Hey Bash. This is a phenomenal guide. I always wanted to make a thorough one, but never got around to it, but this is way better! Great job! One question: you mention the bonus scare chance for wolf/bear coat. But what is the base chance? Sometimes wolves flee anyway. Like 5% I am guessing?
Thanks Zak, the base chance is difficult to measure. I couldn't datamine it and wolves spawned by console never seem to flee without coats.. So I chased "real" wolves around FA a couple hundred times, I do believe the base chance is about 5% and does stack on top of the coat bonus, but it could be anywhere between 1-10%. Hard to know for sure with RNG mechanics.
I've had near 100% success when I hit a charging wolf with a stone. But there were times, before I knew about the weakness mechanic when wolves continued charging even though i clearly hit it with a stone. I'm not sure if I was weak at those times or not, but I figured it was worth mentioning.
It's a great and cheap way to deal with wolves, but as mentioned, it's not 100% guaranteed, unless you play on custom with wolf fear set to high. I like to carry a couple stones on me at all times.
@@Bashrobe Yeah anything I play on is medium fear. I've been messing around with the dev console mod and it could be just the way the RNG lined up, but I seemed to fail to scare it after provoking a charge more as my clothing got more destroyed. I'd godmode and ungodmode after each fight, but wouldn't replace clothes. It's probably nothing though.
something to add that I just discovered in the new Zone: Glimmer Fog will charge Flashlights but it won't turn Wolves into Aurora Wolves, so you won't be able to scare them off with a Flashlight. . . . [spoiler]: remember this when you're trying to investigate the two Buried Echoes Tale caches, both are likely to require traversing Wolf areas during either a Glimmer Fog or Aurora
Very good information , I have being playing for about a year and didn’t know many of those very useful tricks I’m sure many veterans players didn’t know either I was hoping one day Hinterland will ad to the game a shut gun to get them back for all the pain I have I have received from these dogs
That's so weird, because I recently had an issue where my flashlight wasn't scaring aurora wolves. I'd flash the high beam and they'd stop and growl, but they wouldn't run away. This was with the miner's flashlight though, maybe it's a bug with it. I had no negative afflictions, I was heading to one of the Signal Void bunkers so I was well rested beforehand and had plenty of inventory space.
yesterday i was hunted by two wolfs, i got to safety on a fallen tree sitting and observed their behavior. im currently at blackrock and i have a wolfsskincoat as inner layer; it feels like 50% or higher for me.
Never seen any wolf get close to me enough for it to attack me ever when im walking away from it, almost 450 hours on the game and ive always just matched their walking at me and just continued to just walk and get away in a building. This is either a new mechanic that only exists in new runs cuz i for sure never had that happen to me. Or actually a TFTFT thing cause i didn't like it so i didn't go with the dlc as of yet completely.
This is an abaolutely fantastic guide, hopefully my cache searching during auroras will go much smoother now. One question; does being up/downwind affect your smell radius to predators? It seems that way at least to me but I'm judging this by my voyager save so the radius may be smaller than what I think it should be.
I'd be interested to see, because it doesn't work for me, at least not the same as cliffs. But it does block their path, so if you drop multiple travois (or drop the travois in a relatively narrow path, or maybe a cave entrance), you could block out a charging wolf (or anything, really).
Yes, I had to split out the killing part, otherwise the video would be really long. But it's almost done so it should come out soon. I plan to cover timberwolves and the new poison wolves next, then we'll see.
in all seriousness, though, 2:20 this explains so many of my deaths: next to a fire, holding a torch, the wolves were really like, "mmm, you're done". Thank you, His Majesty! 💖
Looks like hypothermia risk is also treated as weakness when you walk towards a wolf with a lit torch in hand.. i almost lost multiple runs because of this bullshit mechanic and i'm never gonna rely on torches against those fuckers ever again..

Is this the og rizznafein?
This is amazing and very comprehensive, but I want to add that on, at least Voyageur, there is a chance to find Noisemakers in Forsaken Airfield
Thanks, I had no idea FA had noisemakers.
This is great! Very comprehensive. I dread to think how many wolf struggles you went through for it, though...🥶
Amazing guide. Really the most comprehensive guide on wolf behavior ever posted.
2:40 ''I don't feel so good''
You can also turn a wolf's pelt into clothing as warning. Make an example of the ones that bled out after you fought off their maul.
I had no idea you could just walk toward wolves with a torch after 378h of playing :D I just assume it was the wolf coat when it happened.

Yes, indeed glimmer fog does not turn animals into their aurora variants, and since flashlights do not scare regular wolves it will not work
I have 1000 hours and learned sooo much!! Having something between you is a game changer. Thank you for being so in depth!
This was absolutely fascinating. Thank you so much for putting this together. Hope you're going to do one on Timberwolves!
Yes, I plan to release it before christmas
This is probably by far the best video about wolf game mechanics. Great work bash
Great video so helpful
You deserve so much more likes and suscriptors!
Really good research, thank you very much!
GREAT information!
Thank you bash. This is extremely useful. Maybe now I wont die as much from wolves
Great examples here. Doing all the testing too. Absolute legend!
Maaan this is an amazing in depth work .. can't believe how much I learnt
Hi Bash, only you to know that is a pleasure watch your videos. Can feel all the work and time you spend on them. 😘

I’m sure many veterans players didn’t know either

This is a incredible video. I will wait for your input about the decoys. Thumbs up.

Very thorough, Bashrobe. Thanks!
Nice video👍🏾
Yesss Bashy!! Great video, and I know you put hard work into it! Keep it up! 🎉👏🧈

very detailed instruction
This is a godlike video, thank you.
Great video Bash! Thanks!

11:51 It's probably because the game counts it as "aiming" at the wolf.
Also, I wonder if 16:10 works with burn out fires?
It didn't seem to work with burnt out fires for some reason when I tried.
This is an abaolutely fantastic guide, hopefully my cache searching during auroras will go much smoother now.

Yes it does
there is also the travois. if you climb on it, wolf will ignore you as if on clifs. I have a video proof if intersted

This is so useful, thank you!!
Now we just need bears, and cougars (when they come out).
This is super in depth love it. Looking forward to follow up of how to kill them efficiently. Can I assume this is a series of videos.
Yes, I had to split out the killing part, otherwise the video would be really long. But it's almost done so it should come out soon. I plan to cover timberwolves and the new poison wolves next, then we'll see.
Have you tested, do wolves consider you "weak" if you have scurvy?
i never played this game but it seems like a really complicated ai
Oh! Good one!

Wolves on interloper are way too hardcore to be honest, even if I fight back with a prybar thwt still kill me
Thanks
Very good Video 🎉
Thanks for this, So very helpful. And Thanks to Zaknafein for turning me on to your channel. Onward! To the subscribe button!

what about throw meat bait to them
My next video will cover decoys and scent mechanics
@@Bashrobe
@@damlaerbahan Yeah there's a trick to it to make it consistent, video should be up next weekend 🙂
