am German, and even I didn't know this particular detail, or the fact that Hungarian Jews got the full extent of industrialized murder after Polish Jews got an earlier version of the Holocaust that had a higher survival rate. These details technically don't make a difference for the overall extent of the crime, which is probably why they are not taught in German schools. But they should be, because of the force with which they hit you in the heart even after learning about numerous individual fates has created a certain amount of scarring.
The resilience with which the survivors have created what seem to be essentially Transylvanian and Ukrainian early 20th century Jewish villages, thriving and rapidly expanding in the middle of New York, is absolutely amazing and awe-inspiring.
Love, love, love Pearl. Can only imagine what a great wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother she is! Wish I could be adopted.
As someone who has no community, I do somewhat envy this life.
Perhaps you envy a fantasy - real life is often quite mundane?
She is a beautiful soul. Good insight and full of love for her people.

Many of my friends and classmates were the children of Holocaust survivors. Pearl just brought the profound consequences of this horror home when she talked about the 20 year gap. Thank you and Pearl for an engrossing discussion.
I could have wept when she said she had been born in a Camp in Austria in 1949, just two years of age... God bless her and her family. She's a wonderful, beautiful mother and woman in every respect. I don't share the same faith yet admire everything about her and am enjoying learning of their way of life and customs. Why does anyone set themselves against others in the world? My own grandmother was incarcerated in a Camp although not of Jewish faith, she was four years old, she doesn't even know where it was. She was there for four years, nothing to eat except 'black beetroots' and suffered lifelong digestion issues thereafter. I miss her very much these past 24 years, I am in my sixties.
Pearl is a true gem and I appreciate her heart and her honesty.

I have to agree with Pearl. She is speaking truth. I’m glad I have raised and invested my life to my family. As a woman of faith I like living in my community of faith. The secular world is on a different path and mindset. I am thankful we live in a free country that I can choose my community and others can choose theirs.

I am a non Jewish lady, I went with my family to the Holocaust museum in Washington DC about 15 years ago. We went into the children’s section for less than five minutes. We couldn’t even look at the photos in the hallway going into the exhibition. We left the building, and went outside in our tears my husband and our teenage sons. I don’t blame those who have lost family to have a hard time with this. Yet we must teach our young not to hate other humans,not to defame them them first as some political parties do , so the masses will hear the dog whistle s to fight against some other religious folks for the way they believe in God or the Name they call Him .
As someone who has been observant for almost 31 years… and very secular prior, it was women like Pearl that helped guide me to learn and there is sooooo much to learn and actuate in one’s life. I’ve also seen dysfunction in the secular and observant world…. With that being said, I don’t want to live in a dysfunctional secular world… I chose to live an observant life with a creative flair like Pearl. I am grateful to you for your videos because ( I see at least in my humble opinion) you are a shliach showing others a view ( hopefully with respect and kindness ) of our lives . I look forward to more of Pearl and her friends !! I also look forward to hearing your story (?) and how maybe you might be coming full circle in healing and enjoy life whereby we are not on not so opposite sides of viewpoints . You are also in a position to be an advocate for us …you don’t have to adopt the previous garb or traditions but you can help bridge …. Other advocates are Tovia singer who works with not only fellow Jews but he is finding himself attracting an educated, thoughtful Christian audience who are hungry to understand Torah ,albeit from a noahide perspective. It is a light onto the nations perspective that is an honorable mission. A non Jewish you tuber who has opened the Torah world to the world is Peter santenello… he does a fabulous job of reaching out and showing our world in a respectful and creative way. Hatzlocha … regardless of which group one feels a kindred connection with ….there are many ways to live a Torah life …this is the messianic age indeed.
Agreed with just about everything you said....but, as a Christian, I find Tovia Singer hostile towards Christians and not going to be a bridge to both groups. The only Christian people, I've seen agreeing with him are those who have left Christian faith and become agnostic or even atheist..
I was raised Southern Baptist but never got the concept of the virgin Mary. I had friends in high school and college who were Jewish and so I pursued converting with my children. I do not regret it. Thank you for sharing your upbringing and view of the Hasidic world with us.
The Virgin Mary was a devout Jewish woman who was singularly blessed by the Most High because She was to become the Mother of the Redeemer. In eternity, She is at Her Son’s side, and is mankind’s greatest intercessor with God. She is Daughter of the Father, Spouse of the Holy Spirit and Mother of the Son. Catholics and Orthodox venerate (not worship) Her, as all Christians did prior to the Reformation. Her role has been downplayed and even denigrated by some Protestant sects, so it is understandable that you would not “get the concept” of Her. The Evil One fears and hates Her because of her God-given power to defeat Him. A specific imminent event will make Her role, and the absolute truth about many other faith issues, abundantly clear to all, so I am taking this opportunity to briefly introduce Our Blessed Mother to those who don’t know Her. Pax Christi. 📿
@@jmj5388 In my long life of religious study and devotion I have never heard of the BVM be described as Daughter of the Father and Spouse of the Holy Spirit. She is never noted as such in theological or liturgical literature or any hymn or prayer. Yes, She is the Mother of the (incarnated) Son and thus Theotokos. But God the Father is no more her father than He is father to all of us, that is, of all humanity. Her only spouse was St. Joseph. The Holy Spirit made it possible for her womb to give birth without a man's seed but in the human form to God in the hypostasis of the Son. The three hypostases (appearances or single substances) of the Trinity are not some completely different beings since God is one "ousia," one essence or being. God only interferes in the natural order to manifest His profound love and care for His people. But this is not done in a way that would enslave or hypnotize, as it were, humans to the world of the miraculous. God always wants us to be free to decide for ourselves whether we want to live in harmony with Him and are not manipulated to do so. To those who prefer doubting the Lord, the mystery of the Son's human birth will be dismissed since it requires intense faith and unification with our Creator and Heavenly Father.
Let me make here an aside on the big difference between Christianity and Judaism that is made apparent in this interview. Judaism prescribes exact rules of behavior which people must strictly adhere to with little will involved. Christ, on the other hand, resanctified our human dignity in being given full power to decide how we want to organize our life so as to make our way back to God. Judaism is about the Law, Christianity is about free will.
I met an orthodox Jewish woman hiking in New Hampshire. She was a riot and we bonded immediately. I wish we were still in touch, however, through dialogue like this we are.

