I had to make a small cut at 18:20, the missing words are (spoiler) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . "It seemed the Hyundai Accident had improved, but as 2001 rolled around."
@SixfiveBowman Yeah the top gear hosts kept calling it the Accident. He definitely wore out the joke. It was funny after like twice but he wasn't mispronouncing it unintentionally though.
I think the Accent WRC's lack of love compared to the Octavia WRC is partly because Hyundai never gave us a performance version for the road, whereas the Octavia had both the VRS and the 1.8t 4x4. The Hyundai was JUST a rally car, with no road version worth lusting after.
I think part of the problem is that unlike Skoda, Hyundai has never had a serious battle for top positions against stronger brands. Add to that, Octavia was a bit too big, too long and it required very very agressive and spectacular driving style to make it change direction, where's Hyundai was more compact, and theoretically should have been a better platform. Performance wise, Accent's trouble not related to body stiffness at all, as this was easily handled with extensive rollcage and additional weldings. The real problem was that Hyundai's team simply did not have budget to develop active differentials, which were a big game changer at the time, and it may have also lacked power. Theoretically all cars were limited to 300 BHP, but this was done solely with fixed size turbo restrictor, and unofficially there were strong rumors that even with this restrictors top cars reached 450 horsepower.
Ironically in my country Venezuela first gen accent is synonymous of reliability, it is a workhorse for many taxi drivers for that reason. That gen was sold until 2007 I think.
It's kind of crazy that Hyundai and Škoda have similar fate in wrc. Both started as a competent f2 kit car teams in mid to late 90's, then were bad in main wrc in early 2000's, let and years later return to be really good in rally1/rally 2 respectively
I think you’re totally wrong. The 90s and early 2000’s Hyundai’s were dead reliable. I have owned an Excel (Accent of the 90s) and an Accent from 2001 myself when they where 4 years old back then and they where the most reliable cars I have ever owned. The same experience in my family. They where ugly and drove like sh*t though but reliable they were for sure.
Lol! 8:10 In west Europe there were many Hyundai's sold. The Accent was very reliable and great value. You are being a bit harsh here mate! Still a great video.
Plenty of people did buy them, but I did say nobody, *in their right mind*. There were plenty of Hyundai buyers who were not of sound mind though during the 2000s
I remember 2002 Swedish Rally. Freddy Loix was driving with a broken leg, and had dragged his Hyundai into points. I was really rooting for him. Then the Hyundai failed. I was heartbroken.
Accident is also what I used to call it as a kid. I never forgot the Accent. I think it looked cool. There were some stuff missing, 1st stage win in New Zealand, leading a rally New Zealand in 2001, rally GB 2001, Loix broken foot and more. The design was muscular like Tiff Nidell said.
The Hyundai Accent WRC in my opinion actually looks really good. Kenneth Eriksson did a good job driving the accent, but I see him with Mitsubishi forever, 90-95. Kenneth is my favorite driver with Andrea Aghini and Makinen. But it was good to see Kenneth driving at that time after leaving the WRCar’s for a while, I still think Group A is the best though. Great video!
Eriksson won a few rallies with Mitsubishi winning the Australian and Swedish rounds in 1995 with Mitsubishi achieving a 1-2 with Makinen finishing runner up in Sweden.
@@mm91ie He won the 91 Swedish rally in the VR4 as well, a true champion! He won the Asia Pacific Rally Championship in 1995 with Mitsu as well as being third in the drivers championship for 1995 with Mitsu. Kenneth+Staffan and Mitsubishi were a match made in heaven!
You have to take a look at this car's predecessor: the Hyundai Coupe F2 Kit Car. It was the sole entrant at the 1998 F2 WRC category and somehow managed to finish 2nd at the championship... Surely a harbinger of things to come. Also, a funny anecdote: during their last year, the Korean management wanted to save money by a) having the team camp outdoors during the race, instead of booking hotel rooms and b) not having a co-driver, as only one person actually drove the car! Alas, they went the sensible way and saved money by not paying MSD.

If I remember correctly the Hyundai team led the 2001 WRC Rally New Zealand after the first day. Much helped by running late on the gravel roads on the friday, but none the less they were leading.
