I can see that the meter showed some readings, but I am wondering what you actually measured. This meter should not measure DC current, especially that you set it to 60A AC range...
Some vehicles disable the check engine light by disengage battery cables. Doesn't fix the problem but you can pass inspection with that trick until you can afford to fix it. I had to do that once on my Lincoln Town car.
I looked up the specs: this thing only measures AC current unless you use it as a regular multimeter, I.e. disconnect the battery. Cars use DC current. I am not sure why you had a reading, there might be some AC injected by some IC.
Service manual for my Honda says make sure you disconnect the battery before removing the urethane resin bumper cover, because if you accidentally hit one of the sensors in there that tells the computer when to deploy the air bag, the airbag might get deployed. Even more important if you are removing the actual bumper. Same thing if you are taking off any door panels. Right - the air bags can't deploy it they don't have power from the battery. If you disconnect the battery, the audio-visual unit may or may not need to be reset. Sometimes it does; sometimes it doesn't. I don't know why. If it needs to be reset it displays a message saying so tells you how. The owners manual, yes the owners manual not just the service manual, also tells you how to reset the audio-visual system. All your pre-set radio stations will be lost though, so if it is important to you to have them, it is a good idea to write them down before disconnecting the battery. Personally I never use the pre-sets. I never tune for stations manually either. I just tell the tuner to scan, and then when the scanner reaches a station I like, I tell the scanner to stop there. So the audio-visual unit seems to be the main pain in the buttocks connected with disconnecting the battery, although even this doesn't happen all the time, it only happens sometimes. The other problem is that if you are waiting for the drive cycle to be completed so you can get your car inspected, you may have to wait longer, since the cycle may start from the beginning rather than from where it was when the battery was disconnected.

How to properly protect batteries from temperatures in the paint booth during curing process when getting a new paint job? Car battery always seem to die the same day after fresh new paint job. How to prevent this?
Is this because the temperature in the paint booth drain the battery fast or because the auto body shop may routinely disconnect all customer car batteries during paint process and reconnect them when completely finished? If shops know that doing that is bad for modern cars, why do they do it? Or I guess the question is, are they supposed to do it to protect batteries from paint booth temperature?
FYI Scotty, the AstroAI Digital Clamp Meter, TRMS 6000 is advertised as an AC current meter only. Although the TRMS 6000 meter may be able to measure DC current the reason AstroAI indicates it is AC current only may be due to its inaccuracy when measuring DC current. Also the current scales on the TRMS 6000 meter are marked with a symbol indicating AC only; a letter "S" turned sideways. For it to indicate AC and DC there would be an underscore below the sideways letter "S". There are several other clamp meters advertised for under thirty dollars that do measure DC current.

Disconnected the battery on my 2016 Lexus IS 200t F Sport for three weeks to preserve the battery when was out of town. Didn’t have any problems when battery was re-connected. Works perfectly fine
I couldn't afford one of these, so I stripped the wire, licked my finger and I'm good to go. Sure I have t wait a week for the numbness to go away but it works.
Scotty! This is fantastic! I remember, in the '60's-'70's, I had a cheap, simple multimeter that let me work for years on my VW Bugs; but now, unless I can find a Bug that's intact enough to be a daily driver, I guess I'm going to change with times, and get a clamp-around probe-meter. I had no idea things had mutated to this degree of complexity. Thanks for bringing this knowledge to the unmechanicaI masses. I guess that, in order to generate really complex problems, you have to have a computer.
Hi Scotty! Love your channel!! I think you've got the wrong meter here though.. The AstroAI DT201D measures AC amps only, not the parasitic DC amps you are trying to measure. Car batteries produce Direct Current if I'm not mistaken.
Any current, AC or DC, generates electomagnetic flux waves. DC flux waves will be weaker becauce it is direct current and the meter is designed to measure this.
I have learned so much that I am looking into buying new cars to keep for decades to come or used cars to save on money. I also didn't know what kind of car to buy that is reliable enough beyond the 300,000 miles mark, and after all these videos, I've decided to stick to some kind of Corrolla. Didn't take much convincing considering I already knew of Toyota's reliability factor, but seeing how easy it is to diagnose problems and how a few things I could do myself with just a bit of effort, I like the idea of saving money on DIY repairs. It's all thanks to you Scotty!