Thank you Frieda. One reason I left Lubavitch after high school was because I was no longer allowed to study. I was expected to marry, which was ok, but I wanted to study and no one would allow it. Thank you for these insights into Satmar.
Ironically, my Orthodox mother studied Talmud in Crown Heights yeshiva (elementary school). But that was many years ago. They’re not teaching it to girls anymore these days. However, I do know women who studied Talmud on their own. It’s not forbidden. It’s just that women are usually focused more on being good wives and mothers.
Pearl could give lessons on youtube. So much wisdom. When she said she did not have an opinion, she defers to the Torah, she is perfectly on target. I am currently reading Dennis Prager's The Rational Bible; Genesis and Exodus. I do not know if it the world would be a Utopia but it would come much closer than what we currently have.

Bravo. If women had this role philosophy in the secular world, there would be far less trouble with young people.
Secular people may not be able to understand Pearl's perspective on life, but I believe she has been very blessed. She has a lot of wisdom to share, for those who will listen.
I am a pagan older woman but as a child I had friends of all religions, I have always had an interest in people's beliefs and customs. I worked as a lifeguard in a place only woman were allowed to come to, an orthodox lady talked with me everyday about her life and her children, ever since I have wanted to spend a sabbath with such a family, but only because I see it as beautiful. My god is nature, I believe we are all equal and how each and everyone of us should not judge, to judge is ignorant.
I am 29 years old and have been pagan since I was a preteen. I share your same beliefs of nature, spirt, sun and moon and I too have an appreciation of the core of different religions. ❤

Pearl is what every Hasidic woman in Williamsburg should strive to be. She is an exemplar of kindness and acceptance. I wish they would make the younger generation more like her 💕
They are but because they are young vibrant mothers they are busy and don’t have the time or the wisdom how to explain thier lifestyle like pearl does.

Pearl is just lovely. To be as happy as she seems is my goal. I’m 61,Christian,married,3 daughters,grandchildren. I’ve been a housewife for years,I feel that my husband and children never appreciated my work. And tend to treat me like I’m less.
I'm sorry about that Janet. God knows your work and your sacrifice. He knows your heart. At the end of the day, you have a legacy that will last for over a hundred years : it's them. They may not realize that now, but they will eventually.
What you have been doing as a housewife is so essential to the wellbeing of a family. Keeping a household in order and having meals ready is a 14 hour a day 7 days a week responsibility. If your kids are out of the house and you have some free time, pursue your interests-whatever that might be. It will keep your mind occupied and focused on your own well being.