Hi. Why do you keep referring to it as Accident? When it is Hyundai Accent. Also good point to note is that David Higgins won the 2004 British Rally Championship in this car. I followed the championship that year and was quite pleased to see that.
Both Hyundai and KIA in the beginning purchased whatever parts they could find, they only manufactured chassis and body. It meant that you might have Citroens powersteering and Renoults altenator .
The Accent was never forgotten in some countries. In fact, they were and still is huge. Just not in North America as far as I know. I remember seeing these cars in Korea back in the day pushing over 400whp out of those 1.6L Alpha engines as well as in other countries. Engine swaps were also popular on these using Beta engines as well. Pumping out such power on boost using ONLY factory components believe it or not.
For me who allready had well over 30 cars by now most german or asian i actually think you've got your research not quiet right.. i have owned every gen of the hyundai coupe currently the scoupe slc gt turbo with standalone ecu etc pushing nearly 3 times the original hp on stock block without problems.. it was one of the first cars to use a bosch motronic ecu from the factory, the suspension was tuned by lotus etc and the only issue in terms of reliablity is/was/allways will be the rost other than that if you can ignore the hard plastics in the interieur these are great fun cars and that from a person who currently drives an audi a4 3.0tdi sline as daily driver
Personally I'd call the coupe the exception when it comes to early 2000s Hyundais, they were actually alright, but the Hyundai Accent, Sonata etc, not so good.
I can confirm, the Coupe is a gem of a car, I actually own one (first gen made in 98) with the 1.6 114hp engine. Maybe it isn't that powerful, but surely is fun to drive and you can really enjoy the car while cruising through the countryside, on mountain passes or on the highway. I also love it's reliability, almost like a Fiat 1.2 FIRE but with a decent kick!
That wasn't the only point tbh. Skoda has always been involved in rallying since their inception of making cars in the 1930s and even during the Commie Bloc era. Once the Berlin Wall fell, Skoda was acquired by VW but that didn't stop them at all. Instead, they went with the puny Felicia and slot it into the F2 class of the WRC and surprisingly won quite alot of rounds when they entered it in 1995 and was only consistently beaten overall by Seat and their kit cars. Thus, from that development cycle, they slotted the Octavia into the big game and tested it out thus by then, everyone knew who Skoda was thus the Octavia was just a "big" star for rally fans. Hyundai on the other hand, was different. It was a relatively unknown brand to motorsport thus no one blip an eye to remember what it was. It wasn't until the domination of the i20N that everyone suddenly remembered about the Accent WRC. Consequently, Skoda didn't quit rally at all unlike Hyundai after their failed attempt. Instead, Skoda went down with the Fabia and even when that failed, they quit WRC top flight altogether BUT AGAIN... Not for long as with the introduction of WRC2, Skoda knew that if they can't fight with the top dogs, they'll go for lower championship still aligned to the big WRC and with that, they entered their Fabia S2000 which, showed Skoda still had it and it wasn't until the R5 came along then did it show that Skoda actually knows a thing or two about rallying and in fact won the whole championship in 2016. Hyundai, meanwhile, did not compete in anything until their N-division was set up and back to rallying they went with the introduction of the i20N WRC. Thus, that window of emptiness from 2004-2014, no one remembered about the Hyundai Accent WRC whereas with the active participation of Skoda, everyone remembered the "Czech Tank".
Surprisingly Octavia is loved by fans but rarely seen on non-rally themed racing games while Accent/Verna WRC got a spot on Auto Modellista and others. Which reminds me of the question did the sketch-only Hyundai Project RS changed to something or just vanished?
Accent owner here. Hatchback, though. even if i am a rally fan, it's too bad turbodiesels are not a thing in rally racing. it is however a capable car on the streets, punches well above it's price range.
0:30: When Rodney King was viciously beaten by the cops in 1992 the Police claimed that his car - a Hyundai Excel - was driving at 110 mph. When a Time Magazine journalist called Hyundai's American distributor to verify the claim, the person who took the call said '110 mph in an Excel? You've got to be shitting me.' Now we see Chinese car companies being subjected to vitriol and claims of poor quality, a car industry from a country that like South Korea is associated with political oppression and dirty politics. The song is still the same. I wonder what happens when the Vietnamese decide to build cars?
