That was really interesting! I was using my stiffer brushes for gouache thinking that gave me more control but I difn't realise about the lifting issue. 🤯
    Thanks for this vid ♥️

I think both types can be useful for different techniques! It's nice to have options though.

I recently purchased my first gouache paints along with the sealed palette that you use and the etchr gouache brush set.
I am enjoying my first time effort with gouache. The palette is awesome and the brushes are not fighting me as I get used to the medium.
Thanks for the comparison. I feel that I have made the right choice.

I bought these brushes about 6 months ago at my local art studio/retail store that carries a full line of Etchr products. They were a little pricey $50 US but I really wanted to try brushes designated for gouache. At first I wasn’t overly impressed but the more i used them, the more I came to love them. Glad to see your review .

If you break down the price per brush it seems more reasonable, but yea, buying a big set can be a shock to the wallet 😅

I love the comparison testing and painting you have done. I never thought of how much the difference in the brushes bristles of how much they bend would produce so much difference in the painting between watercolor and gouache. I might have to give gouache a try soon. Definitely a new medium for me.

Ultimately, if you use a brush long enough, you'll figure out how to make it do what you want to do. But I love when a brush is just perfect right out of the gate, and I can do all my favorite effects without any effort

I have recently purchased some gouache and didn’t know what brushes to use cause my only teacher is RUclips and I was seeing unclear, confusing advice.
Your advice makes sense to me😘

Thank you so much for this video! Even though this is about Etchr, that comparison about the brush stiffness was really useful. I recently got a soft round brush (Princeton Aqua Elite) for gouache but my first try of it didn't feel so great bc I was so used to the stiffer angled Velvetouch. You've just encouraged me to give my softer brushes another try :D

Haha that's great to hear, because it takes me hours to do a simple voiceover. I record / re-record about 30 minutes before I get anything usable. I tried writing a script and it felt too stiff. So I have to watch the footage and just speak in the moment to make it "work"

Over the years I keep going back to attempting a gouache painting. My very last painting I was actually happy with and guess what I had that I'm certain contributed to my success..... a long soft medium size flat brush.

First of all thank you so much for making this video! So far yours is the only video I found where the Etchr gouache brushes are actually reviewed with… gouache! I’ve been feeling frustrated painting with gouache many times as I felt hard to control the brushes and was super excited to finally see some dedicated gouache brushes, but somehow, everyone on RUclips keeps reviewing those with watercolours, which to me makes little sense since there are so many watercolour brushes out there and almost no dedicated gouache brushes. It was great seeing exactly what’s different between the two and which kind of techniques they’re more suited for. You’re a star! (And I’m definitely buying a gouache set ;))

Such an amazingly insightful look at the differences between the importance of using different brushes for each medium! Thank you so much for all this information on working with gouache, I have been having issues and I think it may now have something to do with the brushes - thank you again for all the knowledge you share 💕

Nicely done! I only have used white gouache as highlights (not very successfully) and never ever considered the brush stiffness as part of my problem of it lifting the watercolor. Thanks. Beautiful Master study, just beautiful.

I didn't expect much when I got the gouache brushes, but I absolutely fell in love with that big flat wash and used it for every painting in PleinAirpril. Unfortunately, the white paint started to crack off of it on the first or second use (and I don't even leave my brushes in water). I believe you previously showed how you fix up brushes that lost their coating - I'll need to fix mine up. It just has amazing bristles and I need it in my life. Thanks for the great comparison!

Yea, that happened to a couple of mine within two days 😂 But that happens to a LOT of my wooden-handle brushes. That's why I LOVE my Winsor and Newton Series 995's because they have plastic handles.

I only wish you'd done this sooner! I was tossing up between these two brush sets a few months ago and ended up buying just the watercolour set. I've only used them a handful of times but really enjoy them and like you say, their precision. But I do wonder if the gouache ones would have been a better option for their versatility.
    Excellent comparison, thank you! 👌👏

Thank you for a very thoughtful and well articulated discussion on this subtle and nuanced subject. However I did not see much comparison using dry brush technique. How do the water color brushes compare to the gouache brushes when using a dryer paint, opaquely applied wet over dry? For much of the demo you used gouache as a watercolor.

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  2 года назад

I was attempting to use the two types of brushes for their intended purpose, so I didn't show the watercolor brushes doing ALL my gouache techniques. However it is possible to do dry brush technique with the watercolor brushes, you just have to make sure the underlayer is totally dry, and use a VERY light touch

With Acrylics I tend to paint larger, so larger flat, slightly stiffer brushes are my preference, then a softer flat for laying on some highlights
