The Long Dark already is a horror game, you're stranded in a frozen hellscape, walking past dead bodies frozen in the snow, fighting off viscous animals and struggling not to starve or freeze to death.
And anyone whose stayed at the grage in coastal highway during a blizzard while playing this game at night in the dark knows true fear. Like the sounds that building makes even when its not storming is enough to have me looking over my shoulder irl to check nothings creeping up behind me. And THEN if you leave the garage, you have Yogi, BooBoo, and Pooh Bear and like ten thousand wolves waiting for you outside. (Or if youre REALLY unlucky a very territorial moose.)
The part where you walked past the train car with the corpse, just the fridge horror of knowing that poor man died alone, curled up in the dark... Like this game is SAD.
I think when they add cougars, *and if they give them a stalking mechanic* then yes, The Long Dark will be a lot more like a horror game.
I can already think of Zak making a compilation of TLD streamers getting scared of the monstruos Cougar sounds :))
I feel like the bear already has a stalking mechanic. I've had a bear, that I've never agro'ed, that made a beeline straight to my base. I wasn't kiting him either!
Tbh, cougars should not belong to the region, unlike let's say Canadian lynx and wolverines. They should be definitely added imo.
Haha, cougars are now being released soon, and I can definitely agree. Although I’d argue it’s a type of psychological horror already. The entire premise is based on being alone and having to survive. I mean, imagine how lonely Astrid/Will is! They’re stuck in endless winter for years, before they eventually go missing (save files deleted or corrupted) or die. No human contact.
Don't forget that's 212 calories PER SERVING in the broth. Broth's make 4 cups each, stackable to 8 cups, and are an ingredient in rabbit stew. At 4 servings * 212 calories, that 1 kilo 500 calorie Ptarmigan breast becomes 848 calories. The broth is heavy, but Rabbit stew, if you can get the other necessary ingredient is a good way to stretch a rabbit. Broth also stores really well (I don't know bout Interloper, but lower difficulties I've seen broth last a LONG time). Considering all it takes is salt, and water, I've been turning all my birdies into broth with the exception of staving off immediate starvation. The only thing I don't like about broth, is me trying to figure out where I picked up this huge mason jar and why hasn't it frozen?

During the 40th minute you say that it's nice that new zones are far away, it make the journey special.
Funny because I just read some people that are complaining about that, telling that it turn the game in a walking simulator.
As you, I like it. When I discovered it I was way under prepared to do that (without the backpack nor the moose satchel), thinking that I'll reach a zone with loot very soon.
Even now I choose what I bring, prepare myself to go there.
Walking through the train tunnel reminded me of the subways of Fallout 3. I was waiting for something to jump out and grab you.
It does remind me of it, yeah. Great game!
Ahahaha. My uncle got me that game for my 12th birthday. I was scared shitless of going in the DC metro tunnels because of the ghouls just LUNGING at you in pitch black. Took me several months just to get to DC. Favorite game of all time.
24:10 You can repair the insulation , it was at 100 condition , that's why it didn't show up , at first i also thought that it is unrepairable because of this :) , but it requires 2 cloth and 5 ptarmigan downs , if i remember correctly .
Also, it seems to be quite sturdy, not taking damage easily, even after being mauled by a bear. But of course it will also be worn right next to your skin, inside all 4 layers of shirts and jackets, so I'm sure that's the reasoning.
Just made it to day 53 on my interloper run, first time past 7 days!!! Thanks for all the help you've provided Zak. By the way in the Milton Basin right now, what a great place to set up for a beginner interloper player, bout to head down and make a few more arrows tho running low 😅
I love the Forsaken Airfield region. Many complain that it is too open and there's nothing there. But I enjoy the views and would make it my primary base were it not for one problem. The weather. I can get it being really cold and windy. But a blizzard every other day with fog in-between? It makes it feel as if the devs don't want us enjoying the map. I can see some people enjoying the challenge of surviving their late run but it's not an incredibly rewarding challenge. HRV at least has beautiful vistas so offset the challenge of the terrain and remote location
every other? my first trip there (3rd run ever, learning the game on loper) I had a blizzard all day, every day. tried sleeping every 1-2 hours. ended up losing my well fed, i ejected earlier then i wanted to and almost died to freezing just rushing to GTFO of that nightmare. I couldn't hunt, couldn't find my way around - i tried looking up maps just to get an idea through the 1,00 year blizzard in vain, ended up wasted a stim due to impatience :( trying again with courage and knowledge borrowed from zak. [I hope] maybe this time i'll just forget well fed and pick it up later. go the starvation route.
@@macgw86 yeah, it's insane. I will clarify that I was also playing on Interloper. That will affect the weather intensity so ones playing on different difficulties more might have a different experience
Zak, I have to say thank you for all the videos you make! I remember how much the TWM Interloper Walkthrough helped me and how it changed the way I look at the game. Now I am easily doing 100+ days runs and I am exploring the world with no fear.

