We get asked all the time how to move large boulders out the way when working creeks and streams for Placer Gold .....this is the easiest way we have found to do that and it is legal too. You can also use this system for small scale Lode mining when working hard rock Gold. Here is the link for the system sierrablaster.com/. They are waterproof so you can use water in the drill holes when blasting larger rocks. If you have a better way of Blasting rocks , we would love to hear it so leave us a comment below . I used the 8 gang blaster kit in Nevada and found that it requires a much larger gasoline generator to ensure a high enough electrical current to properly initiate all 8 blasting heads. If you don't calculate the required amperage/voltage then not all the blasters will ignite or they will ignite weak. Jeff, can you add this info and do the calculation on your next Sierra Blaster video to show how this is done so others don't get frustrated. Also please show that the dunnage blasting cap plastics are picked up afterwards, a face shield is used, and heavy leather gloves are worn when possible to reduce catastrophic bodily injury. Remember that any "accidents" that occur to single prospectors who are far far out in the desert, being blinded or stunned from a blast wave prevents self-extraction for medical care. Keep your radio away from the Blaster, electrically ground your generator to the earth, don't combine certain fabrics like nylon and wool which build up a strong electrical charge, etc. Written by a Sierra Blaster user, demolition expert, and gold prospector with much experience.
Please use a 90* angled fiberglass tamper rod that allows your hand to be placed off to the side of the drilled hole. If you accidently set off the charge you guys will want your hands out of line from the bore hole. The Sierra Blaster will rebound backwards and break your wrist or fingers. I know it isn't as easy to pack or fabricate a 90* angled wooden or fiberglass stick, but it will save your hand.
Jeff an easy way to drill in rock is to put a flat hard river rock in a bucket or large can. Fill with water about half the length of the drill. Set the bucket close to your drill hole. Dip the drill bit in the water and start drilling. When the flutes start to fill with rock dust paste and you feel or hear the motor start to load up pull out the drill bit. The flutes will be packed full of rock dust paste. Set the drill bit tip in the water bucket on top of the rock then trigger the drill. The rock paste will come off instantly. Be sure you are in hammer mode and the tip of the drill is in contact with the rock. Sounds complicated but it keeps your hole clean, your bit cool, drills much faster no blowing out dust and your bits last a lot longer. Try it you'll like it. Also works well for drilling 1" holes into dirt to make pilot holes for setting T posts.
I don't use the fluted bits that much. I use the hollow core drill bits that attach to a shop vac. Those don't need water or cooling since the drillings are sucked up into the shop vac. Only thing bad about those though is their not too good in that real soft schist. They tend to clog up. Then you need to unclog the vacuum holes in the bit with a stiff piece of wire Actually Jeff had a video out about those bits some time ago. Thier by DeWalt.
Those Sierra Blaster setups are the safest, legal way to blast. Love those things! Five minute epoxy is great for stemming a whole bunch of holes all in one shot.
Never get tired of watching your videos Jeff. Especially when Nevada Jack or Slim are in them. Thats one of the most handy setups for getting a large rock out of the way ive seen yet. Did you ever find anything in that adit? And Merry Christmas to you Lila and family. You all have a real good time Sonny Jim.
Thank you! that is an valuable tool for some trying to avoid injury moving something too heavy or working a picked over area where nobody could move the boulder.
With a lot of what I have learned from you Jeff, I had my best day prospecting today, I found a huge sulfide vain with sliver and gold untouched... I was going to buy some gunpowder and make some old fashioned dyamite but i just came across this video. I think this is a better root. I wish I had a way to send you some pictures of what I found today on Vancouver Island. I have never been so happy up in the mountains!!
Allways love your information and enthusiasm, Jeff. I can't see doing this myself, but who knows. Merry Christmas to you and your lovely wife, Slim, Nevada Jack and the rest of your helpers.
OoohhWeee...What a Blast!!! So where ya at Boi??? Let's Go...Tuck and run... I like that guy... I know well he don't like you boy... he saved your life... As I know they wanted two and only got 1... Your Pardner is a Great Guy... There Mr Williams...
Only takes one sierra blaster to blow them pants off… great info thanks for sharing see you on the next one👍🏼👊🏼p.s. merry Christmas Jeff Williams slim and all those characters on your channel (ya the red worms to…)
We broke lots of rock like that with the big extreme demolition hammer that you recommended. Sure blasting is more fun but isn't the hammer a faster and cheaper way of doing the same thing?
yes to some extent my brother ....if you have to work overhead it makes using a Demo hammer very difficult. These you can drill up and slowing blast out small sections at a time especially if you are mining a vein of quartz
I would recommend getting the bits that have 4 blades on the tip. The ones for cutting rebar. They are a few dollars more but they will last more than twice as long and they are much faster. I only use 1 half inch bit with no need to start with smaller ones
I was surprised on how affordable these are! I wonder if someone could use 410 shells and "reload" the cartridges and boosters. Also, what pistol were you packing at the 7:45 mark?
I can't remember what it is called but there is a putty type of stuff that you stuff the holes with and as it cures it expands . Not as exciting but not as dangerous and works in water
Well done old son...And no off comments from me today..hahahha....Just want to wish you and yours a Very Merry Christmas.......Be Safe old Son.....................JB.
Jeff I wouldn’t trust Slim with any blasting or dinamite equipment 😂. The Flintstone method ,,, hammer., chisels 😊 . Thank you and Lila for the BOOM advice and needed equipment. Also safety tips.
Morning Jeff. Great video. Question - Is there any requirements/licenses required to use this tool ? Thanks. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year... Let's goooooo!
Depends on your locality. Some places require permits to do any blasting. The company site says they can sell therm to anyone not prohibited, per ATF, but state and local ordinances and laws will apply.
no ...not really ...just take an online course through their website and you are in like Flynn..... very legal stuff as it is classified as a propellant
Do you need to be licensed or certified to use and buy the charges and equipment. Using dexspan that more time, and usually just drilling 12 inches 1 7/8 drill bit.
Jeff one thing I haven’t seen mentioned with the sierra blaster is if you van use it for a burn cut. Say you’ve found a vein you’d like to sample, could the sierra blaster be used?
That is great. Do you need a license to buy and use that. Do you think it would work on outcrops and exposed veins. Merry Christmas Jeff hope it's a good one.

That's some really nice limestone, are you allowed to sell it to companies that produce. Brick mortar and concrete mix?
I haven't seen anyone do it, but, would the blast pressure increase if you filled in the hole around the blaster rod?

You can fold the leads over to double up the wire.
Sierra Blasters and feather wedges. Nightmares large rocks have. Other smaller rocks have nightmares of Jaw Crushers and hammer mills.
