- I was wondering if spring was ever going to get here, but it is now, and it brought some of the best catfishing of the entire year! Seriously, ice out catfish can be bonkers, especially if you get an unseasonably nice day. Those rising water temperatures get the cats all ramped up!

Having my hands covered in fish and residue from the bait we were using is the only way that I thought people did eat when fishing with rod and reel or trot lines. I was brought up doing it so just thought that it was the norm

Awesome man! Definitely buying my 2020 license tomorrow! That big Channel cat put an equally big smile on my face. I'm in Ohio and in a lifetime of fishing @55 years of age Channels cats over 8lbs. are probably fewer than my fingers and toes. Over 10lbs I can only claim four and of those four the two that came from running water fought like Flatheads. It's a toss-up until landed. Dandy trophy catch for sure, cheers and thanks for sharing!

Try cutting that red nerve vein out of the middle of the fillet and then cut it up and batter and fry. Makes it taste a lot better. Just an opinion. Great videos, dude. We’re just getting started with our spring crappie and blue cat run here in Oklahoma. Been going almost everyday after work and catching 15-20 ~ 10”-14” crappie and one or two 5lb-10lb blues. We use the crappie ribs off the fillets with eggs stuck on them for bait and they work great. We also use chunks of the blues belly meat (skin off) in 1” cubes and they work really good.

Hard boiled eggs???!!! I thought I was so alone in the world. Everyone makes the barf face when I tell them what I have in my yak hatch for lunch. HBE's and string cheese...a nice sandwich if I get up when my alarm goes off.
Nice channies! The bigger ones are becoming more rare, I think. We didn't get a full ice-over here at Milford like we did last year. Everything is happening a bit sooner. Lots of rain forecasted over the next week or so. We shall see how things shape up. 40 mph gusts last weekend kept the yak parked but still got on a really good fish from shore. Cool story, eh?

I think the blues out compete channels when they're introduced and the channel cat population suffers. I don't mind it, because I find big fish fascinating personally. I'll be down there shortly, and I can't wait! Especially the kayak tournament!

Have you ever lost a rod? I've lost one, to a carp. I often throw a worm out for carp in the river when the bite is slow for flatties to beat the boredom. I was reeling in a worm when one of my cat poles bent down so I lay down my pole with the worm in the water maybe 2 or 3 feet from the bank, and while I was reeling in the catfish the pole I laid down took off never to be seen again. Luckily it was just a throwaway carp pole though, amiright heheh.
Yeah back when I was younger had a fish rip mu favorite pole in. Real bummer.

So yes I was wondering and now I see the sleeping Spenser has come out of his cave for good after a not quite so bad winter. Yes was great and with the promise of a earlier thaw and the fact we're not under 6ft of snow makes this a more promising season. The RV has already began calling our names and the way RV'ers are crazy in this state I've been on the sites snatch weekends and more for late Spring, Summer and Fall. I love buy now camp later. You gotta move to or not have a place besides the Driveway for that nice big Trailer. Anyway, I've been looking at your online links for Gear and you're just a little serious about the stuff you use. It's the same for me with my Drones. They cost 4 figures(above the decimal point) and they work. They are the best they don't usually have issues unless a Eagle has a nest near by and feels threatened by them. Happens just not to me, I use the half brain that I have. Great job with the fishes, A big ole Flat like that already. You're setting the bar early on quality catches. With most schools in the County already closing shop until at least March 30 you're have time, so I guess you'll just have to fish..........

@@vincentjamesngubane4922 lot more small ones than big ones. Most small ones never survive to reach trophy size. So I let the trophies go that have the best chance to get even bigger and eat the small, more plentiful ones.

Do you ever leave slack in the line when you catfish so you can see the belly of the line start to straighten out? Kinda like a strike indicator, especially in the wind.
Not intentionally. Pressure doesn't seem to bother cats unless its inconsistent pressure. Hope you enjoyed the video!
I have never ate channel cat or flathead. so what size would you say is good to keep 6 to 8 pounds
The best tasting channels are 1-4 lbs. All flatheads taste good, but I don't keep any over 10 lbs cuz it takes so long for them to grow big. Most small ones never make it bigger than 10 because of disease, predation, and weather shifts, so if they are over 10, they have a better shot of becoming a real giant.

I gotta say i love the vids and i love me some kitties and carps. I often (95%) am found sitting on the river bank staring at my tip waiting for the wiggle O_o. But i fish my local (lockport m.b.) spillway alot for the biggens.