Wonderful conversation 💕 the question of why that Rabbi survived is interesting. For someone that meant so much to so many and gave so much comfort he was meant to go on and be who he became to so many.
I’m the same age as the Hasidic woman but was raised in a secular Jewish home. When I asked about the Holocaust I was told “better you shouldn’t know.” Later I volunteered at the US Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. In preparation for that position I underwent training under the stewardship of a Museum historian & was assigned a lot of reading, so that’s where my limited understanding comes from today.

I work with many hasidics from Williamsburg, now this lady Pearl has personality, she is the only Hasidic women that I have ever come across with personality the rest that I have to deal with at different offices are robotic and scary. I know for a fact as I have been working with them since 2014. Pearl is a breathe of fresh air and if they were like her the hasidic community would be well liked. And the hasidic community shuts out everyone else and doesn’t want to be a part of the community. And the woman are treated like 2nd class citizens. Pearl talks it up, but in real life I see them and hear it. But lovely interview and she is a good woman.

It's incredible how food transcends cultures. I used to work in a convent full of Lithuanian nuns (some of whom also escaped the Holocaust) and their favorite food was kugel! Every birthday we would have kugel with apple sauce or sour cream and borscht.
Of all the people I gave tours to from all over the world, the Lithuanians were our closest cousins in Kugel. It surprised me because much of the food in Williamsburg is Hungarian, but apparently kugel is really big in Lithuania.

I really enjoy your videos. I am a very traditional and devout Roman Catholic who appreciates any person who lives their faith and is not ashamed to be different from the corrupt world we live in. I think Pearl is a gem and her family is very lucky to have her as is her community. If only Catholic women could hear her truth and her insights about the beauty of raising a family and the lifelong joy this commitment brings us. But alas our Catholic world is being destroyed by modernists and we don't have enough Pearls to keep us focused on what really matters. I would love it if you took Pearl up on her offer to introduce you to her friends and family, so you can have more in depth conversations about their lives and their perspective on life. I adore Pearl.
I am only 4 years younger than Pearl, and her comments about the important role of women being focused on raising up the next generation was and often still is very common to how people of my generation thought and believed, and often still do. The old saying, “the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world” comes from that philosophy of the importance of motherhood. Religious people of all faiths included the raising of the next generation so they would continue the Faith, and non-religious people concentrated on imparting the hard-working and ethical behavior and good manners to the next generation, and all of those would include imparting cultural norms to them as well, sometimes through cooking and handing recipes, etc.
As for remaining separate from the world, although most Christians (and maybe some Jews too) don’t do that physically, more devout Christians do have that as a mindset, to live our faith and not compromise our beliefs, and be good examples to the world and especially to the next generation in our families and churches.
Pearl is so right, if you understand how massive and important a woman’s role is, why would you want to neglect that and pursue another role?

@@FriedaVizelBrooklyn thank you. By the way, I am Christian, but absolutely believe Judaism is a “foundation” for Christianity. The difference is that we believe the Messiah has come in the person of Jesus. I think it is essential to understand what Christians call the “Old Testament and old covenant”, in order to truly understand what Jesus taught, and what we call the “new covenant”, which is essentially God writing the Law on our hearts (Like He promised in the many of the prophets’ books) and giving the Spirit to every Christian instead of only to a few. Orthodox Judaism is full of ritual, but I see love for God and understanding spiritual things in people like Pearl and Sara of the Frum It Up channel. Like those two ladies say often, it is all about love for God and love for family.