I feel like most people here watch scotty to have some fun instead of cars.
I remember that feeling. It was immaculate and reasonably priced. Although I did love the car, it was like a high maintenance g/f that was beyond my financial means. Then one night, a large deer jumped right in front and I had no time to avoid it. It sucked but that was it for the car!
Just ordered one! Been struggling with battery discharge issues, battery test good at Autozone, completely stumped. Thank you Scotty! P.S. I am not mechanically inclined, can someone tell me what setting to use to diagnose a Ford Explorer plz? TYIA!!
There’s something not right about this… As a rule, clamp meters generally CANNOT measure DC current (although some of them with a Hall Effect sensor built into the clamp CAN). The meter in the video FOR SURE can’t measure DC current - it can only measure AC current! There are no markings on the front of the meter to select DC current measurements. Even the user manual doesn’t list it as being DC current capable in the specs. Also… unless the parking lamps are LED, they should draw a LOT more than 0.49 amps!
You are correct. I cannot explain how Scotty got a reading unless the meter is reading high frequency conducted noise generated by the car's computer(s).
Glad I didn’t ‘know’ this when my Vauxhall cars needed new batteries. Except that disconnecting the battery sets of the alarm absolutely zero issues. Did the change in about 30 seconds which helps.
Scotty correct me if I'm wrong?, Why don't you just connect a wire to the negative terminal (not the clamp that connects to it btw) then one to the meter, then remove the battery clamp, so leaving the wire connected to the meter and battery, the circuit will not be broken, you can then read the meter and do tests, when finished reconnect the terminal and remove the meter.
I disconnect the battery cable all the time on my Jeep. The thing is that it’s a 1991 so it’s not really modern😂. But I use it for the purpose of resetting the computer sometimes.
Used to have to do the same on a 91 grand cherokee I had till one day it just wouldn't start, it would spin over but for some reason the immobiliser/alarm system was locked on 😒🤷♂️
Hey hey now, I'm offend by these non-offensive remarks. Lets keep it naughty folks in a humorous way. Remember these only comments for laughs.😁 or should i say shyta an giggles
I love your videos, I am a 66 year old woman who love to know what is going on with my car ( not necessarily to work on, but to know what needs to be worked and the process). I have passed on your videos to others, they are so educational, never seen anything so informative and entertaining at the same time. Keep them coming Scotty !!!
I don't know if this is true or not Scotty, but I heard that with the clamp-style multimeter there is one big potential saftey issue. If the probes are plugged in at the bottom, but not connected to anything, their resistance is near-infinity. OK, fine, we weren't using them anyway. However, if the circuit you are testing induces a current in the clamp, you may get (on cheaper units) a current trying to flow through the probe leads. V = IR says that although the current is tiny, the resistance is infinite. The result is that it's possible to get shocked with thousands of volts, albeit with a tiny current. I have no idea if it's true - i always unplug the probes on a clamp-style multimeter. Maybe i'm just wasting my time though. Don't know.
They DO make clamp-on meters that measure DC current... Instead of an inductive coil, they use hall-effect semiconductor current sensors. Now, the way he's waving that thing around, I can't tell which one it is, but it might be one of those
This is some of the best and informative advice you’ve ever given Scotty! Electric problem’s are always a needle in a haystack... Thanks as always Scotty!!
Scotty mate, Clamp meters are either Alternating or Direct current types, so when you use them on a household circuit you need an AC clamp meter and on a car you need a DC meter, so you need to have the right type or if your meter does both and you are working on a car you need to set the meter for DC otherwise you will not get a reading. BTW you cannot use those clamp meters on High Voltage Power lines, you need a HV type meter. Also even though a car battery is 12 volts you can still get a zillion+ amps out of it if you drop a spanner across the terminals.
Years and years ago I used to use Amp meters like that in the early 80's trouble shooting simple home appliances! I wonder if they have improved or still the same? And why do people put thumbs down on your video? Be nice if you could see what accounts do that!
I've left my battery cable disconnected for a week when i go visit my family and no one is driving my truck and re connect it and it starts up and runs just fine.
Gardy Marra Yeah, a truck, but you do that to a new Mercedes or something ridiculous and you will definitely have problems. Battery tenders are the way to go with new cars that sit a long time.
I left my ford contour in neutral and with the battery disconnected for 2 weeks to replace the neutral safety switch. It has alot of miles too but it ran fine.
Thinking back to a VW that a friend owned... The car's computer communication was routed through the radio... took the car into some place to have the radio replaced.. and the car would not run any more... Got the original radio out of the track, and spliced all the cut wires to put it back in place, and wow.. the car now runs again.
Thanks Scotty, you are the best! Easy to find drains and great trick to find the circuit with the problem. I drive an older truck and I'd love to have one of those testers! Can you do a show on how to safely change the battery out without losing the programming and screwing everything up? Would it work if you hook up a battery charger to the battery cables, disconnect the battery, install the new one, then remove the charger?
Scotty I need your help. Someone in my neighborhood has my codes to open the doors of my car. Have a 08 Saturn vue xe four banger car. What can I do that is cheap to fix the problem ??? Get a disconnect switch that is toggle switch controlled from secret location ??? What do you suggest ??? Thanks a bunch too.
Scotty, great video, quick comment... if you end up pulling all the fuses, presumably one of the high amperage ones will be related to the computer, which will kill the power, and put you into the same state as if you disconnected the battery, right? Keep up the great videos!
Scotty you are just an incredible guy. Your troubleshooting guidance is invaluable to the layman such as myself. I watched your video over two or three times ( I like your presentation skills )and was incredibly amazed at how you gave great advice. Thank you and don't ever stop. Blessings to you.

