My favorite moment was when someone was bartering with hbox. The guy was trying to get hbox to fight him. He said "I'm the best Ness in Ecuador." Hbox retorted, "I'm Hungrybox."
he said he was the best snake in ecuador, not to have hbox fight him, but to get an better offer because hungrybox wouldnt stand a chance if they were to fight
Rewatching because I love this video. I'm now becoming more convinced Sharp did a bait+switch negotiation, asking for something impossible only to offer the "better" deal which is more preferable to HBox.
Theory: Sharp's goal was Hot Juans from the start, he only used the trophy as a way to make Hbox concede easier Which, if true, makes the mind games that much more impressive
It's obvious. There's no way hbox parts with the stick for a random wifi tourney. It was just to anchor the "value" of the win as way higher than it should be.
It's called the "Door in Face" technique. I.E. It's like you're a door-to-door salesman and your offer would make them slam their door in your face. A clever ploy, since they're now thinking on a bigger scale. $100 bucks seems like a lot of money, but it's small compared to $1000. It can be pretty risky though. They might just walk away (or in terms of door-to-door, shoo you away).
That was a TOP LEVEL move by Sharp. He knew HBox would never give up the stick, he was just priming him. The 300 dollars? That just made him more comfortable, after all he had been paying money + influence all tournament. All that setup, catching him off guard by starting negotions first, Sharp may have come second but he truly won in my eyes. Even in conversation he is a top level competitor and earned his reward.
For my part, I entered this tournament and gentlemanned to Pokemon Showdown Random Battles. Sadly, my first opponent pulled out a Tapu Koko and swept me, twas a tragic twist of fate.
You claim that Hbox is a malcontent and Sharp is valiant, but this cannot be further from the truth. In a tournament advertised as a bloodbath, Hbox chose methods of peace; he only slew one contender, a contender who refused to accept an offer of wealth and survival, insisting on having the death match that he came for. Can the same be said for Sharp? How many good people died by his hand before the conclusion of the tournament?
Nay, twas the famished box who devoured the souls of his would-be opponents, and forced them to live on as their own lesser halves, trapped in life as if he had buried them alive. I would that they’d die a thousand deaths before allowing their warrior’s fiery spirit to be smothered but instead now their spirit and their honor lay forever in the belly of the box, torn from them irreparably. Sharp allowed his opponents both the swiftness and glory of a warrior’s death: the box and his trickery swayed them to a dark path where they would never know it.
"Lag switches are not just legal, but encouraged" - this needs to be a recurring thing. No more complaining about lag, everyone gets a lag switch and it's a fair and even playing field.
The rivals grand finals was also a hell of a thing to behold. The entire Rivals bracket was too honestly. It was a much smaller event but it was a ton of fun as well. My opponent and I round one played 100% accurate workshop characters and it's probably the best bracket experience I've ever had the privilege of having.
this was fantastic, I've never commented on your stuff before but this had me on the edge of my seat for SO long that I gave my own mom a convoluted explanation of what was going on because it had me GRIPPED from start to finish
Ran out of things to watch while building gunpla, so I've been looking for videos like this. Perfect timing! I also couldn't watch this tournament sadly, so a video like this is exactly what I needed. More than welcome for more videos like these whenever they come around!
I saw Hungrybox at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen green bandannas in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bandannas and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and rested me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bandanna and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by popping off really loudly.
No joke, this was the most captivating Smash content video since 2013. I mean I wasn't able to follow the tournament when it happened and only got some snippets here and there, so massive credit to the event and the people surrounding it. But the writing and editing in this video was incredible. For me, not knowing 99% of what happened before hand, this video was kinda too much (good) to even process in one sitting lol.
This is easily some of my favorite funny Smash content in a HOT second. We have plenty of great longform, serious documentary style stuff. But damn, you got the narrative and the tone so goddamn on point. Good job dude
I know you do a lot of highlights from steams and I do really enjoy those but this was fantastic. I think stepping more into this type of content suits you really quite well, you know how to sell a good story.
I genuinely mean this Coney, you have a great narrator voice and I would love if you did more scripted stuff like this, this video's is straight up one of your best
They have to do this again next year, this is easily one of the best tournaments of ANYTHING I've ever seen, I wouldn't miss it for the world if they ran another
Without exaggeration this was one of the most entertaining smash videos I've seen, the narration, the storyline and editing, everything was really well done and written Props to coney for the quality, I'm definitely subscribing 👍
19:35 my favorite part of this story was you mentioning HungryBox using his power… for good. The tournament in total was just pure gold and this video alone made me want to follow both of you.
This video style fucking RULES. I think it really suits itself to something like this where you’re explaining a topic and using stream highlights to supplement that explanation, and I think it can coexist with your other edited stream highlights very well! Incredible work to everyone involved!
this style of video needs to make a return on this channel, it was too good. I love the smash content as of late, but I'd also enjoy seeing this style with other types of games or topics. keep it up, man!
I’ve watched this video several times because not only is it very funny but damn coney your abilities to tell a story is impeccable. Your way of conveying the events has me absorbed every time i watch it
I love this grand finals especially because it was unique, stressful and had drama as well as a flashback from the Juan. In all the tournaments I have won in with Joker, the Aegis, Chrom and Falcon, never have I ever seen smash become so much more unique and interesting as bargaining over winning a game
Naito really gave the three way ultimatum of - Give me something you can never get back. - Make a promise you can't keep - Fight me and lose To a melee god. This man is an absolute legend.
Through all these different videos it’s so fun to see this chaos unfold My favourite moment out of all of them was when RUclipsr Captain kidd was demolished by a sweaty Marth who 1 stocks on Fd

