- Back to the 2024 Union Pacific Big Boy schedule for 2024. This week a detailed look at the first leg, Cheyenne Wyoming to Salt Lake City Utah.
We already had a quick overview, this week let's clean up the schedule and look at specific times and places. (Be specific, go Union Pacific). The final schedule was released on May 9 2024 by the Union Pacific Railroad.
SO.. new updates, new rumors, and new thoughts on what will and what MIGHT happen and when.

UPDATE ALREADY!! The train will be mixed freight all the way west! Not just Salt Lake City. The freight cars will be cut out in Roseville. Passenger cars only over Donner heading back east. 🚀🚀🚀😁🚂🚂🚂
Passenger cars all the way back to Cheyenne or will they be cut out at Sparks NV or Ogden UT? My guess would be Ogden, and pick up freight cars to go from Ogden to Cheyenne, but they could leave the "experience the Union Pacific" rail car on and set off the passenger cars at Sparks.
@@jonathanp935cars all the way back. But freight cards added back in at Ogden on the return. I think the passenger cars will be on the train at all times. But a limited train.
Oh, I wish I could do this! I'm putting all my spare money into my own Railroad on my land here in Arizona for a 3 year project! I just yesterday bought my 1st section of pier footings for the raised track!! Wow, this ride would be the greatest adventure I'm going to have to miss, RATS (fink)!!!

Dale: Would be interested hearing about the Texas trip. However probably going through the panhandle since the trip also includes Arkansas. That is quite some distance away. Sometime to think about.

Great update. Keep them coming! Do you know why they have a newer diesel locomotive directly behind the Tinder? Is it to provide back up in case of breakdown or failure? Is it to provide air pressure for the brakes? Very curious!
Hi. Yes. All of that. Mostly braking! They need head end brakes. And the brakes on the Big Boy cost tens of thousands of dollars to replace. So they use the dynamic brakes on the diesel when needed. Also traction. Hard to load sand into the steam locomotives. By hand from bags. Thousands of pounds of sand! So when they need traction add diesel power. They have diesel controls mounted in both steam engines. So Ed can add power or brakes anytime 😊😊
They added the 6388 diesel engine somewhere around Morgan yesterday (07/04/2024).
Will we ever see the BigBoy on the East coast?
Nope. Only on UP tracks. Not east of Chicago.
When UP buys NS or CSX.... :)