There was a dealership in Seattle that was offering the elantra buy one get one free. 2002 or so. Did you know Hyundai doesn't make the majority of their money from cars? It's their industrial sector.
The Accent walked so the i20 could run. Also, what's the song you use in the start of the video? We also hear it a lot during the WRC broadcasts of the early 2000s.

Accents were the cars of the people here in Greece. You will be surprised how reliable they are. A lot of lower middle class people or gypsies still use them.
When I saw the thumbnail of this video, I was given the vague thumbnail with just the brand logo and I was thinking that it must be Hyundai Coupe Kit Car. Turns out, I was wrong, and the car wasn't much of a failure. In fact, I would prefer Coupe Kit Car over Accent. Also, by the time Hyundai Accent doing things, the K-Pop you'd hear would be either JTL's "My Lecon" or anything from BoA, probably there's others I missed.
I got a feeling you have a Czech background? Hyundais, regardless of how poor build quality and unsafe they were, they have always been reliable from day one. mechanically, they will never breakdown. and they never had a problem selling in numbers again since the Pony. even From the 1st Accent Excell they sold like hotcakes around the world. in all sorts of markets 3rd world countries or Australia etc. ive traded in so many Excels and Getz that simply never been serviced and still running smooth. coz they were so cheap, people treatem like throw away, and simply dont service them. When I say never serviced, When I asked the lady who serviced this car, She said "Service? no one told me They gotta be serviced" 68,000km the only thing I can see was Sludge for oil, but running fine.
No Czech background, just a huge portion off my audience is Czech, which is why I pronounce Škoda like that in my videos, but honestly it's more just the horror stories I've heard about early Hyundais. But tbf parts were really cheap so when they went wrong they weren't hard to fix.
Can someone please tell me the name of the song used in the beginning. That song was played in the WRC coverage back in the day. Brought back so many memories.
I know TyeDye made a video on this car that I've intentionally avoided watching so I don't accidentally get any ideas from that video, so maybe that's a similarity, but I doubt there's many videos out there that mention Hyundai in WRC and also the history of Chaebols in the same video.
@FailedRacers after watching both, almost completely different, If I had a copper for every small obscure Motorsport channel that I've been subbed to covering the Hyundai Accent WRC, I'd have 2 which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice.
20:23 that's it!!!!!!!! Everything comes on how looks, and Octavia was a Beauty, ugly, oversized thing rolling 120km/h on narrow roads... ❤❤❤❤ How not to love it????.... You saw an Octavia on the street and You imaginé how to make it an WRC to You. But the accent, just was a road car rolling out on a WRC stage... Personality, You Say it, and I share it❤ PD: I'm from Chile so I don't give a f$ck where a car is, korean or europe.... Same to me😂
In college, I struck up a conversation with a girl who drove an Accident that was just beat to hell. Every time I saw it it had a new dent or body panel missing. Couldn't drive at night because every light was busted or inoperable. She even confessed to striking a cyclist on campus. I asked her what her major was: gender studies 😂 -The Hyundai demographic in a nutshell.
1995 standings are more or less to be ignored, Toyota got removed from the standings and the only other two teams were Subaru Prodrive and Ralliart Mitsubishi with a semi-factory Ford team. Nottaking anything away from Kenneth, hd kept up with 4wd cars in a golf gti. Its just that the 1995 season was garbage.
I had the OG Hyundai accident I mean I was a kid and my dad got it as a company car. Brand new the classic ugly green color in the crush test. I remember it was modern car but ugly 😂😢
I cant continue listening to you if you cant even get the name of the car right. The car was called Accent, its clearly stated that in several of the purloined clips. Get This Suff Right and you might survive.