Understood but it works in the video!!!
lightlyoked It’s too bad Scotty’s far to important to hardly Ever answer anyone’s questions.
Any current, AC or DC, generates electomagnetic flux waves. DC flux waves will be weaker becauce it is direct current and the meter is designed to measure this.
It's measuring amps, or in this case miliamps. Amps are amps, regardless of whether it's ac or dc.

2020: Here's why looking at your car will destroy your car
I learn something new everyday... Thanks Scotty!
The bell at the end truly makes me smile every time~
Scotty correct me if I'm wrong?, Why don't you just connect a wire to the negative terminal (not the clamp that connects to it btw) then one to the meter, then remove the battery clamp, so leaving the wire connected to the meter and battery, the circuit will not be broken, you can then read the meter and do tests, when finished reconnect the terminal and remove the meter.

Question, removing the fuses one at time is not going to have the same detrimental effect as disconnecting the battery?
I love your videos, I am a 66 year old woman who love to know what is going on with my car ( not necessarily to work on, but to know what needs to be worked and the process). I have passed on your videos to others, they are so educational, never seen anything so informative and entertaining at the same time. Keep them coming Scotty !!!
SCOTTY IVE BOUGHT EVERYTHING THAT YOU RECOMMENDED THAT WAS "CHEAP" AND NOW I'M IN DEBT BECAUSE SO FAR IVE SPENT 6,731.08
Don't know.
The clamp-on meter in the video doesn’t measure DC current.
Steve Preston When he held that up I said ,No Way!
That's what my research has turned up also.
Yes, inductive measures AC!
Thats what I thought, AC only...no fluctuating magnetic field with DC
This is my clean non-offensive comment! Thanks for the giveaway opportunity, Scotty!!!
Another great “As Seen On Scotty TV” item. Thanks for keeping us up to date!!!

I disconnect my battery when I go overseas for months at a time. Good thing I have an older car.
Thinking back to a VW that a friend owned... The car's computer communication was routed through the radio... took the car into some place to have the radio replaced.. and the car would not run any more... Got the original radio out of the track, and spliced all the cut wires to put it back in place, and wow.. the car now runs again.
I’d like one of those meters! You’re the best Scotty!
Scotty if i can't disconnect my battery how am i supposed to install my dashcam ?
Your videos are awesome love your channel
The current from the battery is DC but the clamp appears to measure only AC current. So this clamp may not be suitable for this job.

Scotty, great video, quick comment... if you end up pulling all the fuses, presumably one of the high amperage ones will be related to the computer, which will kill the power, and put you into the same state as if you disconnected the battery, right?
