    Robert, you are a GOD SEND! You have been such a big help with my sister in laws old Volvo 850 GLT Wagon. When i run into a problem, you inevitably have covered the problem and covered it well. THANK YOU for doing these videos! You have saved me many hours of frustration, and many hundreds of dollars on labor.

Having to learn quick lol. Spending my time between Matthew's site & swedespeed, found your channel. Thanks again!

    Great information but I already dropped tank. Best way to avoid dropping tank . Hose was installed upside down and not able to remove without dropping tank. Hoping hose could be replaced with a cheaper one but it could not. Need to buy hose with different sizes on both ends was $18. Ya wow! Thanks Robert!

    Did this today. Took me four hours. As Robert says, lowering the tank would have made it easier but I just filled it recently and didn't want to lower it. The clamp on the right side of the hose was rusted and there was no way to turn the screw. I couldn't get a good angle with a saw so I eventually drilled a few holes in it and ripped it off. The factory clamps are heavy duty, not like the thin stuff you buy at the store.
    I drilled both holes in the floorboard to access the clamps. Once I got the hose off, I noticed it was great condition (sigh). WTH? It was only THEN that I notice gas around the fuel pump. TURNS OUT, the retainer ring was loose on the fuel pump so it was not seated property, which caused a major leak when I filled the tank and gas to come up and around when I shook the car. It's an aftermarket pump that I replaced after my factory pump made a weird noise. Another "repair" probably unnecessary.
    Anyway, getting the NEW hose on was a major PITA. I had to literally trim rubber away from the ends to created a bezzeled hole. Once the right (smaller) end was connected, fitting the larger side was difficult. The sender wires and another hose are in the way so you basically have to contort the whole thing while trying to get the hose over the nipple. Not easy. Eventually, I got it on and then wrestled with the clamps to get them just right.
    btw, my car has just over 100k.
    My advice...first check your fuel pump retainer ring (black). If it's definitely the hose, drop the tank. My strap bolts were rusted (original) so I didn't want to risk it with a full tank.

    Also if one does decide to drop the fuel tank down, be very careful as the vacuum line coming from the fuel tank going to the rollover valve is easily broken.

    I filled my car today and it appears I have this very problem. Does the leaking stop once the gas level drops a bit?
    Also, I noticed my filler neck retainer is rotting. Is there one or two of these retainers on the pipe? FCP sells them as singles, not pairs so that's why I ask.

    Hello Robert, I have a fuel leak on my 95 850 wagon, and it’s dripping right next to the front passenger tire while it’s running now, it has a hard start now and very rough idle and will leak a steady dripping stream from that area, before that I’d notice that the purge valve hadn’t had its vacuum tube connected and we’ve been smelling a gas smell in the cab maybe a week or so prior before I noticed the purge valve being disconnected, it has a check engine light now but I haven’t had to chance to a scan it yet or get to look under the car, I was wondering if you have any ideas where a leak could be coming from underneath the car? Like possibly any fuel lines under there can maybe be replaced? When it was on and leaking I saw no fuel leaking from the injectors or pressure regulator, thank you for any help

  • @PaulB__
    @PaulB__ 7 лет назад

    Hi Robert!
    I have a '96 850TDI wagon. My problem is that after a journey I notice that the fuel tank is under pressure so when I unscrew the cap the pressure releases (I can hear it). Is that normal? Is the fuel cap ventilated ot sealed on these cars?

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  7 лет назад

      +LPFan3118 Is it pressure or vacuum? Have you checked the owners manual?

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  7 лет назад

      +LPFan3118 why would that be a problem?

    • @PaulB__
      @PaulB__ 7 лет назад

      It is vacuum. I've checked it but says nothing about it.

    • @PaulB__
      @PaulB__ 7 лет назад

      I do know if it is a problem , just a bit strange because I have not experienced with other cars. Some say on forums that this is normal and does not let the gas vapors out of the tank.

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  7 лет назад +1

      LPFan3118 gas vapors are not supposed to escape the system. If they did, they would damage the ozone.
      It is probably vacuum, totally normal.
      You have an old vehicle, things will probably go wrong all the time and you will discover things. If it doesn't effect your safety, consume excessive fuel or fluids, cause the vehicle not to run properly, don't let it bother you.

    looks like a pure pain to do !
    no room for nothing on the top part of the tank...
    Id still drop the tank as its super ez to do and you don't need to remove the upper fuel lines to drop the tank. Just get a jack stand ready any total time maybe an hour if you never done it before...the 1 time you do it..you'll be like 5 bolts and 20 min job to drop(hang /swing in its location not really removing it from the car but you could if need be.. ) after that...
    its really is just the strap bolts(can be a pain if rusted but PB blaster and an over night soak and your ready to go) and the under gas door bolts (3 maybe? ) the whole filler tube and tank will hang in 1 piece with the lines holding and tilting the top down so the jack stand will let you work on the top part of the tank with out too much stress on the lines..
    ive heard of Roberts method but its a lot of cutting and sparks if your fuel pump gasket is bad and venting fumes get ready to call 911 ....
    really anyone can drop a Volvo850/s70 tank if you can change the spark plugs...that's really how ez it is.

    I think you could have done it better by putting a hose at the end of the fuel rail near the intake and powering the fuel pump it would empty the fuel tank... This way you could lower the tank easily..

    Definitely not the best method to do that, I did that job myself recently. I found someone on MVS as well who had the job and followed their instructions with a few changes.
    (just for reference I had near a full tank of gas as well)
    -Pull back all the paneling/ carpet to gain access to the fuel tank.
    - Remove electrical connectors on top of fuel tank to the fuel pump
    - Pull the seal around the filler cap ( just pulls out by hand)
    - Get a floor jack (or two) with some large square pieces of wood on top of them and extend them to the height of the fuel tank. If using two, put one on each side.
    - Remove the bolts for the straps that hold the fuel tank to the body
    - Lower the floor jack/ jacks down slowly and guide the electrical connectors through the hole. Only lower the tank a few inches down just so you can access the top clamp and get your hand in there.
    - Replace the hose and reverse order to put the car back together!
    Gets the job done without the need to drill any holes. :)