Bout that firestriker in Broken Railroad: I just recently found it in the wheelbarrow in that small shed right next to the hunting lodge. As far as I remember the spawn points, this is the only one you haven‘t checked :)
I'm nearly positive that when he was there, there was no wheelbarrow in the shed.

I actually started playing interloper for the first time after starting this series and basically followed in your footsteps up to episode 23, and then I 'went ahead' of you to the far territories myself. Looking forward to seeing how you handle the airfield, and seeing if that second bear coat makes a huge difference, as I took this journey with just one. Cheers!

14:44 if you look at the rock you're standing on, there is a spine edge to the right.. you need to crouch in order to be able to climb this spine of the rock as it is very close to the wall but there is an overhang you can crouch and get onto the spine, then its a wiggle work to get up it, then at the top, you follow the edge of the rock to the left doing another wiggle to get on top... bobs you;re uncle... cheers

I think there were a couple glove boxes in the trucks you missed zak. I know you were looking for the fire striker. I actually think it is the one on the bridge. Id have to go back and watch the episode where you came in to broken railroad again.

When cooking it is good to try looking down the list, with the food ingredients in your inventory and not on the ground as is your common response to meat even in a safe area.
Broth should give more calories than just cooking the ptarmigan meat. Cooking it gives 500 calories, however each broth give around 200 calories and when you make a portion you get 4 of them, which equals 800 calories combined. So you are basically sacrificing water and salt (which is more or less useless in any other way except for other recipes I guess) to get 300 more calories out of the meat.
Trying to get a shortcut at 16:00 is the best way to end up stuck between 2 rocks at the moment.
Made me nervous with your extreme goating there 😂 I ended a couple of runs recently (including my longest ever) by falling off things! My longest run I ended up descending something I couldn't get back up inadvertently and then had to try and goat down a big cliff, got about as far as the top of the trees and then died! Cant remember what region it was
Curious fact: if you map your surroundings in that small plateau at 1:20:17 you will see a Rope climbing icon in the map. May be a bug or maybe a indication for something to come? :)

fyi, a wolf can spawn in the hub, generally near the coal chute area or near forsaken airfield exit, at least it can on custom difficulty.

Yea, broth is only useful if you have flour and can make venison stew or something, other than the Warming potential like you mentioned.
I get the point that airfields are usually far away from the city/towns but this region seems way to time consuming to reach.
I hope the rest of the new regions connect on better and give more lore to the far territory
Consider geography too though. You need a LOT of flat space for taking off & landing, especially in a remote & dangerous setting with lots of inclement weather. Not something easily found in mountainous regions. Which is also why they built a railroad to connect the airfield to the other parts of the island.