Hyundai what ?? Accident ?? 😂😂😂 You made a video about Hyundai story of a forgoten car, and you dont even search how to spell the model name correctly ?? 😂
Hyundai's are still terrible car l don't like them after all are they as good as Toyota and actually before l found our how bad Hyundai and Kia are we owned a Hyundai accident woops accent and we didn't own it long a forgettable car then we made the stupid mistake of trading it in on a 2007 Ford Fiesta what an absolutely awful car that was owned ten years worst car we owned infact my 1997 Toyota Hilux is so much better that Ford Fiesta it was my wife's car and it was that bad my wife actually lost confidence in her driving it was awful pile of junk and l was so happy to see it leave on the back of a tow truck we drive a Suzuki Baleno a much much better car as for British cars they are all junk and there hasn't been any decent British car ever made and that goes for South Korea also the best cars obviously are Japanese head and shoulders above any other country except for India were our Baleno was made and Mahindra an Indian make of vehicle

No Czech background, just a huge portion off my audience is Czech, which is why I pronounce Škoda like that in my videos, but honestly it's more just the horror stories I've heard about early Hyundais. But tbf parts were really cheap so when they went wrong they weren't hard to fix.
You forget thet the Skoda Estelle was a rally legend
"Hyundai Accident"
My God 🤦♂️😆
Can someone please tell me the name of the song used in the beginning. That song was played in the WRC coverage back in the day. Brought back so many memories.

@@FailedRacers Thank you so much!!
What's the song in the start?
playing wrc3 as a kid, the accent is my least favorite car, I don't like how the car looks somehow
Yea it was slow, and crap. But god damn, that Castrol livery from 2001 was amazing!
F1 2012 main theme .mp3
Accent was designed by italdesign also.
No reliability? Are you out of your mind ?
Song list for this video?
In America in the mid 90s, John Buffum and Paul Choiniere were cleaning up in SCCA Rally with (turbo AWD) Hyundai Elantras & Tiburons (Open Class).
I swear I've seen this before
I know TyeDye made a video on this car that I've intentionally avoided watching so I don't accidentally get any ideas from that video, so maybe that's a similarity, but I doubt there's many videos out there that mention Hyundai in WRC and also the history of Chaebols in the same video.
Personality, You Say it, and I share it❤
PD: I'm from Chile so I don't give a f$ck where a car is, korean or europe.... Same to me😂
In college, I struck up a conversation with a girl who drove an Accident that was just beat to hell. Every time I saw it it had a new dent or body panel missing. Couldn't drive at night because every light was busted or inoperable. She even confessed to striking a cyclist on campus. I asked her what her major was: gender studies 😂
-The Hyundai demographic in a nutshell.
22:13 "worst cars in the world" is too harsh and likely not true.
Sensationalism .
If you think that the 2000s Hyundai accent isn't a good car then you never owned one and think too highly of other rust buckets
Hiu nn dai not hi you n dai 😊
1995 standings are more or less to be ignored, Toyota got removed from the standings and the only other two teams were Subaru Prodrive and Ralliart Mitsubishi with a semi-factory Ford team. Nottaking anything away from Kenneth, hd kept up with 4wd cars in a golf gti. Its just that the 1995 season was garbage.
I'm assuming the 'Hyundai Accident' thing was a joke reference to Top Gear. Funny once or twice, but for a whole video?
I had the OG Hyundai accident I mean I was a kid and my dad got it as a company car. Brand new the classic ugly green color in the crush test. I remember it was modern car but ugly 😂😢
Korea? Hyosung!
Poor speaker performance. 😢
I cant continue listening to you if you cant even get the name of the car right. The car was called Accent, its clearly stated that in several of the purloined clips. Get This Suff Right and you might survive.
Would you pretty please stop subliminar messaging us to subscribe? It got really annoying.

I'm sure it was a lovely vid. I will not finish it.
Accident, really? No wonder that I'm not subscribed. Talking about accident, the whole anglo car industry!

Horrible techno music at the start. Such a Horrible little car. Horrible POS
Hyundai what ?? Accident ?? 😂😂😂 You made a video about Hyundai story of a forgoten car, and you dont even search how to spell the model name correctly ?? 😂
I'm fully aware of how to pronounce it correctly but it's more fun if I don't.
Have you heard about jokes?
They are the same shity company that still makes shity cars....dont be fooled
there is no good korea
Full of shit
