I have a broken shoulder and could not even possibly lift a car hood open - how can that cord be left hanging out the car with the hood shut so you just plug in somehow? Thank You
If there us enough room and not interfere with the latch, it can sometimes be ran right over the head light (at least there is enough room for it on the Mustang) but make sure its not pinching the cable to where it will cut into it and expose wire and short out or cause a fire.
No garage here in Raleigh NC, but gravel driveway and I can use an extension cord. I see on your toolbox hack that the charging wire(s) is exposed, while the outdoor extension cord (yellow) is water resistant. If the connectors are inside the toolbox, and then under the hood, will that thinner charging line be okay if it rains? This is a Volvo V70 2002, and I don't drive enough to keep the battery fully charged, hence the Battery Tender Plus idea. Thanks.
When you have to take the car out and you unplug the quick disconnect but you don't want to go thru the hassle of removing the cabling with the ring terminals attached to the battery terminal...can't the bare end of the quick disconnect short out something in the car when you tug it away?
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage Wow, thank you for the quick response. Do you know if the bare metal side is positive or negative? If the bare metal side leads to the positive battery terminal...it would be bad if it touches the chassis. 🤣 However, since it has a cap and hoping it's a tight fit I don't have to worry the cap coming off even if the bare metal side leads to the positive. Hoping they designed the bare metal to lead to the negative...if you know what I mean. Just called Costco...on sale $7 cheaper! I'm off to Costco if my battery is finished charging. 🤣 These short trips to the store makes my battery dies every 3 days. Now you know what I need a battery tender. 😂

Quick question- I have hooked the round clips of the pigtail to the battery terminals which is wrapped and hooked to the battery cover inside the bonnet. When I want to maintain, I just connect the pigtail to the tender just like in motorcycles. Question is is it safe to keep the pigtail inside the bonnet? I do have the connectors closed as well.
Can any one help me ? Do you use this even if battery is in full charge? Is it only used in winter? Or when u don't use the car for long periods? Is there a fear of car battery overheating and possibly battery exploding since it's always charging? Thank u guys
Hi after the blizzard (and a parasitic leak...that was corrected) I needed to pull the battery to make sure it didn't die. I have a smaller digital Deltran charger/maintainer and it said "You need about 2ft of 6 gauge wire to ground the battery before connecting." I don't have that and have read mixed messages about grounding for this. Is there any real danger to connecting the maintainer indoors without the ground?
First make sure it’s not frozen or it could explode. Next, I am unaware of the need for an additional ground especially with a low power trickle charger, but I do not know for sure on that.
Is it ok to use this battery tender in a frigid temp outside like -35c? Unfortunately we dont have a heated garage and temp here in winnipeg goes down really low.
It should be fine, but you might want to see if the manufacturer has any specs about that. Most important I would say is keeping it dry. I’ll give you the link to my current setup
Keep in mind these smart chargers are a few steps up from a block heater or trickle charger. Also Some of these smart chargers can get wet - look for those that mention marine use or boat use too. Here is a few that do - cardiagnosing.com/best-car-battery-charger-reviews/#10_Best_Smart_Car_Battery_Chargers_in_Review But you know you could built a frame out of metal pipe or PVC and attach tarps around it to knock the cold wind/snow off. Just have to make sure you anchor well. Or buy a kit like you get for plants- hoop house, high tunnel, etc Check out parts and kits at the link below for Greenhouse MegaStore but you can get other places I’m sure. Look here at this 12x12 animal shelter for $385 but you would need more tarps for north side especially. But for $1600-2700 you can get something bigger and better. This is company for both commercial and small home type growers. - so prices and quality are pretty good. Look for 12 gauge half metal or use pics to do your own. I would try to stay with 12 or 14 gauge for strength. And in your weather and cold, if you use PVC which they have plenty of fittings, you might ask them for a recommendation for pvc to stand up with strength and durability not to get brittle so quick. Check under tabs for structures, hardware and DIY, and coverings. Twin and triple wall polycarbonate panels are pretty efficient. They have sunglass too 10 yr warranty. Maybe something will help with your cold and wind. Gosh, I’m glad I don’t live there..too cold for me. You’ll need to charge it with an actual charger until full. After that, if the tender can’t turn it from red to green in about 20 min, the battery is likely shot. It is just a trickle charge, so it can only maintain. I had one plugged into my dead battery for over a day with no luck.
How long can you keep the hood open? Isn’t it unsafe? How about taking the extension beneath through the gaps or I guess even closing the hood so it just rests?
Is there a similar device that will keep a battery charged w/o having to plug the device into a wall outlet? I don't have a garage & don't think my landlord will allow me to keep the battery charged inside my house; she will view it as a fire hazard.
