One of my favorites ever. Unique, balsamic, sweet, fresh oriental. Great fragrance. The EDP is stronger and more vanillic. Love them both.
On the hunt for the EDP now.
I just bought this recently. I like the feeling the scent gives once dried right down. It's soft, inviting, warm and comforting.
I can't wait to wear it more and more to discover it!
I bought a newer batch in 2023 and this blasts off my skin with 6 sprays. The staying power is excellent for an EDT.
I haven't smelled the new batch do you think it's worth a blind buy?
@@V.Odin1 I bought 10/2023 batch recently and I am little dissapointed (EU here). Longevity 5-6h max, projection is average and the scent is not as good as it just to be. Still have a opium DNA but for me it's not the scent that I remember back in the day.

The Blackcurrant with Star Anise is very unique, and the barbershop touches are just marvellous. Very complex

Yes, it is a classic! Back in the day, there was something about it that I couldnt get with. But I think I need to sniff this again. My nose has changed, and I suspect the formulation has also changed. Thanks again, Marc!

Love this one. The edp in the full blue jacket is even better if you can find it. But this one projects a little more. Gotta be careful on the sprays, especially after it's been sitting for a couple of years. Great impressions Marc!!

MI fragrance journey (obsession) started from this YSL Opium back in 95 one of mi all time favorite i have the edt and vintage parfum (the "nautilus" 50 ml refil bot) and the limited edition OPIUM poesie de chine LOVE them ALL
That limited edition is a collector's dream, beautiful bottle to boot!

That anise opening with the blackcurrant in the EDT is so wearable... even in the heat you can rock the EDT ⭐️

It's that little Szechuan pepper note that keeps me sniffing at it all day. A balmy vanillic spicy classic. Love it.

I got a vintage bottle of the sanofi (96) and gucci (05) era.
also got three bottles of the EDP (L'Oréal) stashed away. 😁

I've been looking to get a bottle of of this for a few years now. Reminds me of Sushi Imperial. The fruity, anise, cinnamon, vanilla combo.

I just got a 50 ml of the EDP after owning the EDT for years (vintage 2014/15ish, so far from the treasured 90's formulations), and it's AMAZING - I imagine this is close to the experience that the original formula of the EDT used to deliver.
In fact, I need an afternoon scent, I am putting it on right now 😁

This fragrance works well today. Doesn't smell outdated at all to me. In line with Boss Bottled, In terms of the way it's aged.

i just drove to brooklyn ny from connecticut three days ago to pickup an old bottom of opium 100ml 2002 bottle sealed for my mom mother's day that a woman had from her brother's old collection who passed away, and she had a bottle of this opium pour homme as well, only 50ml with box no seal, when i looked up batch years and info from a website that gives you the history, i ended scoring a bottle of this on saturday from 1996 formula original , she sold it to me for 40 bucks, i have yet to spray or wear, trying to find more info on what type of weather to wear this, but excited to try, also scored a 50ml new of fendi uomo from her for 50 bucks, it was worth the drive. the fendi is hard for me to find batch and formula, even with extensive search, but it looks nice an ambery the juice, heard good things about it, couldn't pass it up for that price.

Give it a few more tries in cool weather. You'll come around. I find the more you know about a fragrance prior to smelling it, we create a bias about it. Like, for instance, if that same scent came out of a new Dior Prive release you may be more inclined to praise it as having a modern old vibe about it. In any event, good job 👍

Also if you want something along the same lines - try Penhaligon's Lp No. 9 (for men). It's very similar.

I'm surprised that you've never tried or had it. It was big in the 90s. I was gifted a bottle in 1998 - it was amazing. Still have that bottle (20% full or so) plus couple of back ups.
I was a teen in the late 90's so Opium was not on my radar like many mid to early 90's releases. I am surprised it took me this long tho.

This is one I still want to get my nose on as well. I was on the verge of pulling the trigger on it last year but the price had already crept up a little past my blind buy comfort zone. Just saw a comment on fragrantica saying ysl hasn’t officially discontinued it, but have had a supply chain issue. Probably meaning it will be reformulated again at this point if it ever does come back.

Is there any comparison of Opium Pour Homme EDT to Givenchy Pi? Thoughts?
None. Pi is vanilla centric
I love OPH edt, but the current formula (or at least the one I smelled a few years ago) pales in comparison with the vintage juice. After Loreal took over, the edt lost its strength and some of its amazing qualities. The vintage one is amazing, though.
Interesting to hear the journey these formulations go through.

I always thought the EDP concentration was more suited to the composition but it's just generally a great scent. The edt is discontinued over here now 🤦♂️
