I think of them as a tool to increase performance with a small added safety benefit. Definitely useful for competitions, PR attempts, and heavy sets towards the end of a lifting block. If you need a belt to protect your back from injury, you should probably focus on your hip and back mobility, breathing technique, and core strength first.
