    Gawd, as a 59 yr old goalie, I can't imagine learning to do this. Fascinating how goaltending has completely changed.

      I’m the same age and I would argue that I’m better now than I was in my 30’s, when I played the most. Two keys: I train now. I especially work on hip flexibility. Flexible hips save knees. As for style, I embrace all of this, except wrapping my pads. Too much surface outside the post and too many holes to snipe. Oh, and I’m 5’5”. I HAVE to play nimble. Keep at it!

    Good to know. Been doing the overlap by accident and thinking it was wrong following the play down the wall, thinking “crap my foot is outside the post and stuck behind the goal line”, but knowing it felt better then being jammed against the post with no ability to butterfly on it. Thanks for clarifying its purpose and the help in transitioning out of it.

    I tend to stay inside the post and sometimes it bites me, trickling in short side. I definitely need to start overlapping. Great video

    I wanna debate the details of RVH Toe on Post and Shin of Post!
    I maintain that ToP is overused, like RVH was a decade ago, and needs refinement.

    What do you do if the shooter goes 5-hole from about 10 feet above the goal line? Butterfly save?

    • @stefansanders3858
      @stefansanders3858 9 месяцев назад +1

      Sorry I know your asking him, but I’m a long time coach and keeper and will offer my advice, Yes that save selection is a butterfly, a full normal butterfly, square to shooter.
      Where it get tricky is deeper when you need to retreat to the post, but as he shower you can Bfly on the post when in Overlap…never ever ever Butterfly with skate jammed against the post, bc it will force a huge short side gap.
      Hope that helps.

    So why RVH if VH exists.(not a goalie, just see alot of pucks squeak through the RVH) Guess for speedy or acrobatic goalies its a better push off position than VH, but i just feel the standup look of the VH seals the post better and protects that over the shoulder snipe better.

    • @PeteNice29
      @PeteNice29 2 месяца назад +1

      Yeah, and a lot is predicated on you not always having to overcompensate for bad defensive play. I feel, myself included, that more needs to be discussed about not only not letting in "bad goals," but strategies on how to somewhat do that, while hedging against specials D.

    When I'm deep in the corner and even behind the red line and you're in your RVH, I'm using your head to bank the shot into the net. The RVH is used way to much and in minor hockey you have kids using it and are getting beat time and time again because they are to short to cover the top of the net, I watched a game where it was 4 -0 7 minutes into the game and every goal was score the same way when the keeper was in his RVH.

    Isnt the “overlap” the “panda”?

  • @aaronwheels1212
    @aaronwheels1212 5 месяцев назад

    If your positioning is correct, why would you "overlap" then to have to waste a movement bringing your skate inside the post? I would stand on the inside post and rotate if i had to, to challenge any pass from behind the net that would go through the crease, then had leverage to push off if the pass went high, or continued behind the net to the other side. Of course, i only played CHL against Mike Berge and coach Gary Unger, so i probably have no idea what i am talking about, just a beer leaguer😂

  • @salman13
    @salman13 Год назад +2

    Isn't this called the panda?

    • @sitrucj
      @sitrucj Год назад +1

      It seems like its half panda half butterfly.. maybe quarter panda?

    • @jasonhill6074
      @jasonhill6074 Год назад

      The panda is a flat useless overlap which forces shooters to bank pucks off your ass about 90 percent of time, and then the other 10 percent they wrap your ass hard cause your stuck on the far post panda-ing. 😂 He is using an overlap with slight angle to the corner, which allows him to play the short side shot or cross-crease play without extra movement.

    • @stefansanders3858
      @stefansanders3858 9 месяцев назад +1

      The Panda happens thusly in my understanding:
      As the player attacks (pushed wide by D of course), you follow with typical depth, angle and squareness, as the player gets below the FO Dot start to allow yourself to go “under-square” (far-side legs pad starts facing more towards the slot) (this works bc the profile of the open net is now tiny from the puck-perspective), as the player continues deeper the under-square deepens (more facing slot).
      Now if they take that low angle shot near the goal line, you shift shoulders square to shooter and half butterfly (much like dropping a knee when playing a slow dump in).
      This gives you great stick dexterity to angle puck behind net AND you are very ready for a low-to-high situation if you misread the shot, booted a rebound like a dingus, or it’s a broken play…
      Panda is actually really really good. But takes practice!
      Long Live Ling-Ling!

    • @stefansanders3858
      @stefansanders3858 9 месяцев назад +1

      Oh and Panda (the reason for the name) ends at RVH-like position against the net; near side pad in 1/2 Bfly, butt stacked over skate back resting comfortably on post shoulder pushed back into post/cross bar, head pushed into post/cross bar.
      So you sorta look like a lounging Panda.
      It creates a nice short side seal.

    RVH is such a horrible thing, especially in the NHL compared to a small overlap.
