Hi, your review of Opium is spot on! I know this perfume very well in it's original formulation , as it used to be my mother's signature scent.
She had the 60ml splash edt bottle, and even when she dubbed it only 2-3 times on her skin, you could smell it from the other side of the house. and the scent was unfolding from top to base for hours, very 3d as you said.
I still have it and other spray bottles, 30+ years later, and unfortunately (as you also mention) it goes now straight to the base due to age. So the experience of how it used to smell and project in it's original form is forever lost i'm afraid...
If you like opium I recommend you to try 3 other perfumes related:
First is Ho Hang by Balenciaga from 1971, one of the first marketed unisex perfumes (later marketed as a male fragrance), and done by the same nose as Opium. Experts consider it as the inspiration to Opium, for me the connection is very evident, mainly the top notes of how Opium used to smell. (although the overall experience is more fresh berbershop masculine fougere)
Second perfume is Cinnabar by Estee Lauder, (only in it's original form)- I think launched the same year as Opium- it's the closest thing to Opium one can find but more dense and sweet. It also somehow seems to survive time better than Opium.
Third one is an unknown gem- Zibeline secret de venus (huil pour le bain version) by the house of Weil. - this house had an interesting history of making perfumes for scenting fur coats, and it's very animalic and have that cola effect.
Launched in 1928, and a must try if you like this category of deep oriental perfumes.

@@RamseytheRam glad to discover your channel! Btw ho hang club is from 1987 and is not a flanker of ho hang, they are different and not done by the same nose.
There are 2 main versions of ho hang, one in the original bee pattern box, which is the original formulation which is closer to opium.
The more recent one is in the red box, now also discontinued- slightly different, maybe more masculine.
It is hard for me to decide which one is better, i like both.

@@RamseytheRam The original version I have has a transparent brown top written on it Balenciaga paris, the label is brown, and it's an atomiseur spray.
The reformulated version has red top with the bb logo on it, the label is red and the sprayer is vaporisateur natural spray.
As for Ho hang club- it was launched as the first masculine balenciaga perfume in 1987 after Bogart bought the rights for the perfumes of house balenciaga. originally it was named "club de balenciaga", then changed to ho hang club.
bottle and label is black, and all 3 versions I mentioned have the cylinder shape.

Opium is a rabbit hole due to the amount of times YSL perfumes changed hands, my favorite in the women's line is the original, I have the same 36ml spray, mine's from 1985 at it is ludicrously beastly, agree that the top notes have faded a bit due to age but to me it's art

Love the original. I know exactly what you are talking about. My mother started wearing that in 77 and her room and clothes would smell like that forever. The old bottles were so beautiful and they even had a long necklace with a mini bottle on it, which she had it.
Her dogs would smell like that just because they were in her lap or she picked them up
It is a scent that was addictive. And you wanted to be around it. Please, rich and it would inspire luxury. Pure elegance ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I have the original Opium with the built in atomizer and ATM it is the only version I have ever smelled, let alone worn. I agree with you that a lot of the base is there right from the get go. I do sense a shadow of clovey orange not unlike a mulled beverage but it is just a shadow and time has practically erased it. Resins are there in abundance and that exotic, smokey incense does a fantastic job of enhancing the resins and woods without stealing the show. Speaking of woods I mainly detect the creamiest rich, lux sandalwood but no other woods even though they are listed. The resins in this first formula Opium are sweet and dense. I'm sure, on me anyway, the opoppanax is coming through the most and it gives me that resinous "sweet" that can also be found in my beloved vintage Poison (not saying they smell anything alike because they don't). It seems the florals are genuflecting to the spices which boils down to mostly cinnamon on me, at least it's the spice I get for the entire duration of the fragrance. I do get a definite hint of rose and it is a natural matured rose at the height of its scent just before it starts to deteriorate into something else, something unpleasant. This rose is done to perfection. I think I can even smell peach but let's face it EVERYTHING about this fragrance is expertly blended, balanced, and perfectly rounded. Oakmoss as you pointed out is of the natural kind and giving a very slight earthy cast to the fragrance and I'm sure is a big reason all things in Opium are anchored and joined together seamlessly. Plus, oakmoss has got to be a major reason longevity is off the charts. I see castoreum is listed but I swear that sublime "funk" I detect is of a civet nature but civet isn't listed. It isn't nasty or anything like that, it just provides this erotic haze that might raise an eyebrow lol! I really enjoyed your review/comparison and knowledge of this timeless classic and appreciate everything you put out there for all things vintage fragrance! Today I purchased a "newer" bottle from '04 and can't wait to do my own comparing! Thanks again!

I picked up the original opium on ebay for dirt cheap and have been debating whether or not to get a slightly later version as I suspect the original has lost some of its top and perhaps mid due to age (Still amazing regardless). Been waiting for a comparison like this to help with the decision and its an absolutely wonderful video! In my opinion, you truly do make some of the best, most complete perfume content on youtube.
As for pricing... I believe that is still a good deal, the original is getting super hard to find and when you can find it, you have to spend a fortune from what I've seen recently. I'm so lucky to have picked up my 1.2oz nearly full for around $45 as a blind buy after reading a review from Kafkaesque's blog.

I've recently been finding original Opium on ebay lately and I'm obsessed! I found a 3.3ml bottle from 1990 and it almost brought me to my knees in my memories of wearing it in times past. The new formula is an abomination!

Opium Secret is such a perfect ride. For me, it is the refined version of all things Cinnabar, which I love and is a grandchild child of Youth Dew. Secret is also a more sophisticated version of Opium. I think the myrrh softens all of the golden edges. It also adds depth. O Secret dries close to the skin, but it will raise its luxurious head if your heart starts racing.

Hi Ramsey, I came across a local listing from a guy selling vintage Opium 60ml brand new, sealed, certainly looking like it's from the 70-80's, according to the box and the label on the bottom. Is $150 Canadian a fantastic price for it? He is also selling what is appearing to be 90's 30ml bottle sealed for $80 Canadian as well! I think I will take the 60ml for sure. And from the sound of it, he scored these bottles in an old storage locker and might have more than one so please let me know if you're interested and I can hook you up!

I know you got a new light - lol - but I truly feel it is not about you, or what you say. It's the accoutrements. You could use some set dressing, wardrobe, and boom! You are there. The original version I have has a transparent brown top written on it Balenciaga paris, the label is brown, and it's an atomiseur spray.
The reformulated version has red top with the bb logo on it, the label is red and the sprayer is vaporisateur natural spray.
As for Ho hang club- it was launched as the first masculine balenciaga perfume in 1987 after Bogart bought the rights for the perfumes of house balenciaga. originally it was named "club de balenciaga", then changed to ho hang club.
bottle and label is black, and all 3 versions I mentioned has the cylinder shape.

@@RamseytheRam There are 2 articles on fragantica about ho hang, and ho hang club. They are totally different perfumes, not done by the same nose.
Perhaps they tried to ride on the success of ho hang which is a classic, and that's why they changed the name from club de balenciaga using similar bottle design.

Just wore my original 1978 Estee Lauder Cinnabars and I think it's probably quite similar to this and Youth Dew. I've heard it described as such many times. I can still smell it 24hrs later. My first impression is,
    Cinnamon
    Cloves
    Black pepper
Black cumin(not the farty, BO kind)
    Caraway seeds
    Aldehydes
    Fenel bulbs
    Carnation
