Hi! A Korean passing by :)
They used the word "느끼하다" to describe the pancakes and that specific Korean word doesn't exist in English! The closest word in English is "greasy" so the subtitles had no other choice.
It doesn't mean it has too much oil and it's oily (or cooked the wrong way). Koreans usually eat spicy, salty side dishes with rice and soup. So when we eat stuff like cheese, cream, bread and all the 'buttery' flavored things, some can feel queasy in the mouth or stomach (maybe somehow nauseating), and that kind of feeling/taste is called "느끼하다". So I guess this adjective is made based on the spicy and salty Korean diet!
I do agree they were a bit too criticizing and careful, but I wanted to tell everybody that the word "greasy" isn't the same here in Korea! We just don't have the right English word for "느끼하다". :)

with al the corn syrup used in many amarican recipes even my german stomach would feel queasy
Im used to a slize of rye bread with cheese, a bole of cereals or yogurt
even germans that eat tost with nutella/jam/marmalade or a bread roll with slized meat would feel queasy
because englisch and amarican breakfast is way to full to eat in the morning
britisch stuff is to havy as a whole and amarican stuff is to havy or to sugary

    • @AnnaH4R

Yes! And our breads- toast, biscuits, english muffins, bagels, croissants, etc. I will even make grilled cheese, or a cheese quesadilla, for breakfast.
Maybe I'm the only one who also has rice, with salt, pepper & butter sometimes, in place of grits...
And before anyone says this isn't American & that isn't American- who cares, it is still what plenty of Americans eat for breakfast.

just an fyi when Koreans refer to a food being “greasy” they don’t literally mean that is has grease on it. the word they said in korean means that it feels heavy. Have yall ever had an experience where you’re eating alfredo or something thick that makes u feel heavy and nauseous and makes you not want to eat it anymore? yeah thats what they mean when they say that term.

Americans don't typically eat pancakes for breakfast as a routine. It's something that a would be reserved perhaps for the weekends and even then only on occasion. Most Americans rush out of the house relatively quickly in the morning so typically it would be something with extremely small prep time and preferably even portable such as: cereal, toast, bagels, muffins, pastry or perhaps just skipping breakfast altogether and having coffee or tea.

I wash it down with strong, black coffee. An hour later, I take Psillium fiber to get more energy from my meal, and better digestion. That's my biggest meal, usually. Lunch might be fairly big, or not, but dinner is always on the small side. I'm not educated on digestion or

Guys, as a Korean, the translation of the word "느끼해" (romanization: neukki-hae) has many different meanings. It can mean oily, greasy, cheesy (personality/literal), and nauseating, depending on the circumstances. I'm surprised not many KOREAN people pointed that out.
I think they meant nauseating because if you think about it, Koreans eat less sweet meals regularly. Pancakes+syrup+butter are very heavy and sweet, which they would not be used to. In this context, 느끼해 means it feels unhealthy or nauseating. Even as Americans, we've all been there after our 7th donut or 5th pancake where we feel nauseous. I hope this explanation clears things up a bit.

EpicGamingLogic I do love breakfast, but I don't have the time or money to make it all that often. So I do the same before work in the morning, I drink a protein shake, but I also take a vitamin. Though if I had the time in the mornings, I still wouldn't because I can't eat a heavy meal and be active right away. So for me, breakfast is a rare thing that is only eaten on my day off, or if I go to a restaurant, at dinner time, that sells breakfast 24hrs. Nothing beats brinner. Though I'm not a hardy breakfast eater, I don't like eggs by themselves, and I only like bacon. For me, breakfast isn't breakfast if it isn't like eating dessert for a meal with a salty and super crispy bacon compliment. So pancakes, french toast, or waffles with lots of syrup. Chocolate chip or pecan pancakes are both my favorites. Basically, it isn't breakfast for me if it doesn't feel like my foot might fall off after eating it.

Eggs are a bit more subjective, but I think I would argue that a fried egg, or scrambled, is more American. That plate with a little bacon and a sunny side up egg looked wrong. I would prefer to see: bacon (or sausage), toast, scrambled eggs, hash browns, and ketchup.

    • @MGmirkin
      @MGmirkin 5 лет назад +8

I'm pretty sure I have literally never had a pancake, or waffle, that was properly made, that was "greasy" (IE, oozing grease out of every pore). If it's "greasy," you've **made it wrong** and should send it back to the kitchen to be made **correctly**.
Hash browns (not shown in this video), yeah, okay, some of those I've had have definitely been "greasy."
But pancakes / waffles? Nah, don't think so. Unless someone like slathered the entire thing in butter **after** otherwise correctly preparing it. Honestly, I kind of hate butter, and if I see that someone has shoved an ice cream scooper's worth of butter in a dollop on top of the warm pancakes, I almost immediately scrape it off, before it can melt and soak into my otherwise perfectly good pancakes. IMO, pancakes do not need a scoop of butter on them. Just a light drizzle of syrup (again, not enough to thoroughly soak it; it ain't soup!)...

In Korean, there isn’t a direct translation for the expression. American food is generally more filling, or “heavy” to eat. That’s what they are trying to say instead of the traditional American term and definition of greasy. Us Koreans are usually used to lighter or easier to eat food that isn’t as fatty, sugary, etc.

    Where is the sugary cereal?

I kind of expected this kind of reaction, since I am aware from various media that eastern Asian countries don't think of breakfast the same way we do in the west, and especially not as we do in America. They basically eat similar foods to what they eat the rest of the day and there aren't as into sweet things as we are. It's no surprise they thought of these more like snack foods and desserts. We do tend to eat some pretty heavy and sweet foods for breakfast.

To answer the cute girls question about whether or not we gain energy from pancakes the answer is no. The majority of American breakfast food has so many carbs it will put you to sleep so we also drink really strong coffee with it. American breakfast food isn't supposed to wake you up, it's designed to keep you full for 6-8 hours. Coffee is what we use to wake up.

I'm not the Korean guy in glasses obviously lol but there're some stuff I can explain. Traditional Korean meals are mostly vege-based. So for some Koreans don't used to eat western food, they may think it's greasy. It's just about what they used to eat and I'm pretty sure the Korean guy in glasses meant no offence.
However, I was also surprised by his reaction cause thought many young Koreans like to eat western food.

kat I really want to eat bacon in a bun now
Also those pancakes look good, maybe I should come to America and try out the fashion and foods, my English speaking is no good but there will be no need to speak if I am shoving my face with tacos and bacon buns😂

As an American, the pancakes and waffles seemed a bit - I don't know - strange. Maybe it was because of the camera and the presentation, but they looked odd, somehow. Also, it felt weird watching them eat crispy bacon strips with a knife and fork. I would say most of us would just pick bacon up with our fingers, unless it was cooked soft. LOL

In Canada some of us eat bacon (and peameal bacon aka Canadian bacon) with a knife and fork, because it's best dripping with maple syrup 😛

      A. Neufeld I legit ate maple bacon today with my fingers and it was drenched in maple syrup. Gotta love you Canadians for putting maple syrup on everything! ;)