Bruh, did you just call a trebuchet a “catapult.” Now, the catapult that you are thinking of is actually referred to as a mangonel, as technically, a trebuchet is actually a type of catapult. However, for the sake of simplicity, I shall refer to trebuchets as trebuchets and mangonels as catapults. Now, as you may know, an ordinary trebuchet can launch a 90kg projectile 300m via the usage of a counterweight, but a catapult’s method of propulsion is quite different. A catapult uses tension force to launch its projectiles, similar to the noble ballista, but as where the ballista uses tension along the middle of a rope or wire, a catapult uses this rope in a form of pulley system to launch its arm forwards to hurl a projectile. Now, why does this fail in comparison to the trebuchet? well, there are many reasons. the pulley system used by a catapult not only creates a larger amount of friction than the counterweight/pivot system of the trebuchet, the force generated is smaller, as the tension force of even a large catapult cannot match the gravitational force generated by the counterweight of a trebuchet. Alas, the catapult works against gravity moreso than the trebuchet, which is designed to intelligently use gravity in its favor. this is why even a small trebuchet that can be constructed in one’s backyard can launch projectiles far better than a standard issue catapult.
2 years later, I don't think sharp ever got his episode on Hot Juans :(
Wait really?
That 2v1 Share stock guy was a genius, lost my shit laughing at that

Sharp was such a master negotiator, throwing off Hbox like that was crazy. I'm shook, hope there's more of this!
hbox won the battle, but he lost the mental war
He threw HBox off his game took his strategy used it against him and controlled the conversation ha may have took 2nd but he was the real winner

Gotta love that "You're not negotiating properly" line from HBox at 17:24.
That's how you know Sharp's negotiating extremely well.
Hungrybox has demonstrated the sedative powers of his popoffs before... but to think they were this powerful...

I love how Sharp has a Cloud Pfp but he talks like he’s Sephiroth and makes deal like he’s Light Yagami
“He looked the devil in the eye, and dared him to blink.” That gave me chills
I honestly thought Coney's Gasp was over the top. Then I saw the golden fightstick and I gasped so hard I gasped in Spanish