I just want to point out some ideas that you seemed to misinformed about Judaism:
*I’m not coming to critsize your beliefs at all and I’m fact I admire ppl who stay true to their religion (whether we disagree or not)
The two religions differ on many ideas not just the recognizing j as Th Messiah.
Not to get so deep here but even for starters
We disagree on the concept of what the messiahs is and his job.
There are Christina sects that say j is a form or a part of G-d - if so then we disagree on the entire concept of what G-d is.
Christianity would actually be considered idolatry according to our laws.
@@esthersteier6840 yes. I understand that, and it’s exactly why he kept getting in trouble. It’s the Christian concept of “the Trinity” (which kinda describes God as “3 Persons in One”- which to try and describe God in human terms is a bit pathetic, how do you put words to a Spirit? - vs the Jewish description in the Shema (do I understand it right?), which says the Lord God is ONE.
I only mentioned what I did because it’s the very basic and it would take days and days to explain completely. But I do believe the 10 commandments received at Sinai by Moses, IS the foundation for what Christians are supposed to learn and live. For example adultery is one thing as a “deed”, but goes to a whole deeper level if you even lust in your heart without touching someone. The commandments are supposed to be written in our hearts and the Spirit is supposed to influence how we think and behave. I used to have the impression that Jewish people just “do rituals”, not necessarily have a heart change- until hearing Frum it Up by Sara, and now Pearl. I think it’s very beautiful.

Love listening and learning, so much to learn ,I am Christian but totally respect the struggles of the Jewish communities , and love the family dynamics of the close families❤
I'm also a Christian but I have a deep love and respect for the Hebrew Bible. I'm currently making my way through Robert Alter's 3-volume Hebrew Bible that includes his translation notes. It's really life-changing and I have a better understanding of much of what Pearl says about her faith because of my studies.
What a beautiful woman Pearl is. Physically, intellectually and emotionally. I am not a Jew but I couldn't agree more that the greatest thing a woman can do is assume the role of wife and mother as raising the next generation well is the greatest gift we can give the World. Thank you for introducing Pearl to us. It is an honor.
I understand completely the reason for keeping their community separate. When you live amidst the outside world, it is very easy to move away from the traditions of your religion, adopt a different life style and lessen the numbers in the Hasidic community. The roles men and women live in that community, and their beliefs and traditions, often fly in the face of the modern, outside world. But, their strong ties to family, community and their faith is evident in many ways.
Would love to see more of Pearl and her friends and siblings.

I was raised over the top Catholic, 🙄 we all come from our brand of ideology, but will admit that this faith does walk the walk and their ideology does create peace and a lack of hatred that I wish the world could help spread. I'm wondering if you will address the issues of inbreeding, child abuse, and other effects of unimaginable trauma. I'm not trying to be disrespectful to this beautiful culture rather I am trying to honor those affected by these devastating consequences. Please do not ignore them in your attempt to honor these communities
All communities have abuse and trauma, nothing interesting in that. Secular communities wreak of abuse.
I could listen to Pearl and you for hours - the history, traditions, etc. well worth spending time listening.

Modern society is so messed up especially with roles and I appreciate Pearl and her perspectives. This is what’s wrong with modern society.
Pearl's videos introduced me to your channel, and i think I am now binge watching :). She is such an engaging presence, and while I know I will likely never agree with some of her views on things, she reminds me so much of my maternal grandmother, a devout muslim (of all things) woman who looked a bit like Pearl too and had strong faith and convictions just like her (with whom I also didn't agree on everything and who would also tell me 'No' or give a contrary answer with the same definite tone Pearl does to your 'curious' or 'doubtful' questions, it is both endearing and reassuring). I can watch her interviews on repeat. I was also so touched by her approach towards people who leave (in another of her interviews) and how instead of flipping out, her main concerns were of how they'd survive in the world they know nothing of.
Oh my gosh what a beautiful lady!! The way she explained traditions and why women do there jobs. My God continue to hold Pearl in His mighty hands, all the days of her wonderful life.🥰
Listen to Pearl’s wisdom! Children are the foundation for families! While I am not Jewish….I respect this women’s view of family. Too bad this world does not listen to her.
Frieda, Mahalo for the wonderful interviews with Pearl. I’ve learned so much from both of you. I was going to marry a wonderful Jewish doctor while we were students at NYU. I was willing to convert. Our parents all said NO. We tried many ways to get them to accept us. NO. We both highly respected our parents. We stayed close friends for 45 years. Both married to other people.
Would have loved to have Pearl as a mother-in-law. Fine lady, teacher, mentor.
I love Pearl, if governments followed her thoughts towards others we would not have so many problems in the world !
If I could ask her one question I would ask her to explain why Jewish streets / areas have wires handing from street lamps ? We have this here in London UK.