Hi Zak, great videos man. Have you or anybody here had any major stuff disappearing from their games lately? Today in my main interloper run (226 days) I had a lot of stuff just gone. I was playing that game and switched to play The Hunted Part 2 (following your tutorial video of course) and when I got back to my survival game, my hacksaw, hammer, mag lens, bed roll and 1 firestriker out of two, were gone from my players inventory. I was in the community center when this happened, traveling from TWM to mistery lake. When I got to camp office where I am positive I had another bedroll and another hacksaw, they were gone as well.
Im sure I had this stuff in my base because I always take a screenshot of what I leave in my main bases before moving to a different region. I am positive I have one last mag lens in TWM because I was just traveling from there to ML when this happened, so if I go there and my mag lens is gone, that means all of them have disappeared form the whole game as well as the hacksaws, hammers and bedrolls. But now Im afraid to travel there to check because I dont have a bedroll and that could mean the end of my run.
This is a bug going around though I thought it was fixed now. You can email Hinterland support and they may fix it
Oh man thats a bummer. I stopped playing this game 12 years ago because my 700 days interloper file was rendered obsolete in one of the updates. Now 12 years later I gave it another chance thinking that the game was in a much much better state and this happens. Two months playing nothing but this game, to just one day have your stuff gone for no reason other than yet another bug. Sad, sad day for this gamer. @@Zaknafein

Passed 200 days on my main run, i wish there was something that wouldnt make it a chore at this stage, most of what i do is "pass time". But i suppose its hard to put anything of substance that far into the game. I know we aint suppose to last more than 100days i think? but still :)
There is an achievement for surviving 500 days
Doesnt change the fact, that its "boring" and most of what you'd be doing is pass time.@@MacDelta
@jensjensen7504 oh I know. Stopped somewhere around day 370, and this was before the radio update. Haven't been able to get the motivation to rejoin that save, especially after I scrapped 99% of the batteries for bullets on my Stalker run.
Ah ya that sucks, i only play on interloper, so the batteries are of little use. I did start a new run just to be "safe" but as i said, over 200days now, and its beginning to feel boring. @@MacDelta

Hi Zac or everyone with a tips! i have quick guestion on you guys. I am in the Airfiled and i waited for the aurora of fog to kick in to find the omega bunker and i just cant pick up the singal for that, i walked almost the whole region with the shortwave on and couldnt catch any singal. I watched some videos online from desparation and didnt even find the usual snow bump in place that others found the bunker. Any idead why thats happening(or more like not happening) ? im scared that i will have to start new save but im on almost 200days of my own days to 500, so i would be kinda sad if i had to leave this save :/ any help would be amazing! Love that video btw, even though i almsot had heart attack when you jumped to the ledge, deffinetly expected death wall there :D (sorry for my english, im from czech republic and i have severe dyslexia)
I’d submit a ticket on the hinterland forum. The devs are on there and usually reply pretty quick. That’s awesome though the road to 500
@@rustyaxe155 i googled it again and found out that its probably because you can not do the Omega as first bunker. You have to do omega last or whatever. Do im went back and doing Pleasant Valley bunker first. But thank you for answer.
Does anyone have a good base recommendation besides the camp office and trappers because my bear spawns aren't at either.
The farm in pleasant valley, but if you have the bear at unnamed pond you can get a torch going make yourself smell and lure the bear over. Once it is close enough start a fire with your torch shoot it once, it will charge but stop by the fire. One more headshot and you got yourself a bear by trappers without the spawn
Trailers are okay on mystery lake but I rarely use them. The farms on pleasant valley and mountain town are excellent. Most anything by the lake in coastal is fun, especially if you avoid using the garage. All comes down to what you want to challenge yourself with.
Personally I've been at the mountaineers hut on timberwolf for almost 50 days on stalker, approaching day 100 and started in mountain town. Gonna go for the Tales next 🍀

Hello, can i find Mountaineering Boots in survival mod? (difficulty voyageur)
I searched in several regions and found most of the boots, but I didn't see them.
What are mountaineering boots? Might be a mistranslation as no boots have that name
They are the ones that Gray Mother offers you in story mode for completing the side quest "One Last Thing".
Their appearance is similar to Trail Boots, but with yellow laces in place of red ones.
